How To Setup A Private Proxy Using Web Host
May 17, 2007
how to setup a private proxy (for personal use) using web host?
What script or software to install on the web host?
I heard that some web hosting company, especially for shared hosting plans, doesn't allowed that to be installed...
Is that true?
If so, anyone know which web hosting allow it? anyone have experience doing so?
For proxy, my monthly usage will be well below 1GB.
I plan to buy a shared hosting plan to do some blog, websites & proxy.

Is there a hosting provider that can host my private proxy (for myself only) with cgi hosting (for cgi proxy - I'd like to stay away from php based proxies) and provide multiple ips? Preferably different class C ips?
I want to host SQUID proxy on it too.
Price, of course, as low as possible, but I understand with these specific requests that low price is really last on my list.

I’m summarizing below what we need.VPS with dedicated USA ip.
Private & secured proxy installed. Need to do SSH SOCKS tunnelling (Used for online communication/surfing by our helpdesk staff)
Ability to host 2 or 3 low traffic websites. (LAMP environment)
Our Budget: $10 to $15 per month. Paid thru Moneybookers.com on monthly basis.
Do u think any reliable VPS provider can offer the above? What disk space, bandwidth, control-panels and other features we should expect in the above budget?

I'd like to set up my server as a proxy for my own private use, where in my home PC's browser I can tell it the server's IP, port, and the password that I set, and it will function like a normal proxy. How can I do that? What software do I need and so on.
All my servers are on Linux machines.

I'd like to make a private proxy server on a Linux VPS. That way, I can use the VPS's IP address when surfing (I would configure it as a proxy in my local browser). What software would I need for that, and how do I allow only access *from* my local computer's IP address. And can this also be done for non-HTTP traffic?

I have a dedicated server with iWeb, but due to revenues being cut short, I'm in search for a new host. Possibly a VPS host that isn't expensive or a shared host.
Anyways.. I'm looking for a good host (nothing like the oversellers at Dreamhost) that would work for me.
I'd be hosting some domains-- about 10. Three are majorly active, 1 is moderately active, and the others are hardly active.
I've tried Dreamhost's shared hosting (along with a PS from them) and that night (my first night with them), their servers went down. HostRefugee, tried them, the server couldn't handle the load and was quite slow. (may be due to coding)
So yeah, suggestions? I know how to setup a VPS if needed.

I plan on purchasing a dedicated server to run a few proxy sites. However, i don't have a lot of Linux skills to administrate my own server. But i've always been able to figure stuff out so i feel pretty confident that i can get it going on my own. Anyways, My original idea was to use cPanel to run the web server for the proxy sites however i feel that using cpanel is not a great idea since i also wanted to maximize my servers performance and i hear cPanel can take heavy resources. So anyways, I just wanted to know what some other people here might think and if possible any recommended guides on setting up a linux webserver would also be appreciated as well.

I'm trying to setup a VPN server on windows 2003 standard. It suppose to work like this if configuration is correct: the server will have 20 static public IP addresses, each of my workstations will use one of the 20 IPs to connect to the server, then connect to the internet with the same IP it connects to the server. So if I do a IP lookup, each workstation will show a different public IP but the server will always assign the same IP to the same workstation.
Now all my workstations can connect to the server with any of the IPs I have, and they can surf the internet with no problems at all. However, if I do a IP lookup, every workstation shows the same pubilc IP which is totally not what I wanted. I have searched google and not much useful infor come up. Can any of the experts here help me out?

My system consist of Ubuntu 14.04 server running LAMP. I am running Apache 2. On the same machine I am running Shiny server and running my apps through port 4949.
[URL] ....
I also am running an additional Shiny server copy on a virtual box through port 3838. All is running very good. I have an html web page running on Apache 2. I can view it and all my apps running on both Shiny servers from any place on the web.
My concern, however is security. I have port 3838, 4949, and 80 open. How can I set up Apache to run as a reverse proxy for my both of my Shiny servers (ports 4949, and 3838) and also continue to host my web page securely.
I have also attempted to set up a self-signed certificate using the following procedure but it is not working. I used the following instructions and followed them verbatim.

How to set up a reverse proxy for my Shiny servers?

I'm looking for a host located in UK that can accept/support vpn/tunnel connections to the VPS - creation and access to vps' /dev/net/tun (TAP/TUN device) for use with tunneling services like vtun.
I am currently a customer of webhosting.uk.com, they look very good host but unfortunately they dont accept or support vpn on their VPS plans.
The bigger the list of hosts supporting vpn, the best.
Maybe hosts of other european countries too, if connection speed is acceptable.

