Here are my requirements:
A. Space: 1/2 a secured cabinet
B. Location : Bay area
C. Power: 8 amps
D. B/w: 1 Mbps
I got quotes from
A. www.bayarea.net for 1 cabinet with 20 amps $699

I'm currently colocated in 365 Main in San Francisco.
Due to power limitations there I need a new place with 1-2 cabinets, about 25Amps and 1-2mbps committed.
I'm looking for a long-term, reliable, 24x7 NOC, with no surprises. If my servers are down, I'm out of business, so uptime (power+network) is the most important factor.
I will summarize the recommendations I get and post them back here.

I would really appreciate a response from anybody who works in a datacentre or runs any R200's.
Im trying to find out how many amps a R200 is likely to use on the following specs.
Quad Core Intel® Xeon® X3360, 2.83GHz, 2x6MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB
4GB Memory, DDR2, 800MHz (4x1GB Dual Ranked DIMMs)
C1 - Onboard SATA, 1 Drive connected to Onboard SATA Controller - No RAID
160GB, SATA, 3.5-inch, 7.2K RPM Hard Drive x2
Riser with PCI-E Support (1xPCI-E x8 slot, 1x PCI-E x4 slot)
Ive been on the dell calc and they dont even have the processor that im after in their calc for me to get a bearing... even then i couldnt trust it.
Here is the actuall link to the server im talking about.

When looking at the 1U's, I have to search really long and hard trying to find a half-decent host. A lot of companies skimp on something when offering colo, and makes for a bad day when that particular service is needed.
On the other hand, I see a lot of colocation offers for great deals on Cabinets and half Cabinets. High, premium bandwidth, PLENTY of amps, top of the line support, etc. It would be tempting to go for these, except I only have a single unit server.
I was going to give up on finding a good colo, then I got an idea. What if I got together a few other people, we all pitched in for our slice of a cabinet, and bring the price well within reasonable limits for those of us with low demands?
Would it be too difficult to do something like this? If you run across this topic and are looking for colo, would you be willing to give this a shot?

where to find the best prices on 5u rack space, 5Mbps bandwidth, and 5amps power in Fremont or San Jose?
Another question, I'm using a small desktop switch which can fit behind one of my 14 inch deep 1u server. Would colos allow this of would I need to pay for another U for the switch?

my company is looking for a colo provider in the Bay Area. We have done some research and the final choice comes down to these 2 companies: internap and ethr.net.
Price wise, Internap is slightly more expensive on the bandwidth, setup cost and cabinet rental.
Could anyone provide some recommendation based on personal experience? Our service is live video streaming, therefore we are looking for good network with low latency and with a bandwidth of 100mbps.

We are currently hosting a cabinet of servers in our office, looking at adding about another 3/4 of a cabinet worth of servers in a next couple of months. The office is in the Boston area, and we currently are using Verizon for both the loop and bandwidth.
While this is working fairly well, we are starting to look at colo options. We would like to stay in the Boston area, but do not have much experience with the local options.
We have two main questions:
1) What data centers are considered good in Boston?
2) Is it worthwhile to consider resellers once you exceed a full cabinet?

We are transitioning from an on-site data center to a collocation facility and are having problems negotiating the right amount of power, the type of connections, and the PDU power strips that we need.
For simplicity lets say that we are going to rent a 10 ft by 10 ft cage area. This should house 4-5 rack cabinets.
The amount of power we are given for this area varies with the lowest being 120 watts/sq. ft and the highest being 175 watts/sq. ft.
With 120 watts per square foot that comes out to about 6.25 circuits that are 20 amps for a 10x10 space.
For the initial setup we would have a Cisco 73xx Router, a HP 26xx switch, an Avocent IP KVM, an EMC CX3-10 SAN, and our Dell PowerEdge 2950 III servers (4).
Using the calculator at: dell.com/calc I show the power requirements for all of the Dell equipment to be:
C13 Power Cord Qty: 12
Amperage on C13 Cords: 26.49 amps
System Heat/Power: 2754.6 watts
Total Current: 13.24 amps
The way I was envisioning this was Rack 1: Router, Switching, KVM on a 20 amp circuit and Rack 2: Dell Equipment on a 30 amp circuit. Is that right?
Additionally, I'm confused about single phase vs. three phase power in the data center and what most people choose to implement. I've heard talk of getting redundant power in each cabinet but that seems like you limit yourself to half of your space doing it that way.
And the last thing is it's confusing about what type of PDU you need to put in your racks to make it all come together. All of our equipment should be using IEC C13 cords and we're thinking about going with Avocent for all of the KVM/PDU so we can centrally manage it.
It seems to me that if the cost is roughly the same we should be pressing as hard as possible for the highest watts/square foot since that seems to be one of the most important commodities in any data center.

Just wanted to get some opinions. I assume you are trying to colo, and you will fill 1/2 rack in 1 year. I have two options:
1. Get 1/2 rack, 20amps first and get another one when full.
2. Get full rack, 20amps and add 20amps later.
The first one will save $250/mo. The second one will give you redundancy and privately your rack/cabinet.

