Transfering To New Domain And Keeping Content Structure

Apr 21, 2007

what's the most practical way to move ALL the content from one domain to another in terms of keeping decent search ranking as well as forwarding to the new domain.

So like say the current URL is:

[url

And I want it to be:

[url]

So if you went to the example.com version it'd automatically forward to the example.org version and then the search engines would pick up on that and update the URL.

I've got full control over all the DNS zones, nameservers, etc etc...so whatever is the best option I can do it. I just don't know what that best option is.

I eventually want to end apying for this host and start andn account with another. so the question is: when I transfer a domain, can i transfer a database as well? If so is it likely the host would do this for me or is there some method I would have to learn?

Domain Root And Subdomain Structure

Jun 22, 2008

I am a bit confused about domain and sub-domain setup for my website.

I have Wordpress and VBulletin Forum on my website like this:

/www/mywebsite/wordpress
/www/mywebsite/vbulletin

Right now, my domain points to this folder:
[url]

I have a .htaccess file there which redirects it to the wordpress folder i.e.
Redirect permanent /index.php http://www.mywebsite.com/wordpress
DirectoryIndex index.php

But, I would like my domain name point directly to the wordpress folder like this:
[url]

But the problem when i do that is my "VBulletin" forum get's messed up because then:
[url]----------resolves to--------->
[url]

I m thinking to resolve this issues, I will have to add a subdomain for forums like this:
[url]-> [url]

But I am wondering if I do that, won't it fail again, because it will do this:
[url]-----will resolve to----->
[url]

Keeping Multiple Domain Names Separate

May 31, 2007

How can it be determined that multiple domains are "affiliated" with each other? For example, at the link below, on the left side of the page it says that yahoo.com, yahoo.net, and yahooligans.com are owned together. Does this mechanism use WHOIS records, or does it use the IP addresses to which each address resolves (which would only get sites that use named-based virtual hosting to the same IP address, right?)

[url]

If people run multiple sites, say personal and business, and they don't want them to be affiliated, how can they make sure they can’t be linked with each other through such mechanisms?

1 Domain + 2 IPs = Duplicate Content Penalty

Nov 26, 2007

I have several websites setup as follows:

- uploaded on host 1 at dedicated IP 111.111.111.111

- and also uploaded at host 2 (backup host) at dedicated IP 222.222.222.222

The dns A-record constantly points at host 1 (IP 111.111.111.111); in case that host fails, I manually switch the dns A-record to host 2 (IP 222.222.222.222).

Being dedicated IPs, I can simply type them in my browser's address window, and I see the index page of my website.

So, in fact, my site can be accessed via 3 urls: my_site.com, 111.111.111.111 and 222.222.222.222.

The question is: will that get me into trouble with Google and other search engines that may see there a duplicate content at 3 different urls and penalize me for that? If yes, how can I avoid it?

Transfering Accounts (Resellers -> VPS)

Dec 29, 2008

It's been a long time since I have last transfered an account between 2 servers.

I have reciently purchased a VPS using Xen as an upgrade from my resellers account. Only problem that I am having is actually transfering the accounts between the 2 servers.

I do not have root access to the resellers account and the server that it is on has tight security. I have tried using the transfer between 2 servers method on WHM however this has failed.

I have also tried the method of backing up, transfering to the other server which works fine. However I am unable to restore the full backup.

I have also tried the Restore a Full Backup/cpmove file [url] is WHM of my VPS however it is unable to find the backup files.

(SSH is also my week point when it comes to server knowledge)

Transfering Wordpress Site From 1and1 To * ?

Jun 7, 2009

I'm having sort of a problem figuring out how to transfer one of my wordpress blogs to another host and was wondering if there is anyone experienced here that could offer their knowledge

Basically I signed up for hosting with 1and1 when I got my first site (I didn't know any better). I created a blog out of that site but now I want to transfer it to another host such as hostgator or what-have-you.

How can I do this without having to start over from scratch and lose everything?

Transfering My Clients To A New Host But Maintaining Website Function And Integrity

Jan 6, 2009

I have 35 clients hosting on my dedicated server.

I am going to be ending my service as a host provider, and I need to transfer all of my clients to a new host.

Many of my clients sites were written 3-4 years ago in php while global vars was still off, and so many of the sites might not function correctly if I just pop them to a new host.

My first solution would be to bypass the php .ini file with a public_html/ based ini that would override any newer server settings.

Does anyone know of a good host that could take my clients? And also support the php version locally to the shared account?

I need a host that is reliable, and honest.

Am I going about this the right way?

I am open to any suggestions or advice on this.

I should probably add, all of my clients pay on an annual basis from $89-$140. None of my clients run video sites or any heavy media stuff.

Transfering CPanel Accounts From A Reseller Account To A VPS Without Root Password

Nov 26, 2008

I was just wondering if someone has made a new tool/script yet that will allow yo to transfer CPanel accounts in bulk (not the old way of doing them one by one) to another server (VPS/Dedicated) without having root access?

Like I know in order to use the WHM's transfer from server to server you need root access on both servers, but I'm asking, if you have a Reseller account, and a VPS/Dedicated server, I know last time I checked the only way to transfer accounts over was by making a Backup file for each account and then transfering it over which can take a while if you are doing a lot of accounts.

