Local To Live...sql Server
I have been working on an online shop locally from my machine, using Visual Web Developer and SQL server.
This is working fine, but now its at the stage were i need to show a client. In order to do this i need to upload it to our servers.
What i cant get my head round is the connection to the sql server, do i need to upload this too, or can i somehow point the connection string to the sql server sitting on my local machine...
Is it easier just to upload an sql server? how would i go about this?

Local To Live
have only done static html sites in the past, but am ready to branch out and learn php and mysql. I have watched numerous video tutorials on php, mysql, dreamweaver cs3, and how they all work together. I have followed all the steps on the tutorials and the website works great on my local testing server, but how in the world do I get it to work live on the internet! This is probably a very stupid question but I am at the point of not caring about looking stupid. I just want to know what Im missing/ doing wrong. The website is hosted with GoDaddy, (and the domain is registered with them as well).Am I supposed to have something set up there or a different server? I have tried using ftp to transfer all files over to the domain but when I visit the domain, the php pages do not work.

Mirroring Live Server...
I'm a web designer - not an IT guy, as such I'm not 100% on setting up servers/dev environments etc... I'm freelance and currently working in-house for a client that has set up a dev server that supposedly mirrors their live site - its a catalogue site with loads of dynamic elements. The dev site they've set up displays only the html, no images or stylesheets link up when i preview them in dreamweaver as they don't logically link to the page as the pages are templates drawn from various folders. What I want to know is is it possible to mirror a dev server exactly like the live website so the scripts etc all work as they do on the live site. I'm pretty sure it is as I've worked on dev servers before but not one like this bloody mess. The IT bods here seem to think the dev server is the best that is achievable - are they right? am I missing something??? I can't really answer any technical questions apart from i think the dev server is an apache server - what do i need to explain to the IT bods to get my point across?

Different Local Remote Server Types
I cannot find a suitable forum for this query so here goes on this one! I am doing a charity site as a voluntary exercise. They currently host with Eclipse who have the Zeus server (site developed in Frontpage). This is not an open source server. Thing is, what are the issues of say developing on my loacal machine (apache or IIS5) and having the remote being Zeus. I use Dreamweaver 8 for developing. I would of thought this does not matter as the server technology is transparent and down to configuration files. The directory structure both ends can be the same. Am I right to go ahead and not worry about this?

Can't Access My Local Web Server By Its External IP
I have a local web server that I want to make available outside of my local network of two computers. I configured NAT at my router, configured the firewall. I Typed the external IP and got nothing, while I still was able to access my web server by typing "localhost", I tried both IIS and Apache, but what is interesting is that fact that the other people can access my web server via that external IP, I just cannot access it from my local network.

Connecting To Local Server With Virtual Machines
How do you go about setting up virtual machines so that they can see sites hosted on the host machine? I've got Virtual PC 2007 and the disk image that MS supply for testing IE6 on Vista machines and I'm having trouble accessing my local Apache server (set up with XAMPP). Until recently I was able to set the XP VM's LAN settings to use a proxy server with the IP address of the host machine, but I got migrated to ADSL2+ yesterday by my ISP and now that's no longer working. To access my sites locally, I set up httpd.conf like this: PHP Code: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "C:PathToFolder" ServerName siteName.local</VirtualHost><Directory "C:PathToFolder"> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order allow, deny Allow from all</Directory> and then in Windows hosts file I add 127.0.0.1 siteName.local. So what's the best way of getting the host and VMs to talk to each other?

Updating Access Databases On Local Web Server
I am using Windows XP Pro, and since I updated to Internet Explorer 7 I am having problems getting web sites to work on my PC in Internet Explorer using the local IIS web server. These web sites are using ASP and Access databases. The two errors I get are: Operation must use an updateable query. or Cannot modify the design of table 'TABLE_NAME'. It is in a read-only database. (they are not read only!) Does anyone know how I can get this working so I can test my web sites locally before uploading them to the live sites?

Win Server 03/08; 2-6 Domains; SQL Server 05/08
I've been hunting for a web host running Windows 2003 or 2008 that fits my needs and I have been struggling to find something that meets exactly what I need. I currently have 6 domains hosted off GoDaddy and their SQL Server 2005 management is horrible. I have had nothing but issues with it, so I need to make a change. I am currently only actively supplying content for 2 of the 6 domains, so as long as I can get 2 domains out of it, I'm fine with that. I code most of my pages in ASP and my databases are all in SQL Server 2005. If they weren't so large, I would consider changing them to something a bit more common on web servers, but it is too much work at this point in time. My base requirements are: Windows Server 2003/2008 SQL Server 2005/2008 w/ at least 100 MB of database storage ASP 2.0 support 2 domains minimum 10 gigs HD storage Monthly bandwidth isn't a huge concern, but I do host some streaming media off one domain, so speed is somewhat important(Located in Chicago, IL) I'd like to keep my budget upwards of $30 a month The SQL Server is the huge snag, because I haven't seen a ton of hosting options out there that offer good packages that offer that along with everything else I'm looking for without spending $100+ a month for a dedicated server, or else I'm just not looking in the right places. Since these sites are mostly for private uses and have no resale value, the cost is out of pocket each month, so I need to keep my monthly cost somewhat low.

