Setting Up A Domain Name SUSE 10 Runing From Home
I've got SUSE 10 loaded and installed at home.
My ISP service is highspeed from Comcast (speed right now not an issue), I would like to setup a domain name on the box to play around with - nothing serious yet.
I have several domain names purchased (Wildwest & Enom) and would like to use one of those on this box, or even more domains at a later day.

Runing Php Outside The Domain
I am implementing a global folder system so for example all the domains can go to an admin page using /admin I need to use some php code to strip www from the address, but the php does not run outside de domain name, I am getting the php code directly on the webpage, and if I use the same script inside any domain name it do work! I am missing some configuration but don't know what I am using the /alias command on /etc/httpd/conf.d to redirecto to /usr/share/common where the php files resides for all the domains using RHES4 php 4.3.9

Setting Up My Own Server At Home
So I have designed some software for my brother who owns a business and needed a website to manage his clients and send emails to them and stuff. Right now we are using Hostmonster, which has been pretty good so far. He was talking to me how it would be nice to be able to email the website and have the site automatically store the information in these emails into a database for information regarding his clients, which I know is possible, but not on a shared host it seems. I have tested my own email receiving script on a test server on my computer and it works fine. So we are continually finding our limits with a shared host. We have been looking into dedicated hosting, but as you all know its quite a price jump to go from $7 a month to $200+. I got thinking and remembered that my dad has always had a business web plan from our ISP at home (cause he likes fast internet), which according to there website serves 1Mbps upload speed. We also have 2-3 old computers sitting at home that we don't use anymore (2)2ghz pentium 4 Dells and a 3.0ghz+ Pentium 4 HP. I was thinking we could probably just plug one of those into the router, forward some ports and have our own server up and running. For now we would only host this software I made for my bro, which is used by only 4 people, and that's not even at the same time usually. So there is very little load to deal with. But in the future we may put a few other sites that we have in mind which would use PHP and MySQL quite a bit. I was just curious what some of your opinions were on creating a home server. I was looking at Ubuntu Server edition as a possibility, or XAMPP since all my machines are Windows XP. One machine doesn't work cause the hard drive is out, so if I use that I would probably have to put Ubuntu on it. Any suggestions on good server software would be great! I believe the business web plan my dad has also comes with a static IP as well, so that will help. Look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Any Security Risks With Setting Up Server On Home Network
Any security risks with setting up server on home network? I would like to set up a computer running linux or xp as a computer on our home network. We have about 3 other computers on the same network. My network manager says that it would be a security risk to the other computers on the network if I were to have the server running on the network. The server would be connected to a netgear wireless router and I would have ports 80 and 21 opened just for the internal ip address of the server. (for example, the server is on 192.168.0.3, and I had just the two ports open for it, while there were computers on 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.4). The netgear router has a firewall built into it. Each of the other computers on the network have software firewalls. I would not have a firewall on the server, and I really don't care if someone hacks it. So, what at worst could happen? Would the other computers be at risk? If you are a professional, I want your opinion also.

Setting Up Domain Forwarding?
I've taken a reseller account from ResellerZOOM which came with WHM/cPanel. I've my own private nameservers(meaning I got my own IP). I've a domain that I want to be forwarded to my wordpress.com blog, just like domain registrars offer domain forwarding but the registrar I registered my domain with doesn't give domain forwarding. so I was thinking that maybe I can point the domain to my nameservers & then have it forwarded to my wordpress.com blog. The thing is that I haven't used WHM before & I don't know how to do it, create some DNS zone maybe!! The only way I know is to create an account for that domain, allot it some diskspace & then redirect via .htaccess file, which would be overkill IMHO. I know it can be done without creating an account, some other way.

Setting Up Domain With Lighthttpd
its been long time since I have set one and its been really bugging with the feather theme interface, which I haven't used before now, here is the pt. I have 3 ips , I want the main ip to be unique i.e assuming .2, .3 and .4 are the the ips we have ben provided with, where .2 is the main ip of the server (lxadmin) now, in the dns template, I have 6 options where ip has to be assigned, as - base, cp, mail, ns, ns1, ns2 I have set the base,cp, mail, ips to .3 I don't have a clue on what to set for the ns, ns1, ns2 I want .3 to be shown as the pinged ip when site is pinged. We have set .3 and .4 as the nameserver ips in the registrar, so do I need to provide .3 as the ns1 ip and .4 as the ns2 ips or both the ips have to be .3 and what should be the ns ip?

I don't have any webpages up yet but I do have some files uploaded to be used as a redirect for a game server. The redirect isn't loading properly most of the time and when I type my domain name into a browser my directory won't show up either, just the parking page. I ordered both of these last week.

Domain Name Server (DNS) Redirection / Setting Up Zone(s)
I have a quick question about some DNS zones I'm trying to set up for a customer. I figured I would try asking the community before bugging our top-level admins (they have enough to do already, and I'd rather learn this myself). We have a customer for whom we are managing their DNS. The site is actually hosted elsewhere, but the DNS originates on our server. They have another site that is hosted with us, and they would like to set up a subdomain redirect from the remotely-hosted site to the site hosted on our hardware. So, the situation looks something like this: example.com : hosted elsewhere (primary IP not ours), DNS with us FooSite.example.com : redirect this to www.FooSite.com I could edit httpd.conf, but it would be easiest (for firewall reasons at the moment) if I could enter in the proper zones via WHM zone editor. I'll be able to see the results either way. I tried setting up the 'A' and 'CNAME' records, and I got as far as directing the 'A' records for the subdomain to the local IP, but I'm not sure how to finish it off (assuming I'm going down the right path). My own knowledge level in this regard is somewhere between novice and intermediate (which is why I have partners and admins ).

