i bought the domain on name.com
how long does it take ? when i enter the domain name i registered, it just takes me to parking.php.....
i've contacted name.com support, but still no response.

Just purchased a domain name and looking for hosting. Spent the last 2 nights reading reviews/complaints, but do not know which are genuine. Too many companies too pick from. Do not know which ones are good or to aviod. I had a website with webhostingpad, but they couldn't get my webmail to work, so I cancelled. Apart from that, the service wasn't bad. Now hunting for a new web host. Newbie, so don't need such big resources. Website is to promote a home school. A few pics and webmail that works is all I need. Site builder would be good too. Domain Parking - Wildcard Domain Name Server (DNS)?
We have a lot of unused domains that we'd like to setup domain parking for. To keep it simple, we'd like to just change the namesevers to ns1.domainparking.com and ns2.domainparking.com (not real nameservers!) and the domains would then automatically show a simple web page. We use cpanel servers and are wondering how easy this is to do? I've seem mention of wildcard dns? Is that the answer?

Domain Parking With Win2k3 Domain Name Server (DNS)?
i have about 8 different domains i'd like to point to a nameserver (ns1./ns2.mydomain.com) on Win2k3 server, but i can't get them resolved through my nameserver without creating a manual forward lookup entry for each *parked* domain separatly.. Does anyone know how to resolve "parked" domains automatically on Win2k3 DNS?? I just can't find any answer for this, everything i've found required manual creation of lookup entries.. anyone?

I have got a VPS with basic LAMP installed. I want to park my domains, and create subdomains etc. I don't have any control panel, because I don't know how to install it. My VPS provider provides me a free (public? they use it for all of the VPS they host) name servers, but I don't know how to use them Does anyone have any links to tutorials, or anyone could explain me how to do it? There is some BIND9, but I don't know how to configure it. Lets say my site is stored in /var/www/page1 so is it posible to park domain to display content in that folder? Also I heard about some A records and CNAME, is it better solution? I know that you have to create A record pointing to IP address, but what to do next? I dont have a lot of money to pay my provider (they charge quite a lot for servers configuration, because its unmanaged services) Maybe any trusted person can configure my VPS? (ftp to create users, dns, or explanation how to use A records, secure php; GD). But I cant pay much, only $10 - $15 paypal

Parking A Domain Under A Subdomain
I have 2 domains ie. red.com blue.com. They are both on seperate servers. I want red.com to be a subdomain for blue.com. I went ahead and created an A host for red.blue.com, I then created a virtualhost and everything is working, I can pull up red.blue.com and it pulls up the same data if I were to go to red.com. Here is my issue. I want to have red.com pull up red.blue.com by default so blue.com gets credit for traffic, I am moving red.com and moving it all into blue.com. Hopefully this makes sense. Also, I want to make sure nothing breaks my current search engine results.

VPS For Managing Domain Parking
I have 65 parked domains that are reasonably high traffic (26000 hits per day). I'm looking to run my own VPS server to manage these domains. Server Appears To Be Down From Only Some Locations
I have a client who says his site is currently down. He can not get to any sites on my dedicated server. However, I can get to all sites just fine and have not seen any downtime. My host tech support says the server is online and responsive and has closed my ticket. Ping tests (at www.just-ping.com) show severe packet loss from almost all locations (see screen shot below) How else can I test if my server is visible from multiple locations? Are there other tools/sites I can try?

Host will only update DNS in batches, takes several hours for a DNS change, is that normal? Well today my mail stopped working and it turns out the A record for mail was deleted. How it got deleted I don't know. I called my host and after speaking to 2 techs, they said that have added my request to a batch, and that would update in a few hours. I said to him, batch? What can't you do it instantly? He said thats not the way their DNS works and any DNS change would affect thousands of other sites they are hosting. Does anyone know what kind of dns system these people could possibly have where they can not reload a single zone? And by affected, I think he means the sites will go down for a minute or so, while it relaods every zone. Is this really the case, or are these people just idiots?

