Local To Live
have only done static html sites in the past, but am ready to branch out and learn php and mysql. I have watched numerous video tutorials on php,mysql, dreamweaver cs3, and how they all work together.
I have followed all the steps on the tutorials and the website works great on my local testing server, but how in the world do I get it to work live on the internet! This is probably a very stupid question but I am at the point of not caring about looking stupid. I just want to know what Im missing/ doing wrong. The website is hosted with GoDaddy, (and the domain is registered with them as well).Am I supposed to have something set up there or a different server? I have tried using ftp to transfer all files over to the domain but when I visit the domain, the php pages do not work.

Local To Live...sql Server
I have been working on an online shop locally from my machine, using Visual Web Developer and SQL server. This is working fine, but now its at the stage were i need to show a client. In order to do this i need to upload it to our servers. What i cant get my head round is the connection to the sql server, do i need to upload this too, or can i somehow point the connection string to the sql server sitting on my local machine... Is it easier just to upload an sql server? how would i go about this?

What Do You Think Of Live Support?
What do you all think of 'Live Support'? Personally, I use it. I like the friendly touch of talking to someone whom responds to my questions directly. Do you think Live Support is good for; 1. Nothing 2. Sales 3. Tech Support 4. Emergency, etc. In my experience, Live Support has often been used for technical assistance, and while this is great if you are a one man shop, it doesnt work very well with shift tech support. Sales is a bit more direct, but - I would personally still prefer a 'record' of the conversation that the client could point to. Live support may have a valid use during emergency situations, however I am doubting that the personalities that actually answer these live chats can provide any authoritative answers other than 'It'll be ok'. So, does live chat have a future in Web Hosting, in your opinion?

Live Video Streaming
A client has contacted me about live streaming. He wants to broadcast a live meeting over the internet so that other people can watch it. I've never looked in to something like this - I guess I need to find some software that will let me re-broadcast the stream - ie someone at the meeting would connect to my server and stream it up to the server, and my server would then broadcast it out to anyone who is connected. So, what sort of software should I be looking at? Are there any guides around on the internet or anything that can help me out?

Streaming Live Video
I have been looking through the forum, but I have had a hard time finding much about this topic. I am attempting to broadcast live video feed on my website and I wanted to set it up so people can view the live streaming video directly on their web browser. I use mostly Windows based servers(Windows 2003 Server and XP Pro). I have looked at different video streaming programs like flash, media player, and divx, which would be the best for what I am trying to do? Computer power and bandwidth are not an issue with my current setup. If anyone has any experience or knowledge on this I would be very grateful for your input. I would appreciate any information involving any of the steps in this process from capturing the video to having users access it on my website.

Mirroring Live Server...
I'm a web designer - not an IT guy, as such I'm not 100% on setting up servers/dev environments etc... I'm freelance and currently working in-house for a client that has set up a dev server that supposedly mirrors their live site - its a catalogue site with loads of dynamic elements. The dev site they've set up displays only the html, no images or stylesheets link up when i preview them in dreamweaver as they don't logically link to the page as the pages are templates drawn from various folders. What I want to know is is it possible to mirror a dev server exactly like the live website so the scripts etc all work as they do on the live site. I'm pretty sure it is as I've worked on dev servers before but not one like this bloody mess. The IT bods here seem to think the dev server is the best that is achievable - are they right? am I missing something??? I can't really answer any technical questions apart from i think the dev server is an apache server - what do i need to explain to the IT bods to get my point across?

Mirroring Live Drive Daily?
I would like to create an exact copy of my live drive on a daily basis via cron. Is there a good mechanism for doing this *without* taking the main drive offline? It seems like the two common backup solutions: dd and rsync both have issues in this area. I don’t think Rsync can create an exact mirror (including partitions) and dd looks like you need to unmount the drive(s) first. Both drives are of identical size and installed via the ide controller.

Apachetop Or Other 'live' Monitoring Of Apache
What's the best way to monitor apache in as close to a live manner as possible. I am hoping to get something similar to Top that would show the current number connections, maybe the URL being hit and other stats of that nature. I know I can use mod_status (either via WHM Apache Status) or outside of it, but that has to be constantly refreshed (manually or automatically) and creates GET /whm-server-status?refresh=60 HTTP/1.1 entries that kind of skew the stats, depending on how often you refresh. Is apachetop a solid choice? Any downsides? Is there a better tool to have a 'live' view of apache's activities?

VPS To Host Flash Live Chat
I tried to post this request before but my post got deleted ( I think because I was new to this forum ) hopefully this time it will get posted. I bought a flash live chat script which require a dedicated server as they say in the script requirements but I know it would work using a VPS with root access.. The script can run on both Linux and Windows OS and needs red5 and java according to the script designers such site with about 100 users can use about 500GB of data transfer per month but I am not sure if that is true or not as I haven't had the chance to test it. Hosting For Video-live & On Demand
We produce video. My clients want to put education archival video content (Windows media) for students on the web. At most 10 students a day will log on for a few hours. I also have clients that want live windows media video streaming. Up to 50 users logging in at most for a 3 hour lecture, only a couple times a year at this point. I'd like to use one company for the archival(on demand) and live web casting/streaming. Any ideas? Or should I just use 2 different hosting companies? Please tell me companies that you like and have used!

