Slow Server-to-server FTP'ing On Windows
I have a number of dedicated servers at different hosting companies, all with 100mbps burstable ports, using several versions of Windows (2003 or 2008, Standard or Enterprise).
I've tried setting up FTP servers (the one that is part of IIS) on 4 of them, to transfer files between the servers. But, I can't get a single transfer to go faster than about 10-12Mbps. If I upload multiple files, each will go at right around 10-12Mbps (so I can get, say, ~50Mbps if transferring 5 files simultaneously). I've tried passive FTP, and I've tried tweaking the TCP settings (TcpWindowSize, GlobalTcpWindowSize, Tcp1323Opts), and the results are the same.

Server Very Slow, But Server Load Is Near Zero
I'm having trouble with a new server. It's a dedicated (Q6600 + 8 gig RAM + 4 x 250gig in Raid 10 + Centos 5.3 64bit + Cpanel). The machine is way overpowered for the traffic going to the site. The server load is rarely above .10 and often closer to zero. I'm getting periodic extreme slow downs. Web pages will take 30-60 seconds to load (or longer). SSH will timeout, or if I can connect, it will take seconds (sometimes 10-15 seconds) for key press to register in the SSH terminal. Pop3 times out, etc. This might last for 15 minutes or 3-4 hours. Then, everything will start running like a champ again. Traceroutes to the server during the slow downs haven't shown a problem between the server and where I am testing from (have connected from multiple proxies and remote sites to eliminate my local internet connection). I'm looking for any advice on how to trouble shoot this. Hardware? Software? Configuration issue? It is definitely not a capacity/load issue. There have been no spikes in web traffic. The opposite, this is a very slow time for my site, which is why I moved to a new server in May.

Server Network Very Slow
problem with my server running CentOS 5.3. I noticed that there are huge pings to my server from time to time, example: ------------------ 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=0 ttl=60 time=2.93 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=1 ttl=60 time=2.70 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=2 ttl=60 time=1901 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=3 ttl=60 time=899 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=5 ttl=60 time=2.69 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=6 ttl=60 time=2.62 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=4 ttl=60 time=2132 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=8 ttl=60 time=2.57 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=7 ttl=60 time=1190 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=10 ttl=60 time=2.65 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=9 ttl=60 time=1048 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=12 ttl=60 time=2.74 ms 64 bytes from HOSTNAME (server-IP): icmp_seq=11 ttl=60 time=1205 ms ------------------ First I thought that it is network related, but most strange for me was that I did not have any packets lose. Then I tried to ping from my server to other hosts - situation was the same - some ping were good and some were huge (700ms, 800ms, even 2000ms) I checked: cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max and it was 65536 Then I checked: cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_count and it was ~1600 so normal. dmesg was showing such errors: conntrack_ftp: partial 227 3331059707+13 Then I checked ifconfig, here is the output: ------------------ eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:21:57:2B:6F inet addr:MAIN=IP Bcast:BCAST=IP Mask:255.255.255.192 inet6 addr: fe80::224:21ff:fe57:2b6f/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:170557113 errors:0 dropped:2421127049 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:182047660 errors:0 dropped:46 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:2756835074 (2.5 GiB) TX bytes:79640621 (75.9 MiB) Interrupt:82 Base address:0xe000 ------------------ Strange for me was: RX packets [...] dropped:2421127049 TX packets [...] dropped:46 I did not have such dropped information on all my other servers. Dropped counter for RX was constatnly increasing. So I decided to restart all services on the server. After restarting network and ipaliases - problem disappeared. RX dropped counter is still rising, but I do not have any slowdowns on the server and pings are normal. My question is - does anyone could have any idea what can casue my problem and how can I prevent this in the future?