We are now Ltd and considering VAT registration. Basically we are unsure if becoming VAT registered when you do not need to is all that it's cracked up to be, what are your thoughts on all this? To my understanding you don't have to be VAT registered until you earn 60K+ per year. Therefore is it worth it in the webhosting industry, because if you have more clients that means more VAT you have to pay each period (after outgoing deductions). Securing My Site So Only Registered Users Can Download Files
I'm setting up a web site for my online music library, doing it the hard way and learning as I go! What I want to do I keep all the audio files secure so only registered users can get at them, how do I do this? FTP? permissions? Can I pass the user data from the client database somehow or do I have to set it up manually for each client? I'm using php and mysql and have a table set up with all the file locations in it and that side of things is mostly working well. Once a user gets the URL of the file how do I make sure only that user can download the file? Runing Php Outside The Domain
I am implementing a global folder system so for example all the domains can go to an admin page using /admin I need to use some php code to strip www from the address, but the php does not run outside de domain name, I am getting the php code directly on the webpage, and if I use the same script inside any domain name it do work! How-to Disable Php Functions Per Domain
When dealing with the security of your server you will eventually get to the part were you will want to disable some php functions. The only problem on shared hosting is that you cannot disable exec for a domain and enable that function for an other that needs it because of some lame script. Eventually you will get to the part were you will need to enable exec on the entire server because of one site. There is a solution to this and it’s called suhosin. Suhosin has a configuration variable called ”suhosin.executor.func.blacklist” which can be used to disable some php functions. The difference between this variable and disable_functions in php.ini is that it can be set for all the sites and then it can be modified for a domain only (it can be overwritten) so you will be able to disable exec on the entire server and enable that function for a single domain. I will not write here how to install suhosin. Also, you only need the extension for this so you do not need to patch php and recompile. IMPORTANT: I have noticed that the suhosin extension 0.9.20 will not work anymore as there are some problems with it. It’s ok as long as we have 0.9.18. Probably the next version of the extension will be fixed to work ok again so remember to use version 0.9.18 for this until the problem is fixed. Ok, so to use suhosin as the php function blocker we need to comment out disable_functions in php ini (yes, enable all the functions) and then set in php.ini suhosin.executor.func.blacklist to something like this: suhosin.executor.func.blacklist = exec, passthru, shell_exec, system, pcntl_exec, proc_open, proc_nice, proc_terminate, proc_get_status, proc_close, leak, apache_child_terminate, posix_kill, posix_mkfifo, posix_setpgid, posix_setsid, posix_setuid, escapeshellcmd, escapeshellarg You can add as many functions as you like. After that, all the functions added in suhosin.executor.func.blacklist will not work anymore in php scripts. If you need to enable a function for a domain, let’s say exec, you will have to edit apache configuration file and add suhosin.executor.func.blacklist without the exec function: <VirtualHost 127.0.0.1> ServerAlias www.test.com ServerAdmin webmaster@test.com DocumentRoot /home/test/public_html php_admin_value suhosin.executor.func.blacklist "passthru, show_source, shell_exec, system, pcntl_exec, popen, pclose, proc_open, proc_nice, proc_terminate, proc_get_status, proc_close, leak, apache_child_terminate, posix_kill, posix_mkfifo, posix_setpgid, posix_setsid, posix_setuid, escapeshellcmd, escapeshellarg" </VirtualHost> Now exec is disable on the server but it’s enabled on the test domain.

63 Hours And Still Going Downtime With Liquidweb
like to clarify this is not a post to bash liquidweb. I have been a loyal customer of LW for the past 2 years (almost) My websites have been down since Thursday 3:00 a.m due to "DDos Attack" on Friday night, the network engineer told me the "DDos Attack" has stopped and problem should have been resolved. However, no websites were accessible. On Saturday, I ensure you I have made many phone calls to Liquidweb dedicated server support and try to resolve this issue. (Never once did I raise my voice and they were being very polite.) I believe the server admins that were helping was at the end of their shifts and every time I try to make a phone call to the person that was assisting me to get an update, liquidweb would tell me that he has gone home. Every time the server admin finishes his shift, the support ticket is not assigned to anyone else that is working until I make a phone call to them stating my problem. I own quite a few large sites that generate over 3 millions hits per day and every hour of downtime means I will be losing valuable clients and revenue. That is why I am extremely frustrated with the 63 hours downtime as it seems like the results of working hard for the past 2 years is slipping away from me as the clock keeps ticking. I am sorry, I am just trying to share this with fellow webmasters as I really need a place to express my feeling. (None of my friends will understand online business.) Again, I am not bashing liquidweb...I must have really bad luck myself.

CPanel VPS 24-48 Hours
I am currently running DA on my VPS and have about 15-20 accounts on it. We are upgrading to a dedicated running plesk while we need it, but I have not found a tool or an easy way to transfer DA accounts to plesk without problems. Because of this, I feel it would be easiest to transfer the accounts to a cPanel VPS, then to plesk. I know hosts are not supposed to PM here, but if you can offer me a cPanel VPS sometime within the next week for 24-48 hours for under $5-7, that would be great. This may seem like a little amount of money, but realistically it is a good amount in comparison to the pricing for a whole month of service. It can be OpenVZ, virtuozzo, or Xen.

MySQL 'freezes' Every Few Hours
Im running MySQL 5.0.32 on a Debian Etch server. I recently moved a couple sites from a Debian Sarge (with MySQL 4.1) server over, and now MySQL has become very unstable. Every few hours mysql just hangs on a query. All the following queries are queued and never get executed. The only way to get things running again is forcefully killing and restarting the mysql process. After that things work again...for a few hours. The logs (error and query log) show nothing exceptional. When it hangs and I do a 'show processlist;' I noticed that everytime a SELECT....IN (a,b,c) query is holding up everything. Could the 'IN ()' be the reason for mysql not completing the query and holding up the rest? Another option might be to temp. go back to MySQL 4.1...but that is going to be a real problem on Debian Etch

Top Usage Over Constant 48/72 Hours
I am wanting to get access to 'top -c' for a period of 48/72 hours. Now I have found the following Code: top -c -b -d 15 > top.txt What this does is every 15 seconds add reply 'top -c' to top.txt Now I can make this into a shell script then put it into the background and exit SSH while leaving it running. Now the question is will this use much usage/server load over the 48/72hrs, it will be checking 4 times every minute.