Result: There Is No Standard SOP Within Live Chat Support Admin In Hostgator
It is with a heavy heart that I am penning this. This is a result of the accumulation of indifferent live chat support admin, and the lack of a standard SOP among all the live chat admin support in Hostgator. I am not writing this due to one indifferent live chat support admin. Neither am I writing this due to one isolated case. And neither is this written to vent out my anger nor to publicly disgrace the company. I've been requesting chat support for quite a number of times, mainly due to corrupted PHP on my server, deletion of bzcompress from my reseller account, and most recently, error when my php script run the CURL function stating "cannot connect to host". I've tried raising suggestion civicly and gently across more that I can remember, hoping situation will improve but to no avail. I have been getting so many different response and answers by many live chat support admin for the same questions posed, that I wonder if they're working for the same company? At this moment of time, courtesy and politeness is the only way to ensure customer's satisfaction. But alas, that is not to be, for not everyone within Hostgator understands that. And even if they do, not everyone is following so. Will someone from the senior management please get back to me and I'll be glad to forward all the chat transcript ID and and logs and ticket raised so that corrective action and measures will be taken to ensure situation improves? To be on a fair end, I have to say that it's not all chat admin that are indifferent. There have been occassions on more than once whereby live chat support were extremely helpful and courteous as well. Paul Cr, Larry Ri are just a few of the wonderful staff that I'm glad to have talked to. in my rc.local i've got it so a program starts up automatically, this works when i restart my machine but the machine has also been crashing randomly (something which i haven't tracked down the source of yet) and when it goes up after this the program isn't started. Eth1 For Local IP
I have problem on eth1 for local IP. Eth0 is public IP behind Firewall, and eth1 is local IP for backup and for database. Every time eth1 is on, eth0 cannot be reached by ssh and http, although still can be pinged. Eth1 is also IPMI BMC port, and automatically got IP from DHCP LAN for web-based IPMI access, and the IPMI cannot be turned off. Motherboard is Tyan B7002.

Opening Up Local Access
I have a script running on my server that has access via port 1031, but I would like to block access to it from the public, and instead allow access only through a php proxy script on my server which will connect to port 1031 via 127.0.0.1 (i.e. 127.0.0.1:1031) So some may be thinking why? Currently users gain access by heading to mydomain.com:1031 . However I would now like to include adverts along side the script (but can't physically make adjustments to the script as the company that made the script has vanished of earth) So the only way I can think of doing this, is by having the adverts in an Frame next to the proxy script. So does opening up access via 127.0.0.1 just for this case, give me security problems?

Hosting: Overseas Or Local
I live in Australia and a lot of my websites get their base traffic from the United States; therefore I have a dedicated server in the United States. In a few months I will be developing a website that is mainly for Australians. I'm wondering if it would be better to seek Australian hosting just for this site or just put it on my dedicated server in the U.S. Personally I don't really notice the difference in load times between websites hosted in different countries but it may add up in the long run. The reason I am leaning towards the U.S dedicated server option is that I have full control over the server. (i.e what php modules and extensions are loaded).

How Do Install A Local Copy Of TAR ?
wasn't sure if this should go into "technical" or "programming" but I figure someone here will instantly be able to tell me... (details: I'm on a shared host with cpanel and centos 3) My hosting service techs refuse to update gnu TAR on the server even though it's several years old at 1.13 and has some know bugs that are annoying for complex calls - (basically the techs use any request like this to try to upsell me to dedicated or VPS which I don't need at my low level) So I'd like to install a "local" copy of the newer gnu 1.14 or 1.15 TAR (which I *think* is possible?) into my account and have it run instead of the shared copy? Unfortunately this is beyond my knowledge so thanks for any help in the right direction...

Managing Local Root Folder
I'm planning a website at the moment but I'm wondering about a slight issue, regarding the local root folder of a website. Currently, I'm using Dreamweaver to create a website and I have had no problems of uploading my files to a site through Dreamweaver before. But I will not have access to my computer for about one month every year. However, I have a laptop available during that month. But since my local root folder is located on my stationary computer it seems impossible for me to, in any way, use that laptop to manage my site (upload new files to the server).

DNS Issues On LOCAL Network
Okay, so here's the issue. I've been searching for a solution for about a week now, and just can't seem to find any information. The company that I work for had me switch their site live so I went through and changed the DNS information and pointed the A records to the new server running an online store. I waited and waited and waited for the propagation to finish so I could keep working on developing the site. I talked to our hosting company and they assured me that they were being pointed to the new server and there was no issue. I changed the DNS on my own computer to point to openDNS and I could see that it did in fact change. We are now two weeks into the change and we can still not view the site from our network. I am in need of any ideas you can give me! If you ping the site with the default DNS server you receive the old IP Address but if you ping it with the openDNS IP in place, you receive the IP of the new server. I've gone through and run a /flushdns, /release, and /renew. I am working from a mac so advice geared towards this would be helpful however, I do have access to several machines running XP. Again, the site has propagated across the internet, just not in our office. I look forward to and appreciate any insight that you can offer with all of your eclectic wisdom.
