Load Balancing For A Web Site

Jun 12, 2006

I have a growing website that needs to move from its current single-server setup to using a cluster of servers to deliver its dynamic pages.

My current host does not support load balancing among its servers, so I'm left to configure that on my own. Round-rovin DNS doesn't work for me as I'll need certain http requests to always go to the central server (the one with the master database).

My distro is Redhat 9, and I only access the server remotely through SSH. I'm using Apache 2 (and PHP and Mysql).

Any ideas on the simplest way to do this?

I've read a bit about LVS (http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/) but it seems to require a kernel recompile, which is way beyond the things I would dare to try...

Site Won't Load Based On IP Address

Apr 19, 2008

I recently put up a website and after about a week, I suddenly can not access it. The site went down after the host had a problem with the http on the server and it never came back for me but it works for everyone else. It times out while trying to connect in both the web browser and FTP client. The problem appears to be related to my internet connection, because the site won't load on any computer that is using my internet. When I disconnect from my cable and use my cellphone as a modem, the site works fine. The site works for everyone else that has tried though.

Besides changing my IP address, how do I go about getting the site to work?

Server Load Is Low But Site Is VERY Slow

Jul 1, 2007

My machine is pretty good. Here are the specs:

Intel Xeon-Woodcrest 5148-DualCore
3 gigs of ram
250GB Western Digital WD Cavia

I run a forum with a modest amount of traffic along with a content management system handling the other sections of the website. I'm pretty sure the forum isn't the problem though.

The server load for this machine is almost never above a 1. Right now as I type this the load is at 0.17, but it's unbearably slow! Taking up to 16 seconds to load a single page.

What could be causing this? I'm a server n00b. Is there a setting I should be doing to one of my servers configuration files to make it run faster?

My website gets 30-40,000 visitors a day and these problems always occur during peak hours. It would be easier to deal with this though if not for the fact that the server load is always so low. How is it possible for the site to get so slow while the server load is always so low?

Will More RAM Increase Site Load Times

Jun 14, 2007

I currently have 256MB RAM on a VPS. I was wondering, if I upgrade to 512MB RAM will that increase load times on my website?

If so, should one expect the load times be significantly greater - maybe twice as fast?

Trojan Detected On Initial Load Of Site

Jan 8, 2008

I have 2 reseller accounts with one provider, and in the last several days I have noticed that when you visit the site for the first time, my AV software detects a trojan on the site, but the code & html files are 100% clean!

I'm suspecting that there is something being injected into the scripts from the server daemons that's either running or something else.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Make Site Load Faster Other Than Replication?

May 7, 2008

what can make site load faster other than replication

(well lets assume that design wise it is ok and doesnt content heavy contents...)

i have heard that increasing networking speed at the server level can make site much faster...
is it true..?

is there any tweak bandwidth wise...

suppose we get 1tb bandwidth per month compared to 100gb ...
will that make site faster...

we want to host a photogalley site...which is fast or images are shown in faster way....

Does The Server Site Load Affect On The Child Sites

Sep 9, 2008

I have seen 1 vps provider having very poor ping results in few online ping sites and they have a very cluster slow loading pages as well.

One of my friend has a package with them, the ping results are very poor even for him as well. Just made an traceroute found its on some node1.vpsprovider.com

Ya, one more major important similarity noticed was, the vps provider emails weren't set properly to yahoo mail, and my friend's emails sent from the server to yahoo weren't delivered as well.

So if the vps provider has poor content may be due to firewall or internal settings do the systems under the node also be affected?

I have no problems with my host so nothing to be worried about, but need to help him as he is just starting it out with a cheaper vps

Website Extremely Slow To Load/doesn't Load (numtcpsock)

Dec 20, 2007

I've been having trouble with my VPS for a while now. In the QoS alerts page in Virtuozzo it seems to be a problem with numtcpsock and tcprcvbuf, mainly numtcpsock.

Copy these into the browser:
i18.photobucket.com/albums/b106/gnatfish/qosnumtcpsock2.jpg

And when i run cat /proc/user_beancounters:

i18.photobucket.com/albums/b106/gnatfish/beancounters2.jpg

This line is particularly scary:
numtcpsock 164 164 166 166 7321

What do i need to do, to get the website running again? It's only one site on the vps a proxy. So i thought a vps would be able to handle one proxy.

Static Routes With Linux & Shorewall (site To Site VPN Virtual Private Network)

Mar 29, 2009

Attached is a (badly) drawn diagram of two sites, connected by a vpn.

The site to the left, is network 10.0.0.0/24 which runs a linux server as the router for the network.

The site to the right, is network 10.1.0.0/24 which runs a windows 2003 server as the router for the network.

Now, my problem is, the clients behind the windows 2003 server can ping any machine on the first network because i setup a static route to route all traffic to 10.0.0.0/24 over the vpn interface.

now, my problem is, only the linux server can ping any machine on the windows 2003 network, any client behind the linux server cant seem to route over the interface.

I have the following route on the linux server: .....

Plesk Automation :: Adding Dedicated IP Breaks Site (visitors Land On Default Site)

Apr 14, 2015

Starting point: a working site using a shared IPv4, dedicated IPv6, and SSL. HTTP and HTTPS work, the latter only using SNI of course.

