Apache :: Slow Download Speeds On Windows Machine
Aug 27, 2010
Apache seems to have a maximum client download speed of 5Mb/s. That too after I use these commands:
# Improve file transfer speeds on Windows Machines
EnableSendfile Off
EnableMMAP Off
Which without, the speeds are even slower!
I know for sure the server I am running Apache on can go to much higher speeds (2MB/s to even 12MB/s) because I tested it via FTP.

I run mdaemon mail server and IIS6. Recently the machine started acting real freaking slow and I noticed that mdaemon was taking up 25-50% cpu almost all the time. When browsing through my computer/explorer, it takes a number of seconds (about 5-10) to show all the folders as you drill down any directory tree. Also, when you right click on any folder/set of folders/set of files/individual file, it takes a good 5 seconds for the right click menu to show up.
The entire machine is just going butt slow for some reason and I'm at a total loss as to why. Here are a few bits of info regarding how the machine responds to things. If I reboot the machine, its totally fine for a short time... mail takes up the usual 1-5% cpu and all folder browsing is normal and speedy. When the machine does become slow as crap, if I turn off the mail server, the machine still runs super slow, nothing changes really. The folder browsing takes forever still and so does right clicking anything. I've done a full virus scan, and nothing. I'm not sure what else to do, but there are no processes running that are taking up a lot of cpu or ram that might be programs causing problems. Bandwidth is not being eaten up either, its on a T1 and on average does about 5-10GB of total IN/OUT bandwidth and that has not changed. I'm not stupid when it comes to computers, but I'm at a total loss as to what could be causing this.

I'm currently using ipower, which just switched to fewer but larger servers. The impact for me is a new throttle in download speed, which is about 350KB/sec (although I can do FTP downloads when logged in at 500KB/sec. Previously, with the more but smaller servers, you just got a share of what was available on the server with no throttle, and when activity was low on a server, it was enough to max out my cable's limitation of about 1.5MB/sec (12 mega-bits / second).
It seems that few web hosting sites will specify typical download speeds from a web hosting account. I'm hoping that members here could report what they are getting from various web hosting services.
My web site is
jeffareid.net
A "hobby" web site, mostly videos from car racing games, just niche market enough to not attract excessive traffic.

Can someone who has a server with ecatel check what their download speeds are from USA?
I'm getting < 30kb/s and the port is at 20mb/s... so there should be much more speed.

I have seen that most hosting companies will post a download link with a file for speed testing purposes. I understand that I can download this and watch the speed, etc.
What is the best way to do a download test?
For instance if I just download the file to my machine I am concerned that I am not doing a good test. I am using firefox on XP and while the download is running it shows a speed that goes up and down. I am not sure if that is a realtime number or a cumulative number based on the total download to date. If it is cumulative then I guess I would just watch the number towards the end of the download to get an idea of the speed.

For those of you that complain about the slow loading speed of your sites due to being on over-loaded servers or over-sold bandwidth, why do you think that the discounted rate is worth the loss of customers that you might earn if your site loaded faster.
Have you ever given your sites a try on a quality host where your site loaded faster? You might be surprised at how much more effective your marketing was when surfers stay around long enough to see your site load.
Some times in the effort to secure such a great deal and save a penny, you wind up loosing a dollar, it might not make a difference to all of you but some will be surprised at the ROI for a bit better hosting!

