View 12 RepliesI have read many on this forum express that people should avoid providers offering unlimited space and transfer.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHostGator has a "SWAMP" package with unlimited bandwidth for $15/m. I find this hard to believe.
I wonder if they have some kind of a "within fair use" rule in their TOS?
Has anyone ever tried to use a huge amount of bandwidth on this package?
while looking for a host I've found that there are many hosts that offer unlimited web space and unlimited bandwidth for very little money like 4$ per month and there are also expensive web hosts that offer limited but big webspace and high bandwidth for much more money. What am I missing here? If a big website like yahoo decides to buy that 4$ per month host and move there, what would happen? Would the bandwidth really be enough and not slow down? If it wouldn't carry yahoo then why do they say it's unlimited? I'm confused because I've heard about people spending thousands of dollars for big websites every month.

I bought hosting with unlimited bandwidth, space, domain, etc. A few days ago I install script to sell photos. So I upload huge of photos and maybe eat their bandwidth and space. And today my account is deleted without any warning! I tried to ask this but no answer yet.
Is the Unlimited space and bandwidth is totally lying??? But why even hostgator selling the unlimited features?
There are many hosting service providers around the world. Many are advertising, Unlimited Bandwidth, Unlimited Disk storage .
I choose one of those company for one my hosting need. It is not much a big website but has some traffic. Also nothing to download or upload... all the content is text based. In one month hosting started to suck.. lots of downtime and database error from the hosting side.
End of the day, I was asking for a VPS solution. My God! they do not have any VPS or dedicated server solution at all.
Why the hosting companies just buildup their advertisement. And why should they offer what they cannot provide. And their strength I still see is.. they are still saying to me that they are hosting is Unlimited Bandwidth, Unlimited Disk storage.
Signed up with Dreamhost and my account was closed after two days (no warning). Was on track to push 1-2TB a month. They said my video blog was a "file dump"
Two questions:
1) How much bandwidth has anyone actually been able able to use with them (or any overseller) and how'd you do it?
2) How can you get what's advertised? Do VPS accounts let you use all your bandwidth? Could you list some hosts that will not find excuses to shut you down? I have no idea how much bandwidth is reasonable to expect with shared hosting
My Dreamhost account was jusjon4 if anyone from the company could let me recover my data that'd be great (I don't even want a refund)
I am having trouble working out which host to choose for a new project.
I usually opt for Webmania or Heart Internet - they are excellent providers but Webmania now applies a bandwidth cap that may be too low and Heart's cheapest package does not provide sub-domains. I can't be sure whether 12GB will be big enough for a site that will contain galleries of high-res images (I have no prior experience with caps and traffic predictions are impossible at this time) and to get sub-domains from Heart means a £90 per year package (too much).
Streamline is one of the few good-value providers that do not cap bandwidth, but I have concerns about the effect that this may have on server speed given that it is bound to attract the kind of sites that are really heavy on bandwidth. This point was mentioned in an article recently.
If I take the last option, will I be hampering the performance of my site?
I'am looking for a dedicated server located in USA and Canada (one in US and one in Canada) with unlimited or large (5-10TB) bandwidth on 100mbit port ....

