Dedicated Server Planning
Jan 22, 2008I have never had a dedicated server before.
After lets say 1 year with server provider - do they give me some upgrade for example more RAM, bandwidth or I am going to have to swith to another server plan or provider?
If I do not do anything am I stuck with the same server and they charge me the same amount/month?
How is done generally with most providers?
What should I watch out for?
Planning New Site With Newsletters
May 23, 2007I'm planning a new site. If everything goes ok, with the offline promotion it will have, I'm sure it will have thousands of people registered during this year. I think at first I'll have a good hosting or shared server to see how it works there.
My problem is to find a good solution to deliver weekly newsletters to the registered users. I'm looking for a solution that can work where the site is hosted, but I find that almost all the hosting have limits on mail sending (example, 200 mails per hour) and I would like that the registered users receive the mails in just a few hours as max time.
Today I found this script http://activecampaign.com/12all/ and I don't know if it would help me. I think yes, but the limit on the hosting will still be there. What happens if I get a shared server? Will I still have problems with emails or I would have more liberty?
I also saw those solutions that offers other enterprises to solve the emails problem (like Sitepoint uses for newsletters). One of them is Constant Contact.
I would like a solution from the beginning that works no matter how big became my database of registered users.
All of this also make me wonder if I should plan the site using .NET or PHP (for example, if I consider a solution from another enterprise to send newsletters, it would be the same maybe, but if not, I should consider a script solution compatible with each platform).
I also wonder, how do all medium to medium-big sites send their newsletters almost instantly? (For example, if you have to send important news that needs to reach all the users in time, no 6 hours later because of mail limits, how they do that? If I have a shared server or my own server I would still have the problem of emails limit?)
I wrote some time ago to an enterprise of marketing email, and they told (don't know if it is true) that they have agreements with other enterprises to avoid detect their mails as spam.
Planning To Open A Site Like Rapidshare

VPS Capacity
Dec 22, 2008This is my first post here, though I've been an occasional reader for a long time.
I currently have a VPS at Godaddy, plus shared hosting at Godaddy, 1and1, and Namecheap.
I'm very unhappy with Godaddy, and not terribly thrilled with 1and1. Also, I want to consolidate my sites.
I have appx. 25 sites, with plans for another 20-25. Most are either WP blogs, or static informational sites (using Xsitepro). Most are low-volume (appx. 100 visitors/day). A few, maybe 5, are low-medium volume (a few hundred visitors/day).
The sites are pretty basic, mostly Adsense, affiliate sales, and the like. No streaming anything except the occasional video clip.
I'm considering Futurehost's current offer for 50% off lifetime on their Titanium package w/ cPanel. This provides 1Gb RAM. Any reason to think this would not be adequate for my current and future plans (currently appx. 25 sites, going up to 50 within 12 months)?
I'm pretty sure bandwidth will be way more than adequate, I'm just wondering if a 1Gb VPS will be enough for all my sites.
Backup Capacity
Apr 1, 2009A question about backups:
So, we have a dedicated server with 2 x 146GB SAS HDD Hot Plug (max 4-6) and running WHM/cPanel
the two disks are in RAID.
Noticed, cpanel wasn't making backups, so apparently we need to install additional disks for it to start to do so. cpanel makes 3 backups - daily, weekly, monthly; home directory is set to around 100GB. So does that mean we would need to put in two additional SAS disks per server just to manage backups or does anyone have other experience how this is best dealt with?

Jun 11, 2008I am trying to develop plans for my small 'datacenter'. My Question is how many shared hosting users (sites) can be on one server. While this question is broad, please assume a general distribution of users (sites) and the following server configuration (and lets ignore the datacenter network/uplink for the meoment):
Xeon Quad Core 5410 processor
8 GB RAM
Windows 2003 or 2008 Server O/S
How about if a mySQL database is added (to the same server?)
I recently started looking at some of the panel systems and it seems that a typical configuration is 'all-in-one', that is a Web Server, Database and email server - do these perform well?
Is there any rule of thumb for Windows servers such as zz MB Ram per user; # of users per processor; # of user per processor core?
Server Specs / Capacity
Jan 9, 2007I would like some advice and to see if this is a good approach to setup a server / web business.
The idea is to start off providing very basic web hosting functionality for smaller sites.
I was thinking about purchasing two similar or identical servers (RAID1 disks) + server fully mirrored.
In case 1 falls out the 2nd one takes over. DNS services is at startup located on other servers in the DC.
If this works out then I'd be looking at increasing servers with clusters or LVS.
I'm having a very hard time finding resources and information of the load and server capacity.
I was thinking about a system like this:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 , RAID 1 SATA disks (preferrably Raptor), 2 GB of RAM.
This would then be running LAMP. I would limit the traffic to 5-10GB transfer / month per account.
(most account would not nearly get up to this figure).
Is there a ballpark figure at about how many web sites this server could handle ?
Are we talking about 50 ? 20 ? 100 ?
Where To Go When Shared Hosting Capacity Runs Out
Jan 20, 2008I have a website currently hosted on a Godaddy shared hosting plan.
Visitors to the site have reported getting "Service Unavailable" messages at times. When I talked to Godaddy about this, they say I am exceeding the limits they put on simultaneous page requests (or something to that effect). For my plan this limit is set at 100.
I upgraded to their highest shared hosting plan, and this limit now goes up to 150 simultaneous requests. This will probably solve the problem for a while, but I think the site will grow enough to have a problem at 150, and I need to figure out what to do when this happens.
The site currently gets about 4800 visitors a day, and uses around 5 gb of bandwidth per day.

