Leaving 1and1 Need Suggestions

My employer has decided to let me move thier sites to a new hosting company. I can finally get rid of 1and1.

I have just over 50 domains with about 25 that had sites. I was paying $30 a month for hosting on a shared Linux server for these sites. The sites are small and can be put on another shared plan.

One thing I do need is PHP to MS SQL. 1and1 did not support MS SQL from PHP. I also would like to pay no more than what I was paying. The only good thing I can say is that I have had 100% uptime with 1and1.

1and1 Another Disgusted Customer - Suggestions?
The server was going down every week or so since Christmas when I bought it. I re-imaged it, still going down. 3 times in fact this week. The logs say nothing out of the ordinary. I'm sure it just has to be hardware fault, but thier customer support takes ages to answer, are useless, pass you around drom department to department, and are not allowed to make outgoing calls! I'm halfway through a 12 month contract I bet it even says the uptime is not guarenteed as it's my root server....

Anyway, can anyone recommend (yes I've googled but want something specific) a good company with a good record that do plesk, because I've got used to it! Or any suggestions how to ditch 1and1 or get them to change the actual server?

Leaving Your Dedicated Server For VPS
Most people get a dedicated server when they need a large amount resources, which are hard to get on a VPS. However the development of new virtual data centers which provide web hosting services from highly available and scalable networks of computers (Clusters and etc.) makes more affordable for everyone to use a virtual machines (or virtual servers depending of the virtualization method) instead of buying hardware. So would you consider to leave your physical dedicated server and to move to a HA virtual environment?

Leaving Rackspace, Advice For Layman Needed
After 7 years with Rackspace I have decided to leave for better and cheaper service elsewhere. The final straw (after a couple of years of tolerating increasing prices and decreasing support) was a ridiculous quote from them for adding 1Gb of RAM.

I have read in the Forums about people having similar feelings, and there is advice here about where to go to instead. But I am a *total layman*, needing as many support services as possible (rebooting, backing up, etc.) so that I don't have to worry about anything really. So a lot of the advice here is over my head! Can anyone suggest where I should take my business?

Zone.net Review -- Leaving After A Year With Them
First, while my sites aren't currently on Zone (I have moved them away), it is easy enough to prove I have been a customer, because there a numerous posts on here where Sean and I discuss things, including in the Benchmark thread where he encouraged me to rerun the benchmark after they moved me to one of their faster Dell nodes, about a year ago.

Ok, I am someone that likes to give companies 2nd and 3rd chances and benefits of the doubt. But, I can no longer do that.

About a year ago, or a little over, I needed to move my vBulletin site off of shared hosting, because it was becoming unreliable. Fast one minute, slow the next. After reading lots of reviews and asking questions, I was told I could probably get by with a 384MB or 512MB VPS. At the time, Zone was getting very good reviews and touted as having really fast equipment. So, I took the plunge.

Because I not only didn't want to be memory bound, but also wanted the greatest possible CPU share (not that I needed it, but to make sure I didn't see slow downs caused by other sites like on shared hosting), I went for a 1152MB SLM package.

In the very beginning, things went pretty well, but I wasn't overly pleased with support times when I submitted a ticket. It could be anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours for a response, and then sometimes longer to resolve, BUT whenever they did resolve it they fixed the problem, and as I often asked for an explanation (I was trying to learn how to do some of this stuff on my own), the techs typically gave me a nice overview of what the problem was and how it was fixed.

Bottom line, I wasn't happy with how long it took to respond, but when they did, they were thorough and polite.

In the months that followed (early last year) a few things happened. First, I started to have VPS problems, which was always related to other VPS's on the machine hogging resources. As I had guaranteed RAM and should have as much CPU as anyone (I bought the largest package for this reason), I was told that the Virtuozzo software didn't protect a node from one VPS overloading the I/O, so that was the problem. This started to happen with increased frequency, and two problems occurred in terms of support.

First, since they were slow to respond (now starting to be int he 2-4 hour for initial response time frame), my site would be experiencing high load times and sluggish performance or at times even unreachable, and support would take hours to respond, and then might look at it and say "everything looks fine", and I would have to update the ticket multiple times with load averages from top, before they would finally investigate and say, "another VPS was compromised, but it is fixed now, you shouldn't have anymore problems". The problem was that it took hours for the initial response, which was almost always "we don't see a problem", until I 'proved' there was a problem, then they investigated the other VPS's on the node and addressed it.