Midphase Server Frustratingly Slow

Slow Response Time From Server ...
I have a dedicated server that I am renting that appears to randomly respond very slowly for some reason (pings are between 90-4000ms with about 75% packet loss). This has been happening lately (about once a week for the past 4 weeks) and I thought I had originally found the cause of the problem but it appears I haven't. Originally, when this problem was happening we were getting an abnormally high about of traffic but a reboot always fixed the issue. I've checked every where I can think of but I cannot find anything out of the ordinary. ight now we're averaging less than 2Mbps in traffic, the CPU load is less than 0.75, the memory usage is at 55% with no swap being used, Apache connections are normal, no active SSH, FTP, or mail connections, I've restarted all services which had no impact, I've checked the access and error logs but can't see anything out of the ordinary. I have a ticket open with the data center but I'm trying to figure this out on my own to fix whatever is causing this so I can move my data over to a new server we just got setup over the weekend in a local data center.

Slow Server Response Time ....
I recently made a shift to FDC for one of my servers that I use for downloadable content. I went for a $199 server with a 100mbps shared bandwidth port. Now, the only problem I seem to be having with it is that downloads appear to be, I would say recognized, very slowly by the server before they start, however, once the download starts I get a full speed. This usually happens during peak times. I'm using about 10/15mbps on the server according to my cPanel statistics. I just wanted to ask here prior to contacting FDC on this, whether this slow server response time has something to do with the bandwidth port, or perhaps the server's RAM, CPU, etc? Given I'm using quite minimal bandwidth on the port, should I consider having them fix this or upgrade the server instead? And if I had to upgrade, would I need to upgrade the port or the RAM, or both for this?

My Server Works Slow But It's Ok Of Memory

Which extra parameters might I check?

Slow Server - DoS Attack
My server (Xeon 3.0Ghz) went down for no reason yesterday and ever since it was rebooted (and I've rebooted a couple of times since then), pages load extremely slowly or just timeout. Server load is constantly hovering around 1 and top stats indicate that the server's resources are not under heavy load, which is contrary to the usual pattern during peak times. I've checked netstat and I notice a lot of SYN_RECV. Could this be a DoS attack? If so, what steps do I take to stop it?

Slow Virtual Private Server (VPS)
The subject line pretty much sums up my major problem. My site has been intermittently slow (somtimes slow, sometimes not) for... like since I can remember. So my site isn't that big Sometimes for me it takes forever to load a vbulletin page, or even the main page of the site. I thought I had found the problem (a mysql-intensive script), removed it, improved things quite a bit, but there is still a long way to go! Many site users report the same exact things. "The site is sloowww" ... "It wasn't slow yesterday but it is today" ... "Today it's really fast, but last week I was having problems pulling up pages". Its fustrating becase this is a VPS, and although I know how to use Cpanel, WHM is really big and I am not sure what I could do to speed up my website or to even begin to locate any potential problems. My site is basically Joomla CMS, vBulletin BBS and 4images image gallery. The later two use a common user database. My current mysql usage is 327.55MB in total. Apache 1.3.34, PHP 4.4.1 and MySQL 4.1.19-standard. Powered by WHM/Cpanel & Virtuozzo. What should I do? Where can I start? Where can I look?

High Server Load And Slow Performance
I am currently hosting my website on one server with the specs: 2.8ghz Dual Quad-Core processor + 8 gigs of ram + two 500 hard drives with a 50 mbps unmetered bandwidth package. My current problem lies in high server loads and very slow server performance throughout the day. I am considering migrating over to The Planet onto server with the specs: 3.0ghz Dual Quad-Core + 18 gigs of ram + two 50gb hard drives with 2TB of monthly bandwidth transfer. In an attempt to have great bandwidth pricing and server performance, I plan on downgrading my current server with my current host to a lowe-end server and keeping it only to host my VIDEO and MUSIC files with the 50mbps unmetered package. The Planet will then host my database and all other web related files on their new server. Is this a good idea as an attempt to save money in bandwidth costs and eliminating my server lag issues? I was offered a setup of a separate web and database server at my current host but from what I have read, no one touches the performance and reliability The Planet has to offer.

