HostNine - Hijacked A Client Account; Won't Give Files Back

Apr 21, 2008

I have been with HostNine for almost a year now and have had reasonably decent service, until now.

They recently suspended one of my client's accounts. Understandable, the account had some very old PHP files on them. Let me preface this by stating that I am very sympathetic to hosts who have to deal with problem clients who have sites that slow down shared servers for everyone else on them.

I have tried my hardest to work with HostNine to get these files back and ensure that this account is not a problem on their server. I have never once asked for them to restore the account "as is", all have I have asked is that they backup the files and the database for me (I would do it myself, but they locked me out of the account), so that I can investigate the problem and do testing to ensure that it doesn't cause them problems again.

All in all, getting anyone to co-operate has been unsuccessful. Getting a hold of them has been a hassle (from the time I e-mailed them about the issue to the time I received my first response was a span of over 6 hours). Getting them to co-operate has been impossible. Their "Support Manager", Alex, in broken English has told me next to nothing, aside to accuse me of trying to "get around this" and that I would need to move the account to one of their dedicated plans. I have asked that the account simply be backed up, but have not received any response so far, as time ticks away and the client whose account this was becomes more and more frustrated as their files are effectively being "held hostage".

My last complaint is that they never notified myself, nor the client that they had suspended the account.

Has anyone else had problems with trying to get their files back after a host has locked you out of your account? What are my options? Does the hosting company technically "own" the files, simply because they are being hosted on their server?

Allowing Whm Installed And Use In Share Hosting Account

Apr 20, 2009

This is one of my thoughts and a valid one based on my own experience.

One of the problems with shared hosting account that comes with multiple domain/web hosting, is that all the hosted domains shared one single cpanel and one root directory where all the addon domains directories and files are all jammed up together with the maindomain's directories and files.

Notably is some php scripted sites running on addon domains were unable to function effectively. One such example is using imagevue - a photo slideshow/gallery script. The problem of no photos or photos unable to load/show when the site is called directly from the addon domain [url]

However, when accessed through the maindomain [url] it has no such problem and the photos showed up.

With the above incident and having tried on three other different webhosts, it's clear that something has to be done or otherwise, having multiple domain hosting has no real benefits if you consider the above matters.

As such, the only solution I can think of is to install whm on our shared hosting account so that we can have each added domain to have its own independent cpanel.
So long as we are not doing any reselling activities, there is no reason for the webhost to object or refused.

If your webhost is genuinely care about you and truly to provide an enhanced and efficient webhosting experience, then whm is one way to overcome any shortcomings from existing facility of using a single cpanel for all your multiple addon domains.

Of course, another alternative is to use subdomains from the main domain and redirect all your addon domain sites to the subdomains. That would really defeat the purpose of having addon domains in the first place. Also, why should we? since the hosting account is for multiple domain hosting.

Webhosts offering so-called unlimited domain hosting or limited multiple domain hosting on a single cpanel, should review the existing known issues such as the one mentioned above, and consider using whm to overcome such issues, thus truly provide a pleasant and effective multiple domain web hosting experience to its customers.

Webhosts should tweak and enhance its existing features/softwares/hardwares to improve the overall webhosting services.

How Can A Hosting Company Give Away A Free Domain Name For Life

May 30, 2008

I am just curious, I know that it is a great customer retention hook, but really, and how about unlimited bandwidth? This is my first post on the forum, and I will be asking many more questions as I want to get the inside scoop before I take the reseller plunge.

At first glance it seems as though the advertising is throughout the site and not just in the advertisement section. I know it's only $7.95, but for life? I guess if they're paying for 2 years at a time, but month to month there is no way. They would end up with a ton of registered domains, and allot of parked domains. Oh well just thought I would ask.

Many of the VPS providers I've looked at don't back up the servers that house the VPSs and as such don't back up the VPSs either - have you considered what would happen should the VPS itself be erased (such as what happened to vaserv/fsckvps not too long ago)?