Second, many issues they had to "forward to admin". Now, whenever that occurred and Sean worked on it, he was a pleasure to deal with and typically fixed the problem, but it got to the point where it seemed like almost all tickets wound up with "will need to forward to Admin" and Sean apparently was overwhelmed and it cut sit waiting for admin for some time.

Now, at this time I should say that the ONLY reason I hung with Zone as long as I did was because Sean went out of his way to try and help me in every possible way. Gave me his cell phone number, told me to call day or night if there was a problem/down time, etc. He moved my VPS on to a node that didn't have VPS's overloading the I/O and I was very grateful for his support, even if he was addressing problems that were not of my own making.

On a number of occaissions, both on here and via email, I was told how Sean understood about the service problems, and they have done xyz to fix them. I was assured that in
the coming months, I would see a completely different level of service from support. However, the support continued to go down hill.
I just typed a couple more instances, but deleted, because I felt this was getting too long, so lets fast forward.

Ironically, one or two days before zone had that 4 day outage on a node that so much was written about, I emailed Richard Alvarez, who appeared to be the man in charge. I gave him multiple examples of poor support (some he termed embarrassing after investigating) and told him how they had gone from a company with a great rep on WHT, to one that is referred to as having fast servers and horrible support. Anyway, he talked about how they were going to improve and standard stuff, and then bam a day or two later, the node is down. While I wasn't on that node, I was on the node they were using to move nodes off to as they were trying to bring sites up. All those times Zone.net was unreachable, I was unreachable because I was on the same node as Zone's main site.
So, while my node didn't have a hardware problem, for four days, my site was going up and down, and support wasn't responding.

At that point, I couldn't risk my primary site (a Broncos football message board on zone), so I got a leased server from hivelocity (became gunshy of VPS's) and moved my message board to HiVelocity, but left a handful of other sites my second VPS with them in their Miami datacenter. As I had been assured by Richard, and then Sean who resurfaced, that they were going to make major changes and there would be an announcement in a week or two about the changes (this was in November and still nothing), I decided to keep my small sites on the Miami VPS and see if the support improved.

Starting in December, I started getting MYSQL crashes. Apache would still be running, but my wordpress and other DB backed sites would get DB errors. On I believe three occaissions I put in tickets and was told "we have fixed this error, it won't happen again" or something to that effect, and it did.

I was growing tired of the same old support problems, either very long waits for response, or failure to fix problems. Finally, on January 2nd, sql crashed again. I put in a "site down" ticket and waited two hours, and nothing, so i bumped the ticket, then bumped the ticket after 3 1/2 hours, still not even a reply. After 3 1/2 hours, I stated that once the problem was fixed, I wanted an explanation from Sean or Richard as to why a "site is down again" high priority ticket goes 3+ hours without a response.

Bump it again at 4 hours, state I am going to bed and hope it is fixed when I get up.

However, i decide I can't do this, as I have had some tickets go 12 hours with zone without resolution or response, so at this point I post an update to the ticket that after 4 1/2 with no response, I state that i am attempting to restart the VPS and then if it comes up, I will begin moving my sites to another host (to my HiVelocity dedicated).

At the 5 hour mark, I update the ticket and state that I have begun migrating my sites to another host, so please do not mess with the server in any way, and to forward this ticket to Sean and Richard.

Finally 6 hours and 58 minutes after I submitted the ticket and with all the updates I described above, including stating that I have just moved all my sites/cpanel account off of my VPS, I get this response:

Hi,
I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused, the servers Mysql is performing fine and I can access the domain [url]well from my end. The domain broncos07.com is not resolving to the IP and it has DNS problem, you need to contact the name server registrar. If you cannot access the working site [url]then you should be having some network issues on your end. Thank You.
Regards,
Binny E.
ZONE.NET

This sums up how zone support has been for quite some time, and what Richard Alvarez deemed embarrassing (when referring to similar support responses). Binny clearly never even read any of the updates, or possibly didn't understand. It is my belief that Binny and Ravi, seemingly the only guys that address tickets these days, do not fully understand English, as it is the only explanation for some nonsensical responses.
So, now I am fed up. I get a VPS with futurhosting to permanently house the sites I moved to my dedi on a temp basis. I move them over and once all is fine, I put in a ticket with zone to cancel both of my VPS's and also an explanation of why, and ask that Richard and JEffrey (the guys that seem to be in charge) see it. I state do no bill my card again.

