We are currently hosting a cabinet of servers in our office, looking at adding about another 3/4 of a cabinet worth of servers in a next couple of months. The office is in the Boston area, and we currently are using Verizon for both the loop and bandwidth.
While this is working fairly well, we are starting to look at colo options. We would like to stay in the Boston area, but do not have much experience with the local options.
We have two main questions:
1) What data centers are considered good in Boston?
2) Is it worthwhile to consider resellers once you exceed a full cabinet?
where to find the best prices on 5u rack space, 5Mbps bandwidth, and 5amps power in Fremont or San Jose?
Another question, I'm using a small desktop switch which can fit behind one of my 14 inch deep 1u server. Would colos allow this of would I need to pay for another U for the switch?
my company is looking for a colo provider in the Bay Area. We have done some research and the final choice comes down to these 2 companies: internap and ethr.net.
Price wise, Internap is slightly more expensive on the bandwidth, setup cost and cabinet rental.
Could anyone provide some recommendation based on personal experience? Our service is live video streaming, therefore we are looking for good network with low latency and with a bandwidth of 100mbps.
We have a special application need colo space in the Washington DC area, it need 1/4 rack space, it has limited bandwidth requirements (1Mb), 5A power, 3 static IPs.
Here are my requirements: A. Space: 1/2 a secured cabinet B. Location : Bay area C. Power: 8 amps D. B/w: 1 Mbps
I got quotes from A. www.bayarea.net for 1 cabinet with 20 amps $699 B. www.he.net for 1 cabinet with 15 amps $600 C. www.svcolo.com/ for 1 cabinet with 15 amps $695
I am wondering who can give me 1/2 a secured cabinet for around $300 to $400
I set up a server with Toqen.com in their colo at 325 Hudson St. in Manhattan. I was attracted to Toqen via a post of theirs titled "New York City Colocation - 1U + 1MBPS - $100/mo!", and have been working with Francis to get everything ready for last night.
Some of the steps that I did was to check out Toqen's history on Internet Archive, got customer references, and had a new friend with good connectivity in UK do a test of their connections. Everything was very solid and I decided to move ahead with it.
Once I got there, I met up with Francis and we were also assisted by some of the friendly folks from his upstream. The data center is extremely clean, being an old Verizon facility. I've been in a fair number of large facilities (365 Main, UUNet, a few Level3, Pacific Bell, some small ones, even MAE-East back in the day) and this is one of the rare teams that is able to get more than just two out of three on ratings of network knowledge, friendliness, and helpfulness.
In the end, I'm a bit reserved about putting such a glowing recommendation up because I don't want Francis to fill up his racks overnight. But at the same time, I'm really happy with the service and I'm looking forward to a long and successful relationship with them.
Co-Location / Dedicated hosting but it wouldn't work out as I didn't live close enough. Well I'm moving into boston (Wentworth) for college so now I'm looking at renting a Dedicated Server or a Co-Location spot and was wondering if anyone on here worked in boston at a data center or had any to recommend. I'm also looking to get sometype of internship / job at one as that's the field im studying at Wentworth.
I live in New England, Cambridge, Mass. I looked through many colocation offers and companies here in Boston but compared to NY/NJ area, where i have 1/2 colo, prices here are "insane" (hign). Paying 90$ for 1mbps compared to 13-17$ in NY/NJ is too high. So i searched for other options here in my area. 1-2-3 hour drive from me and found

