Hosting Using Amazon Web Services EC2

Jan 21, 2009

Has anyone looked into hosting on Amazon Web Services EC2? It seems to me that a Elastic Compute Cloud node would be a far better solution than a VPS or a dedicated server.

Amazon Cloud Services

Aug 4, 2008

I've visited their web site (aws.amazon.com), but it seems kind of vague to me. Is AWS the same as S3? (which one does web hosting?) You can host web sites on Amazon's service, right? Do you get the usual stuff? (mySQL, PHP, etc) Do they offer SFTP? Shell access?

Man, I feel like they need a FAQ or a list of features. How come none of these things are mentioned on their site?

Media Hosting/Amazon S3

Feb 1, 2008

we recently launched a site that has a you-tubeish clone to it, none the less the media progressive download bottlenecks the the rest of the sites functions beyond video...

I've been looking into solutions with moving the files elsewhere.

I was looking at Lime Light Networks but they were $1/gig, granted i'm sure their service is great but we're currently moving 3tb and have been going up around 500gb every month. So we really can't afford that.

I just stumbled on Amazon S3 and that looks real attractive, has anybody used their services or know of a site that does that I could test it out.

And the last stupid question, I'm trying to figure out how it works, they make it sound like all you have to do is put a CNAME in your zone, but I need the video clips to be put there as they're uploaded...

Using Amazon S3 To Offset Hosting Costs

Jul 9, 2008

Just curious if anyone has some case studies/feedback regarding using Amazon S3 (or similar) services as a way to offset hosting needs and costs.

By that I mean being able to use a lower config server or less bandwidth because media/content is hosted on Amazon servers.

Yahoo Web Hosting - Big Name Worst Services

Jul 15, 2008

I bought a hosting package from Yahoo Small Business India.

Initially i was happy because the package was cheap and had good features. Database was easily set up I installed php admin tool also with one click install. No other packages are available. One has to manually upload and install.

I tried to upload phpbb but i wasn't able to upload some files. I emailed them and asked why the server gives an error while uploading .htaccess files, the reply was we don't support it. I uploaded it without .htaccess and installed it. I installed wordpess and wanted to have clean URLs but yahoo does not support mod rewrite. I don’t know much about php and databases.

9th July 2008: While I was learning I modified some tables due to which my database administrator permissions were lost. I was able to login using phpadmin but unable to create new databases and modify previously created databases and tables. I emailed customer care regarding the problem and got a useless reply on 10th July that I should change the password of the database administrator.

I changed the password but the problem was not resolved. On 11th I again emailed the problem in detail with screenshots to the customer care. On 12th, I got a reply “we have forwarded this issue to the technical team and we will inform you once this issue is resolved.”

On 12th I emailed to ask when the problem will be resolved but got no reply from them. Till date (15th July) the problem is not resolved. No one even wants to reply to emails.

See below my emails and replies given by yahoo customer care:

My email to yahoo customer care on 9th July:

I have some problem with database. By mistake i modified my original user name which i created while setting up the database. Now i can't access the tables that were created with previous user name. When i log in using phpadmin and try to see any tables i get the message. Access denied. Moreover, I also cannot create any new tables. I have NOT modified the yroot user;. Can it be recovered.
Please help.

My email to yahoo customer care on 10th July:

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply. I have already done that from database administrator link but the problem is not resolved. This problem has started since yesterday because of my mistake. I modified the original database administrator "user name" from the database "mysql". After modification all my permissions have lost. I have not modified the yroot user. So can you grant the administrator permissions to new user The problem is that after logging in using phpadmin i don't have permission to create a new database. The databases and tables that I created earlier are also not available to me. I am also attaching the screenshot (.gif) of what error i am getting. When i click any database in phpadmin i get the following message:

SQL query:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `wpress` ;
MySQL said:#1044 - Access denied for user to database 'wpress'

If there is no solution then please reset the database, so that MySQL database can be set up again.
Regards,
(Vinay Chhabra)

How Can I Evaluate The Services Of My Hosting Provider

May 12, 2008

I have a managed dedicated server in England, but I have no idea about the quality of services I get from the person that does the management of my server.

Unfortunately I do not have the technical knowledge to evaluate it by myself. The server looks fast but I am not sure whether it is optimised for security, protection from spammers, etc.

Is there a way to find out if everything has been setup in the best possible way? Can this be done without giving access to the server?

Medialayer Hosting - Amazing Services

I shifted my website universalteacher.com from yahoo to Medialayer in July 2008 because yahoo has a very bad customer support. You can read my review about yahoo here:

The support provided by medialayer is excellent. Whenever I contact them, they reply within 1 hour. Mostly I have got reply within 15 minutes. The executives are knowledgeable and very helpful.

I am located in India and Medialayer is in US. I always contact them in odd hours. Please see the following query that I asked when I was testing wordpress MU on one of my sites at 6:13 AM and i got the reply at 6:26 AM. The second query i asked at 12:40 PM and got reply at 12:48 PM ....

VpsLand - EX-brillant Hosting Services

Apr 21, 2008

I've had a VPS from vpsland.com for a while now, but for the past week the services I've recieved are absolutely abysmal.

My server just went *off* - no clue, no trace. Then after repeated requests the server comes online, and just BARELY. All my websites, and the control panel (plesk) are offline. In fact even the virtuozzo control panel (on port 4643) is offline.

No credit, no apologies, nothing. Quite ridiculous.

I'll be shifting elsewhere. Any suggestions? I need a VPS around $50 a month - excellent services necessary.

