Web Space As Personal Backup
Does any reliable hosting company that offers hundreds of gigs space allow "personal backups", ie. non-web content? I've been looking at ToS of some big names but most if not all don't allow this.
It would be only 1-2 gigs, so I might get away with it anyway on most hosts, but would like to avoid problems in the future. Dreamhost offers both SVN and rsync, which I'd like a lot, but they clearly forbid such use.
And, I do have an external hard drive and very important files are also on DVD and memory stick, but since I need to purchase webhosting I'm looking at this extra option too.

To Find Web Host For Personal Web Site
This is my first attempt at using a web hosting company. I currently use a free service from my ISP that gives me 25 MB of space for a personal web site. After only a few weeks, I have exceeded that limit and now find myself needing much more. My personal website will contain information of a bowling league that my friends and I belong to. I plan to have many pages of data from an Excel spreadsheet included, either in a database format, or just plain html. I also plan to have several family photos and some video on my web site. I will be adding pages on a weekly basis. I did some research and I felt I needed something like 25G of storage for all my pages containing tables and photos. Since I am not using it for business purposes, I am looking for something very basic, if that is possible. If anyone knows a decent host that can accomodate my needs, which is simple, but requiring a lot of space, please share your recommendations. My budget is between $5 to $10 per month.

Secure Web Space Costs
I'm working for an organisation which is looking for a company who can provide us with a public website to be updated with a CMS and 132 secure areas which should be accessible from that public website. Today I was sent a proposal by them stating that there would be a cost per year of: £3,350 for data storage areas of up to 20mb space per secure area (i.e. £25 per secure area) £6,700 for data storage areas of up to 75mb space per secure area (i.e. £50.70 per secure area) We really would prefer much more space per area than this (upwards of 2GB per area) and are a bit wary of how much is being charged for the storage space. I have three questions on this : 1) How do these prices compare with other hosts that you know of? Are they reasonable? 2) Is this 'secure space' much more expensive than normal space? 3) Are there hosts that offer unlimited secure space for reasonable prices? Btw, these are the facilities that this host provides: 6 redundant Internet connections 24x7x365 onsite support Fire protection Backup power generators Daily back up to magnetic tape media Anti virus protection for all uploaded content Industry Standard Cisco firewalls

Shared File Space For All Web Servers
Is it normal practice to have shared filespace that multiple web servers can access? Then I just provide my developers access to that filespace (one server, instead of multiple users on multiple servers) to manage files for different sites easily... right? (also meaning multiple servers can serve the same content) So.. what would be the best way to do this? We're talking Linux systems here by the way. What sort of specs would such a server need? I *think* it's NAS that I'm trying to get at.. unsure though if that's correct or not!

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

WHM As Well As Personal IP
regarding my computers IP. When you restart your computer, some say your IP changes everytime, but the first two blocks of your IP stay the same no matter how many times you restart your computer. For example: You turn your computer on, and you see your IP is: 64.343.87.39 Then, You turn your computer off, and turn it back on, and since your first two blocks do not change your IP will keep the "64.343" , so example would be: 64.343.98.643 = new IP (same first two blocks though) My question is, is this true on how IP's work? Secondly, if you wanted to allow WHM to only allow certain IP's to access it, could you somehow setup a range since your IP's change every time you turn off yoru computer like: All IP's that start with " 64.343 " can enter the server?

That Allows Personal Data On Pedophiles?
I wish only to point out that if this request is contrary to any rules / policies you have, so I fully understand that you remove this post. I want to start with and talk to my English in terms of writing leaves a lot to be desired It is okay for me to read English, unfortunately, it is with the writing. I have thought about this, whether it is ethically correct to do so. Weighted people's right to privacy, even if we committed crimes. That people should have the right to a second chance, I think that in most cases can agree with. Although it receives in terms of certain crimes. However, the purpose of the site which is a national site, I thought myself in the country I'm living in is that when pedophiles who expose children to abuse again and again, and the media with his integritetssyn, protects all that often these individuals. I'm actually a pretty healthy person, with which I see the good perception of people. But I have been weighted to say, one against the other, and found that if I only once can help to protect a child being abused, so it would be fantastic. Nevertheless, as pedophiles are able to access images that are vile, that means also an opportunity for ordinary citizens to spread knowledge about people with repeated relapses of sexual abuse. What I had in mind is to collect judgments, which are public documents and publish them on the site. Without any judgmental. When it's repeated abuse of children has been made on several occasions, so I think it has exhausted his right to privacy. The problem is that in many countries there are laws against that personal information not be disseminated. To my surprise, if you know any country where it is allowed, and even where there is a hosting company that can be permitted to publish these judgments?