I just got a VPSlink account about a month ago and for all testing purposes, it has been great so far [my first VPS]. But I haven't transferred my main site to it yet mainly due to one specific question about download speeds. Quickly, here's what I've found about their network...
VPSLink is owned by Spry, so from all I can tell, they're using the same network speeds. Which are:
Unmetered: 1.5 megabits per sec in total traffic.
Metered: Spry's site says "throughput of up to 8Mbps"
Ok, so here's what I'm trying to find out:
I'm running a small software business with some downloads (all legal of course - they're mine ) and would like to know what the real-world download speeds that users would normally see when downloading my files. Here are the knowns:
a) Let's assume for this question that all of the user computer's are on very quick connections, so their speed wouldn't be an issue.
b) An example file would be say, 20 MB.
I'm most looking to see how speeds would be (in Kbps) if say, 20 people are downloading a 20 MB file at the same time (again, with their connections being extremely fast; fast enough for the sake of this example to not be a factor - so the max speed would only depend on my VPSlink server's connection).
I don't know of a good way to really test this since I only have access to 1 physical connection. I did try a test with a friend. Here's what happened:
I normally get about 500-600kbps sustained on my cable modem, as does my friend. When downloading a test file on my server I was able to get about that when downloading all alone. But, when my friend and I downloaded it at the same time, both of us got around 350kbps -- so the total speed about dropped in half. Again since my site is for software downloads, and when releasing an update to one of our products, sometimes I'm guessing 20+ users download simultaneously for a couple days.
This currently seems to work ok on Dreamhost, but for many other reasons, we're needing a VPS. But would this vastly decrease our file transfer download speeds to users? If users got something horrible like 2kbps, that would most certainly loose a lot of business for us since they'd just get frustrated and cancel for the most part.
Does anyone know of a rough estimate on how to figure this out, or even better, are there any VPSLink customers out there that have experience with this?

I have two servers running windows 2008(rtm) and I'm getting just crappy transfer speeds between them.
server 1:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
dynamic mirrored disks (windows software raid, ick i know
hyper-V, 6 or so VMs, not real heavy load
server 2:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
3ware 9650Se raid card, raid1 (using latest engineering drivers/firmware)
The servers are connected to each other via gigabit crossover. When I start to do a file transfer (a 40gb virtual machine, through windows file sharing) it starts fast. 60+MB/s says 12minutes remain but after 5minutes and 5gb or so of transfer it's slowed way down to 7MB/s and the network usage graph that was smooth and is now choppy.

I have a website on a linux-server working fine with PHP/Apache. The page loads a lot of css/js/image-stuff (total 84 requests, 220k), it takes about 4 secs to load via internet.
Now I'm testing the same page locally on a Win7-64-system (Apache 2.2, PHP 5.4). The system is not very slow (8 GB RAM, SSD, i7-CPU), but loading the same page as above takes about 50 secs.
The Q is: What might be the problem?
- I turned off firewall and anti-virus.
- I used mod_status: 150 threads, max. 11 seems to be used during the loading of the page.
- I tried php5apache2_2.dll with TS-PHP 5.4 and mod_fcgid.so with NTS-PHP 5.4, but the loading-time kept almost the same.
Looking at the "network-tab" in FF or Chrome, I found that a lot of subqueries get a timing like this:
Blocking: 11.96 s
Sending: 0
Waiting: 1 ms
Receiving: 6ms
So the loss of time seem to be in the "blocking"-section. I first thought of something like "limited number of TCP-Connections", but as said above, on the same system the page is remotly loaded fast enough almost without these "blocking"-parts.

I was using apache on my old xp machine but recently got a new computer, vista 64 bit which comes with IIS server.
I am familiar with html/css and starting to learn php, asp etc. Am I correct in assuming that it would be good to setup both Apache and IIS on my machine so that I can test database driven sites on my system, because I will want to work on many client websites who some will use windows/IIS hosts and others apache.
Or is it that with just IIS, I can test all sites in my dev environment since IIS supports everything apache does and more?
I am not sure if when developing a site for a client with a linux/apache host there is a lot of apache configuration that I would not be able to test on my local IIS server?
In fact, I am not even sure if a web programmer would need to do anything different at all dependant on which server type their code was running on.

I'm running apache to serve PHP files on (/home/www/) and thttpd to serve images on (/home/www/images)
thttpd runs on a different IP than apache, apache only listens to its IP.
After doing this, the number of apache processes decreased significantly, however performance has gone down, and apache is starting to crash very frequently (swapping).
Could there be a file-locking issue? Do I have to separate the images folder from the www folder?