I put in the ticket to cancel the VPS's on 1/13, and 48 hours later I get an email stating since I haven't updated it in 48 hours, the ticket has been closed. I go and reply to it, reopening it, and again, get no reply for 48 hours. Bottom line, they have still not replied to my cancellation ticket that I entered on 1/13. Then, I get a bill, I reply to the email (which creates a billing ticket), stating I canceled my VPS, not to charge me. Same thing, the ticket is never answered and is closed after 46 hours.
I don't like to bad mouth companies, but people looking for a VPS provider should know that the support from Zone.net has become horrible. Not only can it take hours (7 on my last "SITE DOWN" critical support ticket), but the quality of the support is also now greatly lacking.

At this time, after 11 days, I can't even get them to acknowledge my support ticket about wanting to cancel both VPS's that I have with them.

I cannot recommend this company to anyone looking for a VPS provider.

I Need A Windows VPS Suggestions
Hi, I am looking for a windows VPS provider. Ideally with servers in the USA. I am currently TRYING to register with cheapvps.co.uk, but until now I have been unsuccessful. I registered 9 days ago, and they have not yet been able to provision it yet at cheapvps. Every time I send a message asking about my server I get a reply from Paul or Russ with a one-liner like "I'll have someone look at it", "I've asked them to fix it" "It takes 24 hours" "etc", always one lines, not a single explanation.

I will give them some more time, cause honestly I hope they get to set up the server and give me the great service I have read so many people in this forum rave about, but right now I am starting to look for alternatives just in case cheapvps cannot handle my request (a standard config from the options they offer). As I said hopefully its just a perfect storm once in a lifetime type of situation which I unluckily had to go through....but I have not received any explanations yet...just one liners.

Suggestions For SSL Certificate?
My online store is almost ready to publish and Im trying to work my head around this SSL thing.

So through reading on here Ive determined that only the cart or PII areas need to be secured, not the entire site.

My host provided a free SSL cert but I discovered that it is a domain verification SSL only and there is no "clickable seal" or business verification. Verification is important however Im not sure I need an EV cert (nor that I can afford it).

Im looking for business verification, clickable seal, 128/256, 2048bit, free reissue.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a SSL cert and what I might need? There was someone in the ads forum offering a GlobalSign OrganizationalSSL cert for $100yr. Does this seem like a good deal? There isnt a lot of feedback about GlobalSign on the net.

I was wondering what solution would you suggest for mail server? For now I have a powerful server with postfix that sends around 12000 emails per day (using the php mail function at every action).

Is there a better solution? Should i get another server and relay to 2 servers?

Is there any tools to check if the server is able to handle all emails or if I need another server.

Lunarpages And Hostgator Reviews, Suggestions?
We have several different websites, and trying to spread them out to different datacenters and companies to find a good fit (after a fire at one datacenter had us down for days).

We first had HostGator (semi-dedicated account when they had those) and our main problem initially was them shutting the site down when it used too many resources and them putting up a contact billing message for our customers at the peak of an email campaign that sparked the high resource usage. After that heated frustration, we got on a dedicated account with them and haven't really had any/many problems since. So can't complain too much there other than wishing we got the dedicated first and for them to have used a more diplomatic way of transferring us to a higher account level when needed than the message most customers saw during the transition.

When The Planet had that fire that knocked servers down for days, we were effected with our HostGator server. Not that it's to be expected again, but wanted to get a different dedicated server for our other sites to have some options in case of disaster and having multiple servers/companies to move things around if needed.

So we then got a dedicated server with Lunarpages. I was not unhappy with their customer support response as they've been fairly prompt IMO (at least compared to some other comments I've read around since) but we seem to have never-ending troubles at first with SSL installation (self-install and then them installing) and then general domain DNS, resolving and configuration problems. We call them literally every day as it goes down every day (server up but site not resolving) and they get it back up and then it goes down again for whatever reasons yet to be determined apparently. Not sure if different techs doing something different each time, or server being hacked, or what. It's running essentially the same stuff I believe that's working on the other dedicated server but with different graphics mostly.

