HDD Setup (not Raid Related)

Apr 23, 2008

I have a question regarding, hard drives and performance etc... I only use it for forums and currently is only one site (hopefully couple more in no time)

Currently I have 2x36gb SAS in raid 1 obviously containing everything including dbs and /home. and a third 250gb drive for backups only ^^ Ronny did an excelent job setting this up.

Any ways, my problem is that I wan't to allow some attachments on my forums, and this would take a significant ammount of space over 1gb no problem and then keep increasing (that's gonna sux for bandwidth). I know it will fit in the SAS drives no problems, dbs are rather small at the time (2.5gb in total) but logs are quite big 5-10gbs in total.

I thought it might be a good idea to purchase another drive. This 4th drive would be 750 and backups would move there , and use the 250 for the /home directory. This would give a lot of room for uploads, and backups accordingly and keep the fast ones for OS and dbs

I was told, however, and understandebly, that a lot of performance would be lost by moving /home to a SATA drive I know SATAS are no way as fast, but then vbulletin can't upload attach files to a folder outside its hirachy (without complicated modifications).
(Note: i didn't specify my resons for wanting such set up)

So I'm in a bit of a pickle. Having the bigger drive would allow me to have the attachments, and should eventually result on more traffic etc to my site. /home currently is only 150mbs big... but then performance is also an issue pitty i couldn't afford the bigger drices at the time [sees the point of renting over buydowns now]

is there a way that /var/log/httpd saves those massive logs on another drive? it would free up 5-10gbs

in shortIs moving /home to a SATA drive from Raid 1 SAS a bad idea? (considering space and purpose)

Could httpd logs or /var/log in general be moved to the backup/another drive?

Setup Review Of LimeStone Networks

May 29, 2009

After hitting my head with few of the dedi providers, i came across Lime Stone Networks. I went to their site, selected the server I wanted with addons etc. I initiated live chat for sales query and instantly all was finalized.

I paid the amount and after 4-5 hours the server was ready and details were in my email. This is the most speedy server setup i had seen. Their RockWare control panel is very flexible and easy to use. Most of the things which have/are not provided by other dedi providers are in their control panel for easy access.

Basic stuff like remote reboots, dns management etc. is free and already included with your server. Their support is also very good, I opened a few tickets with them all were answered within 1-2 mins. Its been more than 10 days with them now and my all data is moved to the new server and everything is running fine and stable.

The only thing is that their sales rep was unable to given a discount of 0.99 cents! My order totalled to $200.99 and I asked sales rep to reduce the 0.99 to make it rounded but he did'nt. I know they won't built a palace and neither will I but what the heck if he could ?! Just would have pleased me.

Anyways overall the experience is great and support is good. There were also some abuses on the server by some of my clients and they were able to find them asap and informed me and gave ample time to resolve the issues.

I suggest that if you're also looking for a dedi then be sure to visit their site. I will post more review on this after few months.

Aplus.net Initial Setup Review

Aug 13, 2008

Bought a new server from Aplus.net last night.

Got a great deal on a simple server for a side project. Paying $59.99 a month for the server which makes it very affordable for medium-size projects.
General:

* Setup Fee: Free
* Celeron 1.7 GHz CPU
* 512 MB RAM (upgradeable to 2GB)
* 60 GB IDE Hard Drive
* 500 GB Monthly Transfer
* 5 IP addresses*
* Premium Set-Up Options

The sign-up was quick and easy and I was sent an authorization email. I authorized and was able to immediately log into my account.

I processed the order a bit late at night so the next morning I received a call on my cell from my personal tech rep saying the server was already up and running (they said it would take three day, more like 8 hours)

He offered any assistance to help me get up and running and gave me a direct line to his phone in case of anything. Then he emailed his contact info and an introduction to my e-mail as I requested.

So far I am very pleased with the setup and the individualized attention, although I may not require it, it is very comforting to know it is there.

First impressions mean a lot to me and Aplus.net's first impression is stellar to say the least.

Hope this helps, I will be posting a review a bit down the line on how it progresses.

Downtown Host Setup And Support Review

May 29, 2008

I have recently left dreamhost in search of a more reliable and speedy host. The only thing I will be missing from dreamhost is their customer support which is very good. In fact I didn't think it could be topped by anyone...but I was proven wrong (at least so far).

