View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have 2 VPSs that I'm monitoring and I noticed that on one of them the memory usage is much higher than the other which doesn't make sense to me. I tracked the high memory usage to the Apache processes.
Here's the overview of the VPSs:
LiquidWeb VPS- 512MB RAM, 10 Sites with minimal usage.
Average httpd process (Owner Priority Cpu% Mem% Command):
nobody 0 0.0 1.2 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start -DSSL
Virpus VPS- 384MB RAM, 61 sites with moderate usage.
Average httpd process (Owner Priority Cpu% Mem% Command):
nobody 0 0.0 0.3 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start -DSSL
Both Apache configurations are identical, the only difference besides the hardware is that LiquidWeb runs CentOS4.7 and Virpus runs CentOS5.2, any ideas? It's not to big of a deal since I'm not near my limit for either of them but I was just curious.
What traffic monitor would everyone recommend for sites that have as many as 5,000 to 10,000 hits an hour?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to monitor (with statistic) and cap traffic on 3+ servers.
how is this done best?
I was thinking of somekind of switch or server set inbetween the servers and the internet monitoring and keeping data on the traffic use etc.
but what do you do?
and how to make such a monitor redundant so if it fails the network is not cut off from the world?
Don't know if this is the right place to ask for this but here goes.
I have a 20U rack space and i use 4U of this space (1U + 2U servers and a 1U switch).
There is a 20Mbit internet connection on a 100Mbit network.
But here comes my problem, some friends have there servers in my rack space to, There is 12 servers that are my friends and i want to know how much traffic they use.
I want to know how many GB traffic they use to i can charge them (they don't pay right now).
2 of my friends servers must max take 50gb traffic!
Is there a switch that can do theys two things?
Show traffic and limit traffic?

I have a windows 2003 vps and I need way monitor how much traffic I make per month. I believe I'm getting close to my quota and I need to measure it.
I've seen some nice free programs that claim to work on windows 2003 server but the fact is they don't use a service so they only work while the GUI program runs, which is obviously silly for a server!
What do you guys use for this? I mean other then web traffic tools since most of my traffic is not HTTP!
Does anyone have a tutorial or instructions to show how to set up munin to monitor bandwidth/traffic utilization?
I have a VPS from a provider that has no monitoring tools, and I need something to monitor.
(The VPS uses the HyperVM software.)
I am using the CentOS version 4.x right now, and munin is already set up and configured with a basic install.
Anyone know how to add traffic/bandwidth monitoring? (Ideally, it would monitor all active ports.. but I only really need it to monitor port 1194 for openVPN software.)
Can you recommend a method to check ram usage of my vps for the last 24 hrs?

I have a dedicated server which I use to run tomcat and various other things on.
Anyway, I'm looking for some software which will monitor memory and CPU utilisation and output it in some easy to read/understand format. Server is running apache, mysql and php as well as tomcat.
I have been looking everywhere for a program that can monitor a process's CPU usage and if it exceeds a certain percentage for a given amount of time, kill the process.
Everywhere I look, it's either doesn't kill automatically, or is for Linux. Can anyone recommend me a program that can do this for Windows 2003?
Is it actually possible to find Windows dedicated server with unlimited traffic (1Gb Pipe)and reliable 24/7 technical support? Cause I have searched and found out that if the traffic is unlimited the pipe is too small, and if the pipe is big enough traffic is limited and additional one costs a fortune.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm working on launching this online store for a poster designer, and we're becoming more and more aware that we need a really robust and fast server. This site is looking at extremely high levels of activity whenever this designer posts a new poster. We're talking 1700 people surfing the store (downloading med-high resolution poster images) and 300 posters sold in 16 seconds kind of thing.
So, we need a really robust hosting, to work with PHP5 and MYSQL.
My previous go-to hosting provider was Lunarpages, but their customer service has gone down the crapper, and I've just about had it with them. My main questions are:
Should I be looking into getting a dedicated server, or are there hosting companies that can handle this kind of traffic on a shared server? I don't have experience administrating a server, so if we got a dedicated one we would have to pay the host to do at least some of the setup/administration, I would assume?
Dedicated server or not, what's a hosting company that has really good customer service, where we can be assured of getting somebody knowledgeable without having to wait on hold for 20 (or even 10) minutes?
I already have a UNIX server as the gateway/firewalls for few servers. How do i build an MRTG graph to monitor the bandwidth usage for each IP?
View 0 Replies View RelatedI have never rented a dedi before but have used and continue to use VPS for my websites. With a hostinabox VPS with lxadmin control panel and apache for web serving I have seen idle ram usage at around 100MB. My question is am I going to see a similar amount if I move to a dedicated server ? I ask this because I remember reading somewhere that dedis have a higher RAM usage by the OS compared to VPS. So does a dedi at idle use more RAM than a VPS at idle?

I have a site that has become very popular and I feel that I will soon outgrow my hosting plan. The site uses sub-domains in a fashion similar to About.com. In other words, I have different sites under the umbrella of the main domain. How does a site like About handle this issue? Forgive me if this is an uneducated question, but, since I can't host the sub-domains under different accounts and relieve some of the bandwidth burden how do I handle the bandwidth issue? It's not like I can have one account dedicated to one sub-domain and another to the other sub-domain or can I? Also, can anyone recommend a good hosting plan for popular sites? I have 60gb of transfer right now, but I want to explore other options while there is still time.

I migrated from one server running Plesk 10.4.4 Update #59 to a new server running Plesk 11 which I then updated to 12.0.18 Update #32. Since moving to Plesk 12 the "Notify when disk space/traffic usage reaches" emails have been being sent to our customers set up on the server whereas previously they were sent to the server admin email address.
Is this a change with this version?
I have been hosting boxcheats.com with HostGator for a few months, and two days ago I ordered a dedicated IP address to see if it would help with seo. Traffic and Adsense revenue significantly dropped immediately after the dedicated IP was assigned to my account.
Is this normal when switching to a dedicated IP address and what is the cause for the instant drop in traffic?
Can anyone give me some recomendations of some traffic accounting packages?
I'm looking for something that drives the backend stats you get as a customer when you login to your Dedicated Server providers control panel. Traffic graphs / total throughput stats etc
The obvious way to do this is to ping the switch ports and generate graphs and stats using RRD tool. The other way to do it would be to mirror the external switch port and generate stats from there (this would discount 'internal' traffic between boxes, although there will be a seperate private LAN for this).
We can obviously roll our own, but to save on man hours are there any out the box packages (open source or otherwise) to generate the graphs, traffic levels and dump it all out in a nice customer friendly report (i.e not something like Cacti).
In other words, what does everyone else use...or is it a case that everyone has based the backend on mrtg / rrdtool and built their own reporting lauyer ad-hoc on top?
hosting solution for 3 very high traffic blogs, all running on WordPress.
I have been researching dedicated and I came across a couple posts where people recommended Clustered hosting over Dedicated for better handling high traffic DB driven sites in the times of Digg or Slashdot frontpage exposure.
I would like your feedback, and your opinion on what to choose from the following options:
1. Netfirms Enterprise III (Clustered)
2. ResellerZoom Failover (Clustered)
3. LiquidWeb Dedicated Webmaster Series (Dedi w/ 2GB DDR and a 3Ghz Intel Hyperthreaded)
4. HiVelocity Dedicated (Dedi w/ Quad-Core Xeon 2.4GHz and 2GB DDR)
