It's imperative for you to know that web host features does not just stop with Unilimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth. There are other very salient features to which some people looking for a host provider have ignore, it is CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
You will not value the importance of a good customer support until you start having problems which you want resolved in the shortest possible time. For some host providers this is like telling them to do the impossible.
It is sad that some of the so-called reputable host don't even have a ticket system not to talk of an on-line chat system where you can ask questions and receive answers in real time.
So, for those of you that are new to hosting or want to change your host, then you had better look for a host that offers good customer support either by Chat, ticket system or forum.

There are a lot of people whether their web hosting providers are good or not. After months of purchasing their web hosting account they might discover that their web hosting providers are so bad. Therefore, you’d better checking your web hosting provider.
One of the most important parts related to web hosting is the supporting services. So when you purchase a new web hosting account, try to check their supporting services. Try to ask them a few technical questions even you don’t have a problem. It just tests their supporting quality. How do they answer your questions quickly? Ask yourself this question. If they spend a lot of time “two or three days”, it might be poor service. For this situation, my advice is to cancel your account. The most of web hosting companies offer 30 days money back and try another web hosting company.
There are many supports kinds:
* HelpDesk
* Live chat
* Supporting via Phone
* Supporting forum
* And so on
This is all about the supporting part for your web hosting provider. So this is very important to check this service.

I came to this site few days back only and was going through various discussions. After being on this website since last 1 week I am really impressed that members are really helpful to other members with their fair and valuable suggestions.
I do have a quick question for you and need your suggestions:
Q: Which web host I should go with where I will get around 20GB of space with PHP, MySQL, FFMPEG support.
Please recommend me a host with high uptime, good http response time, and reliable to host considering a long term relationship.

