How Do I Copy CentOS Install To Another RAID Array
Apr 27, 2008
I have probably what is the most simple thing I'm going to have to do soon, but I have never done it so I'm looking for tips of how to do it because I dont want to screw it up.
I want to copy a CentOS install from one RAID array, to another. However, I have a drive image (27GB RAID array) of the old RAID array, but the new RAID array will be larger.
How can I copy the old CentOS install, to a new array?

I have a server with a Dell Perc4e Hardware RAID Controller and 2 Maxtor Atlas 15K2 U320 SCSI. I´m currently having a problem with one of the HD´s. For the second time in about 2 - 3 months, it failed. I reconsctruct the array and everything goes online and healthy. Does this mean this specific HD may not be in the best condition? Shouldn´t it fail and never go back online again, in this case? Is there any chance that the problem is the SCSI cable (i´m not using hot swap cradle, but cable + adapter)?

What kind of raid array can I use while it's being rebuilt?
For instance if a HDD fails, on my servers I need to take the server down in order to rebuild the array. I'd like to be able to rebuild the array without the users to notice it.

wasn't sure if this should go into "technical" or "programming" but I figure someone here will instantly be able to tell me...
(details: I'm on a shared host with cpanel and centos 3)
My hosting service techs refuse to update gnu TAR on the server even though it's several years old at 1.13 and has some know bugs that are annoying for complex calls - (basically the techs use any request like this to try to upsell me to dedicated or VPS which I don't need at my low level)
So I'd like to install a "local" copy of the newer gnu 1.14 or 1.15 TAR (which I *think* is possible?) into my account and have it run instead of the shared copy?
Unfortunately this is beyond my knowledge so thanks for any help in the right direction...

After carefully choosing a VPS Host, I decided to go with SolarVPS. The VPS was created quickly. I needed a SQL server for small developemntal purposes; So I didn't want to shell out the $10/month extra just yet. I submitted I ticket to them with a copy of my CAL and Product Key:
http://www.nuerom.com/sqlcal.pdf
They sent me a e-mail back saying:
I'm sorry but the document you have attached does not reflect that the software is licensed to you so with this limited information you provided I cannot approve the use of SQL Server 2005 Standard on your VPS.
Well, I sent them the CAL and product key, so what more could they want? The copy of SQL server was recieved from a Microsoft Launch Event, Launch Tour 2005, so I didn't get a invoice. I sent them a copy of the items sent out with:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/30/61427015_af82ba821b_o.jpg
And opened a chat with them. The chat conversation is attatched:
http://www.nuerom.com/solarvpschat724.txt
In summary,
I asked what they needed to validate - they claimed they needed a invoice.
I didn't understand how a invoice would prove anything, since it is something that can be generated by anyone in a few minutes.
They claimed they get audited from time to time by Microsoft, so they have to make sure genuine software is running on their VPS.
I offered them my MSDNAA license, since I would be only using the server for developmental purposes. I send the a PDF of the MSDNAA order; only to have them deny it again. They claimed that it wasn't valid because I paid with a paypal business account. Even though the MSDNAA terms clearly state that it is a valid license for test and developmental purposes; and that the license is perpetual.
I offered to ship the DVD, CAL and BOX to them. They claimed that this wouldn't be enough to validate. (Implying, of course, that they had some reason to believe I might have stolen the DVD).
At a loss of what to do; I finally contacted Microsoft to have them validate the product; partner support was very nice and directed me to the appropiate departments. I sent solarvps a e-mail back:
I contacted Microsoft and recieved this information. They advised me that the only restriction on this software is that it is NOT FOR RESALE, and that I may put it in full production use. I was told that if you needed validation, you may call 800-426-9400 option 3, option 1. You may reference my name, or my phone number, which will validate my conversation with Microsoft.
See also,
http://download.microsoft.com/documents/useterms/SQL%20Server%20Standard_2005_English_9137cd88-ab33-48b7-ac2a-544f2ec58c4d.pdf
They have yet to reply. I am at a loss of what to do; as I have other promotional software I'd like to install on that VPS; but if its this much of a hassle, I might just go with another host. Unfortunately, solarvps canceled their refund program, so I am at a loss what to do there.
In particular - I feel that SolarVPS just doesn't want to authorize the SQL server because they want me to pay $10/month. This is way too much validation. Besides, as a MS partner, if they were afraid of the software failing auditing they could have called their MS Partner line to verify it was genuine software. Additionally, I felt that Bogdan Fetita, their "senior tech" had attitude that made me feel very unwelcomed.
Should I just move on and find another VPS server after days of trying to find the right one? Or should I hope solarVPS will lighten up?

