What Percentage Of Webmasters Are Using Dedicated Services

Jul 29, 2008

what percentage of clients are interested in buying dedicated web hosting plans instead of shared ones? I surprised why some people prefer dedicated services with such expensive prices!

I hope someone who sells both type of services can answer my question. For example he/she tells me that his sold dedicated services are %20 and sold shared plans %70, and sold VPS....

Shared Hosting Or Dedicated Hosting Why Some Webmasters Prefer Dedicated Servers

Apr 7, 2009

I use shared web hosting service to get my website online. I'm wondering how many people use dedicated servers or virtual private servers instead and pay from $20 to several hundreds of dollars? Will I face any big problem with shared web hosting package which makes me choose dedicated servers?

Host-it-yourself Or Use Dedicated Hosting Services

Currently I am hosting my web site myself on my PC at home (Jboss+ mysql). Using a dedicated server with the highest spec can cost me a fortune knowing that I've just started my online recruitment business.

Should I just hire good hosting services to do things more professionally or should I keep hosting myself and learn how avoid many downtimes

My Experience With Ultrahosting.com Dedicated Services STAY AWAY FROM IT

Nov 11, 2008

My Experience with Ultrahosting.com Dedicated Services STAY AWAY FROM IT!

I had 3-month experience with ultrahosting.com and I want to share this experience.

if you may have seen the prices are really nice, .. as I thought at glance.

I've ordered my windows dedicated server with Helm control panel.

after 3/4 days I called them and they told me that there is problem with Credit Card or something else... but everything was correct, they told me call them and I called and they told me they'll send me the information .. but after 24hours still nothing! .. I called them again and they told me that they are still waiting for the Helm license request!.

after 5 days (I think) I had the server but I found that the Helm license is only for 100 domains! they told me that the Helm license which is in the order form is for 100 domain (but nothing was written), and if I want Helm unlimited license I've to pay 60$(the helm license in it's web site is 50$ if you purchase directly from Helm )..

ANYWAY YOU SAW OUR PROBLEM AT THE FIRST! ..

NOW .. after 3month .. after having lots of support problem and license and ..
I woke up at the morning and I've got an email with the subject of "your service has been terminated"! ..

TERMINATED! What? .. they told me that we did the ARP Poisoning on their network! and everything is finished !! chating with live sales doesn't helped me so I called the support, but the fun is that the support staff couldn't talk well English (I was wiered!!) and he told me that I've to send email again .. still no response for the email ..my offer is that stay away from ultrahosting .. I decided to start again with Iweb .. but it's really kinda starting again .. cause I'll for sure lose all of my customers who was on the ultrahosting's servers.

they are new to dedicated even thought they are in co-operate with Momentum, they had no help desk in more than 2-month I was sending request to them asking for a help desk. as an experience : we should never work with the guys how has no experience! .. I hope that Iweb can help me. it's better to spend a little (30$) more with Iweb instead of having trouble like this!..

How Many Percentage Of Hosts Out There Do Not Provide Cpanel

May 13, 2008

in my country 99% of web masters do not know what cpanel is!

they hardly have any other way of controling things

they use ssh or telnet or ftp and send a support request

now my question how many percentage of hosting companies in the world do not provide cpanel?

And if you as a host do not provide cpanel how should you expalin that to the client?

Is cpanel really necessary?

Compare Dedicated Server Companies/File Hosting Services

Apr 11, 2008

I own a semi-popular downloads website which I host on one server while the actual files/downloads are hosted on another server. This downloads server is very low-end ( AMD Sempron 3000, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD, CentOS with lighttpd, no control panel, etc.) and is connected via a 100Mbit shared line with a 3300GB bandwidth limit. Originally, I had it on a 10Mbit dedicated unmetered line but I hoped that by upgrading to the 100Mbit, I'd get better burst speeds, faster transfers/downloads, and a bit more bandwidth in general. Well, this doesn't seem to be the case so I'm looking for a new server or file hosting service hopefully on a better and faster network.

Right now, I'm considering the following companies/services:

* Profithost.net - Decent Dedicated server with nice bandwidth
* Redhostservers.com - OK Dedicated server with awesome bandwidth
* Server4you.com - Great Dedicated server with good bandwidth

* File-services.com - Decently priced pure file hosting with OK features
* MegaUpload Business account with Hotlink Quota - Decently priced pure file hosting with nice features

Confusing BlueHost Chat: Server Load = Percentage?

Jun 1, 2009

So... I just had an interesting chat over at BlueHost.

