Vectorlevel Or Doreo Or TotalChoice Or Medialayer Or

Dec 24, 2008

I has one blog which hosted on Bluehost for 2 years now. My blog is base on drupal, the content is less than 100M, and has 1K unique visitors per month, use around 300M data transfer per month. My problem with bluehost is quite "normal": site went down without reason, sql database disappeared sometimes, site banned for exceed cpu usage limit, ...... So it's time to move on.

I would like to build one more site in the new year along with my blog. Since the new site will be mostly hosting flash games, I expect far more bandwidth requirement than my personal blog. And my budget is under $10 per month.

So far I narrow down my choices to following six:

1. Nearlyfreespeech.net
100M Storage $1 per month, 1G Transfer $1 per month

2. Vectorlevel.com
1G Storage, 10G Transfer / $5 per month, Extra Data Transfer: $1/GB per month

3. TotalChoice.com
2.4G Storage, 80G Transfer / $5 per month, Extra Data Transfer: $2.5/GB per month

4. doreo.com/
2G Storage, 60G Transfer / $6.99 per month

5. Medialayer
500M Storage, 10G Transfer / $9.95 per month

6. Servage.net
510G Storage, 5010G Transfer / $6.45 per month

Medialayer seems has pretty high reputation here in WHT, but it's a little expensive to me for only 10G data transfer.

Vectorlevel is young and very Medialayer alike. 10G/$5 month data transfer seems right for me. But as it's a new company without proved track record, I'm not sure whether they will still be good in years. ( But I really like their "Do what you want" attitude.)

TotalChoice.com and doreo.com both offer more than 50G Transfer per month which is good if my site become popular in the future. And both two seems don't have complains here which is also a good sign. But last time I checked, one site hosted on doreo is hosting with other 308 sites on one server, and a totalchoice one is with 203 other domains.

Though both are acceptable ( comparing to my site on Bluehost server with other 908 domains, or STEADFAST.NET one with 2048 other sites), but still seems a little too much. And doreo's $6.99 plan only allow 1 MySQL db which is also limited to me.

Nearlyfreespeech.net is a cost-efficient option for my current requirement, but will not scale well if site become popular in a long term.

Servage, yes, there're tons of complains about how servage sucks, but since two sites:

freebreakgames.com and Mooktown.com are both hosted on Servage, one hosted with 46 other sites one with 19 other sites, and both two sites are stable, so I add this one as backup option.

Anyone Hosted At Hawk Host

Jul 29, 2008

after reading a lot im decided to leave my actual hosting company and im almost convinced about getting an account at hawk host. But i have other hosting companies in mind owning data centers in Europe. As im in Spain i need to know that being hosted so far wont ruin web browsing for spanish visitors, so i would appreciate anyone hosted at hawk host to drop address for their webs, better if are some different from different people so i can discard a single web being slow just because it is built that way.

Hawk Host = Awesome

Oct 18, 2008

Below is my experience with Bluehost and Hawkhost. I am a long time lurker on WHT so this is my first post. After signing up with Hawk Host i thought this would be a perfect first post

and also give some props to Hawk Host and their awesome customer service. I also plan to write a 6 and 1 year review in the future.....................

I originally started an investing blog with the idea to keep track of my stock market purchases. Along the way, my stock investing blog has grown a bit and I have made about $100/month on pure Adsense. Now, when I originally started I had no idea of how this web hosting stuff works. All I wanted was a simple blog. I heard about Wordpress.com but not the self hosted Wordpress. I soon found out about the self hosted wordpress and could not wait to get up and running. I have no idea how I stumbled on Bluehost but I signed up immediately for their plan. Bluehost.com has only 1 plan running at 6.95 for 24 months or $166.80.

So after about 3 months of hosting with Bluehost, they start having some serious issues.

My site at one point was down for 3 days straight. Big deal? every host must have this. But, the dilemma continues for about a month. At this point I am ticked and soon found out they were moving servers, etc. typical BS

Normal hosting continues until I realized the original domain I had signed up with is no longer active as I started using another domain for SEO purposes. So I logg in to their love chat and get treated really bad. All I wanted to do was switch my main domain so all other sites will be added on my new main one. What do I get?

