Best Practice How To Mirror (or Sync) Site To Another Plesk Host

Sep 28, 2008

I'm looking for a method to basically clone my plesk site to another hosting provider also running plesk, the idea is so if my site A is down, I can just re-point the dns entry to Site B, and minimize downtime.

It makes sense to me to pay 2x hosting costs so I can have a site mirrored in case the main site goes offline, then I can just switch the dns to the new host. The trick is how can I automatically keep Site B mirrored as part of site A. Using Plesk Backup doesn't seem practical as it's not automatic. Does Cpanel have a site mirroring feature?

Would something like rsync work? Doesn't this require shell access? I'm looking for best practices to be able to mirror Site A to Site B in an automatic method..

Setting Up A Mirror/Mirroring Site With A 2nd Web Host

Aug 10, 2005

I currently have a mirror site set-up on a seperate server (with a seperate web hosting company) for risk management purposes.

For zero downtime dependability, a load balancer cluster checking both servers in real time, and directing traffic at only servers that were online has been suggested.

However this option is rather expensive. Does anyone know of any other options?

Looking For A Host That Would Mirror/Mirroring A Current Site

May 20, 2009

I was asked earlier today by one of the tech people at the university that I go to if I knew of any hosts that would offer some space/bw/access for a website that already exists. From what I was told, the host would not be the primary server for the website, so it would not require very much bandwidth, and the entirety of the website is only 300MB, so space isn't really an issue either (As most hosts now a days offer 1GB+). The catch is that they were planning on using rsync to update the mirror host, with the latest content from the live website, every 3 hours or so. Preferably, they want to spend as little money as possible on this and not buy a dedicated server or VPS somewhere, as that would be very costly.

So, does anyone here know of a host that would offer such a thing and allow SSH access to setup the rsync?

Mirror A Site Running Server 2003 Web Services

Mirror a site running server 2003 web services

I'm a network admin at a university and one of the departments is hosting their site on their own personal server running Server 2003 and Windows Web services. They've been asking me how would they go about mirroring their site in the event of a power loss intentional or otherwise. There are times during holiday periods where building maintenance will shut off power but they still want students to be able to get to their site. So they want to set up a mirror on another server in an office offsite.

I've done some research on the subject but I haven't been able to find anything dealing with mirroring Microsoft hosted sites.

Mystery Mirror/Mirroring My Client's Site Is On Another Domain But Why?

Jan 29, 2009

I'm having an issue with a client site and I am not sure what to do at this point. Conversations with the host (GoDaddy) haven't led to a solution and to be honest, I'm not sure it's their issue to handle although I will be firing off an email to their domain dispute department shortly. I spoke with a couple of supervisors there and they were as baffled as I am.

Here's the situation:

When people Google the name of the client's business, it returns their site but on a different domain. The entire site is there, nothing is changed but the URL. It's like having an unintentional mirror site except that none of the forms work which is what tipped off the users that something was wrong but of course, they don't notice that they're not actually on 'www.clientsite.com' so they think it's just a form error when in actuality, they're not even at the right domain.

There is really no way for this other domain to profit from mirroring the client's site; it's just a business profile type of thing with a few forms for contact, employment applications and vendor applications. No secure info is transmitted other than perhaps the occasional email address but we're not talking a heavy volume site, it's a niche market and really not something that would be a typical target. There's no eCommerce, no subscriptions, no financial info.

I'm at a total loss. Could this happen if this other site is hosted on the same server as my client's site? Could it be an actual error of some sort or would it have to be intentional?

The whois for this bogus site leads to DomainsbyProxy.com and I'll be sending them a letter as well but I'd really appreciate any input you all might have on HOW this could happen. Should I also contact Google?

Mirror/Mirroring Site Hosting/aka: Impressed At Ability Of Cheap Hardware To Serve Static HTML

Nov 5, 2009

We recently began to mirror a large number of open source projects with a dedicated mirror server on our network and I was surprised not only with how popular the mirror server has become, is, but also of the ability of the hardware we're using to keep up with the load.

At an given time, the mirror seems to be pushing at least 50 Megabits of trafficthe server is also an IRC server (irc.igsobe.com) for customers and internal staff communications.

The hardware is a low end Dell Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHZ server, running with 512MB of RAM and a 400 GB ATA hard drive. CentOS v5.3 is the operating system.

