I have had several accounts with Powweb for 5 years now and I thought I would write a brief review of them:
BEFORE
I originally went with Powweb 5 years ago based off of a referral from a friend. At the time, the “shared hosting environment” isn’t quite what it is today. For the first several years, I experienced trouble free hosting (for the most part) and truly felt as though I was “getting what I paid for.”
Powweb, back then, was a privately owned company based out of California ( I believe) and I usually got the impression that most of their employees truly cared about their customers and the quality of service they provided. What made them semi-unique at the time, was that they offered only a “one plan solution” (they didn’t offer multiple plan types) and the simplicity of their business model worked well for most.
Powweb was also unique in that they offered community forums which were pretty “open” and it truly allowed customers to discuss problems and issues with one another. A few years ago, they transitioned from private dedicated servers to a clustered environment and that did bring along some hard time, but they got it under control eventually. Overall, I was satisfied with the service.
NOW
A year or so ago Powweb was bought-out by Endurance. If you do not know anything about Endurance, they are a very large web-hosting company which has acquired several other large shared-hosts over the past few years.
Once Powweb was purchased by Endurance, the quality in service immediately decreased. Part of what Endurance does with most of their acquisitions is to assimilate them into their fold. This was a very shaky process and nearly everyone experience a large amount of downtime.
Additionally, Powweb is now plagued by horrible MySQL issues where the service is nearly completely useless. For the past year, Powweb has been either unable or unwilling to fix these issues. It can often take several minutes for even the most basic of queries to run. Any dynamic type of an application: forums, blogs, CMS, are usually rendered completely useless.
To make matters worse, Powweb continues to aggressively advertise these resource heavy applications and then ask for patience as they attempt to get their issues fixed. It has been about a year now, and still it is not resolved. Much of these issues come from the extreme overselling that Powweb does. Nearly every day, all websites (even static ones) come to a complete crawl.
Calling customer support is also a waste of your time. 95% of the time, you are met by a rude person who simply tells you “well, it seems to work for me” or that “we are aware of the problem” (at best). Opening support tickets is also usually not helpful. Tickets are often closed without any contact with the customer and it is very common for them to “give you the run-around.”
I have been told by support several times to keep an eye on the forums for updates on issues and whatnot. Then, if you go to the forums and attempt to get any information from there, you are told that ‘these are only user-helping user forums’ and that you can’t get any official help there, though customer support told you to go to that very place. Additionally, Powweb’s staff practices extreme censorship of the forum and it is common for negative remarks to be removed or posts completely deleted, many times without any acknowledgement of the act.
In addition to the MySQL issues, Powweb also experiences frequent “lock-ups,” CGI issues, email issues, dns issues, and so on and so forth. The list of problems that has occurred over the past year is literally too long to remember.
In conclusion, the Powweb of new is nothing like the Powweb of old. This new Powweb is controlled by an over-selling giant (Endurance) that is only concerned with the number of accounts as apposed to the quality of service. While certainly any business related site should not be in such an environment at all, I would even suggest that people looking for a host for hobby related purposes stay clear of powweb – it’s that bad.

Even though it is not mentioned anywhere on their web site, powweb billed me $8.77/mo instead of the advertised $7.77. I asked about this in their forum and that << removed >> Ian promptly deleted my post. Has anyone else heard about this?

Powweb's regular monthly charge is $7.77... Long term customers have been paying this for years, and it's still the price listed on their main page. It's even the price new customers will pay...
However, existing customer for some reason now have to pay the undocumented price of $8.77 a month.
Way to treat your existing customers! Charging them more for no reason other than they've been loyal!

I found out today that FatCow, Dot5 Hosting, PowWeb, and iPower Hosting are all part of the smae hosting conglomerate. The parent company is called Endurance International Group. It seems that the companies have gone out of their way to make their connections unpublished, which is very misleading to their customers. However, I recognized some similarities of their websites, and spoke with a representative over the phone who admitted that they were all connected. There are probably other companies too, but they wouldn't give out any more info.

I just registered a .info domain with GoDaddy for $0.99, and have the nameservers set up for Powweb, and my htaccess also setup; however, going to "mysite.info" works, but typing "www.mysite.info" does not work. I do not have this issue with any other of my domains. Any ideas?

Anyone here used Midphase? Over at WHT you can find as many negatives as positives for almost anyone you chose. Anyone at Sitepoint used them? I'm very cautious about switching and have checked into several web hosts. I would stick with the one I have now, but server load spikes seem to come at the worst times and stay around for hours.

My quesiton is, if they host in the softlayer datacenter i can assume pretty solid uptime and bandwith / DL speed?