is 10mbp enough for this server ( it contains about 200 website )?
an recommendation on a shared hosting reseller with unlimited bandwidth(or atleast about 1500gb) and about 60-70gb harddrive? And preferably have servers in the US and europe, so i can pick one in usa and 1 in europe.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Private Virtual Server and the package offered by different company are quite confusing.
I was on RackForce and their basis VPS package dds200-L can host 100 domain names on Plesk and unlimited domain names on WHM/Cpanel.
On 1and1 it didn't say if Plesk support 100 or unlimited domain names. My question is, do we always have the liberty to host unlimited domain names on our PVS?
Can anyone recommend a good VPS hosting company?
to upgrade to dedicated server with fasthosts, namely because the site is already hosted there.
can i install ssl certificates (i am looking to buy a thawte 128kb certificate) i know they have shared ssl, thats not what i am looking for.
is there a better host for around the same price (£50-70)
One of their servers was compromised, and as a result EVERY password for every customer's accounts must be changed including email, ftp, etc.
I am posting because as of Monday last week my database users in MYSQL were deleted and the Database owner account I have does not have priviledges to grant permissions to new users. As a result my website is now at a standstill and as I write I am at queue position 35 on the phone, starting at 39, 5 minutes ago....
All emails to them remain without a response and they have taken their own forums down.
This raises a good question at a good time as my site is not live yet. Fasthosts has always been quite reputable, and as such I believe this could happen to any hosting company...
How can I mitigate risks relating to my host when my site is live (without going down the dedicated server route as well)?
As I have a .co.uk and a .com for the same name should I split out the hosting to two seperate companies?
If you are looking for a host I would advise to think carefully about Fasthosts at this time.
I ordered a server from fasthosts.co.uk in May after speaking to their sales over the phone. Once I had worked out that it was something that we could try I said that’s fine I will order it online. NO NO I was told I can order it for you here and set everything up for you. Great... I gave the girl I think her name was Flik or Flic from fasthosts all my details and she set everything up in a few hours. GREAT
Now here is the bad part...
Tried to cancel the server and have been told that it's a minimum term of 12 month. I have also been charged since then another £79.00. Called my credit card company to try and stop the transactions for now as you can't delete the details on the fasthost control panel.
I have email support so many times and also spoken to them on the phone. I have tried to speak to other managers but they keep saying that there is no ones available to talk to.
My main post is I was not told that this was a minimum of 12 months and would have never agreed to this. I did check when you sign up online and they do place the T&C's deep in their small print. I now know why the girl from Fasthosts wanted to take the order over the phone.
Here is my letter I send to them. Next step is ofcom but if you have any ideas please let me know.
Dear Fast Hosts
I am writing to you in regards to a server that I ordered over the phone with one of your sales people in April. As I recall her name was Flick and her contact number is 01452 561831.
I ordered this server to use as a back up for some of our company files and discussed this with your sales staff. We agreed that getting a Windows server was the best option for what we needed and the server was ordered over the phone.
We were not too sure if the server was what we needed but we thought that we would give it a go and see.
After a week or so I released that we didn’t really need the server as we could use our public folders with the exchange email service that we have with you and if we ran out of space I could always buy some more.
I sent an email to you on 30th May requesting cancellation and received an email back 2 days later advising me that it was a minimum one year’s contact. I have since sent several emails to your support and sales explaining that I was never told that this was a year contact as I ordered on the phone. I was not even told the price.
It's simple... How can I agree to those terms and conditions when I was not made aware of them? I would have never agreed or signed up for a year's contract. I have not used this server and only wanted to try it out. When I ordered over the phone I was never told that it was for a year. Your calls must be recorded and you can check.
I am a consultant for a large mobile operators call centre in ******* and this is poor service.
Please cancel this server and review your sales policies as they are against trading standards.
I also notified you about the cancellation on 30th May and was charged for another month on 4th June. Please arrange a refund for that month to avoid charge back. I am happy to pay the first months payment.
I have other services with Fast Host that I have had for several years. We are a web company and do recommend Fasthosts for UK hosting as we have had a great experience with you in the past.
The credit can be applied to our exchange hosting account domain gsynetwork.com and I believe that the username is ********
Regards
This is the type of reply you get back…… What a joke……
Further to your mail ,
All of our servers are subject to a 12 month minimum term , part of using this server is the acceptance of the terms of service which we operate subject to the normal cooling off periods associated with purchasing products and services over the phone or online. As you have gone beyond this period I cannot authorise the removal of this machine from contract.
At 6pm last night - more than 28 hours ago - my Dedicated Fasthosts server went down.
It's still down.
Despite more than 15 phone calls and several emails, they seem utterly incapable of fixing the problem.
The system drive apparently failed and was replaced today with a new drive. I then rebuilt the Linux Fedora Core and Fasthosts proceeded to add the faulty drive to the server - at my request.
However, after confirming that the drives had been installed and that the server was ready for use, guess what?
It's still down.
So not only do I currently not have a website, but my developer cannot access the failed drive in order to see what can be recovered.
I'm at the point of telling Fasthosts to stick it, but I'm not going to do that because it's their responsibility to fix their hardware and provide the service I've been paying for since 2006.
That being the case, can anyone recommend what steps I should take next in order to hold Fasthosts to account.
I have recently closed my Linux Developer account with fasthosts due to intermittant latency problems, and rubbish support query turn around, always over 48hours if replied to at all (most of my support queries were never answered unless I actually phoned in about them!)
So is mine an isolated incident or are others out there having the same problem?
Wondered if anyone has managed to install SSL on fasthosts dedicated server?. I have bought an SSL certificate from goDaddy, but it just won't install. Fasthosts support is OK until you tell them that you're dedicated then they just say they can't help technical questions on that, but an engineer can help @ £60 per ½ hour. goDaddy tech support keep sending me the same instructions, and I've now tried 3 times & just not recognised
View 8 Replies View RelatedI ideally want to use Fasthosts as the hosting provider, on a shared hosting account. Are there any CMS's that install and work well in such an environment?
I dont need a CMS with bells and whistles, just one that is template driven, and has 'friendly' URLs.
I'm doing some work for a client, they have a linux developer package with Fasthosts for an existing website.

