VPS For OSCommerce 360,000 Catalog (Setup/Provider)
May 20, 2008
to sign up for a Linux based VPS (I guess I prefer XEN) to host an OS Commerce (OSC) store with 360,000 items in the catalog. I will host my pictures elsewhere, so my main concern is performance in regards to database (which is MySQL) performance when people browse and especially search the catalog.
I think I need hence a VPS with at least 1024MB dedicated RAM, a good CPU share, but only very little storage space (again, the server will basically only contain the database and the necessary OSC PHP files, nothing else)
a) Does anybody have experience with hosting what is essentially a DB server on a VPS and can give me some setup hits regarding memory allocation, server resource allocation, PHP configuration, Apache configuration etc. when using a VPS for this purpose?
b) Does anybody know about a provider which offers a relatively high memory allocation (at least 1024MB, burstable to double that) for a price of not more than US$50.00 / month?
Well, I would like to have a couple of other things, but they are not THAT important, just to mention them:
- cPanel/WHM included,
- four (4) or more IPs included

I want an Oscommerce based store and would like to know what are the best options for hosting Oscommerce? May be Godaddy or yahoo or any other? Kindly guide me in making this decision in the light of your experiences.

I'm running a site on a dedicated box, with no other user accounts. In order to get some of the features for my osCommerce site to work, I have to have a few files/directories set to 777 permissions.
It's my understanding that anyone who gains user access to the server would then be able to write/edit those files and directories, yes? It does not, however, mean that average joe web surfer has rights on them, correct?
So, assuming I keep up to date on security patches, lock the server down as well as possible, and keep my account as the only one on the server, is there any major security issue with leaving those 777 permissions?
I'd hate to close them off, as it would kill some REALLY helpful features, but security is important.

Do they do a good job of supporting OSCommerce? I want to customize stuff using OSCommerce for my site. Let me know from those who have used OSCommerce with Cirtex hosting.

I have to agree that the support as far as technical is good. Beware, they will not admit they are wrong when they take your money and won't give it back. They double charged me about 4 years ago and still will not paid me back. As far as me referring customers, they haven't paid me for any of my two referrals. I was paid for 1 year, nothing. The other paid for 2 years, after she had a bad experience with them, and I got nothing from that also. I'm waiting to switch, because they will not listen to me, they don't care to listen to the details. They owe me over $100.00 for all of this. If you can live with them taking your money and not listening to you when there is a accounting problem, then go for it. I want to go with someone that will listening and not accuse me of wanting to have a free service. Beware... you need to cancel the service a month or so before it actually expires, else you will be charge another year. I paid for another .com and wanted to cancel my service. I paid for my new name fastcreativity.com for 5 years. They applied it to my billed account that I was planning on canceling.
Anyway, they have some glitches in there programming on their website and it's a bug I caught and was trying to help them, but they changed me anyway. It is still unresolved, and no one there will help fix it. Actually catalog.com is now webhero.com which where all the headaches began. I've been with them for 10 years and this is how they treated me.

In PPA is there a way to restrict what applications from the application catalog can be used for each server? Right now I have a hosting node that can install anything from the application catalog, but I can't find anywhere in PPA to specify what is available and what isn't. If I go to APS Applications and My Apps, Add App, and select "Select an app from Application Catalog", firstly no matter which browser I use, the OK/Cancel buttons disappear. I have to open the frame in its own tab to be able to use this properly. But even if I select an app and choose not to make it available, it can still be added from the customer's hosting panel. In Plesk 11 I can choose which applications are available to the customers. I can't find how to do the same thing in PPA.

I am getting the following error in Plesk, on the Applications page:
"APS Catalog error: Unable to parse the ATOM content. DOMDocument::loadXML(): Opening and ending tag mismatch: hr line 5 and body in Entity, line: 6"
Clearing cache (as advised here: [URL] ....) - does not work, unfortunately.
As I noticed, the error started to occur right after Plesk was updated to v11.5.30_build115130819.13
Found this error in files:

As my clients' needs expand, they're asking for chroot ssh/sftp setup. I'm currently on a dedicated Linux setup but don't really have the time to set up a whole new box with full virtualization or investigate a full chroot solution (baby on the way), and to be honest it would be less hassle to move to a new provider than worry about down time with sites.
What I'm looking for:
- linux hosting
- hosting for 30+ accounts, some with several domains
- at least 6 IP addresses for SSL certs
- each account in a full chroot environment (ssh/sftp/ftp) so they can't poke around each others' files, or each account set up in a virtual machine setup (ie: openvz)
- maildir
- spamassassin
- php 5, mysql, perl 5.8.8
- suexec apache would be nice

I have learnt it is harder to setup than I initially expected (since I have just moved from a shared hosting service). I am in need of some help setting up my DNS servers, as I am very confused. Here is most of the info I know:
1) I am running HyperVM
2) I've installed LXAdmin
3) I own the domain (purchased from xeodomains.com) runemart.com
4) My VPS hostname is: vps.runemart.com
5) I know my IP
6) My host has said:
'For VPS customers that have a HyperVM login you can now host forward DNS on the DNS servers rdns1.vaserv.com (US)rdns2.vaserv.com (UK'
And I am unsure what this means/how to do it.
I am not sure if I need some more information to set up my DNS, however I am sure that I can get it if I do.
Now, my questions begin. Firstly, I need to point my domain - runemart.com - somewhere. I believe I need to set up my DNS via HyperVM or LXAdmin so that they are something like: ns1.runemart.com and ns2.runemart.com. Though, is this correct? Am I able to set up my own actual domain name servers, or will my domain have to point at something like rdns2.vaserv.com?
If anyone can assist me in this I would be very greatful, as I am waiting to get my website running. This is all I will ask for now, I will take it one step at a time =).

