LimeStoneNetworks Verification Takes Forever

Oct 28, 2009

My company ordered server on 23/10/2009 from LimeStone, and they asked for verification hence i given them all the ID that they need. After that, they told me they couldn't accept AMEX and have to pay through PayPal, i have paid since and NOW again they asked for ID again.

Why i have to verify for second time since i have posted all my ID and utility bill for first time? I don't think i need to give so much verification since PayPal has already verified my account as i owned PayPal Verified Business Account, this kind of "repeating" or double verification never happen when i order from ThePlanet/EV1 where i am looking to migrate to Limestone Networks.

This is very unpleasant experience and I don't want to wait for more than a week to get a server.

Server Taking Forever To Respond

Oct 25, 2008

I was on a 100mbps shared port with a dedicated server from FDC and I use it only for downloads. The downloads took a little long to start but once they did, were as fast as they could be.

Thinking this was definitely a shared bandwidth problem, I ordered a dedicated port of 25mbps from FDC to fix it but it seems to have gotten worse.

The website uses around 10/15mbps but it takes forever for the server to respond. Even logging into cPanel takes around 40/50 seconds for the dialog box to appear but everything is fast once I log into my cPanel.

I also hired a sys admin to look into the server and He says everything is fine. I don't know what to do. I could increase my port bandwidth higher but it'll be disappointing if I do and it's just a waste of bandwidth (and money!)

What is your backup startegy and how do you verify your backups to ensure they are not corrupt and ok ?

Im interested in cpanel backup strategies.

Hostgator Account Verification

Jun 10, 2008

I bought a hosting service from hostgator and received an email from them that I need to verify my account by calling them. I called them 7 times and they just kept saying "hello" and said they cannot hear me and hang up whereas I was able to hear them clearly. I have checked my phone by calling some friends in US and they are able to hear me clearly.

When I searched on google, I came to this forum where somebody has made a similar thread and wrote beware of hostgator. I am really confused after reading that thread. He said his website was available for 10 minutes whereas I didn't even receive my account details from them. I mean the server wasn't setup. I received a welcome email that said the server would be setup in 48 hours & within 7-8 hours, i received an email asking me to verify my account.

What should I do now? I don't even know if they have charged my CC as I can't check my CC statement till 20th.

Verification Of What Ports Are Open

Oct 27, 2007

I have used a tool called Net Tools to scan ports on my various servers to determine ports are open in the firewall through my host.

For around a decade, this tool has been accurate to determine what ports are open/closed.

I have used this tool to accurately find issues with the firewall with current host (dedicated server). The network admin says that net tools should not be trusted and even though the software claims the ports are open, they are not open.

I explained that less than a month ago, this software reflected that these ports should closed were reflected accurately as closed by scanning the ports.

Partial results:

Code:
Address Scanned: xx.xx.xx.xx

Scan Started at 10/27/2007 2:08:00 PM
Scan Finished at 10/27/2007 2:18:03 PM

Ports Scanned: 1 To 4000

Total Ports Found Open: 3794

Current Ports Found Open:
Port: 00004
Port: 00005
Port: 00009
Port: 00026
Port: 00044
Port: 00076
Port: 00083
Port: 00088
...
What are the ABSOLUTE best tools/ways that I can confirm that the ports are truly not accessible?

What It Takes To Be An Unmanaged Linux Vps Admin

Aug 27, 2007

my previous experience has been shared, all operations are done by panels and ftp.

as some budget unmanaged vps is in my budget range (sub $10), i would really like to give it a go. but as i have no experience at all, i m not sure if i can manage it well. so i m here to ask, what do i need to know, what is the skill set to be an unmanage linux vps admin.

i am not a linux expert, but i've been using suse at work for java development, and trying out ubuntu at home. i know some basic skills like getting packages and install them. use pico to edit configurations files.

what i don't know is: what packages to get, and what config files to edit and how.

but as long as there's some tutorial for me to follow, i think i should be able to do it.

The Facts / What It Takes To Actually Stop A DDoS..

Jun 22, 2007

I've seen many posts in the past few months about people under attack who were not able to handle things themselves, and who made statements along the lines of DDoS mitigation services that one has to pay for are too expensive.

First, I will state that my company does offer those services, and they are not cheap. We offer DDoS mitigation services for hosting/colocation/internet providers who can then resell it to their customers. I state this so that you know that I do have a bias here, though everything I state below is fact.

1. There are free open source tools that can help. Apache modules, IPTables scripts that extract info from netstat or syslog, and I know one guy who is puting together a kernel module. Most of these can stop small scale attacks, and are quite interesting to set up - if you like the technical end of things.