what I can't seem to work out from the Fasthosts website is whether I could register another domain with this package to save having to buy further hosting. Both websites are pretty small.
I have a small VPS with Serverways and to be honest I have had no problems with it for a week or so - suprising when you see the spec!
My question is - are there any other providers around the globe (looking for VPS servers all over the place) that would sell me a VPS with the following specs:
CPU 100MHZ
100 MB RAM
10GB SATA (Could probably do with less if needed)
No control panel
100GB Bandwidth on- 100mbps port.
4.90 USD

Went to go through Precision Effect's site earlier and noticed they're offering "Cloud" hosting?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been asked by a client to develop a solution that can offer subversion project hosting. Basically a user will signup for an account and be able to create different repositories and manage them and get RSS feeds for the commit actions n stuff...
Now i am thinking of using PHP for this but I am not sure how will I setup the server (webhost) .. should I recommend him to go with dedicated server? Since he wants to limit the space for each user how can that be done?
I just stumbled upon LiquidWeb offering SSD's, are they the first to do so?

My [new] host doesn't offer custom DNS records. Obviously, this upsets me somewhat as I need some custom DNS records (mainly A Records).
Would this be possible:
I've got a few servers with SoftLayer. If I pointed my domain to SoftLayer's nameservers and handled the DNS there, could I simply forward everything to their servers from SoftLayer's "Manage DNS" (such as www, mail, ftp, etc), then create the custom DNS myself? Would this work?
Hope that's clear enough to understand!
If not, is there another possible work-around? I need custom A Records!
How many companies have you come across that offer different dc location? Does it make their offer more attractive for their potential clients?
Marblehost.com offer you to choose between GB and USA location? Or am I misreading their post as it seems unbelievable...

Can any one recommend a good email hosting solution a bit like hivemail.com as after searching on google it looks like they have died. I did like the features of hivemail so if there is anything similar then please recommend I will continue my search and let you know what I have found ifI find anything.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of forming a web development business and am currently interested in learning the various methods of offering 3rd party services and accounts. How to offer hosting is my current dilemma; I can of course refer the client to a host and receive a referral kick-back, but the idea of reselling hosting accounts is also appealing, though I have no knowledge currently as to how this works, and I'm basically just curious how other's manage this aspect of the business. I do not mind offering customer service on hosting accounts, so this is not an issue