* "Back up your sites by yourself its easy" ( yeah Dufus if you spend your whole day doing this stuff)

* "We do not have time for small jobs"

* "We have better things to do"

The last one was the last straw. I could have easily responded back but there was no point arguing. I knew when my account expired my options would be wide open as I had some sort of idea from hanging out in the Digital Point forums on what to look for in a host.

So I still had about 6 months and I start doing some homework. I constantly check Web hosting Talk and bookmark hosting companies. The first thing I did was look at the sites design. This helped narrow down the good from the bad. Basic idea is...if a web company is not willing to invest in how their site looks, chances are ...it sucks.
Anyway, with about 1 month to go, I continue to add companies to my bookmark list.

Eventually, I get down to about 10. From these 10, I Google their name , look for reviews, checkout web forums,etc.. I'm basically looking for a reason not to sign up with someone. Even with Hawk host I did a little test to see how good support is. I wrote an e-mail, did some chores, came back and I had an e-mail from their support.

I was sold.

Now in that test e-mail, I asked if they were willing to transfer my websites. Response: As long as my previous host had cPanel this should be no problem. So once I signed up I contacted support if they would please start the transfer process A.S.A.P. 15 minutes later I get an e-mail that they have initiated the process. WOW! Again, this is on a
Saturday.

Summary:
Bluehost.com Customer Service Blew It
Bluehost.com lost my business ( roughly 10 domains purchased + renewals)
Hawk host customer service A+
Hawk host will get new business from me

Hawk Host - Month Review

Oct 9, 2009

I have used Hawkhost in the past for a forum (pre-Litespeed change over) I was running and was very pleased. My boss needed a host for her site and HH was one of the first that came to mind. After a quick browse here, it seemed like a no brainer.

I'm happy to say that Hawkhost is still a great host for me and in some aspects, even better than before.

The thing that has really impressed me is the server and network speed. Both of the sites I have with them are purely static content and are noticeably faster than any other host I have used. Proof, to me anyway, that Litespeed really does make a difference. Uptime has been great as well - I'm sitting at 100% since August 26th.

Support is helpful, I have only needed them once for help with a weird directory issue.

I submitted the ticket as medium priority at 10:30 am, first response was at 11:14 and the issue was resolved at 12:08. Not as fast as some other hosts but still adequate by my standards. I wish they would have told me what the issue was, I have never run in to the problem before in 9 years of paid web hosting, but whatever. It got fixed and I guess that is all that matters.

I am signed up with HH for a year (for something like 22 dollars) so I will continue to update this thread as time goes by.

For verification purposes, the domains hosted with them are here and here.

Hawk Host Signup Review

Sep 20, 2008

we finally did the switch to Hawk Host last night. The account setup went well and I talked to Tony personally about an issue I was having getting the log in for cpanel.

Got the site uploaded and everything fine. I did have an issue with some random php errors but submitted it to support and it was fixed before the end of the night.

Overall very impressed so far and the site seems to have a quicker load time that it ever has. Also can't beat getting 45% off thanks to the code in the hosting deals forum. I have a mailing list up and running and am looking at other scripts that might be useful at the moment.

My Positive Experience With Hawk Host

Jul 27, 2008

I used Web Hosting Talk to help me choose a shared web server and the choice I made was Hawk Host.

I just want to say I have had nothing but positive experiences with Hawk Host in the two months I have had it. No down times, no slow downs. Nothing.

Today (a Sunday afternoon) I had a problem with a Moodle course I am running on Hawk Host. This turns out to be a problem not with anything at Hawk Host, but with Moodle itself. I didn't know that at the time, though, so I turned in a trouble ticket at Hawk Host.

Within an hour -- remember, it's a *Sunday afternoon*, Tony had not only gotten back to me via e-mail, he had implemented a solution that is going to solve the biggest aspects of the problem until I can get things resolved with Moodle itself.

I had to come back here to share my experience. I don't post a lot of forum messages at any of the forums I visit, but I read a lot. This time, however, I simply had to write about this. I do not think it is possible to provide better customer service than I have received at Hawk Host.