Review Of Future Hosting - 48 Hours
I thought I should share my feelings on FutureHosting even though we have only been on their server for 48 hours. Background --------- I started having my sites hosted back in 1990's and have had about a dozen hosts since then. (Started with Pair.net when they were like maybe 2 of the 3 hosts on the planet, LOL) 90% of the time, I have needed to find a host due to my former host being acquired or some other non-technical reason. So you could say that I tend to stick with a host for as long as possible. I have moved from shared hosting, to reseller hosting, to dedicated hosting, and now to VPS hosting. I started my VPS adventures with PowerVPS. This was about 3 years ago if I recall. Like most here, I did a great deal of homework, read and lurked. PowerVPS was in my top 5 final list. I selected PowerVPS and was extremely happy to put the headaches of dedicated servers behind me. For two years the VPS was very stable. That changed about one year ago. I was told I was hitting resource max and asked to upgrade. Oddly, my sites' traffic was about 1/2 of what it was in the first two years. ie my VPS should have less resources needed. PowerVPS moved many of its legacy VPS users to new hardware. I don't recall they informed me, though they said they did. They did inform me that they would make a decision on the remaining legacy users in terms of billing promotions -- they never did. Downtime continued. I began to notice that their newer techs did not share the same ability of communication and skills as past/founding techs. Answers were curt and became more and more unhelpful. We have all seen this pattern before where a host starts out so well (2 or 3 guys/gals), and as it grows, they add remote staff that just don't have the same passion of the founders, or language skills. (Disclaimer: English isn't my native, so no excuse for lack of communications in business IMHO). Thus, I began my search for a new VPS here. FutureHosting was in my top 5 along with KnownHost, SolarVPS, Jaguar. Actually, I rated them 3 or 4 in my final list. I tested all of these hosts' sales responses and went through the shopping process just before clicking 'sign-me up'. (I work in Ecommerce so I like to see that process). SolarVPS answered my questions the best. KnownHost a close second. I am sure there are a few other good VPS companies like ServInt, Lunar and HostNexus, but their prices just don't reflect the marketplace IMHO. Due to my needs and budget though, I selected FutureHosting as they seem to offer the best balance -- competitiveness and support. FutureHosting - 48 hours ------------------- As my data was on PowerVPS with Plesk, selecting another provider with Plesk was important. Actually, I have always been a Plesk fan having used all the CPs (I just wish they would stop trying to offer 1,000 products and spin off a CP-only company like they were.) FutureHosting (FH) started the migration on Saturday night. Sunday morning I notice that all sites hadn't been moved. I checked my inbox and read the many emails awaiting me. It seemed Plesk was having a hard time using its server migration tool (typical of Plesk that they introduce a feature that doesn't work 100% of the time.) FH informed me they would migrate my VPS (domains, etc) manually. While this was going on, another tech worked on some requests I had related to SSH, root access, etc. What I found in the last 48 hours was what I had hoped for... Techs that received my tickets, and replies that stated WHAT they were doing. I felt informed during the entire process. In some cases, CLEAR explanations were given. In some cases, SIMPLE answers were given -- where I couldn't grasp the why. The level of service was what I experienced in my first year with PowerVPS. And now, a really important point -- EVERY tech that worked on my tickets displayed the same level of competence. All too often, I have felt in the past that the level and ability of techs ranged so much. This became more apparent as of late on PowerVPS (are they contracting out support? No idea.) It was a real pleasure to deal with each tech. I think I counted 5 different names! What I REALLY appreciate was that it was obvious that each tech taking over a ticket READ the entire ticket thread. Too often when a tech takes over due to moving it a tier or shift change, I felt like I needed to explain everything from the start. Gah!! I don't have time or patience for that. Hardware wise, I moved from (PowerVPS) AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246 to Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU E5420 @ 2.50GHz (Future Hosting). In the case of PowerVPS, my VPS was on an old legacy machine that a few of us unlucky ones were still on (We were asked to bump up $$ to go to the new machines, I refused.) I don't know which server is better, but thus far my sites feel much more snappy. I also notice that my former VPS used burst RAM approach vs. SLM. (See my other post http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=896249). I should also state that perhaps PowerVPS uses this in their new machines. No idea. Overall, I am paying the same amount for my new VPS, the sites are loading much faster and most importantly, the service has been top rate. I was a little worried at first because I heard such great reviews of Knownhost and SolarVPS (I am sure they are warranted), but based on the past 48-hours, I must say my selection was right for me in many ways. I'm crossing my fingers that this level of service will continue 3, 5 or more years down the road. If they do, I won't hesitate to recommend FutureHosting to the MANY developers I come into contact with. (I have sent a great deal of leads/business to every host I have been at.) I will need to revisit this thread on my anniversary to see if things continue in such a great manner.