If you're interested, you can view the HTML logfile analysis here but that doesn't tell the full story as FTP users make up a good portion of the traffic. We've received over a quarter million hits in the first few days of November alone.

18:14:15 up 65 days, 9:04, 5 users, load average: 0.31, 0.69, 0.56

The only change that I made to the default configuration was lowering the maximum number of Apache servers to 128.

Just thought I'd share this information as I wouldn't have thought a server with such a small amount of RAM would be able to serve up so much data, even though we are talking strictly static HTML files.

I'll definitely keep this in mind when clients ask me for those "what type of dedicated server should I use for XXX" type discussions that are had all too often with clients.

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: Empty Host Name On IIS Site Bindings

Mar 23, 2015

Plesk, for an unknown reason to me, creates an "empty binding" on one specific website every time I make a "hosting change" on that very website (subscription in Plesk terms). What I mean by a "hosting change" is things like enabling/disabling SSL, adding/removing aliases and anything similar that might require Plesk to re-arrange the bindings for that website.

The issue exists only on one of the many websites I am hosting/configuring via Plesk, the others don't have any similar issues. The result of the issue is the given website being stopped by IIS since the "empty binding" is already in use by the "Default Web Site".If I go ahead and delete the empty binding from the given website, I can start the website up again. The Plesk version I am having is 12.0.18 Update #38, which I assume is the latest one.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Unable To Sync Subscriptions With Service Plan

Jan 29, 2015

I have a 'Service Plan' which has 270 subscriptions associated with it. When I navigate to 'Service Plans' page, underneath my plan it reads "Unable to sync subscriptions with the service plan" along with a yellow exclamation mark.

If I go into the plan there is another message near the "Update & Sync" button stating that syncing will take time and therefore be run in the background. When I click the "Update & Sync" button nothing appears to happen. If I then click on the plan again, as if to edit the settings I get the following "Warning: Subscriptions are currently syncing with the service plan. Please wait until the sync process is finished." and it prevents me from accessing the plan settings.

If I wait a while, I can eventually get into the plan settings again, which should mean that the Update & Sync has completed. However the "Unable to sync subscriptions with the service plan" warning is still present under my custom plan on the 'Service Plans' page and if I navigate to a subscription to check if it has been updated it hasn't.

If I change the subscription plan to another plan and then change it back to my original plan again, then the changes are reflected. But this is obviously a workaround.

Why doesn't the "Update & Sync" button do as it should?

Why is my plan "Unable to sync subscriptions with the service plan"?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Can't Sync Subscription With Command Line Interface

Dec 9, 2014

I have a subscription and I'm able to switch the subscription to a given service-plan, but I'm unable to sync the subscription with the plan, using the CLI. These are my commands:

/usr/local/psa/bin/subscription --switch-subscription <domain.com> -service-plan Hosting

result => The subscription <domain.com> is now associated with the service plan Hosting..When watching the webinterface in Plesk, I see the domain is "connected" to the service plan, so far so good. However, I notice that the subscription is not synced.

Back to the CLI, I've tried some combinations, but I can't get the subscription synced. The webbased interface keeps telling me that the subscription is unsynced. Here is what I've tried:

/usr/local/psa/bin/subscription --sync-subscription <domain.com>

And I also unlocked it (just in case it was locked) like so: /usr/local/psa/bin/subscription --unlock-subscription <domain.com>

The funny part is that the CLI tells me: "Subscription <domain.com> was synchronized with the associated service plans." but unfortenately it's not if I look through the GUI. Only if I click the sync-option webbased the subscription get synced. we have to transfer over 1000 domains and need to sync these domains with a given service-plan.

I have recently started using the slave DNS manager in the Plesk extension library. I've found that even for DNS zones that are switched off in Plesk, failed sync/transfers still try to take place between the slave and master. Why is this so?

Routing Practice

Sep 6, 2007

Our colo has two carriers, call them A and B. I have discovered the colo provider is round-robining traffic out it's two carriers on a per-packet basis, not per flow.

Assume we want to reach destination IP a.b.c.d.

%> traceroute -q5 a.b.c.d

Results show that at the hop leaving the colo's border router, some packets transit Carrier A and some Carrier B, to the same destination IP, during the same traceroute.

Is this a routing Best Practice, or am I correct in thinking this is the Lazy Man's way of load balancing across multiple circuits, multiple carriers? BGP route selection does not seem to apply here (i.e., either Carrier A or Carrier B but not both at the same time).