I just got the mail from midphase stated that they will not allow bandwidth pooling anymore. And it is effect immediately. Exactly from email:
Dear Dedicated Customers,
Due to the popularity of our dedicated program we are no longer able to offer bandwidth pooling between servers. We regret any inconvenience this causes but we do have some helpful solutions for your bandwith needs.
This month all overages above the allotted 10 Terabytes per server will be billed at .20 cents per Gigabyte over.
Next month in order to receive this price you will need to purchase bandwidth packages in advance. Please simply let us know how much additional bandwidth you would like to purchase for the upcoming month and we will add that bandwidth to your account at the same .20 cent price. This service will renew with your account addons and will be a monthly fee. All overages above your pre-purchased allotment will then be billed at .50 cents per Gigabyte. We will notify you in advance of any overages as well so please feel free to add more bandwidth to your account at any time by emailing billing@midphase.com. If you find that you're no longer using as much bandwidth you can also cancel these addons by emailing billing@midphase.com.
This will result me paying alot for overuseage as i have 2 servers from them. And i am using bandwidth mainly on 1 server. ( more than 10TB for this month already.
I also emailed them 2days ago that i need at least 30 days notice but the did not reply.

Am considering Midphase's VPS as an upgrade from shared and after searching the net am fairly comfortable with them at this point. However, knowing that most happy/content customers usually don't think about writing a review and the dissatisfied ones sometimes do...I'm posting this question not as an opportunity to bash but to be informative.
Keeping that in mind, my specs are as follows:
1) Run 3 Wordpress blogs (one of which is picking up steam fairly fast)
2) Have 2 static sites that may see increased traffic. (At this point they do not but one is an offshoot of the blog with the most traffic so this may change)
3) Have a SMF forum setup for family that is fairly active.
4) I like to try out various scripts for review.
I'm looking for any feedback from current Midphase VPS customers or past ones. Like I said, this is not an invitation to bash them. That can be done somewhere else. I'm looking for those with experience with their company's VPS hosting.
I am presently a shared hosting customer with them on their Linux plan and would prefer to keep with Linux over windoze.

I only have headaches with this host.
My site has been down several times.
I wanted to add a add-on domain to my account but I received a park-wrap-error. I submitted 2 tickets and called in multiple times but this has not been fixed.. for OVER 2 WEEKS now.
Now the most recent insult. They moved my site to another server.. without telling me and lost my files that I uploaded the other day. I called in to ask about this but the service tech hung up on me. He told me "If this happens again please submit a support ticket" without even listening to my question or concerns.
DO NOT Host with Midphase!

OK, after investigating nearly 30 hosts over the last month we're in the final...
Telephone support was essential for me and both hosts have answered the phone instantly ever time I've rang them, no matter what time of day.
Both have packages with multiple-domain hosting.
Both have generally positive reviews in this and other forums and also on other review sites.
LunarPages has rave reviews like no other host in this category, but their price is significantly more for the multiple domain package:
Lunarpages: $25.50 - 4 GB storage - 200 GB bandwith
Midphase: $12 - 7 GB storage - 'Unlimited' bandwith
Both include a free domain.
Storage/bandwith llimits don't mean much to me because I know I will not fill them.
Was wondering what other people's experiences had been with these two hosts please?

I recently left Midphase after deciding I couldn't live with being charged extra for AWstats (not just per domain but $2 per month for subdomains also!!!)
I foolishly took advantage of their free domain when I signed up and am now having incredible difficulty getting it transferred as per the terms of their agreement after 12 months.
I have been trying now for 4 weeks. I won't bore you with the saga of events getting as far as a release key prior to the 4 weeks but since then I have submitted the transfer request via 123-Reg 4 times and each time it has timed out because Midphase won't respond with confirmation within 5 days.
I have spent the last 24 hours with numerous emails telling me they can't talk to me unless I submit a ticket which I can't do because they insist the account is closed prior to transfer. Finally I get enough information to them to satisfy their security concerns and they resend the key I already have.
When I reply I have it already, I simply want them to confirm the transfer when asked, I get this back.
"This request will be confirm automatically. But you need wait some time."
I have asked how long is 'some time' but no reply.
edit: I got a reply.
"Usually, we don't confirm these requests. These operations perform automatically. So, may be you made some a mistakes when fill your request."

I've been with Midphase for 4-5 years on the shared server. Have the Pro Plan.
The speeds got a lot worst. This whole last week our site has been up and down, ukrsoccer.com.
I've contacted them, they said everything is fine. I asked if they can do anything and they keep telling me that everything is fine. Our visitors keep telling me that the site is to slow to use.
I'm thinking of switching, didn't want to do it with 6 domains but the service has gone to **** over the last few years.
Any decent services out there? Looking for a server for under $200 a year, but with very good speeds.

