Limit Bandwidth On Switch Port.
Jun 5, 2007
we want to limit the speed on a switch for several users. For example, we want:
User Bandwidth
Adrian 1Mbps
Peter 5Mbps
Luke 4Mbps
Which switches do you recomend for this? Any experiences on their use? Prices?
i know that sounds strange, but imagine Adrian only has access to the net on 1Mbps because that's all he needs.

a 48-pot switch capable of limiting the external traffic only (ingress & outgress).
Setting a cap on a port for the entire traffic will not work because I do not want to limit the speed in the local network. I just want to limit the speed towards internet.

I saw a one port KVM/IP switch, simply a little case that fits in your hand, with 2xPS/2 ports, a VGA and a network output (it didn't even require an extra power input, although that isn't a requirement). I remember it was about 55 euros (about 80USD).
Does anyone remember such a little small thing? I can't find that catalogue anymore..
If you find one with a USB port for virtual media (like 32MB..)

different 48 port switch for a rack. Any recommendations? We are currently using an old Cisco 2948G which has about 30 of the ports being used and pushes around 130mb at maximum peak through its ge port.
Its got nothing special running on there other than SNMP (if you can call that special) so guess that is my only basic requirement other than its an managed switch. Reason for change? Found a nice Cacti script to monitor the switch's CPU and its hitting 1.0 solid at peak periods in the evening which looks (well to me anyway) as 100% CPU usage which can't be a good thing.

We have a Dell 3548 Switch, and need to set SNMP to ignore local traffic from and to server xx.xx.xx.1 and xx.xx.xx.2 OR from port 20 to port 21
Think this make from Notification rules and Notification recipient under System > SNMP.. right? How?

I been looking for a new switch to use, that have few features that ProCurve switches do not have, which is namely the port bandwidth management that I can manage by controlling the bandwidth traffic by Megabit increment. Plus, anti-dos features would be nice as well.
I know that Extreme Networks have that features in 24/48 port 1U factors, but I am looking for feedback from others who knows of other switches that have that feature as well. Your input is appreciated.

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.
Apache/2.2.11 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at confidentchemicals.com Port 80
Bandwidth limit gets reset every first of month but what to do when users reached to this limit between 1 to 10 days?
we don't want to upgrade users packages or bandwidth limit rather than allocated.
why can't we reduce bandwidth limit?

I have a reseller package and when creating a new site i grossly underestimated the traffic and am now approaching my bandwidth limit already.
Im just curious what happens when i reach this limit so i know what to expect. Will my site just go down until next month comes along when my bandwidth refreshes again?

I run 10+ sites on my dedicated server. In last 7 days one of them used over 1.7 TB of bandwidth.
I can't suspend that domain because it's mine.
I can't ban the IP of those who use considerable amount of bandwidth because they are a lot.
So i think about software/mod/whatever else that limit bandwidth usage per user(IP) per day! is there any one who has experience about this situation?

i know 100/10 port can offer 100M max,
but i see a article say the performance of 100/10 port usually can not reach 100M,
if it can reach 50%,it is already very good.
because a user want to rent 50M bandwidth from me,
i worry if my switch may really reach 50M on the 100/10 port for him,
my firend ask me had better use a 1000/100/10 port for the case.
my switch is d-link des-3526.

It is possible to monitor bandwidth per IP instead of per port using Cacti?
I have been told no, but if no, how can you possibly monitor bandwidth per VPS on a host server?

I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection?
I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.
Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.
About the port connection, what this means? :
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN
Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps?
I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!
So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.
Whats do you think?

I have an office internal website and I opened a port in the gateway of my office (7080) to this website (server )'s 80 port. That makes this website open to public as office has static IP. And then when I view the site from home . it's fine. But when I tried to login, the site is using a pop-up, I guess it's http authentciation, login, I was redirected to a url without my port number any more, that stops my access to the site as obviously I would.
How can I keep my connection/port number ...?

I am thinking something like Cacti, but I don't know the code to pull that info or if it's even technically possible.

I currently have a dedicated server, which is hosting several websites. I'm happy with the service I'm getting, but I'm trying to save money. I'm paying $120/month for the dedicated server. Spending half of that each month would be great.
Right now, the websites are either static websites, or are simple database driven websites with not much traffic. My server load averages are pretty close to 0.01
I would think a VPS would be fine for my needs. However, I may have a site I will host in the future that is database driven and uses Ruby on Rails. It would probably have 10-20 users online at any given time, and maybe several hundred subscribers total.
Would a VPS still work in this instance, or should I stick with a dedicated machine?