One of my clients' sites has been really sluggish lately, and I'm trying to patch and streamline what I can until we can get them migrated over to something more stable.

Anyway, I was looking over things in cPanel and saw that the Server Load was way in the red zone (over 24 on an 8 CPU box)! So I jumped into their live chat, thinking that was the best way to help bring it to their attention quickly.

Here's what I got instead:

Travis [10:13:19 AM]: box439's Server Load is skyrocketing -- in just the past three minutes it has gone from 21.24 (8 cpus) up to 34.12! Even now, it's "stabilizing" at 25 (which is WAY too much for an 8 cpu server).

Brent [10:13:46 AM]: actually, it's not. It's a percentage.
[10:13:52 AM]: 25% of the load
Travis [10:14:03 AM]: No, it's not. 25 = 25cpu equivalent.
Brent [10:14:32 AM]: no, really, it is.
Travis [10:15:24 AM]: Brent, anything over 8.5 generates the "red exclamation mark" icon on the server status page
Brent [10:16:13 AM]: yes it doesn, but it doesn't mean there is an overload
Travis [10:17:06 AM]: ((BlueHost's Server Status page)) says, "2009-06-01 09:10:45: Box under heavy load -- you may experience degraded system performance"
Brent [10:17:39 AM]: i didn't say it wasn't under a heavy load. I was trying ot explain more of what that server cpu item means
Travis [10:18:25 AM]: from ((url)): "At this time of writing, red light is shown for the server loads where the numbers are 18.12 (8cpus). This means there are 18.12 processes in queue - which is over 2 times of CPU capacity."
Brent [10:18:49 AM]: that information is not correct, as we have modified the way our servers display the cpu.

[10:23:32 AM]: I apologize, but it seems you've stepped away. Due to other customers awaiting assistance I am going to have to end this chat. If you have additional questions, we are here for you at all times. Thank you for trying our Live Chat! If you have additional questions, many answers can be found through our Knowledgebase. If you have other issues arise please let us know over live chat or give our Ticket Center a try. Remember our World Class Support is just a click away!

So I'm wondering whether he was completely BS-ing me, or if BlueHost really did modify that output. (And if it's the latter, then why would 25% CPU usage bring the server to a slow crawl?)

DNs Services

Dec 21, 2008

I own around 50 domains.

for the Past 5 years I've been using a VPS with cPanel to point an A record to the IP instead of using the other (shared, resseller and other VPS) IPs or public DNS.

I'm looking for a similar service, that can provide:

- my own DNS (or the hability to point my DNS to the IP)

- can add A, PTR, rDNS records

- less than 20$ month for 50 domains

Anyone know a service like that that recommend?

Connecting Several Services Together,

May 9, 2009

I've purchased a NL Master reseller (about to purchase one in the US) and then a small VPS to see what more I could do, after transferring my site over to the VPS from the NL server I thought I'd come up with the idea with selling master reseller accounts, (both from NL and US master reseller services) the reason I came up with is because the VPS isn't to large to really do anything but seems perfect to keep a database, payment portal, WHMCS, my site, and hopefully all of my client information. What i want to do is somehow connect all 3 together so that when i do create a new client in LxAdmin I can select witch server I want to create it on and what package/permissions and what not, all from the VPS.

Example: LxAdmin -> create client -> fills out form basically similar that to the one in WHM

Resellers/VPS run CentOS Linux
WHM: 11.24.2
cPanel: 11.24.4-R35075
CENTOS 5.2 i686 virtuozzo

So basic question, is all this possible ? this including domains/email/ftp/ect.

Outsource All Web Services

Jan 21, 2009

I wanted to know if there is a provider that will host our sites and provide site maintence all in one package(EX: any changes we want to the website they can do it). We are trying to move away from having multiple hosts and resellers from our multiple sites for our hosting and site maintenance. Alot of companies out there just do the hosting and suggest to get a third party to provide the site maintenance. Basically we want the ability to change anything on our website but have someone who knows what they are doing and do it for us and not take forever to implement changes to the website.

Services And Optimization

Jul 25, 2009

I am switching from shared hosting to managed VPS. I have minimal knowledge of UNIX/Apache, pretty good with PHP and programming in general.

So, what I have now is my VPS, with 512mb of ram, CentOS, cpanel and my two sites, not live yet, that is, I haven't changed dns records in the registrar.

I want to try to optimize the box or whatever is the correct name for it and understand the whole thing better. Mainly to learn more, I dot' think I'll be pressed for memory or bandwidth for now. Still, at least knowing things I can optimize for speed of space.