Shady Lil Practice At Softlayer

Sep 21, 2009

Well I was quite surprised to see this but basically if you cancel a server at softlayer unless you go through after the fact and cancel all the associated orphans like ip ranges, vpn users, etc that was allocated to the servers you cancelled they will still bill you for this.

I have seen the notice on the cancellation process and I have always stated in cancellation ticket to cancel this server and all addons for it.

I find out today that I have been paying for at least 20 ip ranges, 15 vpn users and even a cpanel license for servers that I have cancelled months ago. How insane is that?

When a person cancels a server, they expect that server and all addons such as ip ranges, licenses and vpn users that was allocated to those servers to be cancelled as well. This seems not to be the case at softlayer and this is nothing more then an obvious way to bill clients for things that they are not even using or really cannot even use.

I guess that is what someone can expect from some wal-mart style network but I think this is simply an unethical practice. Most people would assume all items associated with a cancelled server would be cancelled with the server, that is what softlayer depends on .

IN the end I guess it is my fault for not reading "the fine print" but Im about sick of this fine print crap where hosts can outright decieve you and rip you off and then later point out some fine print validating their reasons.

Has anyone else had this issue at softlayer?

Best Practice For Web Hosting On Your Own Server

Jun 27, 2007

I am currently web hosting my own site (at home) through port 8000 using firewire. My activation is by invitation only. This means that I have to manually activate you before you can post on my board. I do this for security reasons and plus there is no need to invite the outside world. However, anyone on the outside world can view the site. The url is in the form of xyz.abc.uvw.rst:8000/forums/ where xyz.abc.uvw.rst is the IP address and 8000 of course is the port.

In order to make my site more secure, I have also changed the admin dir so that you can't just url to .../forums/admin/ and then start typing in passwords.
In addition, the version of my board is hidden and html is disabled.

I believe that I am secure but I would like to know other best web hosting practice methodologies that will allow me to be even more secure, particularly in the case where I am hosting on my own computer in my own home.

Conduct Or Legal Operating Practice

Jun 29, 2008

I have a ethics and legality scenario I would like to pose here. This is to be considered a fictional scenario and any similarity to any real company or person is unintentional.

COMPANY X has colo racks in DATACENTER and hosts a client named COMPANY Y. COMPANY Y also hosts 50 small web sites on cpanel and 40 VPS servers on their linux VPS node in exchange for a discount or other compensation. During the month of may and COMPANY Y's bill raises from being 3000 past due to over 12000 past due to various reasons including purchasing of hds from the DATACENTER using COMPANY X's account, tech work dont by DATACENTER for COMPANY Y needed also billed to COMPANY X's account, as well as BW and rack costs. Seeing this alrming bill by the end of May COMPANY X begins putting pressure on COMPANY Y to pay some invoices as no payments were received during the entire month of may and COMPANY X is also having a hard time paying DATACENTER due to not being paid by COMPANY Y but makes efforts to pay 25% of the outstanding bill in June.

Near the end of june COMPANY X has had enough and arrives at the datacetner to attempt to move theritr clients off COMPANY Ys hardware so they can suspend service of COMPANY Y completely. On the visit COMPANY X brings 2 new servers in and begins moving clients of their over and COMPANY X notices this action and begins to suspend and remove access to all of COMPANY X's clients. COMPANY X then decided to power off the boxes of COMPANY Y and removes drives containing COMPANY X customer data for offline recovery. and because they beleived the DATACENTER might be untrustworthy enough to release hardware fromt heir rakcs without their permission. The drives were for as much colatteral purposes as for recoverying customer data. They then pack the drives in boxes and a bag and leave the datacenter having spent nearly 20 hours working and head on a long trip home and signs out of the data center in front of various techs holding the server parts and tools.

Upon arriving back to their office/home

They were informed that the removal of the HDs was not allowed byt he datacenter because the account was past due and it was discovered that several drives with cOMPANY X's clients were left in the datacenter which COMPANY X now wishes they had remembered to get. DATACENTER is furious and demands the account be paid in full by a fixed time or the entire colo will be cut power. COMPANY X scrambles to find others to help them and another major client who has alot at risk decides to help and a payment of $7160 is made to DATACETNER but it came in a few minutes past the deadline. DATACETNER had suspended servuce, and cut power but stated they wil return service shortly. Shortly after this it is discovered that several servers belonging to COMANY X and two other companies who were supsended in the same day were not int he rack anymore. DATACENTER accout rep responds with the following message in ICQ/AIM .....

