What Are The Parameters That You Monitor On A Server/vps Other Than Tcp Services
Oct 26, 2009
What are the parameters, other than the tcp services(http,smtp,ping,dns,mysql), would you monitor on a server/vps to ensure its smooth running(free mem,disk usage,user_beancounter etc...)? if any, what is the monitoring tool/and the plugin that you use?

I need a simple basic server monitoring software that will do usual ports (ping, httpd, pop3, ssl, etc) and also notify me via sms (or email) of high server load (cpanel/whm).
I need something that is NOT nagios (ugly, too complex to setup), zenoss (cannot figure out what on earth to do to setup simple port monitoring, but nice interface).
Must be for linux with mysql 5 / php 5 compatible.

In the past i've read up on software capable of restarting services that go down. I was wondering what the best free option is right now. I've got three dedicated centos boxes that I need to monitor. I don't need to monitor them all from one place, but would like something that can identify processes such as httpd, mysql, and mydns, then restart them if necessary.

Is there any way to dump all of the current configuration parameters that apache is operating with?
I am clear on setting them in apache's config file. What I would like to do is view every parameter apache is operating with.
I am trying to troubleshoot what is believed to be an apache issue on one of my servers.

I've migrated from Apache 2.2 to Apache 2.4 few days ago. It is installed as a service on my Windows 7 developer machine and works in bundle with PHP 5.6.2.
Today I've discovered that GET parameters with Cyrillic characters in URL string are empty.
For example URL looks like this: site.com/search.php?q=%C8%E2%E0%ED%EE%E2
URL-encoded string here is Иванов (%C8%E2%E0%ED%EE%E2)
When I try to use this GET parameter in my PHP script - the variable $_GET['q'] is empty. If I put latin characters in this parameter - $_GET['q'] is taking the corresponding value.
Doesn't look like it's a problem of PHP as I think. Otherwise at least something should stay in the variable. And also I would like to add that this was working absolutely normal on Apache 2.2.

I'm using latest plesk with ubuntu 12.04, apache and nginx, gzip is enabled and working fine, except for JS and CSS files wich have version parameters in the URI, for example :
[URL] ....
here is my conf in /etc/nginx/conf.d/gzip.conf :
Code:
gzip on;
gzip_disable "MSIE [1-6].(?!.*SV1)";
gzip_proxied any;
gzip_types text/plain text/css application/javascript application/x-javascript text/xml application/xml application/xml+rss text/javascript image/x-icon image/bmp image/svg+xml;
gzip_vary on;
Gzip is working fine for every other ressources loaded
I know i can strip these ?ver= using PHP, but if nginx could just enqueue them properly as they are...

Is there any script or program that can ping or load a page from a server on a regular basis to check if the server is still running?
For example using a shared hosting server B to ping dedicated server A to see if A is still running. Else B will send a email to the sys admin. Something along this line.

I've recently found (last 6 weeks) that the performance of my client's websites on my trusted host's servers isn't how it used to be and/or how it should be. The download seems to take way much longer than before. So far it hasn't resulted in a significant drop in average pageviews per unique visitor but it might do if things continue. The host claims a number of attacks on the mailserver and an unusually high load at one point in time. Above all it's just annoying - isn't reliable server performance what can be expected from a reputable host?
Here's the question: what's the best way of monitoring online how the web and mail servers are performing so that I can take this report to my host and urge them to take (more) action? Ideally I'd like to compare this with a seperate web server that I use for another client. I don't mind spending a little bit of money but high subscription fees are not in my budget.

in the direction of a S.M.A.R.T client for Windows Server 2008 that matches as many of the following as possible:
- Lightweight
- Free
- Quite good
I'm not looking for one that hooks into explorer or even runs all the time. Something that runs periodically (shceduled task) and polls information, mailing / popping up an alert if it finds a problem.
Basically something like the smartmontools for Linux / unix.

Does websites uptime monotoring tools and services like for example: pindom, siteuptime or host-tracker can in any way affect the server or vps performance of the website being monitor.
I think that a Monitor service that do a test every 30 minutes dont cause any inpact, but if the interval on check test is every 1 minute.
Can this every minute check affect in any way the performance of a server or vps?

Mirror a site running server 2003 web services
I'm a network admin at a university and one of the departments is hosting their site on their own personal server running Server 2003 and Windows Web services. They've been asking me how would they go about mirroring their site in the event of a power loss intentional or otherwise. There are times during holiday periods where building maintenance will shut off power but they still want students to be able to get to their site. So they want to set up a mirror on another server in an office offsite.
I've done some research on the subject but I haven't been able to find anything dealing with mirroring Microsoft hosted sites.

Just a quick little review here:
Wanted to let you all know that I am very pleased with service I am receiving from Byethost! Many people think of Byet as just a free hosting and paid shared hosting company, but for awhile now I've been leasing a server and management service from them for io3.us and io4.us. I must say I have been very impressed!
I've received lots of personal attention and consulting to help me determine my needs, and also to make sure I end up with the best solution. Byethost has been very flexible in their solutions for me, and I have really appreciated all they've done!
I recently had to upgrade from a VPS to a full dedicated server, and once again Byethost was there to help every step of the way. The upgrade was literally totally seamless.
They ordered the server, configured it, moved everything over, verified everything with me. Nothing was down, not even for a few seconds. Byethost handled it all, and I didn't have to do a thing! That's what I call service. (Plus, from the time I ordered until the time everything was moved from the VPS to the dedicated server and running fine was less than 2 days!)
Previously, I've said HostGator was my number 1 pick for dedicated servers, but I have to change that now. If you're looking for a dedicated server (with or without management servers), I strongly recommend Byethost.com. You will be doing yourself a huge favor, saving a tremendous amount of hassle by choosing Byethost.
I now have a dedicated server and 10 Mbps dedicated line from them, and I couldn't be happier!