SSL Revealing My Personal Identity
I purchased two SSL certificates from HostGator a few months ago for each of my sites. I realized that when I go to my website and click the "lock icon" at the bottom right of the screen, my personal identity is revealed. In Internet Explorer, I click the "Details" Tab then go down to Subject field. It has my Street, City, State, and Zip Code. Of course, I don't want my personal mailing address listed there and I never authorize Hostgator to put this information on my SSL Certificate. I've speaken to a few HostGator customer service reps and they all say different things. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with an incompetent employee who ended up opening a support ticket with improper grammar and incorrect things I told him on the phone. I've gotten really frustrated. One said they cannot remove that information on my SSL certificate. Then another said they can reissue the SSL certificates without revealing my mailing address for $25. I never even wanted them to put this information on there in the first place and now they want to charge me. Now another one says that what is displayed on your WHOIS information on your domain will be displayed on the SSL certificate. And since my registration is private through godaddy, that I would have to make it public whois then change it back to private so Comodo can verify my identity. I'm lost in translation here with everything they are saying at HostGator. My question is, what do I tell Hostgator? What are my rights? Why are they charging me for a simple task? It's to the point where I want to somehow get some kind of information about my SSL certificate so I can call Comodo directly to resolve this issue rather than going through their reseller, HostGator. It's gotten to a point where I want to just call up Comodo and buy SSL through them directly so that it would not reveal my personal mailing address on my SSL certificate. To hell with Hostgator, unless you guys can provide some good things to tell them on the phone.

"personal" Colo Around Boston
I am leaving waveform.net and am currently looking for a 1u colo around Boston. The server is for email and a few personal websites. I don't have the exact bandwidth requirement because 1. no actual bandwidth usage was stated in my monthly invoice, and 2. my server is down right now, so I can't extract any bandwidth data from it. My guesstimate is less than 50GB per month. I should have a better estimate when I get the server back from them. May be I should post this after that but I would like to give myself a head start in checking out the possibilities. (Server has been down for 2 weeks now and I really want it back up a.s.a.p) The requirements are very simple: 1. Around Boston (or within reasonable driving distance). 2. Easy access to the server (need not be 24/7, only need to do this if there is hardware issue). 3. If possible, serial console access. 4. And (of course) reasonable pricing. Currently, I am inclined towards netriplex, but am open to other suggestions. For this kind of "small fly" colo, is it advisible to give quotecolo a try?

Rsyn --backup --backup-dir Switches For Incremental Backs
I current do some rsync backups with a command like so every day rsync -az -e ssh --stats --delete --exclude "stuff" / user@server:/home/user/ What I want to do is have some incremental backups in there in subdirectories. So, for example, something like this on the remote server /home/user/something.tuesday /home/user/something.friday I thought the --backup --backup-dir Switches were used to store just the files that had changed in seperate directories, am I wrong on that? I've read everything I could find, including the big rsnapshot scripts, but I'm not able to do what I want, it seems so simple but something's not right, am I wrong that subdirs should have just files that are new or have changed. I tried various things like this, but had no luck rsync -az -e ssh --stats --delete --backup --backup-dir=/home.Thursday --exclude "stuff" / user@server:/home/user/

Route My IP Space
what is needed is a dedicated server or colocation in which my portable IP space (a class c assigned to me in 1995) can be routed to in its entirety. We will then have a VPN back to our own site. This could be accomplished by the ISP BGP peering, or simply announcing the routes themselves. We've got clue in routing, both in OpenBSD and IOS. The machine doesn't have to be too powerful, and needs little storage space, but the bandwidth provided has to be decent. This is for a hobbyist rather than commercial project, so price is an issue.

How Is It A Waste Of Space
I'm starting to get annoyed with companies stipulating that is it considered a waste of space to store your own files, and backups or whatever on your shared hosting account. I don't understand why that is considered a waste of space you purchase that space and bandwidth. So why can you not use it for whatever you want in legal terms. In fact I would be confident to say I have not seen a single terms of service NOT state that you cannot use your space as storage.

Why So Little Disk Space
I've got a server in a local colo facility. both the facility and my server are slowly falling apart. Rather than investing in hardware and then shipping it to some location and hoping it doesn't break, I've decided to investigate VPS. What I am finding is puzzling me. Why do providers charge so much for disk space? My current old p3-733 has a 30gb drive, I could deal with about 15gb but with some 'flex' room (i.e. a virtual drive for uncompressing files or some such). It's a personal server for me and a couple of friends, it doesn't get much traffic, I don't need a heck of a lot of bandwidth, nor anything flashy, just Ubuntu 8.04. I see places offering plenty of traffic for a decent price, yet little in the way of storage. I just don't get it. A year ago I was here wanting to trade my class C for a dedicated server. I realize now that it would be pretty difficult for providers to do this, because if I wanted to yank my class c they'd have to renumber. But if anyone is still interested, let me know.
