Host Our Own Server ...
Jan 9, 2008
We currently have a web based apllication running on a web server, in addition we have two servers running as back up. The application running on these servers is business critical, so important we have 100% or near as up time.
We were wondering what is required to run these servers from within our own office, i.e. is it possible/practical/affordable.
We are only a reasonable sized company so cost is important.
Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so what costs might be involved, what we want is total physical access to our servers.

I was wondering if it's possible to transfer your site from a server to an addon domain on a webhosting plan at hostmonster.com? And is it possible to restore it back?
Like for an example I bought a dedicated server and setup the domains:
domain1.com
domain2.com
domain3.com
And move them to a webhosting package:
domain1.domain.com
domain2.domain.com
domain3.domain.com
And then setup these as an addon domain, so it will a domain again instead of a subdomain.

I have a project coming up to host a self developed database app on a web based SQL server. We have received the prepayment for the server rent for 24 months already and are currently looking for the best possible provider.
Requirements:
Uptime and service response is critical for us. We want an unmanaged server but require the best possible response time in case of hardware defects or network issues (DDoS).
In the beginning the user base (small) will mainly be in Europe but with the tendency to grow more continents. Id like a US east cost location with a speedy connect to EU but would consider an EU provider with a good rep.
Server specs:
I7 processor for fast RAM access
12GB DDR3 RAM (probably more later)
2 x SSD 80GB in Raid 1 (planning to go RAID10 on 4 disks later)
Hardware Raid controller
2 TB traffic /month
Windows Server Std 2003 x64
SQL Server 2008
Unmanaged. No help needed with server config.
We intend to keep the same hardware for 24 months. So rent to own might be an option Large upfront payment are ok to reduce monthly costs.
Hardware SLA would be nice
KVMoIP would be nice
Firewall:
Dedicated unit would be nice but we have no experience here and would need full support.

I've a site running at my localhost with Apache/Tomcat server, pages are mostly jsp.
I've used Oracle as the database but i'm currently migrating it to MySQL. I've used the
Struts framework. And i'm planning to add AJAX to it in coming days.
So, the whole thing is up and working on my local machine, how do i host it on a server so that its available in the internet?
Which hosting service is required for this kind of website?
How do i choose a hosting service?
And the most important of all, how to deploy and make the code running in the remote server.
I'm planning to go for a shared server for the moment.

I was thinking about getting a core2duo for a vps node and I was thinking that I need quite alot of IP addresses and was hoping that the delivery time on the IP addresses were quite small. I need it for hypervm due to the fact that its alot cheaper than Virtuozzo.

I have been running a dedicated server for years, first with Carolina Online, who then sold it to HostOnce.
Today at around 6PM my server, that was working fine and I was actively working on all day, suddenly disappears off the Internet.
I go to Host Once's ticket system, and they have a message up that they moved their servers from NC to NJ, that all the servers were upgraded to Windows 2003, and that they would be very busy with the migration, don't submit multiple tickets. (Host Once seems to mostly have reseller hosting accounts, not many dedicated servers.)
I start pinging IP addresses and everything in my server's IP block is gone (the furthest a tracert goes is 64.70.48.3 - everything under that is gone.)
This is bad.
I'm worried that they may have bought new boxes in NJ for their reseller accounts, transferred up the data, and abandoned the old boxes in NC ... is this something they might do?
Also worried that the block of IPs their old servers were on may have somehow been reassigned... can this happen?
In any case, waiting to hear back on my ticket but looking for advice. Does anyone know the datacenter Carolina Online / Host Once used in Lumberton, NC? Want to start tracking it down if my box may have been left behind.... Any other insight on what in the world they might be doing / what happenned here?

I want to know that my main site smsbucket.com and smsbucket.com/forums are both hosted on same server.
But in future when my forum will grow I will need to switch host because my current hosting provider doesn't provide big disk space so in future can I just host /forums on different server? and keep smsbucket.com on my current server?

I have configured and install VMWare Server on my server and currently trying to install Plesk. I have gotten the network working so I can download.
I want to give the VMWare Virtual Machine it's own IP so I can connect via PuTTY instead of the console, which e.g. does not let me paste url's (plesk download url is long).
I am planning to host a few websites on the Plesk Virtual Machine. I have added the IP my network provider given me using 'setup' in CentOS and it's listed in /sbin/ifconfig, but does not work yet.
Do I first need to add the ip to the host server self? Or can a VPS directly use an ip?
(PS: Do I use too many hard breaks in my texts?)