The good news: If I simply allocate an IP resource of 1 to a subscription it is pulled from the pool, assigned to the service node, assigned to the web site, DNS is updated, and the site is automatically changed to using a Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6.

The bad news: visitors land on the default web site of the service node, with the default SSL certificate.

Other info: I can't ping the new IP, even though it shows in "ip a l" and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0. [edited]

After the IP assignment, it is still installed, and /etc/httpd/conf/plesk.conf.d/ip_default/domainname.conf shows the new certificate is being used.

However, a second set of VirtualHost entries is created in server.conf for this IP for ports 80 and 443, with NameVirtualHost enabled on the new IP. The port 443 entry uses the default certificate. Apache's setup this default VirtualHost entry will override the web site configuration because Apache is listening on port 443 with the wrong cert.

If I go to "Change webspace settings" and toggle to Shared IPv4, Dedicated IPv6 the site works again via HTTPS, and Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6 breaks it again. Setting the SSL cert to None and back again does not work.

Setting the SSL cert to None, changing to a dedicated IP, and enabling SSL results in the server being inexplicably inaccessible...browsers no longer connect to either the default site or the correct site, and I don't see any entries in the vhosts's logs.

Some Sites Load Slow, Some Sites Load Fine, Server Load Is Fine

Aug 12, 2008

I'm having the oddest issue. For some reason, some of the websites on my server load fine, and some take a really long time to load (2 minutes).

Now, the server load is fine, and the size of the sites aren't the issue either. I've restarted Apache and a couple more services, and still the same sites seem to load very slow.

What could be causing this since it's only effecting certain websites?

Database Site Vs Comany Site

Jun 29, 2009

I'm on a short assignment to inventory and manage the fixed assets of a small company, and we've just bought a web-based database for this purpose. While I'm pretty good at administering/running local databases, the web part has me stymied. Our company is between IT people, and there's no one on site with any more idea than I have about what's going on!!

Here's what I have so far:

--The company has a website which I'll call "ourwebsite.org" -- which I think, from searching the IP address the website points to, is hosted by HostMySite.com.

--There's also a record in DNS Management with the same name (ourwebsite.org), but pointing to our little server's local IP address.

--I need to find a way to get my database -- which I can access on the network at (server's IP address)/database (ie 0.0.00.0/database) -- online. I tried creating records in DNS Management (for ex., assets.ourwebsite.org) that point to our server's IP (the one that, if I type it in on the network, I can get to the site I'm looking for), but get generic "can't find the page" or "can't connect to the server" errors, even after 72 hours, when trying to access it from off the network.

--If I browse to assets.ourwebsite.org/database on the server itself, I get to the website! But if I go to that page from any other computer, on or off the network, it doesn't work.

--The Server is running Windows Server 2003

So, what are my options? Do I have to talk to the HostMySite.com people to add this page? Shouldn't I just be able to use my server's name (ourcompanyadc.ourcompany.org) and have that route to the server? What's going on here! Is there a simple way to get a tiny local-server-hosted website online outside of the network?

I just transferred a domain from one cpanel box to another.

Now, that site is showing someone else's page. I've seen this happen before, but I cannot remember the fix.

the virtual host in httpd.conf is fine, shows proper IP, username, docroot, etc

Dns zone is fine as well.

The domain is using the server's main IP, so that's not the cause.

VPS Load

Mar 16, 2009

I just got a futurehosting VPS recently and something is puzzling me. Is it normal that an idle CPanel virtuozzo VPS that has no sites on it should display "top" loads of between 1 and 4 regularly? I've been watching the load for a bit now and it keeps jumping between 0-4. When it goes 1 or above, the WHM panel becomes really slow, timing out... They seem to use a beast 8 core machine, so it would take some activity to cause even a 1 load..

I do not have much knowledge about VPS hosting, on a dedicated I would expect the loads to stay 0-0.2 at this point... Is the 1-4 load showing the result of heavy usage by other VPS users on the node? There is absolutely nothing that could cause a load in my vps as far as I see... Is this perfectly normal on any VPS?

CPU Load: 259.33/166.35/119.93

Jul 14, 2009

You think this is funny? Not at all.

I'm on LON03 server and I recive yesterday from Future Hosting this advise about hight load.

I got then 1 month ago, and the solution was *JUST* to remove a phpBB website with 80+ users.
I do not believe that the VPS could get this kind of loads.

Funny is that the VPS was "monitored" by them at the same time. They say the load spikes out for times to times in a matter of seconds.

This load is taken from the Parallels Infrastructure Panel or even the Node Panel, not from the VSP itself. Even when I'm logged in.

I've been a client for 6 month, and 2 of the last 3 constantly getting CPU hight usage. Strange is, that I come from a 512mb/25gb PowerVPS server to a 1GB/30GB server, with the *SAME* sites.

Anyway, the prupose of this topic is to:

- check if anyone had this problem (problem is: beeing sure that this load is IMPOSSIBLE to be created from yout service)

- recommend a decent VPS provider besides Future Hosting and PowerVPS.