I'd like to start an ongoing thread here listing the 'Good Hosters with Good TELEPHONE tech support'. In other words, out of the 1,000s of host companies, this may cut it down to less than a dozen.
( And for all you Hosters out there who really want your company to grow, and want to know how, - it's easy: just read here.)
Good telephone support is the #1 ultimate requirement, because:
-It's a lot faster and easier for both the user and the host company, because you can state and answer all questions and clarifications on the spot, you don't need to continually pass new emails with new questions and clarifications, back and forth for days on end, until the issue is solved. It saves tech time and user's time. And saves a lot of nerves.
- It's the best way to sort the good guys from the bad. A bad company isn't going to bother to answer the phone, - or will make you wait way too long, - because they are likely getting endless complaints. The good guys are always ready to answer the phones, with a friendly voice, - because they really WANT to please the customer.
- If a company can't be bothered to pick up the phone, we can't be bothered to even consider them. They're a joke, and so won't be listed here on this thread. (So, before adding or listing any Hosters here, please verfify that they do have Good, quick, friendly, telephone support,; ideally 24/7, but 9am to 10pm might be acceptable, if it was supplemented by some emergency contact.
AND:
- Hoster ALSO needs good EMAIL support (and preferably, Chat online, extended hour availability). (I spend a lot of time overseas). It sems all emails should get a non-automated response within about an hour, - and then support should jump on fixing any problem.
I only need support a few times a year. To answer some questions, or fix a problem, or do an install. That's lesss than 1 hour total, so any company paying maybe $18/hour tech support should be able to handle this. It IS reasonable to charge a custm for extended calls, beyond say, 90minutes a year, IF you don't count the 80%? Of times an issue is the Hoster;s fault of stmg gone wrong, and don't count the 'hold' times.
ALSO IMPORTANT:
- Uptime
- site Speeds
- Monthly plans, no contract (Only a dishonest host will try to force you into a contract, where they can then ignore you.)
- Reasonable price. (? Maybe $12 to $18/month for a basic business site. We don't need massive bandwitdths, - we all know that's an overselling scam, and can't ever be delivered.)
- a good upgrade plan of bigger options. Maybe even VPS.
- Dedicated IP, and availbility of SSL
-PHP 5, mysql, phpMyAdmin, etc
- cPanel ( Some Hosts are using problematic panels, like Hsphere, which are slow to load, slow in operation, require many more clicks, have too many options, spread apart on many separate pages. Time is money, and this really slows down the ability of a small business to manage his own site in effective time. For example, one WHT user wrote somewhere: "I don't feel that HSphere's interface is nice at all, although I have worked with cPanel and DA all my life... I just found it to include un-necessary features or split features up in to different hard to find pages, such as backups - mysql backups you had to find on a completely different page than file backups, and then there were options to have it in the home directory or server-end backup, in which then you had to wait a good 10 minutes before it was ready. cPanel, just hit backup and hit download and instantly it does everything you need...".
I have used several hosters. Currently on Aplus.net and Godad, which have phone support, and mediocre service.
My LIST So Far:
- Liquidweb: a very impressive company with good, 24 hour support. But to get dedicated IP, you need to go with their $25/month plan. Yikes!
- NewIdeaHosting.com. A very small company. My call was returned, and the owner chatted with me for an hour on the phone! Plans have small bandwidth, but promises No overselling, and personalized attention. Extra $5 for dedi IP. He specializes in Small business sites, and small eCommerce sites. He has only 250 accounts, on 3 servers. He rents servers from the Equinox data center of Chicago. Seems exceptionaly honest.
- MegaHosters. Excellent phone support and WHT reviews. But company was taken over by another company, and so may well go downhill in future. Another problem: uses Hsphere.
- Steadfast. Has a good rep on WHT, and seems impressive. Tech answered the phone immediately, but they say they prefer emails. Sales phone has limited hours. Good price on $20 SSL. But, uses Hshhere.
- JodoHost 24 hour phone. But, uses Hsphere. An Indian company with office in Florida, and good rep. I like the idea of outsourcing phone support, if it makes it more available and affordable. But, the accent on the phone was very hard for me to understand, so maybe this might not work.....
- Hostgator. Yes, it's a big overseller, but seems to get good reviews/results anyway, and good phone support.
- ? ThePrimeHost ?? Mostly good WHT reviews; some dissenters. Site says 24hour phone, but when I called on several nights, no one ever answered...
- Can anyone add to this list? Please list only hosts that meet the above minimum requirements of phone support, etc. Especially useful is hosters you've tried.
TO AVOID:
- Avoid Arvixe. I had a horrid experience with them, here: [WHT forum]:/showthread.php?p=5097822#post5097822
- Avoid WebHostingBuzz. This company never returned my phone msessage inquiries.

I signed up three weeks ago. In that time I've had constant SQL server issues, very slow load times, four complete outages and the server was hacked at least once.
Reponse from tech support is slow as well and not very informative. From what I read of other clients there they have similar issues but apparently the server I had been put on was the worst. At this writing the server is down yet again.
I packed my bags and moved hosts and I am now demanding a refund. Avoid this company at all costs.

Around a year ago I hosted my forum with Cirtex hosting. I had a virtual dedicated server plan for around 4 months (at about $40 per month) and I was not impressed at all to say the least. For the first month or so it was fine and the server could cope with the large amount of CPU and RAM power required to run the forum...
However around 2 months after initially transferring the forum over the the VDS I noticed that the people on my forum were complaining of the forum being offline for hours and hours during the day. I thought that it might have been a one-off, or that there might just be some problems at Cirtex...So I waited for it to cool off. But after around 1 week there were still complaints from everyone and I came home from school quite often to an offline forum.
I told my dad about this (who manages a whole heap of dedicated servers at his work) and he started to investigate. After around 2 weeks of back and forward emailing with the Cirtex employees (who were total retards who couldn't speak English, nor understand what the hell a server was) we finally figured out that the VDS managing system was automatically shutting down my forum because it was using too much RAM and/or CPU. It's very weird, because they advertised their VDS server as having "1gb of swap memory and 256mb of dedicated", but apparently a lot of the dedicated RAM was used to run CPanel and the swap memory was totally unreliable and caused my server to ****ing crash when it swapped out.
I never once, throughout the 2 months that this **** went on, received any sort of warning or notification that my forum was using too many resources. All they did was shut me down automatically and cost me time, money and visitors....And I paid $40 per month for the experience.
I now receive extremely high quality hosting for free from my dads company, because they had a free server available. It has never been offline once in almost 1 year and is really fast and reliable.
I will never host with Cirtex again as long as I live, and I'm sooo happy that I'm no longer with them

