TAR Backup - Debian

May 31, 2009

I want to backup a entire folder thats in / not in any other folders.

I've tried this command but I get the error described below..

tar cvpzf opensim.tgz

tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive
Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information.

The folder is called opensim. I was logged into SSH with root access and tried the command directly, not going into other folders because well I dont want to, I wanna backup that 1st opensim folder that I can see on the FTP also.

Auto Backup A Folder

May 24, 2007

I have all my computers hooked up to a server running Ubuntu Linux. I want to make it so that at say, 5 AM every morning, the computer checks for changes to a specific folder..and if there are, automatically transfer the files to the server.

This way, if anyone on my network needs something backed up they just put it in that folder and it will auto backup just in case.

Is there anyway to do this? Software?

Advantage Debian 64 Versus Regular Debian

Oct 9, 2008

I just ordered a server which has that setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core
8MB RAM
2x750GB RAID 1 HD

Now I wanna run it with DirectAdmin, but obviously DirectAdmin doesn´t support the Debian 64 which is installed but only 32 bit Debian.

Now I wonder wether I could setup a Debian 32 as well on that system and if yes, wether it would give me a deficit in Performance?

Or would you rather go with CentOS 64 which Directadmin supports?

I've also got a reseller account on a helm server.

What I want to do is: if I have a problem with the office server (outage) all emails will be routed to the helm server then delivered back to the office server once available. So any incoming email wont be bounced/lost.

Nameservers In VPS - Domain In Godaddy - Backup - How To Setup?

Aug 2, 2009

I just got a VPS plan for the first time where I want to host several new websites. In the past I've used individual accounts to host a couple of other websites and haven't paid much attention to nameserver setup, just configured at my registrar whatever I was given from the hosting service.

So, I got a brand new domain to act as the host of the rest of the domains I'm setting up: www.example.com.

In the VPS I have setup this one as the default domain for nameservers: ns1.example.com
ns2.example.com

Question 1:
- Can I setup ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com as the nameserververs for www.example.com ? i.e. nameserver is used for the same domain in which it is named. Even if this is possible, is it a good idea or would it be better to host it somewhere else? When I try to define those as the nameservers in Godaddy I get the error message Nameserver not registered. What am I missing?

Other DNS questions
Question 2:
- If I host my nameservers in my VPS, I will need a separate IP for each one (ns1, ns2...and so on). Can I still use those IP's to actually host websites, or do I need additional IP's to host the actual sites? Any value in keeping each IP dedicated to a nameserver?

For example:
IP#1 = used for ns1
IP#2 = used for ns2
IP#1 = used for website 1
IP#2 = used for website 2

Question 3:
- Are DNS backup services valuable if I host my own nameservers? Any suggestions on good quality providers? Price not an issue.

Question 4:
- If I used DNS backup services for example.com will that apply to ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com which I used for my VPS? and therefore will be applicable to other domains I host? Does this make sense? Or would I need a separate backup for each domain I host? Can I use one backup for multiple domains?

Question 5:
- What are the drawbacks of hosting multiple sites under the same IP? I control all sites under these IPs

Question 6:
- Can somebody recommend a good resource to learn how IP, DNS, nameservers, etc work? Any book, paid website, video... anything ? While there's a ton of info on the web, all is scattered and none seems to be too detailed enough for somebody starting to learn about this.

Multi Server Setup For DB Backup Performance

Jan 8, 2009

I am working on a busy and popular website which has a large amount of database activity - and requires hourly backups of all database data.

At the moment the site is hosted on two servers - one for the front end web server, one for the database.

Both servers are running a RAID HDD system which allows quick swaps of faulty HDDs without data loss.
An hourly full backup of database tables is running which is killing the server when it runs.

ISP has suggested installing a third server to run as a slave to the existing DB server, and hence always hold a duplicated of the live database.

I have a feeling however that this is basically just like having RAID mirroring, but on a different machine - so to solve the problem of a potential dodgy SQL statement wiping out ALL copies of the live database, we'd STILL need hourly backups to run, and hence would still see the major system speed drop each hour at the time of backup.

Make A Backup Of My Cast-Control Setup

to make a backup of my Cast-Control setup
and accounts, so I can install on a new server.

According to the Support website:
[url]

Its should be easy , using a SSH connection to backup,
but when I try the command:

tar -cvvf castcontrol.files.tar /home/MyDomain/public_html/myCast/

I get invalid directory!

I have notice that there´s no myCast folder inside my server,
on that directory there´s only the "castcontrol" folder.
I have tried with that, but same error!

Even not using any domain, just
/home/public_html/castcontrol/

Server Move - Is There A Way To Setup DNS To Show A Backup Site / Message

Jun 25, 2009

The data centre which I use, is moving all collacated servers to a brand new data centre next week, which will mean a two hour downtime for each of my servers and customer websites.