I have been hosting with An hosting / Midphase for almost 5 months. I am really disappointed with service quality. Here is my honest review:
My Background
* Four years hosting experience with other hosting companies
* 9 years experience as consultant in IT
* I have almost 200 websites and have 3-8 employees working for my websites in the last 6 months.
* I generally keep the websites in shared hosting accounts to minimize downtime.
Account:
I signed up for cheap hosting around thanksgiving time last year. It is something like 4.95 or 5.95 USD per month. I have 40 subaccounts (domains) an huge amount of disk and bandwidth. I just use 2-3% of available resources (disk and bandwidth).
Review
I am very disappointed with the service at midphase. Here are the details:
Technical Support:
First two months were fine. Once midphase was acquired by another hosting firm located in Europe, service quality declined rapidly. Support requests were addressed in 4-5 hours in the first two months. Later, they started to respond slowly.
Most of the time, I felt that my tickets are never read. It was like a robot responding my emails. Answers were generic and has nothing to do with my questions.
The second issue is that they seem to have lost customer touch. I remember telling customer service representative that my website is not showing up at all. I am told that it is OK. I pinged my website from 9 different computers. None of them showed that it is accessible. It is really frustrating to get an email like "Please check it again and if you have a problem still please run the following command ..."
Overselling
I checked the websites on the server where my shared hosting account is. There are almost 350 websites. It is reasonable.
Bad Neighborhood effect
The strange thing is that some of the websites are spamy on the server. I am pretty good at Search Engine Optimization. All I can tell you is that my two websites were heavily punished by google due to bad neighborhood effect. I asked Midphase to change my server. I got nothing.
First site was getting 3000-3500 uniques per day before switching to anhosting. Number of visitors were almost the same in the first 3 days. On the fourth day, it dropped to 400/day. Whatever I do, it never bounced back. Number of indexed pages on website were almost 4000. Now it is just 930. It is unique content. It is an established website for three years, I can't be sandboxed. Anyway, I gave up building that site.
I decided not to host any websites on anhosting even though I paid 1 years' price as there is no point in getting pissed off by bad neighborhood effect.
One employee just placed a newly developed website on hosting without my consent. Here is the result. Website was PR2. It dropped to 0 in 6 weeks. Number of visitors dropped by 74%. I decided to abondon that domain.
FTP
Worst service... After I decided to completely abondon an hosting even though it is paid for a year, I just used it for FTP.
In fact, failure of FTP is the main reason I am writing this review. I just get the following error. "Disk full -please upload later".
This is the first time in my lifetime I get "full disk" error from a shared hosting provider. It is very likely to be the only one in my life.
Uptime
host-tracker.com is the service I use to check server uptime. Here are the stats for the week of 2008-02-18.
Weekly uptime:71.86% Downtime:1 day(s) 23 hour(s)
Day 2008-02-24 Uptime:98.53% Downtime:21 min(s) 10 sec(s)
Day 2008-02-23 Uptime:100.00%
Day 2008-02-22 Uptime:100.00%
Day 2008-02-21 Uptime:97.48% Downtime:36 min(s) 14 sec(s)
Day 2008-02-20 Uptime:59.48% Downtime:9 hour(s) 21 min(s)
Day 2008-02-19 Uptime:6.27% Downtime:22 hour(s) 29 min(s)
Day 2008-02-18 Uptime:40.79% Downtime:14 hour(s) 12 min(s)
This is simply unacceptable. Those stats are for the first website I abandoned at anhosting.
Support Tickets
Once I got so mad and told them that I am going to leave a negative review at webhostingtalk.com. I am told that it is OK. I was busy and decided to keep quite to discipline them.
2 months later, I now have ftp problem. I decided to mention spesific issues happened two months ago. Guess what??? The ticket that I threaten to leave a negative feedback was removed without my consent. This is insane.
Network
I remember that their network engineers messed up with routers once. Anyway, they fixed it in few hours.
Conclusion
I have been living in US for 5 years. An hosting is the worst service company I have ever interacted in this country.
If I am given a chance to get the money back for the remaining 6 months in my contract, I won't hesitate for a minute to get the money back.
I recommend staying away from anhosting or midphase. It is just waste of money, time and other resources.

Intel Quad-Core Xeon 2.50GHz
2x250gb
2gb
100mbit
10TB bandwidth
$280
That price is pretty competitive, especially for 10tb dedicated bandwidth.
I was wondering if anyone has any servers with them? What's it been like?
Would be interesting to know since their main business line is just shared hosting.

Did some quick research and it seems as though MidPhase and SIngleHop share office space, and the MidPhase network is what SIngleHop appears to run on.
Am I wrong on either of these? Because SingleHop's network, at least from here, is quite fast.
My question is whether MidPhase.com stuff gets hosted in SingleHop's DC or is it in SoftLayer's DCs? Both are great, but SL isn't in Chicago...and SIngleHop is.
If MidPhase shared/dedi/PS isn't in SingleHop's DC, what's a good host for shared/VPS that is? Yes, SoftLayer is awesome, especially with ~25 ms pings from here bd. 35 to SingleHop...but just researching here...

I have a server with midphase but need to know who to blame or what the cause is.
I keep getting Network timeout and or connection reset issues. Midphase keep saying everything is fine but alertra says the site takes 15-30seconds load from around the world.
Is this a server or network issue?
Nothing is changed on the server and the load, memory and cpu is low.
I had cliffsupport look at this and they said its fine, and midphase keep insisting the server is fine. Would this be a network issue being the line is oversold or something?