I'm playing around with different configurations on my box at home and wanted to practice setting up RAID 1 - 2 harddrives. Here is how I set it up during install. It seems to be working fine, but are there any issues with this?
/dev/hda1 /dev/md0 software/RAID
/dev/hda2 /dev/md1 software/RAID
/dev/hdb1 /dev/md0 software/RAID
/dev/hdb2 /dev/md1 software/RAID
/dev/md0 /boot ext3
/dev/md1 VOLGROUP00 LVM PV
LogVol00 SWAP
LogVol01 /home ext3
LogVol02 / ext3
The Windows user in me wants to be able to verifty that there are indeed two identical copies here, but from my limited knowledge I don't know how to browse the contents of my second hardrive. Everything seems to work by being mounted on something else. How can I verifty that I have done this correctly? /etc/fstab verifies LOgVol01 and LogVol02 but not LogVol00 which is the swap. Is this normal for the swap space not too show up there? It also verifies /dev/md0 but not /dev/md1. Is this because it is a Logical Volume Group or does this indicate there is something wrong with my setup?
final question. I want to test this by unplugging my first hard drive to simulate a failure. what can i expect will happen here? does my bios have to be setup to try to boot from the second drive after the first, and then failing finding the first drive it will just boot from the second? But the RAID is configured to operate on two drives, so won't there now be a misconfiguration that might stop things from working? Maybe i'm missing something here.

Not sure where to post this so i decided to post it here.
I have two drives for RAID 1. The bios RAID and centos recognize the RAID 1. I installed CentOS, and the machine works fine with RAID 1 after installation.
Let call that two drives are drive A and drive B. When I pull off drive B from the case, and insert the other drive which same size with drive B. Then i reboot the machine. The bios RAID recognize the new drive and i rebuild new drive from bios RAID, but when at boot it stuck and gives this message:
switchchroot: mount failed: no such file or directoru
Kernel panic- not syncing: attempted to kill init!
Later, i reinserted the drive B, and reboot then it goes back to normal.

I am currently using areca Raid card with Centos 5 which allows me to configure Raid 6 with SAS drives. But it is really costing a bomb not to say that the lead time in ordering the card is long. Performance wise is fantastic though. Anyone know of any cheaper alternative to areca that can support Centos 5 and Raid 6 SAS Drives?

I have a couple of Dell 1950s and in one of them, I have 2x Seagate 15K.5s that I purchased through Dell and I also have a spare sitting in my rack in case one goes bad, also from Dell.
I was going to be repurposing one of my other 1950s and was going to get two more 15K.5s for it, but wasn't planning on getting them through Dell (rip off?). This way, could still keep the same spare drive around in case a drive went bad in that system as well.
When I was talking to my Dell rep recently when purchasing another system, their hardware tech said you can't use non-Dell drives with Dell drives in the same RAID array because of the different firmware between them.
Anyone know if it is true? Anyone have any experience with using drives from Dell in conjunction with the same model drives from a third party retailer?

Would this be a good setup for a VPS Serving system with 2x 500gb hard disks (up to) 8gb memory.... (Looking to use OpenVZ to create about 14-15 512mb VZ VPS's)?
Host machine to do nothing other than host the VPS's. Host O/S to be Centos 5 x64, guest O/S's to be the usual OpenVZ supported linuxes.
Make 2 software raid partitions 120mb, each
|
+- Make RAID 1, mounted at /boot
Make 2 s/w raid partitions Remainder of drive
|
+- Make 1 LVM Physical Drive, using RAID 1
|
+- Make Logical Partition, 20gb, mounted '/'
+- Make LP, Swap 16gb
+- Make LP. ext3 remainder, mounted as '/vz'
Is it important what order I should make the Logical Partitions? Should I create a /tmp partition? If so, how much?

I have several servers that have a HighPoint RocketRaid 1520 SATA raid card. I have recently discovered that this card requires drivers in the OS to actually take advantage of the raid functionality.
Well, it seems the drivers were never installed. So I essentially do not currently have a raid setup, even though I have a pair of HD's in each of the servers affected. Now, I do have a Windows server that automatically loaded the driver, but the Linux boxes do not have the driver it seems. The instructions for this card state that the driver is installed at the time of OS installation. I bought these servers when I acquired a host a couple of years ago and obviously they weren't setup properly.
So here's my question, I am thinking of trying to install this raid driver on the affected servers now. They have been running for a couple of years this way and I don't want to screw something up. Is this something that I can do at this point without going back to reinstalling the OS, etc? Can the raid driver be installed after the fact here like I'm thinking of doing?
Should I proceed with trying to get this RocketRaid card to work or would I better off buying hardware raid cards that are configured outside of the OS? And if I should go with the hardware level raid, what card do you all recommend? I'm running RHE3 on these servers and they are P4's with 1GB of RAM.

