I'm currently colocated in 365 Main in San Francisco.
Due to power limitations there I need a new place with 1-2 cabinets, about 25Amps and 1-2mbps committed.
I'm looking for a long-term, reliable, 24x7 NOC, with no surprises. If my servers are down, I'm out of business, so uptime (power+network) is the most important factor.
I will summarize the recommendations I get and post them back here.
Here are my requirements:
A. Space: 1/2 a secured cabinet
B. Location : Bay area
C. Power: 8 amps
D. B/w: 1 Mbps
I got quotes from

I am wondering who can give me 1/2 a secured cabinet for around $300 to $400

View 14 Replies View RelatedWe're currently with Rackspace with three dedicated boxes from them that we got several years ago. Rackspace has been a relativly good service for us up until last year.
Basically, the people before me were content with letting the servers sit there as they were loaded up more and more with virtual domains, more spam trap e-mail accounts and so on. Anyone who's been fourth in line will know the feeling.
Anyway, now that I am here, there are a lot of things that I'm finding we're paying Rackspace for that I could manage better on my own "if".
So, to cut costs, improve performance (we're still paying a premium price for machines that I've begun retiring from desktop usage) and generally give the webmaster more toys to tinker with, we've been discussing colocation of our own machines.
I've spoken to a LOT of people, having submitted Colotraq requests, googled, lurked on this forum (I've been a member for years, several times, actually) and discussed with friends and colleagues over IRC.
That said, I'm not finding a lot of "good options". Perhaps I'm a little biased, I've found a single host with just about everything I want, but due to a directive from my CEO, we can't use them.
Here I'll plug someone. One of the most attentive people I've ever met has been Dallas Kincaid of Xecu.net in Frederick MD. This man jumped through hoops to provide me information about his services, offered darn good rates and is generally a great person to deal with. The problem with using them is that one of our direct competitors, someone we've just ended years of litigation with, colocates with Xecu.net and I was barred from pursuing them as an option.
Anyway, here's what I require.
We currently run RHEL 2.1 AS, which needs being replaced, but as is the case in corporate settings, this has to be done gradually, without disturbing the delicate customers. On that system we've also got a slew of proprietary application that we're not willing to replace out right, but we plan to phase out over time in favor of Free Software offerings (some written in house).
I plan on running some kind of virtualization (not certain which yet, as there are pros for each) to keep these legacy systems in place while migrating our clients over as possible. Because I'm not sure what our needs in a year might be, we may deploy more VM's on the same physical machines.
A coloprovider with reasonable and abundant IP address policy and a TOS that allows virtual servers is a MUST.
One of our requirements is that the facility is in the general DC/Dulles area so that I may get to the server from my home or from work easily.
We also plan to utilize a dedicated firewall, a dedicated spam filtering appliance and a storage server. I have no problem paying for unused space if the price is reasonable, so colo providers selling 1/4 and 1/2 racks are fine even though we won't use it all.
Rackspace doesn't monitor 95th percentile bandwidth, so I'm not sure what I'd need if 95th percentile was used. However, the average monthly (combined) volume from our servers now is between 280 and 375 GB.
Does anybody here have experience with a provider they KNOW would meet my needs, so that I can compare pricing? If you've got kudos or horror stories, I'd like to hear those as well. I'm willing to overlook a reasonable price difference for good service, follow through or expertise.
I've been looking to colo a couple servers (total of 3U and 10mbit commit) in the San Jose/San Francisco area and calling around I'm getting quotes of around $1500. These quotes seem ridiculous to me--in pretty much every other market I am used to paying a little over a tenth of that--but sales guys just stand firm and say they are impacted.
Where can I find shared colo for reasonable prices in the San Jose/San Francisco area?
I don't think my requirements are really that out there--I need a mix of level3 and something else other than cogent.
Does such a thing exist? I just need to host a single machine or something.

View 0 Replies View RelatedJust wanted to get some opinions. I assume you are trying to colo, and you will fill 1/2 rack in 1 year. I have two options:
1. Get 1/2 rack, 20amps first and get another one when full.
2. Get full rack, 20amps and add 20amps later.
The first one will save $250/mo. The second one will give you redundancy and privately your rack/cabinet.
I would like a recommendation on a west coast colo provider.

We just got a great deal on a Gig circuit to PAIX, but the carrier doesn't have space available.