So the inability to get that figured out has us searching for a new dedicated server. Otherwise, I think we'd be happy there if it just stayed working. Here's what we have/require:

- Multiple domains each with own SSL certificate.

- php and mysql needed with highly-customized oscommerce scripts running on each domain that use a lot of queries and resources.

- cpanel or something similar preferred for admin.

- About 1000 visitors on each domain per day.

- Need some tech support for resolving problems when they come up or would just buy/manage server ourselves.

- Budgeted for a step above the low-end dedicated server level for many companies, but not over $300 a month looking at the market.

We are looking at a couple different hosting companies but haven't used any of them previously. Would still like to try another company for the other server before putting both on HostGator but having bad luck so far. We are considering:

- InMotion (advanced dedicated server account). I've communicated with sales/support and seem incredibly responsive as all comments I've read, but not a ton out there on them.

- Fused Network

- SteadFast Networks

- Gigenet

- LiquidWeb

Probably in that order from initial research, but hard to know what to believe sometimes. Sometimes you have to just find out for yourself, but hoping for suggestions in regards to the best bet to try next for our situation. Already have read some helpful information from others about some of the hosts previously here, but sometimes things change over time (as it seems like with Lunarpages then and now). Hopefully our experiences with HostGator (both positive and negative) and Lunarpages helps others out too.

Single Server Hardware ... What Are Your Suggestions?
Based on todays equipement I know a person can spend Thousands on a good server, I'm looking to build my own and just want some advice on which way to go.

I'm thinking of just building the server pc in one case and the hard drive setup will be in a seperate case with the following:

3ware 9690SA-8E controller
Mass-Storage 8x by A-Tech Fabrication for a case
8 - SATA2 SEAGATE 1TB (7200rpm) 32MB on the controller as RAID

Can anyone give advice on what would be a good setup if you were running 1 single server for local businesses. I don't want to hear just pay for a provider as I've heard that one before now I'm looking to know what hardware setup you would run I like to play and learn. Even though sometimes the headache playing isn't as much fun as we sometimes may have hoped.

What are m/b and processor options for running a server?

What is min. amount of ram a person should run using linux and cpanel?

Should linux be on a max. amount of space for root and server files on a seperate mnt?

What connection up/down would be min. for usage of about 5gig/month?

Suggestions For Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 - 500 and then eventually up to 1,000 users onine at one time. The main attraction will be the user forums and profiles. I don't plan on having any videos or anything like that, but I will install a mambot that will integrate Google Video, etc.

I am trying to pick a VPS provider and from what I have read so far, I have kind of narrowed it down to a few places:

Spry.com
vpslink.com
knownhost.com
mediatemple.net

From reading alot so far, I would imagine I would need at least 256-512MB of RAM. Plesk sounds like a good control panel since I won't be reselling any of the space. Webmin sounds too hands on, and I know a little bit, but not a lot. The backup option that comes with Spry.com sounds tempting, but VPSLink has attractive price points. Mediatemple.net also gives you 1TB of bandwidth, a very attractive option.

I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 -
As long as the site can run MySQL, I am happy. Joomla!, statistics software (any suggestions) and WordPress and that is about it as far as applications.

Any suggestions on what plans or who I should go with? My budget is about $t50 a month.

Proper Procedure When Leaving A Host - Do You "nuke" Your Space

It's just occurred to me that I've never really abandoned a host before and that I have a lot of stuff on there I don't want in the wrong hands.

Sure, hosts should be legally responsible and wipe the space but why trust what you don't know for a fact (I even have one host that had stuff hidden in my "fresh" account, buried in the logs, so apparently they were reusing something along the line as a template).

Should I, and how would I, wipe out the space properly?

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost.

I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there.

I received this response:
have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service.

In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory.

It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link.

Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM.

For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS?

