Directory Structure For /var/log On FreeBSD

Sep 3, 2006

I deleted my /var/log directory to clean up space, and now Exim won't work.

Can anyone please post the directory and subdirectory structure for /var/log on a FreeBSD system? I am hoping that with the right directories, the files will rewrite themselves...

Shared Hosting Directory Structure

Jun 2, 2009

I recently switched from one shared hosting company to another. Both plans included WHM and Cpanel. After gaining access to the new WHM, I created a second domain (the first was established by the hosting company upon startup with a domain name I had just purchased). At that point, both domains showed in WHM; I could access both with Cpanel, and I could properly use SFTP to access the correct /home remote starting directory for each of the two domains.

I had provided my new host with a full Cpanel backup of the second domain (the one I just installed on my new account myself) from my old host. That night the new host restored all files including mysql.

At this point, I can still access the original domain (established by my new host the previous day) just as I did before. However, now I cannot access the restored domain using SFTP ("can't find directory" error message). I have to use FTP. Also, I can't acccess the proper starting directory. My FTP agents (I've used two) go immediately to /public_html, nor can I go up even one level. This means that I've lost the ability to access two higher directory levels in the ususal /home/mydomain/public_html directory structure.

I've used various starting remote directories within my third party FTP agents to no avail.

Support is courteous, but stumped. They indicate that the directory structure looks fine from its end. Indeed, if I use Cpanel file management for the problematic domain, I too can see and access /home/mydomain-name, something I can't do using third party agents.

I am concerned that security may be problematic with this situation. Even though I can access the suspect domain using Cpanel and see its front end with a browser, I wonder whether there might be issues down the road.

Directory Structure And Addon Domains

Aug 6, 2008

I have a shared hosting account. VPS or dedicated is not an option.

I use CPanel.

For example, www .maindomain. com is the primary domain associated with the hosing account.

When adding subdomains or addon domains, a new directory is created in the public_html directory of my hosting account.

These new directories hold all the files for the sub domains and addon domains.

My problem is that the directory that holds the subdomain or addon domain CAN BE accessed from:

[url]
or

www .maindomain. com/addon_domain_directory/

thus,

www .addon_domain. com can be accessed from it's own URL as well as
www .maindomain. com/addon_domain_directory/

Is there a solution that DOES NOT allow this to happen?

If my main domain could have it's own directory under public_html, that would be great, but I do not know if this is possible.

A directory structure like this:

-public_html
-maindomain
-subdomain
-addon domain

Custom Directory Structure With LxAdmin

Aug 20, 2008

I just purchased a new VPS. I don't really like how lxAdmin lays out directories. I am not sure if what I want to do is possible, but I'll ask anyways:

/home/    /northwinddesign/    /client1/    /client2/    /client3/    /lib/

This way, when I log in with ftp, I see folders for my site (northwinddesign), all of my clients site (accessible with one click) and my codebase library. Ideally I would like the client1, etc. directories to be the webroots for their domains.

However, I'm not sure whether lxAdmin can still manage a directory like that. I'm pretty good with the command line, but I have several clients who want a control panel to see bandwidth, stats, and stuff.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Migrating Backups In Correct Directory Structure

May 28, 2015

I'm migrating sites from Plesk 9 to Plesk 12 using the migration manager. Since the migration manager doesn't migrate backups, are the backups compatible between Plesk 9 and Plesk 12? If so, is there an easy way to copy the backups in the correct directory structure since we are forced to use clients in plesk 12 and it changes the directory structure of the backups folders.

Domain Root And Subdomain Structure

Jun 22, 2008

I am a bit confused about domain and sub-domain setup for my website.

I have Wordpress and VBulletin Forum on my website like this:

/www/mywebsite/wordpress
/www/mywebsite/vbulletin

Right now, my domain points to this folder:
[url]

I have a .htaccess file there which redirects it to the wordpress folder i.e.
Redirect permanent /index.php http://www.mywebsite.com/wordpress
DirectoryIndex index.php

But, I would like my domain name point directly to the wordpress folder like this:
[url]

But the problem when i do that is my "VBulletin" forum get's messed up because then:
[url]----------resolves to--------->
[url]

I m thinking to resolve this issues, I will have to add a subdomain for forums like this:
[url]-> [url]

But I am wondering if I do that, won't it fail again, because it will do this:
[url]-----will resolve to----->
[url]

CPanel And Mail Server ? Structure Itself

Jul 16, 2007

i was wondering (i am sorry is this is the wrong place i would also ask to move it to the right place if this is the wrong one) has any one around had experience with server A with cPanel serving only DNS and HTTP with another server with MAIL and MySQL?

what do you use if so ? how did you approch the mail creation and so on?

for the dns there is the cPanel tool so i dont think it would be a trouble would it?

did you had to leave anything on the server A related to mailserver?

