Need VPS Hosting With Mysql 4.X Support

May 7, 2009

Hey all. I have some legacy web applications that requires MySQL 4.X to function. Too much pain to upgrade. Can any of you recommend a VPS linux hosting provider that you can vouch for, who also support MySQL 4?

I am currently using MediaTemple GS which has MySQL 4 support; however, recent problems have made me want to consider other options. Unfortuantely, MediaTemple DV (thier VPS option) does not have MySQL 4 as an option.

Many thanks.

Transfer Hosting To New Server - Disabling Apache ASP Support

May 5, 2015

I'm working on transferring my Hostings to a new server, but ran into some problems.

Transferring the data from one Plesk 12 server to another works quite well using the migration manager, although you have to create the service plans by hand as well as you need to work through the server configuration parameters.

After re-creating the service plans I wanted to link and sync them to the subscriptions, but unfortunately I have no success to do so, because everytime I try to get them in sync, it tells me that Apache ASP support is enabled for the subscription and needs to be disabled. Plesk then tells me, the setting is disabled, but next time you try to sync the subscription... ASP is back enabled.

Problem is that on the old server I had Apache ASP enabled and used it in my hostings.

I tried to solve the problem using the command line tools, but "./subscription -u domain.name -asp false" returns "SUCCESS: Update of domain 'domain.name' completed.", but you can guess, same problem.

As a last resort I disabled Apache ASP support for my hostings on the old server, deleted everything on the new one and I got no warnings before migrating about the missing ASP feature.

But unfortunately this procedure ended up with the same problem as before.

Is there a way to remove the ASP support from the existing subscriptions?

Windows - Realtime File Share Replication

Sep 11, 2009

I'm trying to find a low cost solution for realtime file share replication in a windows environment.

It doesn't look like there are any open source windows cluster filesystems around, so the only viable option I found would be running OpenFiler in a replication cluster on Hyper-V nodes. Has anyone worked with this, does it work reliably?

The required IO throughput on these shares would really be minimal and my biggest concern is 100% availability.

Why Is Apache Losing Market Share

Jul 25, 2007

I just looked at netcraft and was surprised to see apache's market share down to 50%. Last time I looked in 2005 it was at 70% and climbing. You can clearly see that Microsoft and Apache are a near perfect reflection of each other.

So why is everyone going to Windows servers now?

Windows Crash When Saving Files To Linux Share

May 19, 2008

We have a Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 6GB of RAM and about 20 terminal services users logging in. These users then launch a program called Accuthin Thin Client giving them access to a piece of software called Southware that runs on a Centos 5 Linux server on the same network.

Problem seems to be that saving files to the network share causes windows to blue screen and crash. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I know it is a shot in the dark but we have been investigating this issue for 4 months, have replaced the Windows server 5 times, increased RAM to 8 GB and installed Enterprise edition clean but the issue follow no matter what we do.

Apache :: CIFS File Share To Store Images

Mar 28, 2014

I recently started building out a new network rack to provide a production web site. The new equipment stack includes a disk array providing a CIFS file share to store images to be served up by Apache.

I have had zero luck in getting Apache to properly access the imagestore from the network share. I've read more Google pages on this subject today than I can count, but I am still not having any success getting this working right.

I'll do my best to explain the configuration.

I have an ESXi host running several virtual machines. Each machine needs to be able to access the shares. Each host has multiple network interfaces, each connected to a separate subnet. The virtual machines are running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition.

The disk array is file mode access, with NFS and CIFS shares. It has interfaces on both subnets that each VM can reach. I have established a stand alone CIFS server, with the shares configured. They are accessible from the VMs.

I have mapped the share to a drive letter on the VM client, and it works properly from the logged in account. I have full control over files on the file system (create, modify, delete).

The VM has Apache 2.4.9 installed.

Things I've tried with no success:

-created a symlink to the CIFS mounted drive into the webroot directory
-added an alias to the CIFS mounted drive
-added the aliased directory using the <Directory> directive
-added the alias and directory directives using UNC references

I am seeing errors like "path is invalid" mostly, but when I try to add the mapped drive (f or the UNC referenced directory, the Apache service won't start.

I added a separate user for the Apache service, and added it to the group that has privileges to talk to the share, still didn't work.

Allowing Whm Installed And Use In Share Hosting Account

Apr 20, 2009

This is one of my thoughts and a valid one based on my own experience.

One of the problems with shared hosting account that comes with multiple domain/web hosting, is that all the hosted domains shared one single cpanel and one root directory where all the addon domains directories and files are all jammed up together with the maindomain's directories and files.

Notably is some php scripted sites running on addon domains were unable to function effectively. One such example is using imagevue - a photo slideshow/gallery script. The problem of no photos or photos unable to load/show when the site is called directly from the addon domain [url]

However, when accessed through the maindomain [url] it has no such problem and the photos showed up.

With the above incident and having tried on three other different webhosts, it's clear that something has to be done or otherwise, having multiple domain hosting has no real benefits if you consider the above matters.

As such, the only solution I can think of is to install whm on our shared hosting account so that we can have each added domain to have its own independent cpanel.
So long as we are not doing any reselling activities, there is no reason for the webhost to object or refused.

If your webhost is genuinely care about you and truly to provide an enhanced and efficient webhosting experience, then whm is one way to overcome any shortcomings from existing facility of using a single cpanel for all your multiple addon domains.

Of course, another alternative is to use subdomains from the main domain and redirect all your addon domain sites to the subdomains. That would really defeat the purpose of having addon domains in the first place. Also, why should we? since the hosting account is for multiple domain hosting.