Change From Share To VPS

Oct 28, 2009

I am teetering on the edge of over using my shared account and have decided it is time to move on to a VPS. This has been a long time coming, but the economy has held me back and now I am running out of options. I have looked at several hosts and just wanted some recommendations. Since this is the first time to run a VPS, I assume a managed VPS is better for me. I am currently looking at KnownHost.com and VPS.net since they are both well reviewed here. I would just like recommendation on what to consider based on my wants.

I do not need much horse power behind the server as I have just pushed passed 20meg of ram at my current host; about max for them. I need a LAMP setup (PHP5, MySQL 5) for 4-5 sites of which only two get any real traffic, the others are just family blogs.

So this is what I think I need, please feel free to make suggestions on hosts or other considerations.

1. 256meg of RAM.

2. 5-10 gig of space

3. CentOS

4. Control Panel - Have used CPanel

5. Less than 200 gig of bandwidth.

6. 2 IPs.

7. Can use Wordpress MU

How To Give All Resources To MySQL

Aug 16, 2008

I got a dedicated server running, which is administered by DirectAdmin, which I mainly use as a mysql server. Now my question would be, what would I do to give all resources possible to mySQL? I mean I donīt wanna take down directadmin and setup mySQL only, so I want to keep directadmin but give almost all server resources to mySQL?

What I did so far is adjust all tables, do indexes and stuff.

The background is that at certain times I face server loads of 40 caused by many external servers of mine querying the mySQL database on the server I am talking about.

So while the load is mainly below 0.1 it sometimes goes up to 40. So this peak I wanna slow down a little bit by giving all resources to mySQL. To say that beforehand splitting the queries from external servers is not an option - they all need to be done at the same time.

So I would really be interested and thankful in what you would advice to do to optimize the mySQL service?

BTW system is running on debian.

Setting Up A File Share In A VPS

Jan 9, 2009

I'm sure you all may have heard this question before, so I'm sorry if I'm beating a dead horse...just can't seem to find a good answer. I am interested in setting up a fileserver / fileshare on a VPS so that I can create a mapped drive on a windows PC which points to the fileshare on the VPS. I have a client who currently uses a physical server to perform this task, however this physical server is under-utilized and somewhat unnecessary. I mentioned the possibility of moving to a VPS and he seemed interested.
I decided to purchase an entry-level account from VPSLAND to use for testing purposes prior to moving forward with the project. I can't seem to get anything to work so I'm looking for ideas.

I purchased a VPSLAND Windows-based EZ-series VPS with Plesk and all the other bundled goodies.

Need 2 Sites To Share Space

Dec 19, 2008

for my inexperience and lack of techno speak...

With my last hosting company I was able to buy another domain, but use my existing web space I was using for a different domain, so I didn't need to purchase more web space as what I had was plenty for both my sites. This was a feature that I was able to select from as part of a bonus offer.

With my new host, I can not see this feature (whatever you may call it) and when I asked

my hosting company about it, they just said 'yes, we can park domains'...maybe they didn't understand my question, because I don't think I'm parking it.

Can I do this with any hosting company? - have 2 different domains and sites sharing my one space?

Should You Give Your Password To The Support Agent

Apr 6, 2009

My dedi host, was having all sorts of problems with simply just setting up a box, taking them roughly a week, and I'm still waiting for a resolution.

Anyhow,

Windows validation failed, I contacted them to open up a ticket, They wanted the password to root because I've changed the default password they gave me, so I gave them the password

(1)Should I not be doing this, or do you have to give them the password when they ask.
(2)Can this have been resolved without giving them password to root.

They said it'd be resolved in an hour, I emailed them back and they said they'll email me when it's done. But they've closed off the ticket.

(3)Issue hasn't been resolved, how's anyone going to be working on it if the ticket is closed? Shouldn't that ticket be left open till the issue is resolved?

Wow I'm so green behind the ears with all this stuff.