We have a domain portal controller for windows. All the machines in the n/w are connected to it. So, when ever an user enters the user name and password it gets authenticated from the domain portal controller. So, my login can be accessed anywhere in the netowrk.
Example : my login is sabarishks which can be used in any machine under this domain controller.
But, if the system is installed with both linux and windows only windows username will be authenticated using the domain controller. Whereas, the linux users will work with in the system using /etc/shadow file. Hope, I am clear so far.
The requirement is same as above. The authentication mechanism for linux should work as windows. When ever an user is entered with a username and passwd, it should get authenticated from domain controller.
I mean, the user created in a windows machine should be used for linux login also. More importantly, It should work in all systems.
Which technology can be used to do this? Samba,Ldap, NFs or what?

I have an Apache server running on a virtual machine and I want to be able to access the pages it serves from a browser running on the host OS.
I am using OracleVM virtualbox as my VM platform.
I am using windows 7 as my host OS.
I am using ubuntu as my guest OS.
I have managed to set up a virtual host so that it works from browsers running in the guest OS (ubuntu)
But I cannot get it to serve these pages to a browser running in the host OS windows.
The config file in the apache2/sites-available and apache2/sites-enabled has the following config for the virtual host I am trying to access.
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
ServerName testsite
DocumentRoot /var/newserver

I am 3 days new to figuring out how to get Perl scripts to run on my Windows XP box. I downloaded and installed the Apache installation file "httpd-2.0.65-win32-x86-openssl-0.9.8y.msi" and the "strawberry-perl-5.18.2.1-32bit.msi" from the perl.org site in hopes that I could get a feedback form to work for a web site that I am working on.
Out of the many pages that I have viewed online of how to configure the Apache Server, nothing has given any favorable results with their explanations.
My last attempt was [URL] ..... where I could not get the example to work. I did the changes to the Apache file "Edit the Apache httpd.conf Configuration File" fairly easily but I must be having problems with the test.pl because I can't get it to work.
I used a different version of Perl (Strawbery from perl.org because it installed without giving me an error pop up after installation) and after copy pasting the script, in an attempt to get it working, I ended up changing it in hopes that I could get it working, shown below.
#!/strawberry/bin/perl.exe
print "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1
";
print "<phtml>";
print "<body>";
print "Test Page";
print "</body>";
print "</html>";
This is what the site says to create the program with:
#!/perl/bin/perl
print "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1
";
print "<phtml>";
print "<body>";
print "Test Page";
print "</body>";
print "</html>";
where I assumed that "#!" meant the "C:" drive and substituted the first "/perl" with the folder the Strawbery Perl had installed itself to and left the second "/perl" in the first line thinking that it was referring to the executable in the "C:strawberryperlbin" folder.
This is the error I get when trying to get the script to run when typing "localhost/test.pl" in the address bar.
"Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
........"
Know how I can change the title of this post to read "Configuring Apache HTTP Server 2.0 to run Perl in Windows"?

I find it a pain to look through the logs using PICO since it won't scroll and I'm a slight linux mainly windows guy.
Is there a way to either copy the whole log at once over to notepad or something or to download the file to my local PC?
Then I could go through it much easier.
I tried using copy in putty but that only copies the screen and these logs can be huge sometimes.

We're running a departmental intranet site on Apache 2.2 (on Windows Server 2003, if that matters). I'm trying to figure out how to post exe files on the web site so I can create a link and users can download the programs.trying various changes to my httpd.conf file, but no matter what I tried I get a 403 Forbidden error and the error.log file shows an error "Options ExecCGI is off in this directory:...".
1) I've tried putting the EXE in various folders.
2) I don't have a .htaccess file and I don't see anything in the httpd.conf file that seems to specifically relate to access for this file type.
3) If I put a zip file in the same folders, I am able to download or open it.
4) The httpd.conf file should be whatever was created when we installed Apache.