Few things that I assume should allow for some simplification and RAM savings(hopefully) is that:

a) Both sites are hobby sites, not very big load. Few thousand visitors a day. Traffic is around 10gb monthly combined.

b) Both sites are mine, nobody else on that box, so I don't have to worry about customers screwing things up and caging things internally.

Based on that, I don't really need email for the second site domain.

When I run top command I see 2 exim processes running. Is that normal, or is it because I have 2 domains registered there? And if yes can one be disabled?

Same applies to pop3-login and imap-login processes, 2 copies of each. Can I have just one of each, i.e. exim, pop3-login and imap-login?

Next, I selected not to run log analyzer cpanellogd for 21 hours, i.e. it'll run for 3 hours a day. I assume that should be sufficient for the site like mine?

I did read sticky about securing the site and quite a bit about Apache/mysql optimizations.

what free DNS hosting service to use? So far I have had experience with the following services:

Xname.org - fine, admin-wise kind of DNS zone management. Con: it is relatively often offline (DoS/whatever0

EditDns.net - fine, but it has several times rolled abck their DB state, wiping out my records. I can't name that a rliable service.

EveryDns.net - fine, quick, easy to manage. Con: I have tried to donate, to have limits removed, but my donation was never recorded, all the attempts to contact the administration failed, as well.

I know that stuff happens and machines do go down etc. but I need to know how if possible a decent isp would be able to work around this, should they have a standby server, could they intercept/redirect incoming emails even though the account was down.

I'm not very technical but these are the questions I need to ask any prospective isp's

Flux Services

Feb 25, 2008

Every month, I pay my invoice and everything is fine but in Febuary, after I paid it, I received a ''Payment reminder'' and I was a bit surprised but I replied explaining it was already paid and gave the paypal transaction ID #. I received an apology and they said it was fixed. A week later (or so), I received the a ''reminder #2''. I replied the same thing and the girl at the billing service aplogied and assured me that the invoice was now marked as paid and it shouldn't happen anymore.

This morning I got a ''Last reminder'' (15 days overdue). I sent the same informations again but now my website is disabled.

Am I alone in this situation or is it a known issue with Flux services or anything? I find a bit ridiculous, to be honest, to have a such issue about an invoice that IS paid and confirmed by them as paid but having the system send me reminder over and over and having, subsequently, them disabling my website.

Translation Services

May 21, 2008

I am interested in blocking translation services from accessing my site, such as Google Translate and Yahoo Babelfish.

Google's translation tool adheres to a nice meta tag, so that's taken care of, but Yahoo doesn't appear to do so. The way they work is akin to a proxy, using the IP address of the user, and they don't use a standard referrer, so I can't do a referrer or IP block.

Services.exe 100% CPU Usage

May 18, 2007

I have a Gbit server, Windows 2003 as the OS.
The server is primarily an FTP server, however once or twice a week I use it as a HTTP server as well.

During both FTP and HTTP usage the bandwidth usage is between 80-150 Mbits. However the server just becomes unstable if too much bandwidth is pushed out.

CPU usage is normally below 10% However when the server becomes unstable services.exe maxes out one CPU core. when that happens the server can barely push out 1-2 Mbits.

There are no blue screens or error reports, the only thing that is affected is the network side of things.

Initially I thought it was a problem with IIS, so I tried Apache instead but same problem. Even without the FTP server, if traffic goes too high with HTTP the server just crumbles.

Specs are as follows :

Core2duo 1.86 Ghz
2 GB RAM (Nearly always 1 GB free)
Windows 2003 Ent Edition

Clientexec Services

I'm setting up clientexec for my hosting service and was wondering if "services" are necessary for auto billing. Services are located under Admin/plugins/services. As of right now, I recieve the following error:

"NOTICE: Crontab is not available in your system or you don't have permission to use it. Therefore, you must enable the plugins you wish to use, and manually enter through your hosting control panel its correspondent cron job."

If they are not necessary for clientexec to bill my customers then I will not use them. I'm running cpanel 11.11.0-STABLE. I hope one of you has some info regarding my situation.

When Services Are Down, Notify Me

Aug 28, 2007

What is the best way to get notified if a service has issues. I know I get emails from cpanel if a service fails, but for some reason for mail, it shows ipmap/pop is up but email is not being delivered.

I usually reset IMAP Server, Mail Server (Exim) and POP3 Server then everything seems to kick in and any undelivered mail gets delivered.

What logs can i check so find the issues, and also is the some type of listener i can use to notify me when there are issues with the mail server?
