Upgrading Without Affecting Plesk
Mar 25, 2007
I just obtained a root server which is running plesk 8.0.1. At present the server runs:
php 5.0
mysql 4
apache 2
FC2
I want to upgrade to at least php 5.2, and MySQL 5. However I'm affraid this may break Plesk? I heard MySQL 5 is only supported by Pleask 8.1 or above?
If I go ahead with this decision, is there anything I should be aware of? Can anyone advise of any procedure I should follow to make things simple and minimise conflicts such as Plesk integration etc.
Also a slightly different note I have come accross atomicrocketturtle. Can anyone explain what this is about?

We have one server don't want to touch the php on - how can we upgrade our PPA cluster and leave the one server alone - or at least exclude it from upgrading PHP/mySQL/Apache?

I would like to set up a new site in English but the subject matter is in another country. Is it better to host my site in England or the States because I understand Google sorts out queries by IP address. Is this correct and will I be penalized for setting up someplace else?

I have a Win2003 dedicated server (with The Planet) that i use to host a large IPB forum site.
I got it about 3yrs ago and as I was a complete newbie to server management I got Plesk CP installed so that it would take care of all the SQL, PHP and mail installation and setup in one easy go.
I've since found Plesk for Windows to be a complete waste of space.. but it's still on there and has never been upgraded. I don't actually use it as a CP.
Similarly PHP and mySQL have never been upgraded.
Now I've got to the stage where, to upgrade the IPB forum software, I need to upgrade PHP and mySQL.. but looking at the installation, they seem to be embedded in the Plesk installation. They're inside the SWSoft/Plesk/ folders and none of the ini or config files appear to be in the places you'd expect them to be.
My question -
Would these upgrades be simple?? A case of just running an update package?? Or is the fact that PHP/mySQL are embedded in Plesk mean that it'll all mess up?
I'm worried that a failed upgrade will knacker the forum, which is why I've delayed for so long.

I just ran a simple yum update php on the server, because I need to be running 5.2 instead of 5.1.6
The update went smoothly, so I restarted httpd, and all hell broke loose. Apache can't start because of a whole lot of missing modules. So I commented out every single LoadModule line to see if that would get it to start, and it started complaining about the configuration file of some other software being incorrect (because that configuration file pointed to some module that no longer exists)
At one point I was able to get apache to start, I believe by copying my old configuration file to httpd.conf and then commenting out some lines that it was complaining about. Apache started, but no pages were loading.
So right now, basically, I've got no web service running at all on the server. I really didn't expect all of these problems for a simple PHP update, but obviously I was mistaken.
Is it worth trying to fix this myself (intermediate linux user here) or would it just be easier to hire someone to come in and do it for me?

OS: CentOS 6.4 (Final)
After upgrading components as suggested by "Tools&Settings->Plesk->Updates and Upgrades" item, components remained the previous version (PHP 5.3.3 and MySQL 5.1.73) as stated by phpinfo() result and by "Tools&Settings->Server Management->Server Components" list, though "Update Components" is no more permitted as if there is nothing more to update.
I need both PHP and MySQL servers updated in order to run Joomla 3.3.6.

Yesterday we upgraded V.11 to V.11.5.30. And now we are not able to restore our backups anymore from our main server on our failover server by CLI (we have automated this with cronjobs and need the CLI backup/restore). We have a failover sulotion with two servers and restore the backups of our main server on our failover server!
If we try to create the map file on our failover server, we get the error:
The dump specification '/home/backups/plesk_partnerserver/dumps/backup_info_1308030132.xml' should be inside of dump directory '/home/backups/plesk/dumps'.
/home/backups/plesk_partnerserver/dumps is the path on our failoverserver where we store the backups of our main server and /home/backups/plesk/dumps ist the regular dump path of the failover server.
And if we try to restore the file without creating a map file on our failover server with /usr/local/psa/bin/pleskrestore --restore backup_info_1308030132.xml -level server: Unable to resolve all conflicts
What happend? Now after upgrading to 11.5 our backup- and failover-solutions are in big trouble!
Our OS is Debian Squeeze
PP is 11.5.30

Yesterday I've upgraded the server to Plesk 12.0.18. After the upgrade, a WHMCS install has stopped working.
The only error logs where I found errors is the proxy_error_log. It contains this kind of lines (for the 502 error):

If I create an html file via SSH (nano) in the /www/ directory of a website, save it and then chown it to the correct user, why will I get a 403 (Permission Denied) error unless I chmod the file to 755?
I think I've changed something system-wide that I'm not sure how to revert, and it seems to be impacting other services (such as mail, cron and stats generation).
I thought it was Linux Environment Security, and then I reverted the changes it made, but this made no effect on the problems I'm having.

We have a plesk server running on a Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS machine. We check the state of the mailqueue with nagios, executing the "mailq" command. After the AutoInstaller upgraded our installation from 12.0.18 update 38 to 39, we noticed, that the nagios check failed.
After investigating a little bit, it seems that we found the problem:
When I enter "mailq" in the shell, the command is executed and gives me an proper output. But when I try to execute the command with its full path "/usr/bin/mailq" nothing happens, and I have to cancel with [ctrl]+[c]. The which-command delivers exactly the same path as written above...

I am running phpbb 3.0.12 installed from Plesk. In Plesk it is showing me that there is an upgrade available to version 3.1.2-15 however when I Re-Check the version in phpbb it says that I already have the latest version 3.0.12. That's a little weird.
The problem is when I upgrade to 3.1.2-15 in Plesk, it will mess with the whole installation. The forum page will redirect in circles to /install/index.php which doesn't even exist and I can't do anything except revert to before the upgrade.
So my questions are: Why does Plesk show a version 3.1.2-15 but phpbb says the latest one is 3.0.12? How does the upgrade process from Plesk work? I expect it to automatically do everything, or why else would I want to let Plesk upgrade?