If you want a quick run down as to WHY I want to do this, read here
Basically, my ISP could not get my server running stable on a simple raid 1 (or raid 5) so what it came down to was having them install my system on a single disk. I don't exactly like this, main reason being, if the system (or HDD) crashes, I'll end up with another several hours of down time... So here is my proposal:
Please Note: This will have to be accomplished on a live System (full backups!) over ssh as I don't trust my ISP to do things right as described in my post above.
Current Setup:
CentOS 5.3 x86_64
Dual Xeon 5410
16GB RAM
4x 750GB HDDs
/boot - /dev/sda1 - 512MB (real 471MB) ext3
/ - /dev/sda2 - 50GB (real 46GB) ext3
/home - /dev/sda3 - remaining space (real 642GB) ext3
swap - /dev/sdb1 - 32GB
/backup - /dev/sdb2 - remaining space (real 659GB) ext3
/dev/md0 - /dev/sdc + /dev/sdd - raid 1 (NOTE: uses entire disk, no partitions!)
Proposed Solution:
Code:
vgcreate -s 64M vg0 /dev/md0
lvcreate -L 512M -n lvboot vg0
lvcreate -L 50G -n lvroot vg0
lvcreate -L 5G -n lvtmp vg0
lvcreate --extent 100%FREE -n lvhome vg0
mkfs -t ext3 -m 1 /dev/vg0/lvboot
mkfs -t ext3 -m 1 /dev/vg0/lvroot
mkfs -t ext3 -m 1 /dev/vg0/lvtmp
mkfs -t ext3 -m 1 /dev/vg0/lvhome
Now, I'd like to 'init 1' at this stage but I can't, so I won't (possible solutions?? Possible to umount the / partition??)
Assuming I'd have to do this on a fully live system, I'd disable all services that I can
Code:
/etc/init.d/sendmail stop
/etc/init.d/postfix stop
/etc/init.d/saslauthd stop
/etc/init.d/httpd stop
/etc/init.d/mysql stop
/etc/init.d/courier-authlib stop
/etc/init.d/courier-imap stop
/etc/init.d/amavisd stop
/etc/init.d/clamd stop
/etc/init.d/pure-ftpd stop
/etc/init.d/fail2ban stop
/etc/init.d/syslogd stop
Then we copy all of our data from the single partitions to the raid disks
Code:
mkdir /mnt/newroot
mkdir /mnt/newroot/boot
mkdir /mnt/newroot/tmp
mkdir /mnt/newroot/home
Code:
mount /dev/vg0/lvboot /mnt/newroot/boot
mount /dev/vg0/lvroot /mnt/newroot/root
mount /dev/vg0/lvtmp /mnt/newroot/tmp
mount /dev/vg0/lvhome /mnt/newroot/home
(I think I covered everything)
Code:
umount -l /dev/sda1 (/boot)
umount -l /dev/sda3 (/home)
cp -dpRx /* /mnt/newroot/
mount /dev/sda1 /boot
cp -dpRx /boot/* /mnt/newroot/boot/
mount /dev/sda3 /home
cp -dpRx /home/* /mnt/newroot/home/
Once we have everything copied, update /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab to reflect the changes we made:
vi /etc/fstab
Code:
LABEL=/home /home ext3 defaults 0 3
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults,usrquota,grpquota 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
LABEL=SWAP-sdb1 swap swap defaults 0 0
To
Code:
/dev/vg0/lvhome /home ext3 defaults 0 3
/dev/vg0/lvroot / ext3 defaults,usrquota,grpquota 1 1
/dev/vg0/lvboot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
LABEL=SWAP-sdb1 swap swap defaults 0 0
Moving on, we make a fail safe in the event this doesn't work out:
vi /boot/grub/menu.lst
find
Code:
default=0
add after
Code:
fallback=1
Then we find (in the same file):
Code:
title CentOS (2.6.18-164.el5)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5 ro root=/dev/vg0/vgroot
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-164.el5.img
Add before:
Code:
title CentOS (2.6.18-164.el5)
root (hd3,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5 ro root=/dev/sda2
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-164.el5.img
Where (hd3,0) is /dev/sdc. If the system fails to boot to the raid then it'll auto boot to the single disk (/dev/sda)
then update my ramdisk:
mv /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img_bak
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`
And now to set up grub...
Code:
grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
we should see something like this:
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 15 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
Running "install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/grub.conf"... succeeded
Done.
Code:
> root (hd3,0)
> setup (hd3)
Again, we should see something like this:
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd1)"... 15 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
Running "install /grub/stage1 (hd1) (hd1)1+15 p (hd1,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/grub.conf"... succeeded
Done.
Code:
> quit
From here I think we're ready to reboot, can't see where I missed anything. If all goes well then I should see my volume groups listed in 'df- h'

I have installed Xen on my CentOS ded box, and now I'm trying to install a Guest OS, also CentOS using the following command:
Code:
virt-install -p --prompt -n CentOS2 -r 512 --file=/vm/centos.img --file-size=15 -l [url]
Now everything starts, I come to the network screen (right after the language selection), leave everything on default, it says it is trying to configure the network with DHCP for eth0 and then hangs there for a moment a does nothing.
How do I continue, how do I configure the network correcly.
I am just starting to learn Xen and would appreciate all the input I get.

i have a 32bit centos running with 8 gigs, but only 7 is registering when i contacted support they told me
Your server does in fact have 8GB of physical memory however the reason it is not being recognized is due to the fact that you are using a 32 bit operating system. By default, the 8GB would be recognized if it were a 64 bit OS however on a 32 bit operating system, you must install and boot into the PAE kernel (physical address extension) for the 8GB to be recognized and utilized. The PAE kernel can be installed through yum when connected to your server as root over SSH. Once you have installed the kernel, you will need to reboot the server for these changes to take effect
i tried
yum pae install
yum pae kernel install
both didnt work can anyone give me a quick step by step guide on how to go about this.