Questions:
- Am I likely to find a shared hosting plan that is better on this limit than Godaddy?
- Is the site getting large enough that some form of virtual dedicated server or dedicated server is going to be necessary?
- Godaddy offers virtual dedicated servers, and dedicated servers. I wonder what I would need to go to solve the problem, and provide some capacity margin for growth?
Is the lowest level of virtual dedicated server really going to provide any better performance than the shared hosting plan I have now? Godaddy was not very helpful on answering these questions.
- Any recommendations for virtual dedicated server or dedicated server outfits that are good?
Sorry about so many questions on my first post. Wish I knew more about this whole hosting thing.
Increasing Server Capacity / CPanel
Apr 13, 2008I'm trying to start a website on a shoestring budget, but my programmer and host want to squeeze more out of us. We currently have a Custom VPS, w/cPanel and WHM. Everytime I try to upload a file(s) more than 10 mb, it will not go thru. My programmer told me to ask the server to increase capacity, they tell me it will cost me. My programmer says the same thing. Now if my programmer can do it, I assume it will be done through cPanel. Is there anyway I can do it myself, so for example, a file of lets say 25 mb will get uploaded? I have access to my cPanel.

1000 visitors a day for example.
Perhaps 5 page views a vistor and each site having a VBulletin as a sub-domain.
Would it be best to run them all off one dedicated server or each site just off a small hosting plan?
For organizational purposes it seems the dedicated server would be the way to go?

Huge Capacity Windows 2003 Server
Jan 6, 2008I have a request to built a standard 32 bit Windows 2003 server as big as possible using standard parts. I am thinking if i use 750GB x 4 Raid 5, that will give me 2.1TB of usable space. Is there any limitations or bottlenecks I should be wary about?

DNS Services Goes Down
Oct 29, 2009I am using Plesk 9.2 with windows 2008 server and all of the sudden our DNS services goes down every other 2nd and 3rd day and we have to restart the dns services every time to bring it up, it doesnt even show any error message under windows event.

I'm looking for a similar service, that can provide:
- my own DNS (or the hability to point my DNS to the IP)
- can add A, PTR, rDNS records
- less than 20$ month for 50 domains
Anyone know a service like that that recommend?

May 9, 2009I've purchased a NL Master reseller (about to purchase one in the US) and then a small VPS to see what more I could do, after transferring my site over to the VPS from the NL server I thought I'd come up with the idea with selling master reseller accounts, (both from NL and US master reseller services) the reason I came up with is because the VPS isn't to large to really do anything but seems perfect to keep a database, payment portal, WHMCS, my site, and hopefully all of my client information. What i want to do is somehow connect all 3 together so that when i do create a new client in LxAdmin I can select witch server I want to create it on and what package/permissions and what not, all from the VPS.
Example: LxAdmin -> create client -> fills out form basically similar that to the one in WHM

Jan 21, 2009I wanted to know if there is a provider that will host our sites and provide site maintence all in one package(EX: any changes we want to the website they can do it). We are trying to move away from having multiple hosts and resellers from our multiple sites for our hosting and site maintenance. Alot of companies out there just do the hosting and suggest to get a third party to provide the site maintenance. Basically we want the ability to change anything on our website but have someone who knows what they are doing and do it for us and not take forever to implement changes to the website.

Jul 25, 2009I am switching from shared hosting to managed VPS. I have minimal knowledge of UNIX/Apache, pretty good with PHP and programming in general.
So, what I have now is my VPS, with 512mb of ram, CentOS, cpanel and my two sites, not live yet, that is, I haven't changed dns records in the registrar.
I want to try to optimize the box or whatever is the correct name for it and understand the whole thing better. Mainly to learn more, I dot' think I'll be pressed for memory or bandwidth for now. Still, at least knowing things I can optimize for speed of space.
Few things that I assume should allow for some simplification and RAM savings(hopefully) is that:
a) Both sites are hobby sites, not very big load. Few thousand visitors a day. Traffic is around 10gb monthly combined.
b) Both sites are mine, nobody else on that box, so I don't have to worry about customers screwing things up and caging things internally.
Based on that, I don't really need email for the second site domain.
When I run top command I see 2 exim processes running. Is that normal, or is it because I have 2 domains registered there? And if yes can one be disabled?
Same applies to pop3-login and imap-login processes, 2 copies of each. Can I have just one of each, i.e. exim, pop3-login and imap-login?
Next, I selected not to run log analyzer cpanellogd for 21 hours, i.e. it'll run for 3 hours a day. I assume that should be sufficient for the site like mine?
I did read sticky about securing the site and quite a bit about Apache/mysql optimizations.
Can't Access Services From Within LAN
Dec 12, 2008I am having trouble accessing any kind of services on one computer from another computer on my LAN.
I can ping toher computers and access windows file sharing but if I run any kind of server like apache or Dorgem(webcam) I can't access it from any other computer on the LAN..I've tried changing the ports etc but to no avail..
I am not the amin of this network but is there anything else I can do on my end to get things working..?
Is this a common occurence, for admins to stop this traffic?

Xname.org - fine, admin-wise kind of DNS zone management. Con: it is relatively often offline (DoS/whatever0
EditDns.net - fine, but it has several times rolled abck their DB state, wiping out my records. I can't name that a rliable service.
EveryDns.net - fine, quick, easy to manage. Con: I have tried to donate, to have limits removed, but my donation was never recorded, all the attempts to contact the administration failed, as well.
Email Services
Nov 4, 2008This kinda follows on from a prev thread about advice on finding another isp.
My (soon to be ex) isp had email outage for over 3 days, I lost emails which means losing business and I don't want to be in this situation ever again.
I know that stuff happens and machines do go down etc. but I need to know how if possible a decent isp would be able to work around this, should they have a standby server, could they intercept/redirect incoming emails even though the account was down.
I'm not very technical but these are the questions I need to ask any prospective isp's