What would be the best structure to divide services like http, database, mail, dns and so on?

Transfering To New Domain And Keeping Content Structure

Apr 22, 2007

what's the most practical way to move ALL the content from one domain to another in terms of keeping decent search ranking as well as forwarding to the new domain.

So like say the current URL is:

[url]

And I want it to be:

[url]

So if you went to the example.com version it'd automatically forward to the example.org version and then the search engines would pick up on that and update the URL.

I've got full control over all the DNS zones, nameservers, etc etc...so whatever is the best option I can do it. I just don't know what that best option is.

CentOS Or FreeBSD

Apr 8, 2008

We are basically looking for advice on which OS to choose. CentOS appeals as it is basically RHEL - and since people are paying for that they must be doing something right. It is apparently uber stable because the versions have been tested to death... but because the packages are so out of date, or just not there, we will need to install many things from source, which defeats the point to using it for its stability.

FreeBSD seems to have an awful lot of up to date packages, took a look at it on Distrowatch and was very impressed by many are the latest versions. This would make life so much easier because the package manager can handle installs and updates, really can't be bothered with messing around compiling software for install/updates.

In my mind, if an open source project as mature as the likes of Apache, PHP or MySQL, I am pretty sure you are very unlikely to experience problems by using the latest stable version. Surely by using older versions you are more likely to experience problems as of the result of bugs/security exploits that have only been fixed in the more recent releases.

Would you use FreeBSD or CentOS/RHEL? Or are both equally as good?

Does anyone here understand many of them? If so it would be greatly appreciated if you could write up a few of the basic ones.

nanslp
kserel

pause

Those are the ones I currently see in top. I know there are probably thosands of others, but those are the ones I usally look at.

FreeBSD & FFMPEG

Mar 15, 2007

after many painstaking hours, im at a loss as to where to go now (finally managed to get up to the point of running phpize in the ffmpeg directory)

...

Originally I thought i had compiled it in when compiling PHP,

Infact:

Code:
'./configure' '--disable-debug' '--disable-rpath' '--with-bz2' '--with-curl' '--with-gd' '--with-openssl' '--with-png' '--with-zlib' '--with-mcrypt' '--with-mysql' '--with-pear' '--enable-bcmath' '--enable-ftp' '--enable-magic-quotes' '--enable-sockets' '--with-ffmpeg=yes' '--with-apxs2=/usr/local/sbin/apxs'
But when i go to the tests/ffmpeg_test.php file I get:

Code:
Warning: dl() [function.dl]: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20020429/ffmpeg.so' - Cannot open "/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20020429/ffmpeg.so" in /usr/local/www/apache22/data/tests/test_ffmpeg.php on line 17
Can't load extension /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20020429/ffmpeg.so
I used the ports tree to install FFMPEG and here is the version info:

Code:
bsd# ffmpeg -v
ffmpeg version 0.4.9-pre1, build 4718, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard
built on Mar 14 2007 20:42:22, gcc: 3.4.6 [FreeBSD] 20060305
After finally getting to this point, i say the heck with it and just decide to try and use phpize and compile it in that way as an extension ( following: http://ffmpeg-php.sourceforge.net/ ).

However, after I got phpize to work ( had to cp autoconf259 and autoheader259 to autoconf and autoheader since it was complaining about it ), it gave me this set of errors:

Code:

After I get all this working and install it on a another machine I plan on writing a guide for FreeBSD users inside the tutorials section - but this one part has stumped me.

The only thing I can think of is something along the lines of maybe i downloaded a 64 bit version of something along the way?

Should i continue along this route with phpize adding it as an extension, or does someone else have some information on that ffmpeg_test.php file?