So what host did I choose? Downtown host obviously (based on title : P). This is not a FULL host review, just initial setup and support which normally would be a huge ordeal for me without help.

Anyway, I bought my hosting a few days ago and requested a site transfer in their support ticket system. I was greeted within 10 minutes by the support team walking me through the steps I needed to take in order to get it going. Once I gave them the proper information, the transfer was done in under an hour for four-five sites. I then tried setting up the sites by connecting them to the new databases that they transferred my data into. Didn't work like I thought it would so I continued to mess around with it until I basically screwed up my initial database...oops. Another ticket to support and within 10 min I get a reply that they will transfer the sites and repopulate the database again for me. Very nicely I might add. No sarcastic emails because the dumb noob messed up his database or anything : ]

The new transfer was complete and I set up everything without a hitch (since I figured out what I did wrong).

All this was done through a series of around 20-30 support emails. Every one was answered often within minutes. None over 10 minutes. All were pleasant answers and none were snotty in the least. Thank you Jorge, Sabastian and Diego for helping me with the problems. Their support indeed beat the crap out of dreamhost's. I've rarely gotten a response that quickly.

My package is nothing to scoff at either. 5GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth for around 65+ a year. That's right a year. The sites have run perfectly so far and the speeds have been VERY fast compared to dreamhost's.

I'd say I am incredibly happy with my initial setup with downtownhost. I will post a follow up review in a few months addressing my experiences with reliability and such. I expect it to be another good review, as I haven't been able to find a negative one for downtownhost on WHT.

Peer1 Miami Sales And Setup Review

Apr 13, 2008

I just moved 3 servers to colo with Peer1 in Miami. I just had 3 great years of colo with Fluidhosting so my standards are high. I wanted to buy directly from a Tier2, however, and Miami is close enough that I can access the datacenter if I need to which will be a plus.

My sales rep, Delynn, was great. Many of you are hosts and know that buying directly from Tier1's and Tier2's can be a pain in the butt because of the typical big company sales approach. You know when they refuse to give you a price and instead insist on knowing what your "budget" is... Delynn didn't do that, Peer1 has some great deals for smaller setups like 1/8th cabinets w/ 5mbps. They also gave me a month to month contract for a modest increase over the full year contract amount.

As for setup: The servers were installed within 2 hours of arriving on a Saturday. The tech gave me a call and confirmed everything was ok and that my 3 servers + unmanaged switch were doing ok on the 5 amp circuit since my servers are pretty low power usage. Their NOC is very smart and fast and available 24/7 afaik.

Important things to note: Luckily the day before my servers arrived I had an "oh @#%@" moment when I realized that I'd probably need to send them my own switch/power strip/ethernet cables. Sure enough this was the case and I overnighted a box to arrive at the same time as my servers. IMO this is a rather small caveat. It's not a big deal to send them a 50-100 dollar 100mbps unmanaged switch that's only using 0.2 amps.

So it's been "so far so good" I've been a fan of the Peer1 network since years ago when Fluidhosting used to carry them. As one would expect the Peer1 Miami pings to Europe/Asia aren't as good as the Internap routes from the northeast but I'm expecting the nearly flawless Peer1 network connectivity that I remember. I will give a network update in a few months.

IP Addresses Related

Sep 25, 2008

1- What means that the site has an IP?, what will differ if the site has an IP?

2- What is the importance of IPs for every site?, I mean now I'm running a shared hosting, Should each site has it's dedicated IP? and is it dangerous to make all clients has same IP?

3- I got 5 IPs with my server, how can I assign a DEDICATED IP for my main site, and then assign the 2nd 2 IPs for my main site Name servers & Finally assign the rest IPs for Resellers?

4- In the domaintools whois Service, Under Server Data category, sometimes I found :
Dedicated Hosting: domain.com is hosted on a dedicated server.

what this means, and how can I make my domain looks like this , cause it's already hosted on a dedicated server.

5- When I asked my Server Co. about extra IPs, they told me:

" for smaller allocations its $1 per ip, we also require full ARIN IP justification." so, what's ARIN IP justification?

