Wise For New Websites To Start Off With A Dedicated Server?

Jul 12, 2008

A lot of people start off with a dedicated server when they first start their website because they feel they will eventually need it anyway. They also don't want to go through the trouble of transferring their website in the future. Do you think it's wise for a new website to do this or do you feel they should start off with shared hosting and then transfer their website after it already has a lot of traffic?

How To Start A Dedicated Server

Mar 1, 2008

I just ordered a server from VD. I got an email said that my server was online from 5 hours ago. However, I do not know how to connect my server. They gave me 2 IPs but when I clicked those, I got an error like this:

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at *.*.*.*.

and they said that my Directadmin control panel will be installed shortly, but after 5 hours, I did not get any more information update from them.

Can the guys tell me what should I do? Those information is enough for me to run a server?

This is the first time I run dedicate server, so it made me a little bit confused.

Dedicated IP Addresses; Multiple Websites With SSL..

Oct 30, 2008

Hello guys, I have been a longtime lurker (too long ) and I look forward to becoming an active member on the site...

I am still in the process of researching a reliable web hosting company. It has been a blessing and a curse to have so many choices. I plan to host multiple ecommerce websites (5) and will need SSL encryption. I have looked at Hostgator as a possible candidate, but their business package has just one dedicated IP address...

If I am running 5 seperate ecommerce websites, will I need 5 seperate dedicated IP addresses in order to utilize SSL for each individual site? My suspicion is yes due to security purposes...
Also what are good SSL certificates? RapidSSL appears to be a cheaper one, but is it the same as other certificate issuers? Or is buying certs equivalant to buying domains; just but the cheapest ones....

Thanks again guys... Just curious on what my options are. I'm "starting" out and testing the waters so to speak so a dedicated server or higher cost solution is out of the question yet. I would like to find a good quality shared server hosting plan with a reputable company who doesn't overloard servers for profit....

Any ideas what you guys would recommend with the above mentioned... ixwebhosting appears perfect for my needs due to the fact you get 8 dedicated IP's (so they say), but I have read nothing but bad things about them + the price is too good to be true...

When I hear the words "Unlimited" I want to run.. Unlimited and Cheap... LOL *rolls eyes* Want quality, fair price, for the above mentioned items...

Wise To Use A CPanel VPS For Shared Hosting?

Apr 3, 2009

I have been hosting several of my clients (for whom I have created a web site) on a cPanel VPS. The VPS is Xen-based, has 1GB of RAM, 2 CPU cores, 80GB of disk space and 800GB of bandwidth. Everything is running smoothly and I'm quite satisfied. It has a VPS-optimised version of cPanel and the speed is just as good as a dedicated (sometimes even better). I even have a second, small, VPS as a secondary nameserver.

Now it comes to this. I am planning to sell shared (and in the future possible reseller) hosting. Is it wise to stick with a VPS or to get a dedicated? The investment it takes differs a lot, since a VPS can be a lot cheaper than a dedicated server (depening on what you need and your provider of course).

Wise To Block Port 25 & 26 (for Email)

Jun 11, 2008

I login & send email through thunderbird using SSL and it's ports (so I no longer connect using 25/26). Occasionally I use webmail (Squirrelmail)

My scripts do send mail via sendmail.

Does my cpanel server still need the basic 25 & 26 ports to deliver and receive mail successfully, or can they be blocked in APF without any problems arising?

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Dedicated Application Pools Stop When Accessing Websites

Jun 9, 2013

I have an issue with Plesk 11. I have a few websites with different subscriptions, each running in a dedicated application pool. The moment I access the website (via browser), the application pool is automatically stopped and 503 Service Unavailable is returned.

After I manually start the application pool, it runs (no stop icon for that app pool in IIIS Manager) until the first attempt to load the website is made.

The users for the respective pools are the ones created by Plesk when subscriptions were created.Details: Pesk Panel 11.0.9 Update #53, IIS8, running on Windows Server 2012.

UK VPS For 15 Websites And VPN Server

Jul 3, 2007

i currently have a reseller server in the states but ive seen for the money im paying (and im not using the space actually) i can get a VPS server here in the UK which i can combine for webhosting and other development projects. I am after a UK based VPS for the following requirements:

Host 15 websites

Access the box remotely and dial-in to the box which needs to be configured as a VPN server (the box will act as a router, i presume masquerading on eth0 for the connected vpn clients to go out through the server and onto the net).

Traffic will not be too high, maybe around 75GB per month.

Around 3-4 websites run forums on (small size phpbb) and the other sites are again small and mostly used for email.

I will need full root access and maximum configurability.