to setup 1.domain.com to another host
I have domain (domain.com) which is on dedicate server with root access.
also have 2-nd-domain.com which is on hostgator host(where can i add domains via addon domains)
now i need to setup 1.domain.com subdomain on hostgator.
how can i do it ?
pls correct me, if i'm wrong
1. via Directadmin Subdomain Management tool (on domain.com) add "1" subdomain
2. check "DNS Management" section -> 1.domain.com is on main domain.com IP
Unfortunately there isn't any option to edit this record. i can only delete it and add manually. (i know, that i can do it via SSH - > edit config file, but i don't have enought experience to edit files via SSH. just know, few commands, how to archive, reboot, move, etc ...)
delete this record and add manually
DNS Management -> Add Domain Records ->
1.domain.com - A record =IP of hostgatore host
btw, did i need to add NS records?
3. go to 2-nd-domain.com and try to add 1.domain.com via addon domains.
hmm
it seems, that i'm doing something wrong, as i got
Quote:
Using nameservers with the following IPs: **.***.***.**2, **.***.***.**1 (my main domain IPs) Bind reconfiguring on gator using rndc
Created DNS entry for 1.domain.com
account is created, but IP-s are wrong

I have a fresh Ubuntu 14.04 install (desktop). I installed Apache, php and mysql from APT and updated everything.I tried to setup a virtual host using these directions: URL...I followed them to the letter:
o I created a folder /var/www/mydomain.local/public_html
o I copied the 000-default.conf in sites available and modified it
o I added mydomain.local to my hosts file (with IP of 127.0.0.1
o I used a2ensite to enable the host
o I used service apache2 reload
When I went to mydomain.local in firefox, it took me to the default host main page.I tried a restart of the service and even a reboot of the computer. No change. On a theory, I used a2dissite to remote 000-default from the enabled site list and reloaded the service. I got the home page for mydomain.local after that.
I created a named host called localhost and reloaded the apache. When I went to http://localhost it took me to the mydomain.local homepage. Rebooted the computer. Now, localhost gives me the apache default home page and mydomain.local does not work at all (I get a server not found).
I get the feeling that there is an apache configuration item I am missing but I cannot find it.

I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements.
ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair.
If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there.
Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices?
One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

I have recently left dreamhost in search of a more reliable and speedy host. The only thing I will be missing from dreamhost is their customer support which is very good. In fact I didn't think it could be topped by anyone...but I was proven wrong (at least so far).
So what host did I choose? Downtown host obviously (based on title : P). This is not a FULL host review, just initial setup and support which normally would be a huge ordeal for me without help.
Anyway, I bought my hosting a few days ago and requested a site transfer in their support ticket system. I was greeted within 10 minutes by the support team walking me through the steps I needed to take in order to get it going. Once I gave them the proper information, the transfer was done in under an hour for four-five sites. I then tried setting up the sites by connecting them to the new databases that they transferred my data into. Didn't work like I thought it would so I continued to mess around with it until I basically screwed up my initial database...oops. Another ticket to support and within 10 min I get a reply that they will transfer the sites and repopulate the database again for me. Very nicely I might add. No sarcastic emails because the dumb noob messed up his database or anything : ]
The new transfer was complete and I set up everything without a hitch (since I figured out what I did wrong).
All this was done through a series of around 20-30 support emails. Every one was answered often within minutes. None over 10 minutes. All were pleasant answers and none were snotty in the least. Thank you Jorge, Sabastian and Diego for helping me with the problems. Their support indeed beat the crap out of dreamhost's. I've rarely gotten a response that quickly.
My package is nothing to scoff at either. 5GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth for around 65+ a year. That's right a year. The sites have run perfectly so far and the speeds have been VERY fast compared to dreamhost's.
I'd say I am incredibly happy with my initial setup with downtownhost. I will post a follow up review in a few months addressing my experiences with reliability and such. I expect it to be another good review, as I haven't been able to find a negative one for downtownhost on WHT.

a Control Panel for OS X 10.4 (non server)?
Current setup:
OS X 10.4.9
Postfix
Apache 1.3.33 (Darwin)
Is there a better setup? I have an extra (older) mac machine that I could play with. I would prefer free software recommendations.
I still consider myself a newbie at this even though I've been hosting my own business and personal sites for a few years now. I am now looking into maybe providing services in the near future to the public. My goal is to manage the entire service from equipment to customer service.

I am trying to setup a subdomain and/or virtual host to redirect to a specific port and path. I have setup my server with DDYNS through my domain name registar. Through the ddyns client I have set it to assign a subdomain of "outside.name.com" so that my server will have a easy name to get to instead of a dynamic ip address.
I have also setup on my registrars host records another subdomain of "inside.name.com" with a static IP address for internet network accessing to my server. My problem is that I have a service/program on my server that I need access to both internally and externally and this service can only be access through a port of 32400 and HTTP address of /web. (e.g. outside.name.com:32400/web or inside.name.com:32400/web)...
Is there a way that I can create a VirtualHost or Subdomain of "service.*.name.com" that redirects them to ":32400/web" of the hostname they're on? (e.g. service.outside.name.com automatically forwards or proxies--to keep it pretty--to service.outside.name.com:32400/web)
