May 5, 2009It is possible to monitor bandwidth per IP instead of per port using Cacti?
I have been told no, but if no, how can you possibly monitor bandwidth per VPS on a host server?

However, I'm now dealing with a provider that has me really confused. This company is charging us based on 95th percentile and we're now being asked to commit to 8.5 MBPS while the server doesn't even go over 1500GB monthly bandwidth limit.
Is this correct:
- We're not using tons of bandwidth but we do have large bursts
- The company is ultimately charging you for the bursts

Dec 27, 2007I have 1 network interface with a few virtual ones. I need to find a way to monitor bandwidth. I've tried vnstat but it can't measure bandwidth with virtual interfaces.
The only thing i've seen is through packet sniffing and i was hoping for a much cheaper alternative(cpu wise).

Monitoring Bandwidth Usage For VPS
Jun 16, 2009I have a small VPS that is running only openVPN. (No http/pop/ftp/imap/smtp...) Only one port is open for the openVPN software.
I've also disabled (not running) any other networking software, so there is no apache or anything "normal" like that.
It's a plain-jane CentOS 5.3 install, used only for openVPN.
The problem is that I have no idea how much bandwidth is being used.
Since the openVPN does not track bandwidth usage, I am now looking for some other way to do it...
I am thinking that perhaps munin or cacti or something like that would be a solution?
Basically, the only statistic I need to actually monitor is bandwidth, as I don't care about disk space, load, memory, or anything else..
(The server is using VirtualVM, but since that software is insecure... the VPS control panel is not currently online, so all the normal "tools" that the VPS came with are not working.)

Jul 6, 2007I have been using webmin's bandwidth monitoring function for a while but (as anyone who's ever used it) i have a few issues:
3 huge (~250MB and growing) log files: /var/log/bandwidth, kern.log and syslog.
also the 'dmesg' only outputs these log messages:

I installed syslog-ng in hopes that i could change this behaviour but to no avail. the real problem i see is that shorewall/iptables only logs to "kern" facility...
has anyone found a way arround this? maybe even using some other firewall?

I tried installing MRTG on windows but got tired after trying for two hours. I really just need a program that can monitor the bandwidth and calculate the 95% usage but I cannot seem to find that anywhere!

Some of the servers have cPanel, some are just straight Linux (CentOS). I have seen where you can setup iptables to measure/monitor bandwidth, any other easy and effective suggestions for doing this?

My issue is that i need the ability to accurately monitor the traffic being generated (and potentially graph via mrtg) additionally, I want the ability to enforce priority and restrictions per ip address.
Whilst on the subject I also have an openvpn setup which i want the ability to rate limit each user....

if it can reach 50%,it is already very good.

I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.
Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.
About the port connection, what this means? :

I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!
So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.
Whats do you think?

Sep 4, 2009Anyone know of a monitoring package that is essentially Nagios and Cacti in one? Nice SNMP capabilities, but still basic service checks (smtp, dns, web with host, etc), and some nice reporting?
Most reporting packages I've looked at seem so overly complicated with confusing/cluttered UIs and lack plain simplicity.
All I want is to monitor these servers, use SNMP for RAID status, disk space, CPU, etc, and verify connectivity to its services and each website. Is it asking too much? I've been using Cacti and Nagios, but separately and I'd really like something that combines the two of them.