Preferably Suse 10 as i have worked with that before but i am open to suggestions on other OS. I need to configure the pppd service and easier this is via the OS the less time i have to dig in scripts and terminal! I wouldnt mind windows but on a VPS this will be a resource drain so i am happy to get more performance from the box by sticking with smaller footprint of linux.

Plesk for website management, or cpanel, i dont mind either way.

I dont however know how much CPU/RAM i will need, what is a sensible amount? I dont think my requirements are too strenuous, what would be a good sensible amount of RAM to select to allow me to host say 50 web sites in future?

I have heard good things on the forums for the following:

a2b2.com
cheapvps.co.uk
1and1.co.uk

I know you get what you pay for so i do need something reliable, but if people say the service from the above sellers is good i will go for them as the price is fantastic. It would be great to hear of other recommendations also.

Server Costs - High Traffic Websites

Aug 24, 2008

I have a client with a site (wordpress blog) that gets 10,000 + hits a day. I need to find him a dedicated managed server so that his site runs smoothly and also has no outages. I just received a quote from another host for his Managed Dedicated Servers.

CPU1: Intel Xeon 5310 Clovertown (Quad Core)
CPU2: Intel Xeon 5310 Clovertown (Quad Core)
Total CPU Cores: Eight (8)
System RAM: 6144MB (6GB) DDR2 ECC Registered System RAM
Primary Hard Disk: 73GB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 15,000 RPM High-Performance Hard Disk
Second Hard Disk: 250GB SATA-II 7,200 RPM Hard Disk (nightly backup disk)
Data Transfer: 2000GB Premium Monthly Bandwidth (100Mbps uplinked port)
Operating System: CentOS Enterprise Linux 5 64-Bit (x86_64)
Control Panel License: cPanel / WHM + Fantastico Auto Installer$695 a month

He posts about 5-10 blogs a day too, so it's definitely a growing community website. He also has a forum with 6500 posts and 389 members.

Is this a reasonable price for a dedicated server? Would you recommend a different configuration of hardware that might make it cheaper? I would also like some examples of other sites on similar configurations if you have any, so that I can show my client what they use.

All HTTP Requests To My Server Gets Redirected To Malware Websites

Jul 24, 2009

When i try to open any website hosted on my server (around 50 of them) i am being taken to following malware website;

[url]
[url]
This is a problem with my Limnux server running Apache and not a virus on my local computer as customers from all over are reporting the same issue.

As soon as i restart Apache eveything returns to normal with no such redirects.

I think my server is being attacked causing http requests to get redirected to some malicious website.

This issue would resurface almost every hour and would not go away till i restart apache.

So far my Datacenter techs. have not been able to identify the cause of this.

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: Migration Tool To Move Websites From Old IIS6 To New IIS8.5 Server

Jan 23, 2015

We are migrating an existing multi-site Windows2003/IIS6 web hosting system with

CFusion8
MS Access backend databases
SQL2000 backend databases
http and https site access

to

Windows2012 R2/IIS8.5 with
CFusion10
MS Access backend databases (not updated)
SQL2014 databases
http and https site access

On the new system we are looking to add Plesk12 to give users easier management of their own websites.I am about to install the trail version of Plesk12 WebHOST.I have the following questions:

1. Can we use the plesk migration tool to move the websites from the old IIS6 to the new IIS8.5 server?
2. If not, am I right to think we would migrate from IIS6 to IIS8.5 manually and then import these websites into Plesk12 from the new server?
3. Can I migrate the existing websites piecemeal over onto the new server and into the Plesk control panel at the same time as creating brand new websites under the control panel?
4. Once Plesk is installed on the new IIS server is there a KB article on how to add all these existing websites to Plesk - I could not find one.
5. Is the local windows administrator account used for the install used to run any services?

Server Refused To Start Shell/command

Apr 28, 2008

I am having some server issues.

A part of my sshd_config:
Port 2255
Protocol 2
ListenAddress 8x.xx.xx.46
PermitRootLogin no

Recently, when I want to connect to my server using putty, I get "Connection Refused" using the above IP address and port.
When I enter the above IP address (or any other IP address that is stored/set on the server) and port 22, I get "Server refused to start shell/command".

It did work before, using 8x.xx.xx.46:2255 and when I enter 8x.xx.xx.46:22 it will block. But now... not anymore.

I am using "Direct Admin" to do a "System Backup". I do see the right port and IP address in the sshd_config file.

How can I fix this? I can not login the server anymore, however I am going to the datacenter tomorrow.

OS: CentOS
Installed firewall / protection: APF + BFD
Control Panel: Direct Admin