I currently use a half cabinet and think I'm paying way too much. I pay $1,000/month for half rack (10 meg bandwidth) 20 amps power, etc. Service and connectivity has been great (Ashburn, VA data center) but I think it's just over priced.
What should I pay for half cab, 20 amps, 5-10 MEG bandwidth, 20 amps?
On that note, what if I was to go for a full cabinet solution, same power and bandwidth, what is ultimately the expected price for a reputable colo provider?
I use APC Netshelter cabinets now; I have a need for some cabinets with 23-inch wide rails, capable of holding telco muxes, rectifiers, batteries, etc. Any suggestions on cabinet?
Something that would blend in with APC Netshelters (black, bowed/curved door on cold aisle) would be nice. I know I've seen a cabinet very similar to Netshelter delivered from NetApp, but with a grey/off-black color, and 1-piece door on the hot aisle. If APC is just sourcing their cabinets from some manufacturer who takes engineering requests, it would be great to find out who makes them.
I'm planning to move my co-located server to a cabinet soon. We are adding dedicated web & database servers to take the load off of the main box. I will get one GigE drop in this cabinet, so obviously I need a switch.
No routing is needed on my end, so my guess is that the regular GigE switch would do just fine. But I have few concerns about my setup.
All of my servers have dual GigE port. My plan is to connect one to the internet, and another to a local private lan for SMB, database, SNMP, and such. Jumbo frame is enabled on a private lan.
Is there any 16-port switch that allows me to assign 8 ports into one virtual switch (1500-byte frame) and another 8 into another virtual switch (9000-byte frame) ?
On the internet side, I expect to be pushing around 300-400mbps, a bit higher on the private lan. I need a very stable switch that won't choke or crash at this rate.
I'd also like to be able to limit throughput on each port, and probably do port/ip filtering on this switch instead of iptables on each box. (Am I asking too much for a switch?)
If I colo a full cabinet with anyone like colo4dallas, calpop or any other random host:
Does it mean they give me a cabinet I can put my servers in

Do I have to bring my own Cabinet?
When looking at the 1U's, I have to search really long and hard trying to find a half-decent host. A lot of companies skimp on something when offering colo, and makes for a bad day when that particular service is needed.
On the other hand, I see a lot of colocation offers for great deals on Cabinets and half Cabinets. High, premium bandwidth, PLENTY of amps, top of the line support, etc. It would be tempting to go for these, except I only have a single unit server.
I was going to give up on finding a good colo, then I got an idea. What if I got together a few other people, we all pitched in for our slice of a cabinet, and bring the price well within reasonable limits for those of us with low demands?
Would it be too difficult to do something like this? If you run across this topic and are looking for colo, would you be willing to give this a shot?

I have been looking for a VPS on the east coast (near New York). I am looking to spend around $30, but I need 500GB or more of bandwidth. It would be very preferable for the host to allow IRC connections. I have found a couple hosts that fulfill both of these, but at the moment VPS Empire is looking the best. They allow IRC for an extra $2 a month, which is very reasonable.
I would like to see if you guys have any other recommendations or suggestions for me.
I have a small project that I am going to be doing for a client and I am in the need for a small linux (centos) vps, 128mb (would like to have a burstable amount too) ram.

Previously I was on an uncapped bandwidth provider but we had a lot of problems with them so I decided to find a new provider who charges bandwidth by mbps
I do not have mrtg installed or managed switches, but I may start with 10mbps.
But I'm just curious, what takes a full cabinet with more than 30 machines does the total bandwidth takes you.
Perhaps any colo provider here don't mind to share their stats.
Please give me the difference. Colo in carrier hotel, we can choose our preferred network provider, but should we do that if we cannot have our own tech in datacenter? How about the supporting service from carrier hotel? Just general question, cause I dont address exactly which facility.
And the second would be more expensive? Saying the same number of rack, amount of bandwidth... Who is providing IP addresses then?
I've been searching over the last few days for web hosts whose servers are located on the east coast of the USA, but haven't been able to find anything suitable.
I've searched on this forum, but either companies don't tend to post where their servers are locatd or my search criteria isn't working.
Either way, would anyone be able to recommend some east coast web hosts or just list some that you know of?
I searched the forums and can't seem to find the answer. I run 3 websites that are targeted to Arabs, mainly most of the user of the site are from Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Egypt.
Where would I find the best server to serve these countries? Servers in Saudi and Dubai are just outrageously expensive.

After two and a half years I am upgrading my server that hosts my CS server. Unfortunately, my host will not allow me to upgrade it and keep the special I got from them those years ago.
