High Density Rack/colocation (~10 KW/rack)

Dec 6, 2007

With all the high power servers/blade servers, the 40A (@ 110V) power limit is way too small. I am wondering if there is any colo space targeted for high density application, e.g. with 10 KW/cab limit for 60A @ 208V power drops. Does anybody know of such high density colocation space? East coast is preferred.

Another question, I'm using a small desktop switch which can fit behind one of my 14 inch deep 1u server. Would colos allow this of would I need to pay for another U for the switch?

Colocation Recommendation For Bay Area

Mar 25, 2008

my company is looking for a colo provider in the Bay Area. We have done some research and the final choice comes down to these 2 companies: internap and ethr.net.

Price wise, Internap is slightly more expensive on the bandwidth, setup cost and cabinet rental.

Could anyone provide some recommendation based on personal experience? Our service is live video streaming, therefore we are looking for good network with low latency and with a bandwidth of 100mbps.

Boston Area Colocation Experience

Nov 9, 2009

We are currently hosting a cabinet of servers in our office, looking at adding about another 3/4 of a cabinet worth of servers in a next couple of months. The office is in the Boston area, and we currently are using Verizon for both the loop and bandwidth.

While this is working fairly well, we are starting to look at colo options. We would like to stay in the Boston area, but do not have much experience with the local options.

We have two main questions:

1) What data centers are considered good in Boston?

2) Is it worthwhile to consider resellers once you exceed a full cabinet?

Half Rack Colocation Plan

Aug 31, 2009

Recently i visited a Colo locally where i was given a strange pricing structure which i m confused about.

Half Rack
15 Amps
XXX Bandwidth
$600

Full Rack
20 Amps
XXX Bandwidth
$1500

Now here's the confusion when i fill up half rack it only comes to 6 to 7 servers, anything above that i m being charged per server which is $100. So here i feel i m paying just for power left aside rack and bandwidth. So purchasing 2 half racks seems more efficient.

P.S bandwidth is same on each server by the GB and not mbps or gbps.

Philadelphia Colocation For 1/2 Rack (or Less) At 401 N. Broad

May 29, 2008

I am shopping around for colocation options in Philly, preferable at 401 N. broad because that would be extremely convenient for me. I have read everything on this forum about Philadelphia colocation. I am having a hard time finding 1/2 rack or less. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or other advice. Ideally I would like to have keys to the partial rack, but I know that’s asking a lot. I have contacted several companies. Here is a breakdown:

Called Broadview / ATX. The lady that answered had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for info on "colocation". She transferred me to someone’s voicemail. I called back a few days later and finally got through to a salesperson. He seemed annoyed that I was even bothering him with less than a rack, but told me that they have 1/2 racks for $475 (with 2 year agreement) plus $120/month for 1.5/megabits.

Called Switch & Data and left a voicemail. Never heard back. I am assuming they don’t do partial rack.

Called Cross Connect Solutions. Talked to a guy but he explained they don’t do partial racks and that a full rack is "around $1000 / month" depending on bandwidth, etc.. He then gave me the name of a guy from philpop.com, and said he could probably help me.

Called the guy from philpop.com, he said he would "see what he could do"?

I talked to Matt from razorservers, that’s a definite possibility.

I looked at burst.net prices and that’s also a possibility.

Emailed quonix.com to get prices.

SoftLayer Washington DC

Sep 12, 2008

I signed up for SoftLayer again finally today. But my luck with them doesn't seem good.

I opted for Washington since it seemed a good contrasting location to the servers in texas.

I'm trying to rsync-over about 700GB of data from 2 servers located in Houston TX, ThePlanet.

My SoftLayer server has a 100mbps port, same with the source servers.

It's been at least 6-7 hours since I started the rsync commands. But since then it has only transferred a measly 35GB. Perhaps I'm not doing the maths so great here, but isn't this quite a poor transfer rate?

I wondered if any of you have a server at Washington SL, and had any similar problems with transfer speed in general. Should I have gone for Seattle instead?

Client Area Login Script

Aug 5, 2009

I want to create a "Client" only area that a user will have to supply a User-id and Password to gain access to and to ALL of the web pages within it. If a user does not have a User-id and Password, I want them to be able to Register for one, and if they are a "Client", then I will Activate their access.

My question is: Can someone recommend either a Free or low cost script that will allow me to do this. I would want the script to have an "Admin" function to Activate a user request, Cancel a Users access. I would also want a "User" function that would allow the user to change some of the registration data (Password, Email). I would prefer that the script is PHP.

Dedicated Server In Europe Area

Oct 22, 2009

I'm specifically looking for a server in the European area since I am from South Africa.

The reason being they will be more or less in the same timezone as I am and they also generally provide the fastest ping times (220ms to a server in Europe as opposed to 350ms to a server in USA).

I will be using the server as our own hosting space and hopefully be able to rent a monthly license for Parallels Plesk so that I may be able to resell hosting space - this is the primary reason for the dedicated server. I would like to know whether getting at least a quad core for this setup is essential or if I can get away with a dual core (in the case of hosting say 50 - 100 different websites).

So far I have been looking at keyweb.de which has a dual-core setup at 79euro installation fee and 49euro monthly fee. Their quad-core setup is 99euro installation and 59euro monthly. One drawback is it seems that they don't install Ubuntu linux (which is the OS i'm after). Another one is that their website isn't very intuitive - I cannot see whether it is possible to bundle Plesk with my order. I do however like the fact that they generally allow torrents.

Local Area Network Configuration

Jul 20, 2007

I'm trying to build a second network to test an application. I have a Server with 2 network cards connected to 2 LANs (10.0.0.0) and (192.168.0.0)

the problem is that the computer on network 192.168.0.0 cannot reach the computer at network 10.0.0.0.

This is how the connection suppose to look like:

PC(10.0.0.113) <--> Server Eth0(10.0.0.115) Server Eth1(192.168.0.5) <--> PC(192.168.0.10)

This is how the config for both cards look like on the server.

ETH0

ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth0
HWADDR=00:0b:db:0c:b9:13
BOOTPROTO=none
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=10.0.0.115
GATEWAY=10.0.0.1

ETH1

ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
GATEWAY=10.0.0.1
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth1
HWADDR=00:80:ad:79:a6:e6
BOOTPROTO=none
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.0.5

What else I need to do or what do I need to change to allow 192.168.0.5 communicate with 10.0.0.113 and vice versa.