I upgraded from 10.4.4 to 11.0.9 and saw no errors in the process, everything was fine. However when I checked the sites after, all of them (including sub-domains) were showing the default domain page. All the files are still there no problem, and as a test I deleted a subdomain a recreated it and it worked fine.
I have a feeling it's something to do with IP addresses (I currently have two set up - most sites use one and about only 5 use the other) as going to the subscription and changing the IP address over to the other one then back to the original seems to make the site show up for most sites. I can't do this on all sites though - any commands to reconfigure everything and get it all back in to place?

I had Plesk 10 installed on my openSUSE system (was a low version, maybe 11 or less) and then decided to upgrade to 11.5. So I did distribution upgrades to openSUSE 12.3 and everything went smoothly, except for some services like mysql and php. So I used Plesk autoinstaller to fix the php error and edited an outdated line in mysql configuration and both services ran smoothly!
Then I downloaded Plesk autoinstaller and ran the autoinstaller, but was surprised by this error message:
===> Checking for previous installation ... found.
ERR (3) [panel]: Error during product key mode determination, details: Unable to connect to database: ; trace: #0 /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/functions.php(2821): isPpaKeyRequired()

Unable to connect to database:
- My MySQL version is: 5.5.33 openSUSE package
- I did run mysql_upgrade with my admin username and password (password from: /etc/psa/.psa.shadow) and it worked successfully and fixed all of the errors, I did so after running the auto installer first, but then ran the installer again and the problem was still there
- I can access my web page, but it still doesn't connect to MySQL either.
I believe this is a problem with MySQL, but how can I make sure or detect what exactly the problem is

My .NET software requires version 3.5 of the framework. But the ISAPI module is 2.0 and I'm wondering how I can upgrade it to 3.5. Windows hosting is not my field so I am a bit lost here.
Anyone have pointers? So far I've been looking for an ISAPI module but haven't found any. The 3.5 framework is installed but I don't know where the .dll file is (if there is any for IIS).

I am currently upgrading my PHP on my unmanaged VPS. From PHP4 to PHP 5. I have been following the following website tutorial at nix101.com/2007/09/22/setting-up-a-secure-and-fast-php-build-for-litespeed/ on how to do it for the litespeed server of which I have got installed.
But now I have come to the stage where it says Make, Make Install. And I keep on getting the following error messages coming up
Make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
Make Install: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
I have got running on it Centos 4 and I have just installed Yum to see if that sorts out the problem. But it don't.
So any suggestions on how to sort out the make, and make install so that I can finish configing PHP.

to upgrade my server to PHP 5 from PHP 4.3.9
My server specs are;
Centos 4.2
Plesk 8.3.0
PHP 4.3.9-3.12.1.swsoft
Apache 2.0.52-28.ent.centos4.1.swsoft
MySQL 4.1.20-3.RHEL4.1.el4_6.1
I also have access to root SSH.
will "yum update php" do the trick? If so will I also keep the GD Library support?

this may seem like a strange question but what happens to your and other VPS accounts when someone upgrades part of their account? This doesn't make much sense so I'll give you an example...
Your VPS host has a nice big server with 8Gb of RAM. Currently there are 16 users on the server each with 512Mb RAM (for simplicity) therefore all RAM is currently used. Now, say I decide to upgrade my RAM to 1Gb, what happens? Do they move me to a new server? Do they move someone else to a new server? Is there any down time during this move? Would I be notified of this move?
This question is more out of curiosity than anything else and I know that the above example is somewhat unrealistic as most servers which were hosting VPS would probably have some spare RAM but eventually it has to run out.

I'm debating whether I should try upgrading php myself or if I should just pay someone to do it.
I know very little about server stuff. I'm more of an SEO guy who can write a few php scripts.
Currently we are running Plesk 7.5.4 on our server with PHP version 4.3.2. I want to install the latest version of vBulletin on the server, but it requires at least 4.3.3.
Unless there are some unforseen issues, I'd be happy to upgrade to the latest version, PHP 5.2.1.
Is this a super easy type of deal that even a server retard (myself) could handle or is it something that only an experienced server dude / chick should mess with.
If it is a good idea to pay someone, what is a fair rate?

I've traditionally used shared hosting to cover all my needs however as my sites have grown in popularity my host has suggested I should really upgrade to a VPS before he pulls the plug.
However as I've always been within a shared environment, I've absolutely no idea what sort of resources I will require. Bandwidth and disk space I can manage, but how does one work out the RAM requirements of a piece of software without prior access to a Dedicated or VP server?
Basically I need to run a Joomla install (with a forum integrated), two more standalone forums, a MediaWiki site, the Roundcube mail system and a few static websites. Can anyone point me to a resource that would allow me to work out a rough requirements estimate for that?
Luckily the host I'm considering offers an off-server Control Panel (HSPcomplete, never heard of it mind) but would I be right in thinking I'd still require a fairly sizeable machine?

We have 2 servers with old Dual Opteron 285's and would like preform an upgrade. I'm not sure where to start, these servers are for webhosting and load is pretty much around 3~5 during peak times.
We have the following choices:
Single Q9550 (Will it preform better than my current CPUs? Are they suitable for server use?)
Dual E5405's (Slowest Harpertown, is it worth it?)