Where To Host A Powerful SQL Server
I have a project coming up to host a self developed database app on a web based SQL server. We have received the prepayment for the server rent for 24 months already and are currently looking for the best possible provider. Requirements: Uptime and service response is critical for us. We want an unmanaged server but require the best possible response time in case of hardware defects or network issues (DDoS). In the beginning the user base (small) will mainly be in Europe but with the tendency to grow more continents. I’d like a US east cost location with a speedy connect to EU but would consider an EU provider with a good rep. Server specs: I7 processor for fast RAM access 12GB DDR3 RAM (probably more later) 2 x SSD 80GB in Raid 1 (planning to go RAID10 on 4 disks later) Hardware Raid controller 2 TB traffic /month Windows Server Std 2003 x64 SQL Server 2008 Unmanaged. No help needed with server config. We intend to keep the same hardware for 24 months. So rent to own might be an option Large upfront payment are ok to reduce monthly costs. Hardware SLA would be nice KVMoIP would be nice Firewall: Dedicated unit would be nice but we have no experience here and would need full support.

SQL Server 2005 DatabaseMail
A client of mine took over a website and transferred it to a new server. It uses SQL Server 2005. It is coded in VB/asp.net and I have all of the web content but not the original vb source. I thought everything was working, but an important part of the site apparently uses databasemail and is hard coded to use a particular profile. Sooo.. I setup Database Mail, enabled it, created a profile and mail account, tested it, etc and got it working just fine. However, the website is trying to use a particular profile name and I have no clue what it is. My client is unable to get in touch with the former owner of the site at this point either due to political reasons. Therefore, I am getting this error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: profile name is not valid profile name is not valid at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() at RER.signup.subAddContact() in C:UsersDusanVSWebCache....etc I tried guessing obvious profile names. I tried running Network Monitor, but it can't capture the raw SQL queries due to it being a local SQL server. I looked into SQL Profiler, but I am running Workgroup Edition of SQL Server 2005 so it is not included. My next idea is to maybe place the database on a remote machine and have the website connect to it remotely so I can snoop the network traffic and maybe pick up the profile name. That is going to be a big pain however. Does ANYONE have ANY suggestions on what else I can do to pull this profile name? Is there some way to trick SQL server into accepting a wildcard for a profile name or SOMETHING? It is such a minor issue and I feel like it should be a lot easier to solve than it has been!

Server Crash On Big Sql Restore
I just got a new server the other day, installed cpanel and all my usual stuff in it. Then I started transferring some accounts off my other server on the same network. It would transfer small accounts ok but I have this one big account,. the sql is like 300 mb. It would get to the restore on it then the server would crash and be totally unresponsive. It has to be manually rebooted at the datacenter. There is nothing in any logs. At first I thought it was the load getting hi and doing it but I ran the unix bench and got the load to 14 and it didnt hurt it. It only does this on restoring big sql db. At the dc they say the screen on the console goes blank. Ive done looked and cant find anything in the box. Its actually the same exact setup I use for my other servers. So the dc is looking at it today. Has anyone ever ran into a problem like this and if so what was the cause?

ASP.net Hosting With SQL Server 2005
I have built a website based off of The Beer House template/book and am about ready to launch it. I need SQL server 2005, and ASP.net functionality. I will either use the included forum module or am considering a third party forum such as aspplayground.net. I would like to spend $10-$20/month, I don't mind paying a bit extra to have a fast loading site, but I don't want to spend too much. I would appreciate any suggestions. The database will handle the forums, the store, the users of course, and a custom database I am building for some vehicle information. To start out the database is not very big (maybe 20mb), but I expect it to grow to support the forums and users, etc. Also, I have already built a database (mdf) file on my computer through visual studio 2008. Is it true most shared hosting accounts wont allow you the access to copy and paste the database file directly? I don't really want to have to recreate all these tables on the host server.