Setting Up Domain To Point And Mask To The Hosting Service
I have a domain name from godaddy and recently got a host plan in hostgator. As this is the first time I use hosting, it is very confusing how to set it up properly. So far what I figured out and was able to set is the DNS in godaddy and the add-on domain in hostgator. So now I was able to point 'MyDomain' to direct to 'hostgatorDomain/MyFolder/' (names just for example). The problem is that masking is not turned on and who ever clicks 'MyDomain' will get to the right location, but the address will change to 'hostgatorDomain/MyFolder/'. How to do the set up so the URL will not change?

Does Anyone Use SUSE Linux
I have been trying to compare Red Hat to SUSE Linux, and can't really come to a definitive solution. I can't seem to find anyone that uses SUSE (Well, hardly anyway), but I found out that they have over double to market share that Red Hat has so somebody is definitely using them. I also noticed that SUSE is cheaper too. Based on your experiences, what are some of the pros / cons both ways? Who offers better product training (I wan't to get certified directly)? Who has better product support? Is AppArmor better than SELinux? By the way, I am only looking for commercial linux distributions. Specifically companies that offer product training.

Suse, Debian, Fedora Or CentOS
I will be dropping my shared-hosting plan and ordering a small VPS as soon as I can decide on which operating sytem to use. It seems that most companies offer the following choices: Suse, Debian, Fedora and CentOS. I freely admit that I am a full-fledged n00b when it comes to linux and will be learning as I go, the problem is I just don't know where to start because I'm not familiar with any of them. I have at least heard of Suse, Debian and Fedora before, but didn't even know this CentOS existed until yesterday... and yet, it seems to be one of the more popular choices. So I was wondering if some of you seasoned VPS veterans here could recommend an OS, tell me what the differences are, or otherwise share any experience you might have with any of them.

DNS And Domain- Setting Up DNS With DirectAdmin
I've got DirectAdmin installed, and my domain name (misacampo.org) hosted with XeoDomains.com. I'm wondering how I set up my DNS so that whenever I point more domains to my VPS their DNS will be set to ns1.misacampo.com and ns2.misacampo.com. Would it be as simple as pointing my domain to my VPS IP, then setting up this in DirectAdmin?: Add Zone Domain Name: IP Address: Name Server 1: Name Server 2: Would I enter: Add Zone Domain Name: misacampo.org IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Name Server 1: ns1.misacampo.org Name Server 2: ns1.misacampo.org Then point my domain to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, and set it up my domain at XeoDomains.com like so: Add New Child Name Server Host Name: ns1.misacampo.org Ip Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and Add New Child Name Server Host Name: ns2..misacampo.org Ip Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Would this work? I'm looking to do a quick shift from my old CPS (LXAdmin) to my new VPS (DirectAdmin) with at little downtime as possible. Do I need to set up any other records for the domain for my email accounts to work, or would DirectAdmin take care of all this?

Home Server ...
I understand the risks of not using a datacenter, but for a smallish site to which uptime isn't key, is it possible to get server-quality bandwidth to my house? (No I don't mean like Gigabit, I mean like upwards of 5mbps)? I'd really like to maintain my own server (probably build one). I live in Milwaukee, so colocation is, AFAIK, out. And while I can save up for and buy a computer every few years, I cannot sustain $80/month. (I am a middle school student. My income isn't exactly regular.) So the question... can I get an ISP to let me run a server at decent speeds out of my house? Would its costs exceed colocation or that of a dedicated server?

Should I Start Hosting From Home
I've been toying with the idea of hosting from home to reduce overhead. To give you a rundown I have a pretty popular site that hosts videos and a very very large forum. The company I rent my server from now I'm starting to think is sort of a ripoff. Current Specs 2x 2.0 dual core xeon (woodcrest) 4gb ram 6x500gb drives 8/mbps (suppose to be 10) 3000gb bandwidth All of this comes to $917 a month. The thing is I'm a Systems Engineer for my 9-5 anyway, so there's nothing in the hardware/OS configuration that would send me on a loop. I get especially skiddish since all of this data which is my livelyhood I don't even have physical access to, even if I wanted to do something simple like backup the video uploads directory to an external drive or something of the sort just for peace of mind. I'm guessing my only option would be a 10mbps plan through Time Warner's business class (which I have no idea what that runs yet) then just purchase the server and UPS and just chuck it up in the office.

Trying To Host A Website From Home PC

I have my virus database updated, router update, firewall up and running, and I am ready for people to try hacking. But there is one thing I can do. I can't seem to get my website online. I go to whatismyip.com and try that IP address on both the computer I am hosting the website from and a different computer downtown but I can access it. I am currently using webs.com to tell people to download COMODO EasyVPN to access my website. But they have to download it first to be able to access my website. At one time I had to load it using the IP address I go to whatismyip.com but it took it six minutes to load and with the EasyVPN it only takes seconds. I am just wandering if my internet connection is just timing out and not letting anyone on. Is there a software I can use that works like COMODO EasyVPN but lets you type in my External/Public IP address and it go to my website. I mean my connection is slow but with the COMODO EasyVPN software it makes people connecting to my computer fast. I need a software that tunnels my connection to a clients computer. Cpanel To Mess Around With At Home
What is the easiest way to get cpanel to install on a home server to play with it? Do they have some kind of unlimited trial that limits to private class IP range or something? Would be neat to mess around with. I'd run it in a VM in the 10.1.1.x range and afaik their licensing goes by IP so if they see that IP they obviously know its not being used for a real hosting company. (well you technically could nat I suppose...) I also though of just ordering a cpanel dedicated server to mess around with but prefer to do it at home in a VM, and possibly at no cost. Anyway this can be done (legally)?