To preface, I used to own a web hosting company but sold my customers after I came to college. I started hosting various websites with Cirtex Hosting and my experience has just been top notch so far.
With such incredibly low prices and after experiences with numerous hosts over the past 5 years, I didn't think that Cirtex would render the outstanding service that it has provided over the past year.
I have uptime monitored for my account and I'm amazed to see such a high uptime percentage ... much better than all the previous companies I have hosted with. I'm not hosting mission critical sites, but it's still wonderful to receive mission critical service for my small sites (at a cheap price to boot!).
Support is very competent and responsive. My support requests are usually answered within the day and issues are mitigated quickly. All in all, my experience with Cirtex has been top notch, and I would recommend them to anyone.
Hope someone might find this review helpful ... really do appreciate a good host when I come across one ... after being in the industry I know its hard to deliver a quality service, but Cirtex definitely delivers.

I'm trying to leave my old host, and consolidate all my websites into one host. I have about 5 websites, each running php/mysql with community features such as message boards and flash video.
In total on all the websites I have, i would say that the average is about 30 users online at the same during peak hours.
I need a host with the following at minimum:
# Web Server API - Apache
# Supported Operating System - Linux
# PHP Version - Minimum - 4.3.3
# MySQL Version - Minimum - 4.1
# GD complied with your PHP Build - Yes
# SendMail - Yes
# PHP safe mode - OFF
# PHP memory_limit - 32M
# Unlimited addon domains
# FFmpeg
# FFmpeg-PHP
# Mplayer + Mencoder
# flv2tool
# Libogg + Libvorbis
# LAME MP3 Encoder
# PHP file_uploads - 1
# PHP post_max_size - 100M
# PHP max_input_time - -1
# PHP upload_max_filesize - 100M
I plan to eventually move into a dedicated server, but can't afford the costs at the moment. However, I need a host where i don't have to worry about:
# my databases corrupting
# slow connections
# account suspensions for mundane things
# downtime

Things have become a little hectic.
I decided to go for a budget dedicated server because the shared hosting I was using was grinding to a halt several times a week.
I haven't used a dedicated server before, and wasn't 100% sure what I needed, so after lot's of going round in circles, I found the 123-reg £49.99 server and unlimited bandwidth, so I ordered it....and waited, and waited. Not so much as an order confirmation, or reply to my emails asking what was going on. Not a great start, so I cancelled the order.
OK, I have a budget of around £60 a month.
I need the server to be able to do mod_rewrites.
Unlimited, or a generous amount of bandwidth per month is important.
Good service if it all goes wrong is essential.
Preferably UK based, but will consider other countries if contacting them isn't a problem.
I need some kind of control panel as well.
i will be running a Vbulletin + VBSEO (hence the mod_rewrites) installation and a joomnla installation with lots of large images if that makes any difference.

our VPS hosting company did an upgrade the other day and now something is wrong with our home page, it takes about 30sec to load. They keep saying its a php problem, but the scripting is fine, the engine is fine and the only thing that changed is that they did an upgrade.
They don't seem to be able to grasp the problem, and it is making my boss go nuts. A web guy a know said it definately had to be something at their end, and everyone else is at a loss.

the latest period of the shift being going on currently i request you all to go through the transcript below which i had with their support center. when we talk about a refund for this downtime i suppose the owner 'PAUL' just stops responding ......