Our dedicated server runs our virtual machines for us and the NAT option is terrible...the virtual machines work REALLY well when they use a Bridged connection. The problem is that our virtual machines have to acquire an IP address somehow, and the hosting provider we currently use says they only give one IP address to our server which is fine if the NAT within the software worked really well...is there a webhost that can provide a setup where they have a router hooked to our dedicated server so if we need more local IP's they can be given/assigned by the router. This would then allow us to run our virtual machines much better. Does anybody know of a dedicated server host that will do this?

I want a reliable network. I would prefer having a dedicated 10mbit rather then 100mbps shared.
Server requirements:
Reliable fast network.
2Gigs of Ram
WHM
I will be hosting online games on the server so the latency is very important. Server can be either in UK or USA.
Budget: 140USD per month. Not interested in servers with setup fees.

what hosts are considered the best for virtual dedicated servers.
I know about the big names like GoDaddy and Yahoo, but who really has the best service and (importantly) the best price/value?
Heres what I need power-wise: Something that offers 2GB+ of RAM to me, 20GB+ Hard Drive space, and something thats running on Windows. I intend to run 3 e-commerce sites off this, so if you think I need more power please recommend it.

my server will revert to its old host name and stop working. Old host name was (in) and the new one is (zonto). Then, the server will eventually crash HTTPD. There is enough ram, there is small cpu usage. HTTPD is restarted and then it says it can't connect to local host blah blah. I checked EVERYWHERE, the new host name is set. Is there a host name issue some where else? I change it via the hostname command and changed all of the files.

I have been with Page-Zone for a couple years now. Just the past year I have had little problems with them.
-For instance once I was trying to update my website and their server went down. I thought it was something on my end so I started trouble shooting it for an hour and then it came back up.
-Another time the users on my website were without e-mail for a week, because they changed IP address.
-And finally the e-mail accounts couldn't receive any e-mails from Comcast, MSN, or Hotmail accounts. So I ended up setting up a Google Aps account for us to use for e-mail.
Granted they are very cheap but I have been having many problems with little support. Also today I just noticed that in the whois it lists Network Solutions as the technical contact. Are these things that I should be looking for a new host for?

Somebody posted a video in my website which got viral. Many big websites (like gizmodo) embeded it and I've maxed out my 100mbit/s connection. Traffic is increasing and my website started crashing.
I want to move that video to other server ASAP so my website would stop crashing.
Do you know any host which would set up server or VPS fast (up to 1-2 hours)?

we had 2 Xen serverers in colohouse, each with 30 IPs yet.
Now we are going to purchase third server and started to think about renting small rack and putting own firewall infront of the servers.
Actual bandwidth is 5Mbits for both servers together.
We are thinking about to have something like this:
Colohouse-->Firewall<-->switch<--->Xen server(s)
With scenario we would like to add:
1) traffic monitoring per IP
2) traffic shapping per IP
3) firewalling whole segment of our public IPs
FW will get single IP and range of public IPs routed to that IP
4) be able to put one public IP for VPS on to any Xen server
What firewall and switch you will recommend for this scenario?

I always have customers complaining not receiving emails from my online store.
While checking with dnsreport, I found the following:
Quote:
WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server. Note that this one test may use a cached DNS record.
mail.shashinki.com claims to be non-existent host mail.shashinki.com:
220-mail.shashinki.com ESMTP Exim 4.66 #1 Thu, 12 Jul 2007 10:51:20 +0800 220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited, 220 and/or bulk e-mail.
I have my own dedicated server.
How can I correct the above so that ISP will not treat mails sending from my servers as spam and deleted them without sending to my customers?

Our business website [URL] .... needs to switch hosts and I am researching exactly what I will need to keep in mind for doing so.
Current host: hostonfiber.com (managed)
Migrating to: GoDaddy (managed, Dedicated linux based server)
OS: Linux CentOS 64-BitCPU: IntelĀ® Coreā¢ i5 - 4 coresRAM: 8 GBStorage: 2 x 1 TB hard drivesBandwidth: 10 TB per month
I have never switched servers before and would like to make certain there are no issues or downtime with the migration process.
Before I get started I am looking to compile a comprehensive checklist or order of operations so to speak, things I will need to keep in mind, technical info I will need to gather and processes I will need to fulfill in order to make certain the website functions as it should for all applications.