2. Most botnets have more than enough zombies to overpower #1 above.

3. If you have a 100 MBPS pipe to the internet, it doesn't take 100 MBPS of traffic to saturate the pipe and take it down. Enough small packets can overload a router's ability to process, and 10-20 MBPS of traffic can take out the router.

4. There may be a few ways to deal with this, though the best in my experience has been to place an intrusion prevention system (IPS) in front of the router. I have a number of friends in the industry who work at companies where malware is analyzed, and where they work with law enforcement to try and identify the attacking parties. This can be a lengthy process and will not often get a site / router back up quickly, though can be very nice in the long term.

5. Not all IPS are equal. I'm not going to name brands, but I've seen one $50,000 box that had gigabit links die after about 80 MBPS of DDoS traffic. If you're looking into IPS, make sure you compare what they actually do, and talk to people who have implemented them.

6. The majority of the IPS that we manage for our customers and that we implement when we have a new customer under attack are from TopLayer. There are three reasons for this; Their IPS actually works the way you would expect it to (the gigabit model can handle a gigabit of DDoS traffic); If there is something that the IPS can't block, we call their dev team who will work with us to figure out a way to block it; And they give us the best deals.

7. Implementing an IPS is not cheap. The suggested retail price for a gigabit level IPS is about $80,000 USD. Consider that a hosting/colo/service provider who has a two gigabit pipe will need two of these.

8. Managing an IPS takes a special skill set. The people with this skill set are usually expensive to hire as employees, and while I've known a few service providers where the chief technical guy (often a partner in the company) has been the one to manage the IPS, this guy has a lot of other important things to do, and doesn't usually want to be woken up at 2am every few days when there's a significant alert from the IPS.

9. Contracting out IPS management and monitoring can run anywhere between $1,000 and $2,000 per month depending on service options, response times, and contract length. This will usually include remote monitoring of the IPS from a security operations center (SOC), and a lot of escalation options on how to deal with attacks.

10. If an attack is using mechanisms that can get past IPS protections (I will not list them here to give people ideas on how to get around IPS protections, though if anyone is in the field and would like to talk about this I'd be more than happy to do so), then there will need to be escalation options at additional fees from other companies who specialize in that particular area. If subscribing to managed services such as #9 above, then these options should be listed with pricing knowledge available to the customer beforehand. In fact, the company offering the managed IPS service should manage the interface between their customer and the escalation company (we certainly do, and that's one of the things that our customers have been very happy about).

11. Considering #7 through #10 above; the cost of buying/leasing an IPS, managing the IPS and/or paying service fees, and escalating technical work in the event that there is something outside the scope of what can be mitigated using the standard tools, it is more than reasonable for a service provider to charge a significant amount of money to their customers for protection readiness, attack mitigation, and emergency setup fees in the event that there is a situation where a customer is being attacked, needs the service immediately, and has not been paying for protection.

12. A service provider will turn off (null route) their customer when the impact of an attack affects the rest of their customer base. If an attack takes out a full 2 GBPS pipe that they have for all their customers, and null routing one customer is the way to keep the other 1,000 customers up, then that one customer will be null routed. It is a sound business decision. In cases like this, there are options for how to deal with that customer, and that customer will have to decide if they are willing / able to pay for said options.

Apache Takes All The Server's Ram With Child Processes

Mar 22, 2008

I do a ps aux, and get a bunch of:

/usr/sbin/httpd

Each one takes up like 4% of the available ram - and when the ram is gone, the server dies (it doesn't have a swap file - half the time you can't even log in to it), and you have to reboot Apache.

I thought of limiting maxchilds, but would that break something else?

Should I just make a swap file? Will that defeat the point of creating child processes?

LimeStoneNetworks Experience

Jan 14, 2009

My Review / Experiances of Limestonenetworks
My Advise Avoid like the plauge
01-07-09 01:14 PM
I placed an order for a server
01-08-2009
Server is ready
Orginal Config
DotnetPanel
Windows Web 2008

I had problems from the start
IIS Not starting correctly
Dotnetpanel issues including adding websites.

So I fixed what I could and then employed someone to do the work.
Afterlooking around I found someone who looked proffessional and told me he could do the work.

He got back to me after a few hours and said their were problems with the server OS and DotnetPanel install.

It would take longer to fix but he would try
After A day or so, he sent me and email stating he was unable to get it to work correctly and said the entire OS needed to be reinstalled.
So I contacted LSN and told them about the problems I was having and decided to ditch the Windows 2008 Web server for a more roboust soloution.