I did try to contact them by email only yet, just to check if they are legit. No reply so far, after 7 days. I emailed 4 times from diff emails.
Will call them next week or so. I just think i need to give them time to celebrate Halloween and get drunk so they can do their job properly the rest of the year.. )) Did anybody hear anything about them? I did try the search box but it gives nothing back. I also tried google but no info about prices so far as well.
Anybody from Boston there to offer something good?
Here is what i get in NJ:
1/2 (23U) rack, power included, 10mbps (95%), IP: 2x C classes + 32 IP. I pay 775$ for that.
I'm considering moving into the Marley Group data center at One Summer Street in downtown Boston. I'm looking for customer reviews. Their sales response has been terrible. They take forever to respond. I've heard that their operations response is very good.
I am leaving waveform.net and am currently looking for a 1u colo around Boston.
The server is for email and a few personal websites. I don't have the exact bandwidth requirement because 1. no actual bandwidth usage was stated in my monthly invoice, and 2. my server is down right now, so I can't extract any bandwidth data from it. My guesstimate is less than 50GB per month. I should have a better estimate when I get the server back from them. May be I should post this after that but I would like to give myself a head start in checking out the possibilities. (Server has been down for 2 weeks now and I really want it back up a.s.a.p)
The requirements are very simple:
1. Around Boston (or within reasonable driving distance).
2. Easy access to the server (need not be 24/7, only need to do this if there is hardware issue).
3. If possible, serial console access.
4. And (of course) reasonable pricing.
Currently, I am inclined towards netriplex, but am open to other suggestions.
For this kind of "small fly" colo, is it advisible to give quotecolo a try?
What webhosting/domain/server company has the best customer area - ie. the best control panel, billing interface, integration with 3rd party scripts and control panels etc etc.
I think Mediatemple has done a good job, mosso's is excellent and I like what softlayer has done with their server management interface... Anyone else?
Does anyone know any good colocations that are good for gaming? I've been searching for some but couldn't find any. I'm interested in places like San Jose, San Francisco, or Fremont.
Any suggestions / positive experiences? The 1st preference would be Maryland side (all way up to Frederick) but the whole area is definitely of interest.
1-2 1U boxes or maybe a 4U with initially minimal bandwith reqs and high regard to cost effectiveness
I want to create a "Client" only area that a user will have to supply a User-id and Password to gain access to and to ALL of the web pages within it. If a user does not have a User-id and Password, I want them to be able to Register for one, and if they are a "Client", then I will Activate their access.
My question is: Can someone recommend either a Free or low cost script that will allow me to do this. I would want the script to have an "Admin" function to Activate a user request, Cancel a Users access. I would also want a "User" function that would allow the user to change some of the registration data (Password, Email). I would prefer that the script is PHP.
Im trying to install an ssl purchased from godaddy for my client area using whm on my dedicated box

but keep getting an error:
"Sorry, you must have a dedicated ip to use this feature for the user: mydomain! If you are intending to install a shared certificate you must use the username "nobody" for security and bandwidth reporting reasons"
well its a dedicated box and i do have a dedicated ip of course
I'm specifically looking for a server in the European area since I am from South Africa.
The reason being they will be more or less in the same timezone as I am and they also generally provide the fastest ping times (220ms to a server in Europe as opposed to 350ms to a server in USA).
I will be using the server as our own hosting space and hopefully be able to rent a monthly license for Parallels Plesk so that I may be able to resell hosting space - this is the primary reason for the dedicated server. I would like to know whether getting at least a quad core for this setup is essential or if I can get away with a dual core (in the case of hosting say 50 - 100 different websites).
So far I have been looking at keyweb.de which has a dual-core setup at 79euro installation fee and 49euro monthly fee. Their quad-core setup is 99euro installation and 59euro monthly. One drawback is it seems that they don't install Ubuntu linux (which is the OS i'm after). Another one is that their website isn't very intuitive - I cannot see whether it is possible to bundle Plesk with my order. I do however like the fact that they generally allow torrents.
A client wants to FTP some files to my server but I don't want him to see/have access to all the other stuff on the server. Is there a way that I can 'corden-off' an area for him to FTP stuff to? A password protected area perhaps?
Do you know anyone offering co-location in this CRG West datacenter? I understand that it just opened recently. I am only 3 miles away from this location.
It lists Simpli.biz here but I thought they are in Market Post Tower?

My requirement is for a 1U or 2U server with 1Mbps.
