VPSFarm Reviews/Opinions/Experiences
May 27, 2007
I'm tired of waiting for my Slicehost (other providers seem capable of not needing a waiting list?) so I'm thinking of VPSFarm.
I've done a search on here but not found much bar a couple of mentions and some advertising from them.

new colocation provider, and so I've started a thread for each one that I'm seriously considering. I hope to draw on your collective experience to help me with this decision.
Anyone had any experience with Layer42 colocation in Santa Clara?
Thanks,
Matt Olson
Ruby Cloud
Some background on my requirements:
I'm looking for a single cabinet with 40amps and a pretty small bandwidth commit for now -- probably 1-2Mbps, but increasing to probably 20 early next year. I'd want 24x7 access, and really just need space, power, and network, not any managed services. I'm looking for a reliable provider with full redundancy throughout, good security, and a nice multihomed bandwidth mix on a single 100Mbps drop. I want to work with a stable company with a good reputation for constant uptime and good service.

Anyone had any experience with ethr.net colocation in MPT?

I have searched the forum and I cannot find any posts about Hajto Unmetered Solutions. Was wondering if anyone has had any experience/reviews of them.

I've been been with vpsFarm for 7 weeks and so far so good. vpsFarm is a no-frills, low-cost, self-managed VPS provider. This is my first experience with web hosting. (However, I have setup a test server at home so I was comfortable going with a self-managed service.)
Pros:
(1) Zero down-time so far
(2) Good server performance (with Xen1024 plan)
(3) Low cost
(4) Unlimited transfers (no metering)
(5) Response to my single support question was the same day and fully resolved the issue
(6) Almost-instant account setup
Cons:
(1) No frills or extras (e.g., no cPanel/Plesk/Directadmin, no auto-backups, no automatic server transfers for upgrades). This is a true do-it-yourself service. (This shouldn't really a problem since it's not advertised otherwise.)
(2) My single support question was regarding missing kernel modules -- while the issue was dealt with quickly, I think they should have been in the initial OS setup in the fist place (or at least noted up front).

Thought I'd register here too to share my experience. I run a VPS with VPSFarm with a friend of mine hosting a few business sites. Yesterday around 6:00pm, we noticed the server go offline and panic set in. Long story short, PayPal couldn't charge the credit card and the account eventually cancelled (they tried 2-3 times first). Anyway, I contacted support around 8:00 or so central time (I think), and we had things back up within an hour or so. They didn't loose a byte, and let me set up a new account and link the server to it.

Not interested in reseller plans or any of that - strictly as a site for domain purchase and personal site hosting. I have them and am becoming very unsatisfied and looking for alternatives.

Based on my experience with their twin brand, Hostmonster, I would say that they should be just fine for a hobby site/playing around. I don't know about their support, as I didn't use it.

solarVPS opinions?
I did a search, and found mostly good things about solarVPS here. I want a little more re-assurance and hope that others that had good or bad experience with them can chip in on their VPS service.

I'm using Awardspace right now, but cannot say that I'm completely happy with them, mostly because of the downtime issues. It is up pretty much 99% of the time as they claim, but there are some issues with mysql database latency which from time to time make my site inaccessible, even thought the server is actually up.
Anybody else using this service ?
I'm talking about Awarspace paid, not free service

I am wondering what your opinions are regarding Ubersmith DE. Opinions from the ISP and the customer are welcome
We were first looking to write our own complete datacenter solution with integrated billing, ticketing system and all.
After seeing what kind of companies already are using Ubersmith DE, it has to be a good alternative!

I'm a non-techie trying to choose a dedicated hoster. From searching through reviews and prices, I've come down to Lunar Pages or Liquid Web. Would you please give me your opinions of these two, and if there are others that you feel strongly about instead, mention those as well? I would really appreciate it -- I'm very anxious about choosing a reliable company with good service, b/c I'll pretty much be at their mercy! (Life is hard for the non-technical
My programmer gave me these requirements: managed hosting, windows server 2003 or 2008, web edition, 2 GB ram, ms sql server 2005 or above, quad core processor from 1.8 - 2.4 ghz, firewall, automatic backup -- 10 GB, remote desktop connection.

Considering a dedicated box at Gigenet, as their configurations and prices look good. However, I don't know any customers there.
We're looking for a basic unmanaged box with decent latency to both coasts and non-idiotic people to respond to tickets.

I had the chance to work with the summit24 switches, and I personally liked them. It is straight-forward in my opinion for the Web Interface compared to others I have seen and the pricing seems to be reasonable.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of their switching devices.

What do you think about this cabinet style's ability to cool say 18-20 1U core 2 duo servers? [see attached jpeg.]
its got a fan in the ceiling of it. I have read that ceiling fans don't do much and its the front to back cooling that really makes a difference. Is this true?
If you don't like this type of cab, which type do you like?

experience with connexions4london as an IP transit provider. We are looking for dual 100Mbit (commit) connectivity in Telehouse East and their pricing and response time on the quote was very good.
Any feedback on their tech support and network will be greatly appreciated. Any other options (good network/price)

They are sure running some great specials right now but sometimes things aren't as good as they seem. Any experiences from people especially on their management services & such from users who have had them (or used to have them) for some period of time (not brand new or short-time users--- unless the short time was due to very bad experiences from the start).
And please-no "secret reps" telling me how great you are, would like some actual user experiences. Have been very happy with the same provider for over 6 years but their pricing is not reflecting the current trends in server technology & I'm growing tired of "negotiating" (old tech at new tech prices) so I've been looking for some options for the first time in years.
High-end users preferred (quads-dual quads etc.) but mainly want to know if they live up to their management & security promises (response times SLA, tech knowledge, etc. for "fully managed".

I would be interested in hearing thoughts on your experiences with Installatron. Is the availability of this something that you put a lot of value in when choosing a hosting provider?