Streaming Audio Related

Jun 8, 2009

I'm interested in making a site which would stream video game (RPG) audio to users through flash. I have long searched for a service that I could use to listen to that odd track from final fantasy 8 for example (and not some cheap midi) without going through hundreds of links etc. So I'm thinking of making one myself.

I know there are sites that host mass video game mp3s (gh.ffshrine.org) and also remix and host video game music (ocremix.org) but I don't know if what they are doing is OK by normal hosting standards.

if it is, <snipped>.

Now the directory has around 100,000 files that hardly change. Only thing that happens in that directory is either the old files are deleted or new files are added. All of them image

Due to some reason when i rsync using any of the two commands below, it transfer each and every file again rather then transferring the new or updated files.

Here is what i am currently using

rsync -avH /old/path /destination/path (this is for internal backup drive)

or

rsync -avz -e ssh /old/path username@username.remoteaddress:/destination/path

why all my files in the directory all uploaded again

Session Errors - Php.ini Related

Aug 19, 2007

I have a Cpanel box, in WHM I used the "PHP Configuration Editor" and changed the php execution time (minor change). After clicking save I now get the following error on any php using sessions:

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: open(/tmp /sess_1d374c43a0f726cd43776f9f92485bec, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in /home/continou/public_html/control/index.php on line 4

One thing I noticed it did was turn on PHPSuexec which generally causes problems for me. I turned that off and the error response changed slightly (to above) but the problem is not solved.

I tried rebooting the server. /tmp does exist, I am now rebuilding apache in hopes that corrects the problem.

Iptables And Related/established Connections

Apr 11, 2009

I've got a vps running centos 5.3 on an openvz platform. I've been using a simple set of iptables rules but recently the host moved me to a new server and I'm having issues with my firewall. I'm pretty sure it's the firewall since if I stop iptables or flush the rules everything works properly.

my rules:

Code:
!/usr/bin/env iptables-restore
*filter
:FORWARD DROP [0:0]
:INPUT DROP [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
-A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT
The last rule continues with all the other used protocols (pop3/dns/http/etc)

The problem is incoming connections with should be allowed from by the related,established rule aren't permitted. If I use wget,ftp,ping, or dig from my shell they all report a time out. For example dig w3.org gives no server reachable. If I capture all dns requestes with tcpdump I see the outgoing request to dns and I see the incoming data but dig still reports a timeout. Since tcpdump sits before iptables and I have no output filtering it seems that my input filter isn't seeing the related/established state of dig and allowing the results in.

But, what's the solution? Do I need to ask the vps provider for something specific? If so what?

Or is there a better way to write my iptables rules to compensate for this problem?

Mod_auth_mysql And Htaccess Combination Related

Jan 13, 2007

I'm using .htaccess file and mod_auth_mysql for protection of a site, where the old users are in flat passwd file and the new ones are in DB, so i need both the standart .htpasswd check and if the user is not there check in the mysql DB

well here is how currently my htaccess file looks:
------------------------
AuthName "Password Protected Pages"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /home/edited/.htpasswd

<limit GET POST PUT>
require valid-user
</limit>

AuthMySQLAuthoritative Off
AuthName "Members Only"
AuthType Basic
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthMySQLHost domain-removed.com
AuthMySQLDB username-removed
AuthMySQLUser user-removed
AuthMySQLPassword edited
AuthMySQLUserTable members
AuthMySQLNameField username
AuthMySQLPasswordField password
AuthMySQLPwEncryption none
AuthMySQLUserCondition "status=1 AND siteid=2"
require valid-user

----------------
but the site doesn't accept neither the flat passwd file users, neither the ones from the nats DB, it just pop-ups the password dialog box again, whicih means that the password is not accepted

For the users i tested with i double checked that they DO exist in the htpasswd file or in the DB, so its not that

also, cause the site and the DB are on different servers, i have authorised the first one to query the mysql db at the second, so its not from that as well

i have removed the sensitive information (domains, users and passwords from the sample code i pasted here)

so...i'm totally lost here and any directions or ideas will be highly apprecicated

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Web Page Displaying Related Links

Oct 1, 2014

I was asked by a user why he only saw a page with 'related links' when he went to the web site. I checked and saw the same thing if I typed www.domain.tld. If I just typed domain.tld, the page displayed fine. In trying different things tonite, I cleared my cache and now neither url works.

