Suse, Debian, Fedora Or CentOS
Jul 21, 2007
I will be dropping my shared-hosting plan and ordering a small VPS as soon as I can decide on which operating sytem to use. It seems that most companies offer the following choices: Suse, Debian, Fedora and CentOS.
I freely admit that I am a full-fledged n00b when it comes to linux and will be learning as I go, the problem is I just don't know where to start because I'm not familiar with any of them. I have at least heard of Suse, Debian and Fedora before, but didn't even know this CentOS existed until yesterday... and yet, it seems to be one of the more popular choices.
So I was wondering if some of you seasoned VPS veterans here could recommend an OS, tell me what the differences are, or otherwise share any experience you might have with any of them.

I am about to sign up for a dedicated server, and I have three options to choose from... actally, 6 options:
FEDORA C7 BASIC
FEDORA C7 PLESK 8.3
FREEBSD 6.3 BASIC
FREEBSD 6.3 PLESK 8.3
CENTOS 5.1 BASIC
CENTOS 5.1 PLESK 8.3
Which one should you pick and (most importantly) why?

My hosting service doesn't provide Fedora servers anymore, and they offer only CentOS servers.
I'm now a real Fedora expert , and I don't know if I must change to CentOS in the new servers I acquire.
- Does it take too much time to learn CentOS?
- Is CentOS very similar to Fedora?
- Is CentOS more stable than Fedora?

i have seen many companies prefer using centos for running servers quite often. Any specific reason for that or am i missing something here.

how to install Ubuntu (either 7.10 or 8.04) as a XEN domU guest on a CentOS 5 / Fedora Core 8 XEN dom0 server?
I have tried installing Ubuntu as a fully virtualized guest, but the Ubuntu CD doesn't even bootup. I get the Linux bootloader, and that's it,it doesn't continue to boot. Odd.
When trying to install a Paravirtualized guest, I had to use the debootstrap method, but can't get it to boot up.
Quote:
xm create anya_zanet
Using config file "/etc/xen/anya_zanet".
Error: (2, 'Invalid kernel', 'xc_dom_find_loader: no loader found
')
This is the xen configuration:
Code:
kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.1-42.fc8"
ramdisk = "/boot/initrd-2.6.23.1-42.fc8.img"
builder='linux'
memory = 256
name = "anya_zanet"
vcpus = 1
vif = [ 'bridge=xenbr0' ]
disk = [ 'phy:/dev/System/anya_zanet,hda1,w' , 'phy:/dev/System/anya_zanet,hda2,w' ]
root = "/dev/hda1 ro"
on_poweroff = 'destroy'
on_reboot = 'restart'
on_crash = 'restart'
how to get Ubuntu working on a CentOS / Fedora Core XEN server?

I'm not a Debian user, so I want some advice how to install Debian 4 as guest OS on top of Centos 5.2 dom0.
Mostly on Google, there's a manual on Centos on top of Debian. I've tried to use the netinstall iso for debian and mount it on /var/www/html/debian and use it for remote install source. So far don't have any success on that.

I am attempting to migrate from a debian os server with the latest plesk 12 to Centos (rather cloudlinux) and would like to know if there are any options that should not be checked during the process?
I recently tried to do the normal procedure, which is to transfer all objects, etc. And for some reason the percentage went from 1-50% to then back to zero.. but when clicking to check the current status, its still working
Status: in progress
Current operation deploying domain.com
current operation progress: empty bar
Different sites are transferring, but I am not sure if the migration will effect the system because the difference in OS folder structure and file location.

For some reason I am having issues with latest Plesk with php and wordpress. HTML sites are fine, but all php and wordpress sites are giving a 502 error after fully migrating. I repaired with Webserver Configurations Troubleshooter and rebooted and its still giving me the same issue.Also, noticed my previous server had php 5.4.36, the new CentOS server has 5.4.37.

I just ordered a server which has that setup:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core
8MB RAM
2x750GB RAID 1 HD
Now I wanna run it with DirectAdmin, but obviously DirectAdmin doesn´t support the Debian 64 which is installed but only 32 bit Debian.
Now I wonder wether I could setup a Debian 32 as well on that system and if yes, wether it would give me a deficit in Performance?
Or would you rather go with CentOS 64 which Directadmin supports?

Anyone out there have experience with SuSE over RedHat? RHEL is obviously the generalized Enterprise version used across most commercial hosting companies, but I'm interested in hearing about some SuSE experiences people have had.
It looks like SoftLayer offers SuSE and a couple VPS hosting companies do the same. I'm wondering how many large-scale sites are run on this operating system.

I am having trouble finding any providers that provide Opensuse on their configs. So far, the only one seems to be 1&1 and I certainly do not want to be going near them anytime soon.
Does anyone know of a reputable company that can provide Opensuse based servers?

I have been trying to compare Red Hat to SUSE Linux, and can't really come to a definitive solution. I can't seem to find anyone that uses SUSE (Well, hardly anyway), but I found out that they have over double to market share that Red Hat has so somebody is definitely using them. I also noticed that SUSE is cheaper too.
Based on your experiences, what are some of the pros / cons both ways? Who offers better product training (I wan't to get certified directly)? Who has better product support? Is AppArmor better than SELinux?
By the way, I am only looking for commercial linux distributions. Specifically companies that offer product training.

I have a server which runs suse linux on it. Postfix is already installed on it.
But, the problem is i am not able to send mail using root. I mean using mail -v command.
I could see the following in mail logs. I know 2 files main.cf and master.cf are there.
Not, sure what to change and how.

I'm working with a local startup and we are looking into potential backup solutions. We have roughly 9 servers all running some variation of susE linux (some straight susE and some X Server which runs off susE).
We are needing a backup solution that will allow us to securely get data off the servers on a regular interval. We are unable to move the data off site as we are running on a single T1 line with moderate utilization, certainly not enough BW to go off site.

OS is OpenSuse 13.1.Yast shows the installed version of Apache2 as 2.4.6-6.23.1..I created my own CA, and used that to create a server certificate. The CA crtificate (in PEM format), and the server key and certificate have been placed in the appropriate directories in /etc/apache2 (the key in ssl.key and the certificates in ssl.crt).
When I check the status, after restarting apache, I see an error claiming that socache_shmcb_module is not installed and that it is ignored. This is, of course wrong, as I included that module in /etc/sysconfig/apache2, and the appropriate LoadModule statement in the Loadmodule.conf file (with the proper full path - /usr/lib64/apache2). This error is the only error I see on the server.

I've got SUSE 10 loaded and installed at home.
My ISP service is highspeed from Comcast (speed right now not an issue), I would like to setup a domain name on the box to play around with - nothing serious yet.
I have several domain names purchased (Wildwest & Enom) and would like to use one of those on this box, or even more domains at a later day.

I am having a problem with YUM on Fedora 5, for a long time it has not worked saying there is nothing to update when I know there is, I have tried to correct this by following a forum post of someone having the same problem, now I have really messed things up...
When I type any yum command (yum, yum --version, yum check-update etc) I get the following error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/yum", line 28, in ?
import yummain
File "/usr/share/yum-cli/yummain.py", line 29, in ?
from yum import logginglevels
ImportError: cannot import name logginglevels
perhaps removing it and installing the latest version of Yum would help however tried that and it seems to make no difference, perhaps I am doing it wrong?