Shared Hosting Directory Structure

Jun 2, 2009

I recently switched from one shared hosting company to another. Both plans included WHM and Cpanel. After gaining access to the new WHM, I created a second domain (the first was established by the hosting company upon startup with a domain name I had just purchased). At that point, both domains showed in WHM; I could access both with Cpanel, and I could properly use SFTP to access the correct /home remote starting directory for each of the two domains.

I had provided my new host with a full Cpanel backup of the second domain (the one I just installed on my new account myself) from my old host. That night the new host restored all files including mysql.

At this point, I can still access the original domain (established by my new host the previous day) just as I did before. However, now I cannot access the restored domain using SFTP ("can't find directory" error message). I have to use FTP. Also, I can't acccess the proper starting directory. My FTP agents (I've used two) go immediately to /public_html, nor can I go up even one level. This means that I've lost the ability to access two higher directory levels in the ususal /home/mydomain/public_html directory structure.

I've used various starting remote directories within my third party FTP agents to no avail.

Support is courteous, but stumped. They indicate that the directory structure looks fine from its end. Indeed, if I use Cpanel file management for the problematic domain, I too can see and access /home/mydomain-name, something I can't do using third party agents.

I am concerned that security may be problematic with this situation. Even though I can access the suspect domain using Cpanel and see its front end with a browser, I wonder whether there might be issues down the road.

Directory Structure And Addon Domains

Aug 6, 2008

I have a shared hosting account. VPS or dedicated is not an option.

I use CPanel.

For example, www .maindomain. com is the primary domain associated with the hosing account.

When adding subdomains or addon domains, a new directory is created in the public_html directory of my hosting account.

These new directories hold all the files for the sub domains and addon domains.

My problem is that the directory that holds the subdomain or addon domain CAN BE accessed from:

[url]
or

www .maindomain. com/addon_domain_directory/

thus,

www .addon_domain. com can be accessed from it's own URL as well as
www .maindomain. com/addon_domain_directory/

Is there a solution that DOES NOT allow this to happen?

If my main domain could have it's own directory under public_html, that would be great, but I do not know if this is possible.

A directory structure like this:

-public_html
-maindomain
-subdomain
-addon domain

Custom Directory Structure With LxAdmin

Aug 20, 2008

I just purchased a new VPS. I don't really like how lxAdmin lays out directories. I am not sure if what I want to do is possible, but I'll ask anyways:

/home/    /northwinddesign/    /client1/    /client2/    /client3/    /lib/

This way, when I log in with ftp, I see folders for my site (northwinddesign), all of my clients site (accessible with one click) and my codebase library. Ideally I would like the client1, etc. directories to be the webroots for their domains.

However, I'm not sure whether lxAdmin can still manage a directory like that. I'm pretty good with the command line, but I have several clients who want a control panel to see bandwidth, stats, and stuff.

Keeping Files From Coming Up On Google With IIS

I know with Linux servers you can place a .htaccess file which can restrict bots from accessing certain directories, but how can you do it with a windows server running IIS? I would like to get in contact with these companies and let them know about the issues I ran into with their site.

Keeping Single CPU Hyper-v System At > 85%

Oct 21, 2009

We have a few single CPU (54xx quad core)systems running Hyper-V and looking at the Hyper-V Logical Processer Total value in Perfmon its staying pretty much from 85% to 100% all day long. Perfomance is mostly ok with an occasional hesitation, but the biggest reason is we are trying to avoid doubling the cost of SPLA license by not adding the second CPU. Most motherboards we have only hold 16 gig to 24 gig memory and by adding a second CPU both will probably be less then 40% or 50%

Any problems keeping a 54xx or any CPU for that matter running flat out as long as its cooled OK?

Keeping Multiple Severs In Sync

Aug 11, 2008

We are in the process of replacing our site & hardware (all co-located servers) and moving to a five server config with 2 Apache servers, 2 MySQL servers and a stage server (where pages are prepared). The Apache servers utilise mod_proxy_balancer and a PHP/MySQL script to connect to either of the MySQL servers which replicate with each other.

The bit I am a bit stuck on is keeping both the Apache servers in sync with eachother in terms of files (pages & images) - has anyone got any suggestions that could help with this?

Ideally, the images would be placed on the stage server and automatically copied to the 2 Apache servers. I did have one idea which was to put the images on one of the MySQL servers and use that as a file store but then if that goes down, we are in the poo so to speak.

Keeping Mirror/Mirroring Backups...anything Better Than Rsync?

Dec 17, 2008

Keeping mirrored backups...anything better than rsync?

I'm keeping mirrored backups of my servers. Does anyone know of any solution better than rsync to update the files on the backup server?

I've noticed that when running rsync it can cause a lot of disk i/o, which can slow down a running server.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to decrease disk i/o or another solution to keeping mirrored backups on a secondary server?

For instance if the old account is apples@domain.com, I'd like to forward new emails to oranges@new.com, where apples doesn't keep the new emails. Currently in cPanel when I create a forwarder apples@domain.com=>oranges@new.com, new emails are sent to both accounts.