Don't Use Namecheap Webhosting

Mar 17, 2008

I've just received my second suspension from them, for having 5 visitors on my website, which was abuse of their resources.

I had issues with them last month, they claimed I was using too much resources and had to upgrade to Business class. I've paid for two years there as it is.

Every time I would get these notices, I'd work with them and it was found that one comment bot was hitting my site repeatedly (one post several times in a row which really shouldn't cause any problems anyway) and would cause things to raise. In their email, their support said:

Quote:

Your account is unsuspended now. Please check and prevent future overloads.
Also we can block ip addresses of your referrals, when all connections is from one ip instead of suspending your account. Should we block 92.48.193.58 and similar?

When I said yes, I was sent this reply:

Quote:

Hello,

IP 92.48.193.58 blocked in our firewall. We'll act similar way, when your account will be leeched from one IP. Now this ticket is being closed.

So tonight, I redo a post, since their hotlink protection isn't stopping hits on the photo being linked to, which involved uploading an image and deleting the old, and shortly thereafter I get this:

Quote:

All of them supposedly me. But at any rate, only 5 users at namecheap can apparently bring about a suspension. I have never in my life had such treatment by a host. Most of the site is a static site, where most people land. And this is for less than 50 people on a daily basis.

They may have a good reputation as a domain reseller (yes, they're now ICANN registrars, but they haven't switched over yet, they're still reselling for Enom) but they had better rethink their webhosting.

People I know who have WordPress pages at places like Dreamhost, Lunarpages, all the rest have way more traffic than I do and yet they don't have these problems. I'm just sick at they way I've been treated there.

Whatever you do, don't host with namecheap. I'm truly sorry I did. And if anyone wants to verify that I host with them, it's hauntedlights.com, obviously a really exploitable site. It's about haunted lighthouses.

Anyone Using Namecheap Hosting

Nov 19, 2008

I signed up for namecheap hosting for 1 month just to check how good they are. I hosted my banners site over there {snip} and it is opening OK.

I was wondering who else is using their hosting from this forum?

I saw a thread on WebHostingTalk about namecheap hosting and the members who participated there are very satisfied with the hosting but when I asked about it on DP forum the members were just against of it. According to them Namecheap is good only for domains not for hosting.

Would you like to share your experience (if you have used namecheap hosting)?

Namecheap Hosting

Sep 2, 2008

I recently started using NameCheap.com for shared hosting. It's only $3/month.

They have fairly fast download speeds (like if I download a big picture from my own website).

But their "processing" speed seems a little slow? I'm not sure, because this is new to me and I have nothing to compare it with. But if I look at a page that uses WordPress where the server is being asked to look up stuff from the SQL databases and form the html on the run, it seems to not be very responsive sometimes - to load the posts that have a certain category associated with it, it sometimes takes 3 seconds to load after clicking, sometimes 7 seconds. Not very scientific I know, and there's other factors, but just to give an idea.

For $3/month, I guess I shouldn't complain. But if I choose to give my readers (my parents and my one friend) a better browsing experience, would I get better response times by paying a bit more?

Anyone have experience with namecheap? I've also considered GoDaddy, but don't like their advertising strategy. Makes me feel like a high schooler.

I should also ask - how's the webmail service on other shared hosting companies? Namecheap's webmail is really really slow. Ok, $3/month isn't much, but the webmail is much slower than my website. Is that "normal"?

They will reply me but I want to know your advices too about Namecheap. Is it good choice to host a VBulletin forum on shared hosting from Namecheap?

I don't want to buy VPS or Dedicated Server because I don't have much knowledge of hosting and I have heard that VPS and Dedicated servers are very difficult to manage for person like me

Latest Review For NameCheap Hosting

Oct 22, 2008

I'm considering switching hosting to NameCheap to save some money over my current hosting plan. I've never had a problem with their registrar service. I did a search for reviews on their hosting service. There were some negative ones a few years back when they were selling PeopleHost hosting, but they apparently have their own hosting now.

I found a few posts with issues, but there always has to be a few. However, if 3 of 10 customers have problems, it's a lot different than if 3 of 10,000 customers have problems. Anyone have an idea of how many sites they host?

Also, what's the latest word from people using their hosting services? Any good? How about response time and up time?