My server has a small load (about 30% of it is being used) and it is still running very slow. When I reboot it runs fast for about 5-10 min, and then it is back to slow. I reported this to hivelocity and the responded with " The problem was one of your apache process was pegged out. Restarting apache resolved this issue. If you still have issues check top and run lsof on the process ID that is pegged out." and after it continued "It will continur to happen until you isolate the source of the issue and stop it. The load looked fine just now, so I am not seeing an issue. What you can do is when it pegs out (simply restarting webserver will get it back up but not resolve) run the following command: ps -aux Look through the processes to see what is calling it." Whn I run ps -aux i see a username on my server. i suspended that username but the problem is still happening.

Server Load Is Low But Site Is VERY Slow
My machine is pretty good. Here are the specs: Intel Xeon-Woodcrest 5148-DualCore 3 gigs of ram 250GB Western Digital WD Cavia I run a forum with a modest amount of traffic along with a content management system handling the other sections of the website. I'm pretty sure the forum isn't the problem though. The server load for this machine is almost never above a 1. Right now as I type this the load is at 0.17, but it's unbearably slow! Taking up to 16 seconds to load a single page. What could be causing this? I'm a server n00b. Is there a setting I should be doing to one of my servers configuration files to make it run faster? My website gets 30-40,000 visitors a day and these problems always occur during peak hours. It would be easier to deal with this though if not for the fact that the server load is always so low. How is it possible for the site to get so slow while the server load is always so low?

CPU Load Low, Server Slow, Need More Ram
My server gets 300 - 600 concurrent connections to http port 80, has a CPU load of 1 - 2%, has practically all RAM of 1 GB used, is running apache 2 and centos 5. It tends to get slow and when I ban IPs that use many connections to my server (raping it), it becomes fast again. But soon after that new ******* users come which I again ban and the process repeats itself I'm starting to think that maybe I just don't have enough RAM to handle them because it seems at least some of those users are legit. I don't however have even that much content that needs to be cached so I'm not sure what good RAM would do but perhaps apache just needs more.

SLOW Connection: 2 Webservers Using A Single Database Server
I am developing an application on a load balanced network. Media Server Running Windows Server 2003 Std: Yes Or No
Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Windows VPS Slow Internet Through RDC
With Remote Desktop Connection download/upload speeds seem to be capped to barely anything like 50 KB/s. But going to speedtest.net (still in remote desktop) the server reads like 3600 KB/s. It seems like my host is smartly throttling my connection. Is there any way to get around this?

Windows 2003 Clock Was Right, Now It Slow An Hour
I am running windows 2003, and I patched it with the timezone windows update, everything was fine, but when I looked today, the clock is one hour slow. But when I run my php scripts, it shows the time being correct. I thought php grabbed the time from the system? Perhaps this is just a bug with the clock, and the internal system time is correct? It is the only thing I can think of.

Windows 2003 CPU Irratic + Slow Machine
I run mdaemon mail server and IIS6. Recently the machine started acting real freaking slow and I noticed that mdaemon was taking up 25-50% cpu almost all the time. When browsing through my computer/explorer, it takes a number of seconds (about 5-10) to show all the folders as you drill down any directory tree. Also, when you right click on any folder/set of folders/set of files/individual file, it takes a good 5 seconds for the right click menu to show up. The entire machine is just going butt slow for some reason and I'm at a total loss as to why. Here are a few bits of info regarding how the machine responds to things. If I reboot the machine, its totally fine for a short time... mail takes up the usual 1-5% cpu and all folder browsing is normal and speedy. When the machine does become slow as crap, if I turn off the mail server, the machine still runs super slow, nothing changes really. The folder browsing takes forever still and so does right clicking anything. I've done a full virus scan, and nothing. I'm not sure what else to do, but there are no processes running that are taking up a lot of cpu or ram that might be programs causing problems. Bandwidth is not being eaten up either, its on a T1 and on average does about 5-10GB of total IN/OUT bandwidth and that has not changed. I'm not stupid when it comes to computers, but I'm at a total loss as to what could be causing this.

Windows 2008 Versus Windows 2003 Server
With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box? Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?

Windows Media Server & Web Server
I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?