i am considering moving over from a dedicated server to a VPS solution, but host files via a CDN provider.
Can people give me their experiences of CDN providers please.
In particular i am looking at:
The prices they are paying
The quality of their bandwidth
The speeds they are getting (average)
Is your provider a reseller of another
Am looking to make available a variety of files from PNG, PSD, Vector and ISO files. Some of the files are as big as 10GB in size. I know some providers only manage certain file types.

I got a VPS, I have
ns1.mydomain.com 123.123.123
ns2.mydomain.com 123.123.124
For all my sites I used the first Ip until recently I tried to use the second ip for a particular site
Every thing went alright, I thought my site with second ip is working until yesterday I received a Call from India and the guy told me that he could not view my website because he got some thing like Network error DNS failed
I checked my site it was loading, I asked my provider and he says nothing is wrong and he can view my site
I checked
[url]
I got this Error
ERROR: Although you have at least 2 NS records, they both point to the same server, resulting in a single point of failure. You are required to have at least 2 nameservers per RFC 1035 section 2.2.
I talked with my provide but the response was this
''''''''''
This message will show up always when dnsstuff is able to detect that both nameserver names are pointing to the same physical system. This message doesn't affect connectivity and/or performance.

I've been having a rough morning with my hosting.
They're claiming that the problem is with the upstream provider.
So I had a question for all you smarter than a 5th grader guys.
When there's a problem with the upstream provider, shouldn't all my IPs go down?
I have a /24 with hosted with these guys, but some IPs are up while others keep going up/down.

I've been thinking about getting a dedicated server in the EU, as the UK is just to expensive to rent a dedicated server.
I've read reviews of the two hosts I found on the net (OVH and 1&1) and none were all that favourable. (Especially 1&1 heh)
anyone recommend some alternative EU providers? or perhaps any reasonable priced UK services?

Has anyone else here experienced terrible support responses.
Over a week ago I submitted a request to resubmit new CSR requests for 2 SSL certificates. I've ended up emailing 2 departments and trying to phone for a response.
When I phone the only response I've ever had is an answering message saying leave a message or email for a faster response!
The only email response I've ever had is a single reply saying I need to email a different department and a request has been forwarded to the correct department.
I aprreciate these are budget products but this is a dreadful support level and I'm seriously thinking I'll never purchase any of this company's products again, what if I purchase on a clients behalf, delays like this arent going to look good at all. I also appreciate its a seasonal period but come on, over a week!

I have been researching the vps market for a month or so now and have started to compile a list of questions to put to vps providers who get short listed. I would love some contributions!
1) What is the cpu and how is cpu capacity distributed, by account number limits, by assigning a certain number of mhz, is the asisgned capcity burstable?
2) ram is usually clearly advertised but who scalable is it? Can you add just extra ram or do you need to upgrade to the next package. Is it burstable and with what constraints.
3) are there any limits for the number of processes (shared hosting providers may limit processes to only a few, 15 for instance before terminating them). This isnt advertsised but need to be answered for dynamic sites with high traffic.
4) Number of simaltanious connections, both from individual Ips to the sites/account or to pop3 accounts. If the pop3 account sim con is low its will be annoying when trying to donwlaod email from several of your sites at the same time....attempts after the X number will fail.
5) Will your account have assigned bandwidth or will you just be sharing whatever connection 10/100mbps with the other uses on the server. This isnt such a big deal as a lot of servers will be streched to output 100mbps of data. If the connection is a 10mbps one then its much more important.
6) if you're used to a certain type of control panel make sure they have it and at what possible extra cost.
7) Check their terms and conditions for liability regards lost data. I chose a hosting company beofre because of their superior back up system, turns out they didnt use it and I lost 5 weeks of data (about $4000 loss for me). Their t & C avioded libility for any losses inspite of the fact that they advertises the b/u facility as a special feature.
8) quiz them on "Monitoring" and "Management". Us hosting novices may see these as the same thing but hosting companies do not. Monitoring is knowing that something is wrong, management is doing something about it. Many vps providers advertise full management but wait to be asked to fix problems that could have been lossing you money for days till one of your kind users lets you know.
9) What is their infrastructure...power, location, connectivity redundency like (ie how many T1,2 or 3 do they have and is that enough).
10) Support. Is it in house or outsourced....the later is bad as they are usually given little power to do anything and you have to wait longer for an inhouse guy to get off his lazy boy.
11) Do they limit the number of emails per period (ie like 500 per hour). This wont affect some but for those of us who have large memberships to send newsletters to this is a non starter.

Due to the above issues, I think i might want to get a VPS, it is essential there is no downtime, its a new site and I dont want our reputation to suffer due to downtime.