Cloud Hosting And Amazons Web Services

Dec 30, 2008

hosting company that will allow me to expand as much as I like in terms of RAM, Storage and Bandwidth without having to move from a dedicated server to another dedicated server each time.

I guess the answer is something like Amazons Web Services (AWS). However, I haven't heard great things about them, but I wanted to know what everyone thought of them and any other similar cloud services that is more affordable and reliable.

Compare Dedicated Server Companies/File Hosting Services

Apr 11, 2008

I own a semi-popular downloads website which I host on one server while the actual files/downloads are hosted on another server. This downloads server is very low-end ( AMD Sempron 3000, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD, CentOS with lighttpd, no control panel, etc.) and is connected via a 100Mbit shared line with a 3300GB bandwidth limit. Originally, I had it on a 10Mbit dedicated unmetered line but I hoped that by upgrading to the 100Mbit, I'd get better burst speeds, faster transfers/downloads, and a bit more bandwidth in general. Well, this doesn't seem to be the case so I'm looking for a new server or file hosting service hopefully on a better and faster network.

Right now, I'm considering the following companies/services:

* Profithost.net - Decent Dedicated server with nice bandwidth
* Redhostservers.com - OK Dedicated server with awesome bandwidth
* Server4you.com - Great Dedicated server with good bandwidth

* File-services.com - Decently priced pure file hosting with OK features
* MegaUpload Business account with Hotlink Quota - Decently priced pure file hosting with nice features

Amazon EC2

Apr 21, 2009

Anyone ever use this service? I had an issue with tons of spam being sent to my mail servers from amazon, so I placed an IP ban on the entire Amazon network until the issue was fixed. They replied and said that it was coming from an Amazon EC2 client and that it was handled...made me kind of curious about it.

DS Plans Vs. Amazon EC2

Oct 25, 2009

My services/sites approached the state when DS becomes a must. Currently I have a DS with Server Logix (and am quite satisfied with it, to add), but I suppose I'll need another DS in the foreseeable future, to transfer most active sites there.

Amazon EC2 service offers several types of 'elastic' servers. The smallest one, citing the product page::

1.7 GB of memory, 1 EC2 Compute Unit (equals 1.0-1.2 GHz 2007 Opteron or 2007 Xeon processor), 160 GB of instance storage, 32-bit platform

If run for a month, this instance would cost me 72$. Traffic (bandwidth) is paid for separately; I estimate I'd pay approx $20 monthly for traffic consumed.

The question: are there DS plans matching the EC2 Small instance (i.e., 100$ monthly for the server of similar configuration, with 120Gb of traffic included)?

I have tried the EC2 hosting, to test its efficiency and availability. I should decide, whether to switch entirely to cloud providers, or there are traditional DS hosting that could beat EC2 prices and offer good reliability?

All the comments on EC2 experience and DS providers would be very welcome.

I am interested in USA or Europe-based DS hosting providers, if any. I'd need a server in approx 3-4 months.

Upgrade To Amazon EC2

Apr 14, 2008

Signed up but never really had chance to play with Amazon's EC2. This looks interesting though - non-persistent storage was one of the major downside's of EC2 -

--------
Many Amazon EC2 customers have been requesting that we let them know ahead of time about features that are currently under development so that they can better plan for how that functionality might integrate with their applications. To that end, we would like to share some details about a major upcoming feature that many of you have requested - persistent storage for EC2.

This new feature provides reliable, persistent storage volumes, for use with Amazon EC2 instances. These volumes exist independently from any Amazon EC2 instances, and will behave like raw, unformatted hard drives or block devices, which may then be formatted and configured based on the needs of your application. The volumes will be significantly more durable than the local disks within an Amazon EC2 instance. Additionally, our persistent storage feature will enable you to automatically create snapshots of your volumes and back them up to Amazon S3 for even greater reliability.

You will be able to create volumes ranging in size from 1 GB to 1 TB, and will be able to attach multiple volumes to a single instance. Volumes are designed for high throughput, low latency access from Amazon EC2, and can be attached to any running EC2 instance where they will show up as a device inside of the instance. This feature will make it even easier to run everything from relational databases to distributed file systems to Hadoop processing clusters using Amazon EC2.

When persistent storage is launched, Amazon EC2 will be adding several new APIs to support the persistent storage feature. Included will be calls to manage your volume (CreateVolume, DeleteVolume), mount your volume to your instance (AttachVolume, DetachVolume) and save snapshots to Amazon S3 (CreateSnapshot, DeleteSnapshot).

Thoughts On Amazon AWS

May 8, 2008

Are the amazon's EC2/S3 solutions a viable alternative to dedicated hosting? The thought of capacity/bandwidth/computing power on demand sounds great in theory. Could it host a basic LAMP setup?

If you've done any research in this area i'd love to hear your thoughts. Are they apples and oranges?

Amazon EC2 Or Other Cloud Platform?

Dec 28, 2008

I have a new comparison shopping site. The challenge I currently have is that I have a dedicated server on Hostgator ($374 per month). But, I am in the middle of changing programmers after initial problems. While we are working through issues, I would like to bring down costs (there is very little traffic on the site right now).

Does a service such as Amazon EC2 make sense? It is not that I am unhappy with Hostgator. I just want to reduce cost while we fix the site (could take several months), and, position the site for easy growth (which is why I am considering Cloud Computing).

Comparison shopping is a large database intensive effort, so I do not think that a simple "shared" service makes sense.

Amazon S3 For A File Host
