Switch Dell 3548 - Limit Snmp Local Traffic Rules
Apr 29, 2008
We have a Dell 3548 Switch, and need to set SNMP to ignore local traffic from and to server xx.xx.xx.1 and xx.xx.xx.2 OR from port 20 to port 21
Think this make from Notification rules and Notification recipient under System > SNMP.. right? How?

a 48-pot switch capable of limiting the external traffic only (ingress & outgress).
Setting a cap on a port for the entire traffic will not work because I do not want to limit the speed in the local network. I just want to limit the speed towards internet.

We currently have a OK solution to monitor and graph our client bandwidth at the switch port. It's a great product, but we have been expanding quickly and we are looking for a solution that is a bit more scalable and user friendly. Any recommendations?
Basically we want software to do the following:Monitor/log bandwidth in/out
Graph data in some way shape or form
Provide a web interface for users to login and view bandwidth usage
Scalable and cost effective
Easy to use
Windows or Linux
If you don't feel comfortable divulging what you use, just PM me. Also, we are already aware of MRTG.

good switch to support 1Gbps in 3 servers and more in a future.
Maybe a Procurve 3400CL? I need a very stable switch.
It is important to a physical firewall too? If so what?

we want to limit the speed on a switch for several users. For example, we want:
User Bandwidth
Adrian 1Mbps
Peter 5Mbps
Luke 4Mbps
Which switches do you recomend for this? Any experiences on their use? Prices?
i know that sounds strange, but imagine Adrian only has access to the net on 1Mbps because that's all he needs.

How can I limit the traffic for shell users?
e.g. I create 5 users and each of them uses the ssh server as a proxy. I want each user to create only 5GB traffic a month. How can I do this? I've already tried iptables but they can only limit the traffic created by the user who started the ssh server

I have latest VZ panel
i have 10 containers running
i have tried everything to how i can limit each container to use bandwidth monthly , i only found a way to limit the outgoing speed/traffic , but i can't limit the traffic usage per month .
i have asked softlayer about that
Hello,
You could limit traffic on a VPS container using 3rd party-softwares.
But you need to look into these software solutions or contact your server administration company.
Anyway, what 3rd party software do you advice in installing,
What i want to do is like i limit container No.107 to not use over 200Gb container No.108 To not use over 300Gb , etc...

Will a Perc 5 raid card work in a non-dell Linux server? These cards can be found for about $100 on eBay, and are much cheaper than the Adaptec cards with similar features and ports.

is it just me or does windows firewall in Win2K3 randomly decide to block SNMP ports?... i have over 30 servers runnng Win2K3 and out of the blue yonder today 3 stopped reporting snmp data ...... the windows firewall was turned off and ICS services were not running but still ports 161 and 162 were being randomly blocked ... so now i add ports 161 & 162 to the FW and it all works but when i disable the services to be free of windows firewall ports 161 and 162 get blocked again and snmp is down [back to square 1]... so simple solution is to leave windows firewall enabled & ports 161/162 enabled rite?

SNMP enabled thermometer, hopefully one capable of reading both inside and outside temperatures. A fair bit of Googling only turned up the Poseidon 1140, which apparently is not available in the US. I figured that someone here has to be using something like this in their DC.

I am installing rtg, but it returned error
configure: error: Cannot find SNMP headers. Use --with-snmp= to specify non-default path.
I have installed net-snmp by command
yum install net-snmp net-snmp-utils
and thought snmp installed to /usr/share/snmp. However, when using configure --with-snmp=/usr/share/snmp, still the same error.

I'm starting to think they don't exist. I can query a networked OfficeJet (inkjet) via SNMP, but very few of the fields from the LaserJet MIBs seem to match. I can tell that my .1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.4.2.1.5.2.3.1.0 is at 247, but that's not terribly helpful.
I can't be the first to run into this, though? They've got to be out there... Somewhere.

I have a couple of Dell 1950s and in one of them, I have 2x Seagate 15K.5s that I purchased through Dell and I also have a spare sitting in my rack in case one goes bad, also from Dell.
I was going to be repurposing one of my other 1950s and was going to get two more 15K.5s for it, but wasn't planning on getting them through Dell (rip off?). This way, could still keep the same spare drive around in case a drive went bad in that system as well.
When I was talking to my Dell rep recently when purchasing another system, their hardware tech said you can't use non-Dell drives with Dell drives in the same RAID array because of the different firmware between them.
Anyone know if it is true? Anyone have any experience with using drives from Dell in conjunction with the same model drives from a third party retailer?

why don't you buy servers from big guys like HP and DELL? Are they too expensive, or servers are not as good as suposed to be, or something else?
Our company is buying all our computers and printers from HP, we are receiving great customer service, waranty, if something gets wrong - we had computer replaced-no problem!
Maybe some small local guys are selling cheaper and better equipment, but I have peace of mind.

I know this topic has been brought up before and I wanted to revisit this again. We are a growing hosting company looking to expand our Dedicated server offerings. So far, we have been renting servers and reselling but now we have begun colocating our equipment and are looking for hardware vendors.
Would you recommend us to...
...build our own servers using the Supermicro platform?
...purchase pre-built servers from Dell?
...purchase pre-build servers from HP?
Pricing is of major concern along with speed to provision new orders. Although we don't have a dedicated resource for putting together servers, this is something we can look into should the volume of orders increase. Scalability and Flexibility is a MUST
Thanks for chiming in...

The technical level in our org is quite low.
We would like some advice on the difference between
1. Supermicro PDSML-LN2
[url]
2. DELL PowerEdge R200
[url]
3. HP Proliant DL120
[url]
Some web hosts here in Singapore are leasing them at comparable rates.
Our research shows that the Dell and HP are comparable and the SuperMicro appears to be in a different (lower) class.
How can the servers be leased at comparable rates if they are from different classes?

Got a Dell PE 2650 that I sold last week, the guy who has bought it wants the RAC (remote access controller) working on it. Unfortunately I don't have the password for it, in order to log it on, rendering it useless.
Is there any way to reset this password? I've tried resetting BIOS and that didn't work (I believe it's on a separate system)

I have not read the Dell return policy in a long time as it was an acceptable 30 days for the most part and no restocking fees.
Its going to be difficult ordering new servers that we have not previously experienced with their now 15% restocking fee.