At the moment my servers utilise two nameservers on seperate servers and when the move happens all websites will be offline with an ugly error message to any visitors.

Does anyone know a good way to setup a page which would be displayed if the web server was down? I am using MS DNS.

My thoughts so far is

1. Setup a 3rd nameserver which is off site from the data centre.

2. Purcahse web hosting / vps for a month on a seperate hosting company

3. Set it up so that it accepts * to a specific IP address in IIS or apache

4. I create an index.php script which gets the host header value sent i.e. [url]and the page then displays a nice maintenace i.e

"We are sorry joeblogs.com is currently down for maintenace, we will be back online shortly".

I think my main question is do I need to setup a 2nd www record in DNS for each site and how do I ensure the 2nd dns (backup record) only gets used when the first website / server is down.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Setup Backup Manager To Store Backups

Sep 29, 2014

I've been running a Plesk server with around 100 domains for years and years now. I've always used a backup service provided by the server vendor, but with a new server, I wanted to consider some of the backup options built into Plesk.

1. It looks like Plesk/Acronis is dead or only for Windows. Is that right?

2. If I add a backup drive to the server, can I setup Plesk Backup Manager to store the backups there (instead of on the main RAID array)?

3. Are there any other 3rd party extensions that I should consider?

Do Exchange Auto-responders Reply To Auto-responders

Mar 30, 2009

I have an address that receives hundreds and hundreds of e-mails a day. It's an address people aren't supposed to use (basically noreply@mydomain.com), but people do. I'd like to stop being the guy that gets these and routes them as appropriate, but we can't just turn it off and cause a hard bounce, because that will bewilder too many people who don't get that replying to noreply@mydomain.com is a bad idea. (Our website sends out notifications to people. A lot of people reply for various strange reasons, and we also get a lot of autoresponders sending us junk.)

I'm a Linux admin, so I'm a bit out of my league -- this needs to be configured on our Exchange box.

What I'd really like is an auto-responder for this address that will tell people that they e-mailed a mailbox that no one uses, and give them directions on how to contact a real person if need be.

However, fully half of the e-mails we receive are people's auto-responders. Is an Exchange auto-responder going to reply to their auto-responder? This will completely bewilder people.

And if this will auto-respond to auto-responders, is there a cleaner solution here? Again, it's got to be Exchange, but I'm a Postfix guy, so I have very little experience here.

Dedicated Or Reseller Setup With Virtualization Or Decent Chroot Setup

Jul 31, 2008

As my clients' needs expand, they're asking for chroot ssh/sftp setup. I'm currently on a dedicated Linux setup but don't really have the time to set up a whole new box with full virtualization or investigate a full chroot solution (baby on the way), and to be honest it would be less hassle to move to a new provider than worry about down time with sites.

What I'm looking for:

- linux hosting
- hosting for 30+ accounts, some with several domains
- at least 6 IP addresses for SSL certs
- each account in a full chroot environment (ssh/sftp/ftp) so they can't poke around each others' files, or each account set up in a virtual machine setup (ie: openvz)
- maildir
- spamassassin
- php 5, mysql, perl 5.8.8
- suexec apache would be nice

Install Required software

NX server needs ssh and some libraries to run. These packages are normally not installed during the basic installation process.Use the following comamnd to install

#aptitude libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 ssh

Install Free NX Server in Debian Etch

First you need to download the .deb packages using the follwoing commands
i did the three steps..

Now you need to install .deb packages in the following order this is very important

#dpkg -i nxclient_2.1.0-17_i386.deb

#dpkg -i nxnode_2.1.0-22_i386.deb

#dpkg -i nxserver_2.1.0-22_i386.deb

If you get any errors use the following comamnd to fix

#apt-get -f install

Now you need to make sure ssh and nx servers are running if not start with the following commands

#/etc/init.d/ssh start

#/etc/init.d/nxserver start
--------------------
but the problem is i cannot connect to the nx .
i installed the program on windows but what is the username and password should i use? i tried to use the root but it said that the user root cannot be used.

Ubuntu Server Or Debian

Jul 9, 2008

I've just ordered a dedicated server with Ubuntu server, but they've come back to me to say that they've had trouble installing Ubuntu server on these particular servers.

As an alternative, they're offering to install Debian. My concern is that I come from a windows background and have spent the last month reading and playing with Ubuntu Server in vmware. I'll be running a small handful of sites on the server and will rely on the apt-get and package installer in webmin to get things set up and for administration. I'll dabble in the shell a little, but only when needed.

Should I go with a different host that can offer Ubuntu, or will I be okay with Debian?