I'm running a site on a dedicated box, with no other user accounts. In order to get some of the features for my osCommerce site to work, I have to have a few files/directories set to 777 permissions.
It's my understanding that anyone who gains user access to the server would then be able to write/edit those files and directories, yes? It does not, however, mean that average joe web surfer has rights on them, correct?
So, assuming I keep up to date on security patches, lock the server down as well as possible, and keep my account as the only one on the server, is there any major security issue with leaving those 777 permissions?
I'd hate to close them off, as it would kill some REALLY helpful features, but security is important.

to sign up for a Linux based VPS (I guess I prefer XEN) to host an OS Commerce (OSC) store with 360,000 items in the catalog. I will host my pictures elsewhere, so my main concern is performance in regards to database (which is MySQL) performance when people browse and especially search the catalog.
I think I need hence a VPS with at least 1024MB dedicated RAM, a good CPU share, but only very little storage space (again, the server will basically only contain the database and the necessary OSC PHP files, nothing else)
a) Does anybody have experience with hosting what is essentially a DB server on a VPS and can give me some setup hits regarding memory allocation, server resource allocation, PHP configuration, Apache configuration etc. when using a VPS for this purpose?
b) Does anybody know about a provider which offers a relatively high memory allocation (at least 1024MB, burstable to double that) for a price of not more than US$50.00 / month?
Well, I would like to have a couple of other things, but they are not THAT important, just to mention them:
- cPanel/WHM included,
- four (4) or more IPs included

I've had Cirtex hosting for about six months now, I setup a simple Wordpress blog and the site was fine, other than being a bit slow to load on occasion.
About three days ago I tried to add an addon domain. I went through the usual process, and when I clicked submit I got an error telling me I could add 0 of 0 addon domains. The package I am on offered unlimited addon domains, but on the cpanel home page it said I had 0/0 available.
I opened a support ticket and told them it looked like my account wasn't configured to allow addon domains. Twelve hours later I got a response telling me how to setup the Nameservers for the domain.
I explained the nameservers are setup properly, the problem is my hosting account is not configured to allow me to add addon domains. Seven hours later I got a reply telling exactly what an addon domain was and how they work. Great, except that had nothing whatsoever to do with my problem.
I replied back again, this time with screenshots showing that my account was not configured correctly. The next day I get another response saying they had configured addon domains, it should work now.
I checked, and sure enough addon domains were now enabled, I added the domain and went to install Wordpress with Fantastico, and discovered that there was no longer Fantastico support on my account.
I reply back yet again, and tell them the addon domains work but now Fantastico is gone. Eleven hours later I get a response that Fantastico is once again enabled on my account. I logged in and clicked on Fantastico, and tried to install Wordpress again.
Now I get an error that that application is not available, please contact support. I tried pretty much all the applications in Fantastico and none of them are available.

I paid for 6 months because it was a very good deal. During that time, it was down more than 10 times for extended periods... I was on the scratchy server, which sucked.
I never used it for any of my important sites, but still.
So, it was set to renew on December 16th. I didn't want to continue the service, because, uh, it sucked. I sent in a ticket asking to cancel, but that I didn't want my service shut off until the my pre paid time was up. They told me to use the cancellation form.
I did this, and I got an email asking why I was quitting. I said my site was down all the time, they couldn't really argue with that.
Fast forward to the next day, and there we have it. The sites are down. The account is deleted. What a bunch of sleazeballs... I specifically said not to close my account.
I can't in good conscience recommend Cirtex. Steer clear.

These guys are atrocious.
So far:
1)I bought a vps from them, got it promptly, except it was set to the wrong port.
2)I requested it reinstalled without there 'extras' so my network admin could do it himself. They do not offer a reboot in there power panel.
3)They reinstalled it, but changed my root password, also it is still set to the wrong port.
4)I then spoke to there live support, they started talking then disappeared for about 10 minutes to chat on the phone without even telling me, leaving a paying customer sitting there thinking 'what the hell'.
5)I requested the VPS be set to my original password by email, and they haven't
I just wanted a clean VPS to do my have my own install done on... how was that so much to ask of them?
I have now sent in another password request, but my advice to you all, steer the hell away!