I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

1and1 Getting Better
1and1 has always getting a lot of fudge here on WHT and a lot of times they deserve it. In the past their support has totally sucked. However, I have noticed lately that their support is actually improving A LOT!! I've been getting responses within a few hours and that is really good considering it would take days before. Also, in the past their responses were just generic and non-helpful but lately they have actually provided personal help and attention and fixed all the issues I've had. I know this should be expected from a registrar/webhost but I have to say I'm quite impressed. They are after all a really budget company.

Btw, I use them for all my domain registrations and also have a small hosting package with them for my static small sites. I'm not brave enough to put my more busy sites there yet.

Changing From 1and1
I have been with this hosting company for almost five years now and until today the service has been excellent. I am having massive ftp issues. I have 41 different domains that I run for a variety of projects. Needless to say I keep each website in a different folder. I just tried to switch one of my blogs from blogger to wordpress. Blogger won't let me have my domain back and keeps blocking it with a 404 error. But that is a separate issue. I tried using one of my extra domains and pointing it at my new blog folder. But it keeps bouncing back to my root directory. I contacted 1and1 and they reset the server, but now they are blaming me for the issue. I can access the blog through it's subdirectory but I can't post the blog there.

Anyways, I am not ready to move over all of my websites, but I do want to move my blog to a new host. I am mainly hoping that I can escape 1and1 and blogger in one move if I change the host of this one website. It's funny I have been happy for years and recommended them to friends, but now I am very disappointed. Can someone recomend a reliable host? I am looking for one with a cheap lowend package to start off. If I end up staying I will need a lot of bandwidth as I have a podcast that had a lot of traffic. Basically, there are so many companies that I just can't tell which ones are reliable. That's my main concern. Also I use SQL a lot. Thanks!

Is A 1and1 VPS Right For Me?
Well, my current hosting at streamline.net is expiring in a couple of months and I don't want to stay with them for a minute longer.

I have about 5 domains that I require hosting for, and another few which will be aliases to these domains.

I had a look at fasthosts.co.uk and would need a separate hosting package for each domain.

I then looked at 1and1's virtual private servers. These hopefully fit the bill as it is quite cheap at £15/pm.

http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/VpsRoot

I was wondering if this fits my needs. Would I be able to host several websites here? Or just one domain?

Also, they say that I have root access, will I be able to do just about anything on there then? E.g. install imagemagick, edit php.ini, enable wildcard DNS and use mod_rewrite for subdomains... etc.

Given that I have root access to the VPS, how can it be that they say the max number of email accounts is 150, what else is restricted?

I'm a bit confused as to what sort of abilities a VPS will give me. 1and1's site doesn't explain what I could use it for as well as I would like.

Then the tech support said he would tell their computer department, and 13 hours later, my server is still frozen and I cannot log on.

I would not and do not recommend 1and1 to anyone. It was a very bad exerience and I will always stay away from them. Sorry 1and1 but your service isn't all that great.

1and1 Vs. Liquidweb And Others
I have about 30 websites under my belt right now with ixwebhosting.com. I have 1 account but nearly 30 sites linked to that account - yes yes, means it is VERY slow because a) it's on a shared server, and b) there are literally thousands of sites on my server (did a reverse Ip lookup)

I've just recently started a new forum which has taken off, to the point where the database cannot be pulled up half the time because soo many people are on the server. This is NOT good. I'm missing out on revenue that could be gained, and since I'm advertising/marketing this site, it sucks even more!

So my question is - I'm goin to move all of my websites to a dedicated server. I thought about a VPS, but for $30 more monthly I can have a dedicated with a gig of memory, yadda yadda yadda...

Should I use 1and1.com? They are $99.99/monthly, or should I use someone else? Who else can compete at that price? I get everything I need with 1and1, including enough hard drive space, enough ram (for now), control panel, etc...

I'm a n00b in the dedicated server world, so help would be great. I plan to purchase a dedicated server within the next few days, and so far 1and1 has been my best bet when it comes down to money.

1and1 Not Billing Me
For some odd reason 1and1 hasn't billed me yet and it's been beyond the 10 days it usually takes after the invoice. I currently have my billing option set to automatically get billed through Paypal. I emailed them a few times and never got a response. Is anyone else having this problem? I don't want my services to get shut down because they can't bill me.

1AND1 Party!
I guess they have a system in place so that they will automatically be directed calls if the "rep" is not busy and my call got directed to a desk with no operator and I heard them having a party in the background. How completely professional!

