Transfering My Clients To A New Host But Maintaining Website Function And Integrity

Jan 6, 2009

I have 35 clients hosting on my dedicated server.

I am going to be ending my service as a host provider, and I need to transfer all of my clients to a new host.

Many of my clients sites were written 3-4 years ago in php while global vars was still off, and so many of the sites might not function correctly if I just pop them to a new host.

My first solution would be to bypass the php .ini file with a public_html/ based ini that would override any newer server settings.

Does anyone know of a good host that could take my clients? And also support the php version locally to the shared account?

I need a host that is reliable, and honest.

Am I going about this the right way?

I am open to any suggestions or advice on this.

I should probably add, all of my clients pay on an annual basis from $89-$140. None of my clients run video sites or any heavy media stuff.

Transfering Domain To Another Host.

Nov 27, 2007

I have a domain with a host. Also I have a database with the host. there are tables with considerable data in the database that connect to the domain. I eventually want to end apying for this host and start andn account with another. so the question is: when I transfer a domain, can i transfer a database as well? If so is it likely the host would do this for me or is there some method I would have to learn?

Move Your Hosting Website, And Its Clients, Without Any Downtime?

Sep 11, 2008

Is it possible to move your hosting website, and its clients, without any downtime?

Please consider the following scenarios:
1. Moving between Reseller Plan, VPS, or Dedicated Server
(same and/or different provider)

2. Moving to a new provider
(same package)

Also,
If you have been able to move between packages/servers flawlessly with the same provider.

Where To Host My Clients

Jun 5, 2009

I've been developing websites for clients on and off for about 5 years. I've recently gotten more serious about developing as my client base is growing. So, as I get more clients I develop sites for I need to figure out where to host the sites.

So, the question is VPS, Dedicated, or Shared. How do I compete with companies that charge $6.99 for so much data transfer and storage?

My Clients Host At 1and1

Apr 8, 2009

I have a client who had me redesign his bands website which is currently hosted at 1and1.com. I've never dealt with them before, so I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on them. So far the technical support has been giving us a hard time retrieving the cpanel password which is different from the ftp. Other then that, is this a reliable host for a band selling there music, or would I be better off switching to another host such as jaguarpc.com?

Maintaining CPanel Server

Apr 15, 2008

I am thinking of purchasing a dedicated server running Cent OS 5 with cPanel installed.

The reason for doing this is the websites I run have large bandwidth usage and usually result in getting banned from shared hosting. I will not be reselling the hosting or have other clients on the server, just myself.

I have found a provider that offers good server prices along with 100MB/s unmetered bandwidth. Unfortunately to keep the prices low there are completely unmanaged.

I have some Linux knowledge with setting up and maintaining servers in small environments but not on the internet where lots of security issues come to light.

Will this server running cPanel be hard to maintain and is a firewall installed with or will this be a third party add-on / installation. I am worried as this will be the first t cPanel ime I will have a server exposed to the internet and do not want to be hacked etc.

Maintaining Production/Development Environment

Sep 2, 2008

Working on bringing up a new site and was looking to solicit some feedback regarding the optimum way to maintain build/production integrity.

I currently use FileZilla FTP client, set file override to trigger on size and do a bulk upload of the entire site.

The problem is that I need to exclude certain files and directories like the image directory and the configure.php etc. every time I do an upload.

I have used Dreamweavers development/production sync features for a client site in the past and that was very good.

I was thinking about writing my own script to do the maintenance work, but thought I would ask if there is a better way.

How do you all maintain your production/development synchronization?

File Integrity Check

Aug 4, 2008

I use tripwire for a long time on my FreeBSD servers

one thing that's bugging me is that it takes like 20 minutes to check the system with the default config:

so I'd like to know:
1) is there currently some other tool that does tripwire job better?

2) anyone has a list of "probably changed files when a server is hacked", or something like that?

I mean, I'll be happy if tests can take 2 minutes instead of 20 and I detect intrusion 99% of the times instead of 99,9%

so "key files/dirs" would probably be enough instead of checking a lot of dirs with recursion

Transfering Accounts (Resellers -> VPS)

Dec 29, 2008

It's been a long time since I have last transfered an account between 2 servers.

I have reciently purchased a VPS using Xen as an upgrade from my resellers account. Only problem that I am having is actually transfering the accounts between the 2 servers.

I do not have root access to the resellers account and the server that it is on has tight security. I have tried using the transfer between 2 servers method on WHM however this has failed.

I have also tried the method of backing up, transfering to the other server which works fine. However I am unable to restore the full backup.

I have also tried the Restore a Full Backup/cpmove file [url] is WHM of my VPS however it is unable to find the backup files.

(SSH is also my week point when it comes to server knowledge)

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Script To Test Integrity Of DNS - SOA Records?

May 20, 2014

I wrote a script to test the integrity of my DNS and run it from time to time on my server...

I just ran it today and it discovered I suddenly have 5 domains with SOA-records that doesn't point to itself. They point to the secondary nameserver.

They are records that exist for years and were for sure correct before (I know this because of that script).