Plesk Automation :: Adding Dedicated IP Breaks Site (visitors Land On Default Site)

Apr 14, 2015

Starting point: a working site using a shared IPv4, dedicated IPv6, and SSL. HTTP and HTTPS work, the latter only using SNI of course.

The good news: If I simply allocate an IP resource of 1 to a subscription it is pulled from the pool, assigned to the service node, assigned to the web site, DNS is updated, and the site is automatically changed to using a Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6.

The bad news: visitors land on the default web site of the service node, with the default SSL certificate.

Other info: I can't ping the new IP, even though it shows in "ip a l" and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0. [edited]

After the IP assignment, it is still installed, and /etc/httpd/conf/plesk.conf.d/ip_default/domainname.conf shows the new certificate is being used.

However, a second set of VirtualHost entries is created in server.conf for this IP for ports 80 and 443, with NameVirtualHost enabled on the new IP. The port 443 entry uses the default certificate. Apache's setup this default VirtualHost entry will override the web site configuration because Apache is listening on port 443 with the wrong cert.

If I go to "Change webspace settings" and toggle to Shared IPv4, Dedicated IPv6 the site works again via HTTPS, and Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6 breaks it again. Setting the SSL cert to None and back again does not work.

Setting the SSL cert to None, changing to a dedicated IP, and enabling SSL results in the server being inexplicably inaccessible...browsers no longer connect to either the default site or the correct site, and I don't see any entries in the vhosts's logs.

No HW Raid - FreeBSD Gmirror (soft-raid1) As Best Practice For Data Integrity?

Jul 30, 2006

Dedicated server has 2 HDD but I am not going to pay another $25/month for the hardware RAID solution (already stretched too far).

My plan is to install FreeBSD 6 and use Gmirror to establish a raid-1 "soft" mirror.

Advantages: Entire drive is mirrored including the OS. Drives can be remotely inserted or removed from the mirror set using a console command so its possible to uncouple the mirror and perform software updates on a single drive then re-establish the mirror only after the updates have proved successful.

Disadvantages: Lower I/O than hardware solution (not a problem for me) others???

I rarely see people consider software raid for a tight-budget server and I am wondering why? Could it be that other OS's dont have a solution as good as gmirror? Or is it just that crappy soft-raid in the past has left a bitter taste in admins mouths? Or perhaps admins need the extra I/O of hardware?

Host For A Kid's Site

Apr 27, 2008

I'm going to be extremely blunt and start off that although I'm not an unintelligent person, I'm very dumb when it comes to hosting and the lingo. So I would really appreciate the "Hosting for Dummies" version to find a good host

The closest I can show in what I am building with my partner is HERE (which claims to have had 90Million pageviews/month last year) Just basically a teen game and graphic site. It will be mostly flash games, php, various other scripts and forums.

I'm confident in saying they don't use shared hosting at least. Though what it is exactly I don't know. There is no way I'd get a dedicated server to begin with till we need it. I'm not sure what else a site like this requires (perhaps unlimited mySQL?) for a shared hosting plan. I was looking at HostMonster, Hostgator and Bluehost. I need good customer support for sure, I've had too many crap hosts in the past. I also need multiple domains (4-5)

In sum, does the shared hosting even matter at this point, or should I come back when we're in need of dedicated? I'm guessing cp usage will be the first to give out?

Moved To New Host Yet Sometimes See 'old' Site.

Jun 24, 2009

I recently moved a site from one hosting company to another. I went to the registrar and pointed the DNS at the new nameservers, and set up a new ftp account to upload the site. The DNS seemed to resolve ok after a few hours, (in my browser I was seeing the new host's default home page) so I uploaded the site to the new host.

Today sometimes I see the new site and sometimes the old!

I'll be editing pages and uploading them by ftp, then suddenly I'll see a different directory structure on the remote server. Similarly I'll refresh my browser while looking at the new site and... Hey! I'm seeing the page on the old site!

I've cleared the browser cache on my machine btw.

My guess is that either a server somewhere in the path (at my local service provider?) is throwing out old cached versions of the page, perhaps when it is busy, or that not all the nameserver/dns records have updated.