It has come to my knowledge that SSL certificates that use the MD5 algorithm have been successfully hacked and are vulnerable to attacks. Only Verisign (owners of RapidSSL since 2006) have stated that they have stopped using MD5-signing for RapidSSL certificates, and will have phased out MD5-signing across all their certificate products by the end of January 2009

My VPS provider just setup and delivered my new VPS ;-)
He also optimized and secured it.
These are the details of the setup he did:
Cleaned up /etc/hosts
SSH Server Hardening
PHP Hardening
Advanced Policy Firewall (APF) With IP Blacklists Configured
APF Add-on - Brute Force Detection (BFD) Dos/DDoS Prevention
Basic Apache Optimization
Basic MySQL Optimization
Is this enough or should i do more to let the VPS run smoothly and secure?

some hostings around WHT have a small "feature" enabled on all shared or reseller servers. This feature allows read/write on local files. Php safe mode or open_basedir won't help here
CREATE TABLE data (text LONGTEXT);
LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE '/etc/named.conf' INTO TABLE data;
This SQL query allows me to load local 'named.conf' to mysql database.
Code:
SELECT text FROM data INTO OUTFILE '/etc/file';
This SQL query allow me to write data from mysql to local file.
Last year I bought some shared and reseller packages, it worked 100%. None from 17 providers have disabled it. Also some of them are well known and big.
I've wrote emails to them, reported this "feature", hope they have disabled it ;-).
To disable add to my.cnf file :
Code:
[mysqld]
local-infile=0

I tried searching around but maybe someone can steer me in the right direction.
I, as probably many other people, are in an interesting predicament.
I love my VPS right now...however obviously since I started with my VPS I'm about to out grow it, with the amount of power that I need.
What I'm looking for is a server which is completely managed, completely secured (some sort of active virus scanning), however I can get in there and have complete control like I would with my VPS, but obviously with more resources.
What I'm looking for is:
2-4GBs of ram
Pentium D (minimum) up to a Xeon 3220 SINGLE processor
1000 - 2000TB / bandwidth
100mb/s uplink
Windows 03 would be great, I'll settle for CentOS though
Budget max is $170/mo.

how to check if you host has made their job correct ?
We are looking into a PCI scan just because of the security, we do not need to be PCI compliant, but the security standard is what I believe the most reliable to stick to.

There has been a recent rash of Windows 2003 customers being hacked and having "UTorrent" installed, as well as having their Administrator password changed, rendering the server inaccessible.
At the moment, we have yet to determine the vulnerability in Windows allowing the hackers to breach the systems however we believe it is related to RDP.
We highly suggest you are complying with the following, to lessen your risk of having your server compromised:
1) Run RDP on a non-standard port
[url]
2) Run a software firewall on your machine, blocking ALL unnecessary ports on your server. You should only have the bare minimum open.
3) Limit any non-public access to your IP and trusted IP's only. This will prevent any other outside networks or servers from reaching your machine through ports which are not meant to be public (http for example)
4) Ensure you have FULL updates for your Windows O/S, immediately.
5) Ensure any 3rd party software you are running, has also been fully updated to the latest version including any patches.
Please make sure these suggestions are implemented immediately to lessen you risk of being hacked by the current wave of exploits.

What do you guys think about putting 40 Amps into one rack? Our colocation provider wants to whine about it and not allow it. When we're paying them $1000+ a month - I think this is just shoddy. They say it's for heat concerns - but really this just makes me mad. We have fifteen 1U servers in there, and can't get much more on our existing 20 amps.

I recently got a quote for server co-location at Hurricaine Electric in Fremont CA- they quoted me a good rate for my 1U server, but added that it only comes with 2.5 AMPs. My new Dell SC1450 has a 600W power supply- so it could be drawing 6.667 AMPs- any tips on how I can figure out what it's actually drawing?

I have always found this odd and do not understand enough to figure it out.
Any knowledgeable people would be cool.
My datacenter has given me 2amp circuit for my computer. It seems to run fine on it.
Looking at the back of my power supply it says the following
520Watt max
Input rating
100-240v~,50-60Hz
7A-3A
Output rating
+3.3V & +5V combined 150W max
12V combined current 39A max
(and a lot of other stuff on amps and volts for output).
Now, Watts = Volts * Amps.
So if I have 520watts and 12 volts would be 43 amps
If it means 520 watts and 3.3volts it would be 157 amps
However it seems to max at 39amps on the back for output.
I imagine input is all that matters here and at 520 watts and 100 to 240volts that would be
5.2 amps to 2.16 amps
And the thing says 7amps to 3 amps on the back for input.
So....I imagine that is the max it can pull before dying.
However, I have 4 drives, 4 ram sticks, and 2 quad core cpus all going and I would figure I am at least halfway or more of the power use.
And the power says it starts at 3amps anyway.
But I only get 2amps.

Just looking at getting a 1u box with a local provider. They provide .75amps per box.
Previously we have gone a bit crazy and gone with dell 1950s with dual quad cores and a few disks. As you can imagine these specs go well over the .75 amps.
What type of spec server would you recommend for that power? Looking at something for small scale web hosting, duall HDs and about 2gb of ram.

I have one server now which will be doing some intense PHP/MySQL serving. I want to grow into a second server that will handle the Apache server and leave MySQL on the original box.
Question is whether I can get something decent that will only pull .5 AMPS? Why? I have to choose a co-location provider and have narrowed it down to 2- the one I like very much because will give me 7U of rack space for $200 a month- but they limit you to 2 AMPS and my Dell SC1435 pulls about 1.4 at top usage.
The other option is another co-lo (closer to my home) that is just 1U space and costs $149 for the 1 Mbps burstable. So the it will cost $298 a month when I add the second server.
So can anyone suggest some decent low energy boxes for serving (for example) 250 very low storage CMS (Joomla) sites where the database backend is offloaded to another server (connected via each server's secondary LAN port)?