If I do a "restore defaults" it isn't corrected and if I switch to slave and then back to master it doesn't change either...

The file /var/named/run-root/var/obfuscated.com is updated, but the slave-DNS stays in that file...

The only way I'm able to correct it is by deleting the NS-record with the slave DNS and adding it again.

I assume there's some mechanism that scans the NS-records and then decides to make that one the SOA. This has always worked fine... also on this server.

Trying To Host A Website From Home PC

May 15, 2009

I am trying to host a website from my home computer. Currently I have it setup and it works and everything. I have my virus database updated, router update, firewall up and running, and I am ready for people to try hacking. But there is one thing I can do. I can't seem to get my website online. I go to whatismyip.com and try that IP address on both the computer I am hosting the website from and a different computer downtown but I can access it. I am currently using webs.com to tell people to download COMODO EasyVPN to access my website. But they have to download it first to be able to access my website. At one time I had to load it using the IP address I go to whatismyip.com but it took it six minutes to load and with the EasyVPN it only takes seconds. I am just wandering if my internet connection is just timing out and not letting anyone on. Is there a software I can use that works like COMODO EasyVPN but lets you type in my External/Public IP address and it go to my website. I mean my connection is slow but with the COMODO EasyVPN software it makes people connecting to my computer fast. I need a software that tunnels my connection to a clients computer.

I am using the XAMPP software to host my website!

Community Website - Which Host

Jul 9, 2008

I've had four different hosts in 1½ year, and I'm noe experiencing problems again with my current host, Lunarpages. Therefore, I really want to make the right choice this time. It would be such a pleasure to see my website run without any problems for more than just 8-9 months at a time...

Anyway, let me try to describe it. It's based on the Content Management System phpFusion. It has news, downloads, forums and screenshots. The site itself is c. 2 GB large (because of forum attachments and screenshots), the download section is c. 15 GB, and the site use up about 700 GB og bandwidth each month. In the forum, there's 100.000 posts, growing day for day, of course. We have 12.000 registered members, but we only have c. 50 members online at the same time -- maximum. Throughout a week, 2.000 members log in, but as said, they are never online at the same time. The members are mostly from Europe, but we do also have members from USA and Australia.

I've had both Lunarpages and Servage as hosts, but I have experienced problems with both of them. Servage has a daily bandwidth limit which I had overlooked, and the website constantly exceeded this. Lunarpages is very, very slow when using a MySQL DB.

CPanel/WHM To Host A Website

Oct 7, 2007

am trying to set it up to host my website. After giving it the ol' college try, I might have done it, I think. I wanted input about what I have done wright and/or wrong configuring the VPS and cPanel/WHM? Please let me know what else I need to post (MX record, A records, DNS zone files, etc...)?

So far I have done:
- Initial set up of WHM
- Created a new account
- Added additional IP address t o the server
- Edited the DNS zone file
- Set up nameservers with registrar, godaddy.com

*I think this is done correctly, if I go to (www).mysite.com, I see:

Transfering Wordpress Site From 1and1 To * ?

Jun 7, 2009

I'm having sort of a problem figuring out how to transfer one of my wordpress blogs to another host and was wondering if there is anyone experienced here that could offer their knowledge

Basically I signed up for hosting with 1and1 when I got my first site (I didn't know any better). I created a blog out of that site but now I want to transfer it to another host such as hostgator or what-have-you.

How can I do this without having to start over from scratch and lose everything?

Website Hacked. Time For A New Host

Jun 14, 2009

I have a small but somewhat popular space-history website. Very simple HTML that I typed into wordpad, but it has long pages full of photos. Since 2003, I've been using media3.net with their business-class Windows service.

A few weeks ago, mypages were hacked, and a one line script inserted that called an Adobe Flash file. Apparently this was a server-wise attack, not just my web pages. Media3.net cleaned this up, but now it has happened again.

This is bad, because Google blacklists my site, and folks on Wikipedia get upset because there are a lot of links to my site.

How are they breaking in to media3.net? I think I must change hosts, but I don't want to put my image-intensive site on overbooked hardware with limited bandwidth.

Using A Website Host For Computer Backup

Apr 23, 2008

If I get a reseller account with like 50 gigs more space (or any amount) than I actually use, can I use some of that space I'm paying for to backup my home computer? This isn't really a question of how (although I'll accept advice) but more a question of 'is this typically allowed' or 'does anybody else do this'?

Where To Host A Video Sharing Website

Jun 15, 2008

I am planning to start a web-site in which video-sharing(video-hosting) is going to be the primary concept. I need support for a very CPU and RAM instensive program called 'ffmpeg'. I also need a minimum of 2.5TB of disk space and 15TB of bandwidth every month. I tried looking for an ideal host all over the web, but I am more confused than ever.

Host Video Sharing Website

May 6, 2008

I am having a video sharing website designed. It's not going to be too busy to start with but I appreciate it will use a lot of bandwidth. I wont be offering the embed option so maybe that will limit the strain.

Any ideas on a good US-based host that can offer me a dedicated and managed solution with fast and friendly support? Any ideas of a monthly cost for a start-up?