Also, their telephone system is completely broken and you'll always get a pissed off sales rep in the middle of the day because they will automatically be directed calls because their hold system is broken.

1and1 For Use As A Hotlink Host?
Does anyone have experiences with using 1and1 shared servers as a hotlink host?

I see they have a $4.99 plan that includes 120GB diskspace and 1200GB bandwidth.

To rehash my other thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=766602), I'm looking for a separate hosting account to store/hotlink some FLV files that will be used by my client's websites on other servers.

For those of you with experience with 1and1:

How much bandwidth/diskspace did you use?
Did your account ever get suspended for resource/bandwidth usage?
If so, how much were you using of what you were supposedly promised?
What was the performance of their shared servers?
Did you ever have a problem with downloads timing-out?
Look, I'm under no illusion that any company is going to let me use $100 worth of bandwidth for only $5 a month, but I'm not looking to use the whole 1200GB.
At most, I could see myself using less than half (~500GB) of what is offered in their package.
So from those with the experience, what is the verdict on using 1and1 in this manner?

DNS Conundrum With 1and1.com
This is the problem I'm facing:

I have a domain registered with 1and1.com (klenwell.com). I have a VPS running Linux with a different host. I have configured bind to run as my nameserver for the domains ns1.klenwell.com and ns2.klenwell.com. (I have run dig to verify the bind is configured properly.)

The problem: when I try to change the primary and secondary name servers for klenwell.com at 1and1.com using the form provided by the 1and1 control panel, I get the following error message:

The name server is not sufficient or hasn't been approved.Subdomains of the original domainname as name servers for the original domainname need a fixed IP! Please refer to the FAQ (keyword: Glue domain)!

So I enter the IP address and I get the following error message:

The name server is not sufficient or hasn't been approved.

So I called 1and1.com support hoping they could fix this. But it appeared that the young woman who took my call was unable to comprehend the problem (she kept referring to Plesk -- which had nothing to do with the issue here).

I was prepared for this and hoping to get passed up to someone who knew what she was doing. But before that could happen, after going around in circles with Level 1 support for about 10 minutes, I mysteriously got disconnected! (I guess I had used up my time quota.)

Am I SOL here? It seems like a chicken-and-egg problem. I can't change the DNS settings until 1and1 is able verify that my nameserver domains are valid. But they won't be valid until 1and1 changes them. And 1and1 support seems totally incapable of providing any help.

I know I could use a free third-party service, but I wanted to have some practice running my own nameserver. Also I want to be able to add subdomains myself. (Right now, I have to manually add them through 1and1.com and am limited to 5.)

Any help is appreciated. Otherwise, I'll just use this as an opportunity to vent my frustration at 1and1.com's support. <sigh>

1and1 :: Suspended My Domain
had a nice run with them for almost 3 years probably never had a problem until now; cancelled account today.

they suspended my domain (it was a free domain that came with the account) and service for hosting "pornography."

the abuse email says that i am violating

You agree and warrant that Your Data shall not violate any Laws concerning obscenity and shall not contain or link to any pornography, or depictions of bestiality, rape, sexual assault, violence, torture or disfigurement, or other content deemed objectionable by 1&1, in its sole discretion.

the link they sent me that was in violation was [mydomain]/index.php#HARDCORE_XXX_SEX_39948382_JPG.JPG

yes, a nonexistant anchor on a blank page. not an actual file.
in addition to that; abuse/billing/etc is taking more or less a week to reply to my emails.

1and1 Server Ping
So I'm wondering what if anything I can do to get a better ping from my 1and1 server.

It's located in Wayne, PA and my ping floats around 70ms and I'm in South Lake Tahoe, CA. I only ask because there are servers with Peer1 hosted in New York, NY that give me a ping around 20ms.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Its a Windows Server 2008 Web Box.

1and1.co.uk - Your Thoughts And Experiences?
Hope this is the right place for this question. I'm interested in hosting with 1and1.co.uk as they are good value and allow multiple domains to be hosted (incidentally, will nosy people be able to figure that the different domains are hosted on the same package?).

Just wanted to hear your thoughts and experiences? It seems cheaper to host on their American site compared to the British site. Am I allowed to do that?