I am using Parallels Plesk Panel 11.5.3. If I click the 'Preview' button on the panel, everything looks great. If I click the 'Open' button, I get the 'related links' page.Today, the shcnf.com link seems to be working fine and the 'Open' button in Parallels Plesk Panel works, but the www.shcnf.com link is still showing a 'related links' page.

My DNS settings show:

shcnf.com record type: A value: 198.144.188.31
www.shcnf.com record type: CNAME value: shcnf.com

I do not currently have a preferred domain set in my hosting settings. I tried setting one the other night with no luck, though I was also playing with the DNS settings (I tried setting www.shcnf.com to an A value with the IP, hoping to force it to work).

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Remove Domain Alias Warns It Will Delete All Related Files

In Plesk 11.5.30 Update #13, in a Webspace, on the Websites & Domains tab, if I click an alias, a window appears for the alias with the option to "Remove Domain Alias". If I move the cursor over the text "Remove Domain Alias", or click on the link, I see a pop-up: Removing this website will also delete all related files, directories, and web applications from the server.

I think this is incorrect because removing an alias should not remove any files, directories, and web applications.

My question goes thus:

What type of server efficiently holds such quantity of websites or could he be in for one hell of a ride?

How To Tell How Many Sites On One Server

Apr 14, 2008

Is there a way to tell how many, and the domain names, of all the sites assigned to one server or IP address on a shared hosting server? When I do a lookup on my server's IP address, it only points back to my hosting company. If I ping my domain, I get my IP address, so it seems reasonable that there's probably a way to find this out. I thought I had seen a post here about this, but searched for quite awhile, and couldn't find it.

I noticed my server's CPanel CPU Service Status went from about .4 (green) to 1.6 (red), and has pretty much stayed there the last few hours. It indicates it's a 1 CPU server. I was curious how many sites there were, and even what they were, to see if I could determine who or why the server usage is spiking.

I'm trying to learn more about hosting, and was curious about this aspect of shared hosting. I'm also looking for a way to throttle my own site to avoid causing a spike on my server. Does anyone know of a way I can ensure that my CPU usage does not exceed a predetermined amount so my hosting company won't pull the plug? Would throttling the bandwidth be possible, and perhaps a way to achieve that?

Is that all on a single server sharing resources?

Server Load Issue, 2 Sites On One Server

Mar 10, 2008

I am facing a strange issue with two RPG games sites that i am hosting on a 2GB ram server with softlayer, each of these sites was running on a 512MB VPS and they were doing fine but i decided to move them to better server so things run smoother when each has 50+ members online.

So the issue is when i have around 40 online members on each site, they start coughing up mysql errors, sometimes the sites just hang and stop loading, server load goes up to 3 or 4 but memory usage remains around 40%, I also notice that mysql uses the most of the CPU usage, around 75%

What i probably need is for someone to identify the cause of this, can it be an attack of some sort? or is it probably some code issues in the sites? do you recommend anyone that can have a look at this?

How Many Sites Have You Stuffed Onto One Server

Dec 17, 2008

time for a fun thread started for no other reason than morbid curiosity.

For those who would like to brag, how many websites have you dared to cram onto a single server? I don't mean parked/aliased domains that point to a single webiste; I'm talking about separate, unique, individual websites.

I know there are a lot of shared-server hosting companies that offer to host an "unlimited" number of domains from your $5/mo. hosting account, and I'm sure there are a few crazies out there who actually allow (tens of?) thousands of websites on a single server, regardless of performance issues.

Our policy is no more than 500 unique websites per physical server. This is NOT because of resource usage problems (average CPU utilization is well below 10%) but because we want to limit the number of sites affected if a server crashes, or God forbid, gets hacked. Based on how low resource utilization is, even our P4 servers should be able to host thousands of sites without resource starvation. (P4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 2x750 SATA disks in RAID1)

So how about it? It's your chance to brag. How many sites have you dared to stuff on 1 server, and what were the specs of the server?