I went for the classic Centos and Hypervm soloution.

LSN happy loaded my server with a fresh OS and I proceed to employ my normal guy to install and configure the server
AV went on
firewall went on
Lex went on
Hypervm went on
IP Address Binded to network adapters.

But all the VPS we setup only had the "local lan adapter IP" making them inaccessiable from the outside world.

After somemore looking at the matter I resorted to contact LSN and get them to remove /change the interfaces.

This gave the VPS the external IPS but were still not connectable from the outside world. so far I spent 65$ on the orinal comapny who looked at setting up the web 2008 server additioanl 45$ on a diffrent tech to confirm the fault and been billed for a second money at singlehop.

so I contacted "customer support" and all I wanted was a refund, even if it was parcial. I just wanted a refund. I lost out on to much money and to many hours sitting infront of the computer typing up support contacts.

Please read the transcript below I strongly advise you not to use LSN they are not a helpful company

You are now chatting with ryan
ryan: Hello, thank you for visiting Limestone Networks! How may I assist you today?
ibby@: Hello Ryan, I want to make a complaint.
ryan: Oh no! What appears to be the issue? ....

Limestonenetworks.com - New Account

Aug 11, 2008

after reading the complete thread about Limestone's TOS and weighing their latest server offering, I took the plunge and just spent $160 on a monthly server.

My email from them is dated today at 6:44 pm.

Let's see how long it takes to get this server in my hands. Nothing special in the order, an extra hd for backup, that is it.

I'm a newbie here but not a newbie to unmanaged servers. If this one goes off without a hitch, I'll move a few sites from a box I currently have a ManageMyBox (no problems with them, at all, just looking for a datacenter closer to home and this seemed like a good deal).

Limestonenetworks.com - My Review

Mar 29, 2008

I am very happy go give everyone a review of limestonenetworks.com

Here is My story!

I was in a bunch and needed a VPS server because My other one went down unexpectedly, so i needed a new server in under 5 hours. I looked all over, and came upon one very special company, Limestonenetworks.com. I placed the order, and selected to have HyperVM/OpenVZ installed. The server was setup in 3 Hours! This was the fastest setup time for a dedicated server I have ever seen. When I submit a support ticket, I have a response within 30 mins. This is truly one of the best datacenters ever! Their staff is very helpful! To be honest, I am so pleased with them, I just now ordered a second server from them! Yes, You do pay a bit more, but you definatly get what you pay for, and ill tell you what, this extra 2 cents is worth it all the way!

I would recommend Limestonenetworks.com to ANYONE!

Site IP Address Change Takes 48 Hours To Work

Apr 10, 2008

I changed my sites IP address via cpanel, but now it doesn't show up in a web broswer, I check out cpanel's website for information about this issue, and they posted this:

"It may take up to 48 hours for DNS servers to register the change and the site may not be associated with the new IP address during that time period."

is that true? change the sites IP address will take 48 hours to show up? I figured since it was all local IP stuff, it'll be a instant change and working instantly. since the name servers are all the same, ect.

anyone shed some light. I just wanted to know if I should give it a day to start working? or as of right now, I feel like I need to fix a cpanel error... but if its true, then everything is ok

Startup Review - LimestoneNetworks

Nov 1, 2009

My first ever post on WHT and I am happy its a positive one. These are a few words I have to say in favor of people at LimestoneNetworks.

I ordered a Intel Core2Quad Q6600 dedicated server with them with upgrading most of the resources to the topmost at about 6 AM CST this Friday. They recently included a Fraud Check in their TOS which I was not aware of but only became notified once I had signed up. It involved uploading the CC images and a Govt ID.

Btw: their new control panel Rockware actually Rocks !

I uploaded the docs promptly and since chat was offline I called them up and got connected with a Support rep. He told me that a Sales rep will check on it at 8 AM CST. At 8 AM, one of the sales rep promptly acknowledged the ticket for verification and it had the comments of a 24-hour turnaround, which scared me a little.

Wonder ! Wonder ! Since all my stuff was verifiable and without any issues... I got reply within 20 mins stating my server was being sent for provisioning.

Another wonder ! another 20 mins and my server was showing the server in my Rockware CP as being built. I was pressing F5 like crazy and everytime I saw something new in my CP regarding my server. Which is like the most rapid updates I have seen ever !

Overall, even after the verification delay, I got my server in 4 hours !

Subsequently I had to open some tickets to them for issues that were from my side and 100% (yes 100%) of the time, someone responded within 5 mins.

Hoping to post a similar (if not more) positive review after couple of months.