Webhosts offering so-called unlimited domain hosting or limited multiple domain hosting on a single cpanel, should review the existing known issues such as the one mentioned above, and consider using whm to overcome such issues, thus truly provide a pleasant and effective multiple domain web hosting experience to its customers.

Webhosts should tweak and enhance its existing features/softwares/hardwares to improve the overall webhosting services.

Apache/MySQL Hosting In 2 Locations -tutorial?

Jun 27, 2008

I'd like to have the ability to offer hosting in two geographical and network diverse locations for both Apache and MySQL. Two entirely different instances, with different everything. ie: high avail to the max. Obviously the MySQL part is harder due to the dynamic nature.

I can appreciate the technical aspects of the question - such as data needing to replicate to 2 locations, dealing with static versus dynamic data, etc. In short, there's a few ways this could be done.

I've not been able to find a guide in my Google searches, but I'm sure this is something that has been setup before.

If you're someone with experience in having had set this up, perhaps it would be easiest if we just speak directly and work something out, either via payment or giving you a dedicated server on my network. My AIM name is IGSOBEHELPER.

Please note that I am hoping to start a technical discussion about this, hence I am not posting the message in the employment section. I hope this is not off topic because of this.

Fast UK Host With MySQL Support

Apr 18, 2008

I currently run a website which is hosted with storminternet.co.uk and, while I can't fault their reliability, the (lack of) performance is undermining the usefulnes of the website.

Key features of the website are:

- completely MySQL/PHP driven so the host needs MySQL support and processor power . Some of the MySQL queries are fairly complex and call upon multiple tables of large datasets.

- monthly bandwidth is much less of an issue than speed (if that's not an oxymoron) as the number of visitors is currently <250/day.

- most if not all of the visitors are from the UK

In terms of budget I would be willing to go £150+/year if the service was top quality.

Actually, the configure command generates a bad Makefile.

Open the Makefile and look for a line staring with EXTRA_LIBS

You will see that the option “-lmysqlclient” is repeated twice. Delete one of them and save the Makefile.

Now, you should be able to run the Make command and compile PHP without any issues.

MySQL Error: Client Does Not Support Authentication Protocol

Jun 17, 2008

"Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

I upgraded from MySQL 4 to 5 and everything was fine for about a week. On Monday, I get the error above. From what I've read, this is the oldpassword/new password hash error that I can fix in about 2 minutes on my server. However, this is on a Parcom server, and Parcom has been sloooowww to react.

Can anyone think of another reason why this would be coming up? It's running fine on 3 other PCs that I run as a backup. I've dropped the database twice and rebuilt it twice, still with the same error. Ditto for the user/pass.

Apache :: Latin Character Support In UI

Mar 25, 2013

There is a requirement by the customer In order to display latin characters correctly in the UI, we need to add charset information in httpd.conf file.

We have added the AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 in httpd.conf.

Even after adding the above charset in httpd.conf the changes was not reflecting.

And there was a reply by the customer that : Even after adding those lines to httpd.conf file, I am not getting characters (like ö, ä, ü) properly sent to my application.

This works perfectly fine in my local system where I am not using apache web server. But fails when I deploy the same code to QA, where the Apache webserver is used.

Plesk 12 On Ubuntu - How To Enable Apache ASP Support

Nov 17, 2014

I just have started to setup a web-environment using Plesk 12 on Ubuntu 14.04LTS.

I have the following problem:

I have setup a service-plan that enables Apache ASP. When I try to create a webhosting using this service-plan I run into a message saying that the service-plan tries to ENABLE ASPs, but the available setting is DISABLED (only option) and the webhosting will be setup with ASP DISABLED (and the webhosting will be out of sync with the service-plan).

Trying to figure out the reason for this behaviour I checked the site_isolation_settings.ini (in /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/). In this file asp is set to on (no comment sign on start of the line).

Then I looked for the custom view settings for the power user view (which I am currently not using - I use the service provider view): In the hosting parameters ASP is ticked.

After that I checked the installed (and installable) features of Plesk; especially the Web-Hosting-Features. Surprisingly I noticed there is no option to install Apache ASP support!!!

Remark: I installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS Server in minimal configuration (SSH-Server configuration) directly after that I started the Plesk installation...(might this be the reason?)

How can I make Apache ASP work?

HostFresh Hosting And Support

Sep 11, 2008

I am currently hosted with HostFresh on their HongKong sever (Shared Hosting) and my site has been down for 7 days now!

I tried emailing them for several days, before calling their US phone line 3 days ago, which I was told they could not help and had to wait for an emailmwhich i replied I had been waiting 3 days for a reply..... later that day I finally get a response for my email which asked what the hell is wrong and when it will be fixed, the simply say- site was nullrouted and have to wait for it to come online
this was 3 days ago now... I have sent 1 (sometimes 2) emails per day since, I currently have 8 open tickets, all ranging from the last 6-7wks - YES... I had open tickets when this all began t do with me paying my bill twice, which i heard nothing for weeks so I did a charge back through PayPal.. another mater.
Does anyone else have this problem with support there?
and with the site?

is there a way I can get my files of the server and DB?

can someone please advise what I should do?

I am hopeless with out them as they have my site files, otherwise i would have dumped them days ago!

by the way, I have emailed them number of times, they just ignore me, I am going to be calling again t the U.S in the morning, though they have no idea, and frankly nor do I - I need my DB it has my whole site for the last 18mths on it - over 10,000 members info.

Hosting PHP With FTP And Dbase Support

Also, at the risk of asking a very broad question, is there a place to go to get consolidated reviews of web hosting companies?