SolarVPS Won't Let Me Install A Licensed Copy Of SQL Server 2005
After carefully choosing a VPS Host, I decided to go with SolarVPS. The VPS was created quickly. I needed a SQL server for small developemntal purposes; So I didn't want to shell out the $10/month extra just yet. I submitted I ticket to them with a copy of my CAL and Product Key: http://www.nuerom.com/sqlcal.pdf They sent me a e-mail back saying: I'm sorry but the document you have attached does not reflect that the software is licensed to you so with this limited information you provided I cannot approve the use of SQL Server 2005 Standard on your VPS. Well, I sent them the CAL and product key, so what more could they want? The copy of SQL server was recieved from a Microsoft Launch Event, Launch Tour 2005, so I didn't get a invoice. I sent them a copy of the items sent out with: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/30/61427015_af82ba821b_o.jpg And opened a chat with them. The chat conversation is attatched: http://www.nuerom.com/solarvpschat724.txt In summary, I asked what they needed to validate - they claimed they needed a invoice. I didn't understand how a invoice would prove anything, since it is something that can be generated by anyone in a few minutes. They claimed they get audited from time to time by Microsoft, so they have to make sure genuine software is running on their VPS. I offered them my MSDNAA license, since I would be only using the server for developmental purposes. I send the a PDF of the MSDNAA order; only to have them deny it again. They claimed that it wasn't valid because I paid with a paypal business account. Even though the MSDNAA terms clearly state that it is a valid license for test and developmental purposes; and that the license is perpetual. I offered to ship the DVD, CAL and BOX to them. They claimed that this wouldn't be enough to validate. (Implying, of course, that they had some reason to believe I might have stolen the DVD). At a loss of what to do; I finally contacted Microsoft to have them validate the product; partner support was very nice and directed me to the appropiate departments. I sent solarvps a e-mail back: I contacted Microsoft and recieved this information. They advised me that the only restriction on this software is that it is NOT FOR RESALE, and that I may put it in full production use. I was told that if you needed validation, you may call 800-426-9400 option 3, option 1. You may reference my name, or my phone number, which will validate my conversation with Microsoft. See also, http://download.microsoft.com/documents/useterms/SQL%20Server%20Standard_2005_English_9137cd88-ab33-48b7-ac2a-544f2ec58c4d.pdf They have yet to reply. I am at a loss of what to do; as I have other promotional software I'd like to install on that VPS; but if its this much of a hassle, I might just go with another host. Unfortunately, solarvps canceled their refund program, so I am at a loss what to do there. In particular - I feel that SolarVPS just doesn't want to authorize the SQL server because they want me to pay $10/month. This is way too much validation. Besides, as a MS partner, if they were afraid of the software failing auditing they could have called their MS Partner line to verify it was genuine software. Additionally, I felt that Bogdan Fetita, their "senior tech" had attitude that made me feel very unwelcomed. Should I just move on and find another VPS server after days of trying to find the right one? Or should I hope solarVPS will lighten up?

Most Suitable Licence For Setting Up A Shared Hosting Server? (exchange, Sql, Dns)
I have built a server so I can co-locate it to be used for shared hosting. The specification is high, compared to most dedicated server offerings, so I was considering splitting it up into different virtual machines for different purposes. The specification is: Intel Xeon 3230 (4x 2.66ghz), 8GB DDR ECC RAM, Seagate Cheetah SAS 15,000rpm (4x 147GB), Adaptec RAID 5405 (RAID 6 Array with Battery Backup), Dual on-board NIC, etc. The original plan was to use this machine as just one linux server, but I am concerned most of its potential will not be exploited. So I am exploring the possibility of setting it up as 2 Virtual Machines, installing Linux on one and Windows on the other. This way I can offer hosting for ASP and ASP.NET, and possibly MS SQL and/or Exchange depending on costs for their licences. What Microsoft licences are suitable for servers used for shared hosting? From what I can gather there are several ways of being licenced, but I can't figure out which is the most cost effective. It seems you buy the server OS edition that supports your requirements, then pay another licence per user (CAL?) - I haven't got a clue how many users I will need to have though. Then if you want to use MS SQL, DNS or Exchange you need the correct edition - and buy licences for these too. Does anyone know roughly what I should be looking to pay for what? I would ideally like to have MS SQL, DNS and Exchange - but am aware that the licence could be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth doing.

What Do You Think Of Live Support?
What do you all think of 'Live Support'? Personally, I use it. I like the friendly touch of talking to someone whom responds to my questions directly. Do you think Live Support is good for; 1. Nothing 2. Sales 3. Tech Support 4. Emergency, etc. In my experience, Live Support has often been used for technical assistance, and while this is great if you are a one man shop, it doesnt work very well with shift tech support. Sales is a bit more direct, but - I would personally still prefer a 'record' of the conversation that the client could point to. Live support may have a valid use during emergency situations, however I am doubting that the personalities that actually answer these live chats can provide any authoritative answers other than 'It'll be ok'. So, does live chat have a future in Web Hosting, in your opinion?
