Hawk Host = Awesome

Oct 18, 2008

Below is my experience with Bluehost and Hawkhost. I am a long time lurker on WHT so this is my first post. After signing up with Hawk Host i thought this would be a perfect first post

and also give some props to Hawk Host and their awesome customer service. I also plan to write a 6 and 1 year review in the future.....................

I originally started an investing blog with the idea to keep track of my stock market purchases. Along the way, my stock investing blog has grown a bit and I have made about $100/month on pure Adsense. Now, when I originally started I had no idea of how this web hosting stuff works. All I wanted was a simple blog. I heard about Wordpress.com but not the self hosted Wordpress. I soon found out about the self hosted wordpress and could not wait to get up and running. I have no idea how I stumbled on Bluehost but I signed up immediately for their plan. Bluehost.com has only 1 plan running at 6.95 for 24 months or $166.80.

So after about 3 months of hosting with Bluehost, they start having some serious issues.

My site at one point was down for 3 days straight. Big deal? every host must have this. But, the dilemma continues for about a month. At this point I am ticked and soon found out they were moving servers, etc. typical BS

Normal hosting continues until I realized the original domain I had signed up with is no longer active as I started using another domain for SEO purposes. So I logg in to their love chat and get treated really bad. All I wanted to do was switch my main domain so all other sites will be added on my new main one. What do I get?

* "Back up your sites by yourself its easy" ( yeah Dufus if you spend your whole day doing this stuff)

* "We do not have time for small jobs"

* "We have better things to do"

The last one was the last straw. I could have easily responded back but there was no point arguing. I knew when my account expired my options would be wide open as I had some sort of idea from hanging out in the Digital Point forums on what to look for in a host.

So I still had about 6 months and I start doing some homework. I constantly check Web hosting Talk and bookmark hosting companies. The first thing I did was look at the sites design. This helped narrow down the good from the bad. Basic idea is...if a web company is not willing to invest in how their site looks, chances are ...it sucks.
Anyway, with about 1 month to go, I continue to add companies to my bookmark list.

Eventually, I get down to about 10. From these 10, I Google their name , look for reviews, checkout web forums,etc.. I'm basically looking for a reason not to sign up with someone. Even with Hawk host I did a little test to see how good support is. I wrote an e-mail, did some chores, came back and I had an e-mail from their support.

I was sold.

Now in that test e-mail, I asked if they were willing to transfer my websites. Response: As long as my previous host had cPanel this should be no problem. So once I signed up I contacted support if they would please start the transfer process A.S.A.P. 15 minutes later I get an e-mail that they have initiated the process. WOW! Again, this is on a
Saturday.

Summary:
Bluehost.com Customer Service Blew It
Bluehost.com lost my business ( roughly 10 domains purchased + renewals)
Hawk host customer service A+
Hawk host will get new business from me

Anyone Hosted At Hawk Host

Jul 29, 2008

after reading a lot im decided to leave my actual hosting company and im almost convinced about getting an account at hawk host. But i have other hosting companies in mind owning data centers in Europe. As im in Spain i need to know that being hosted so far wont ruin web browsing for spanish visitors, so i would appreciate anyone hosted at hawk host to drop address for their webs, better if are some different from different people so i can discard a single web being slow just because it is built that way.

PremiumReseller Review - Awesome Host!

Aug 11, 2008

I would just like to say that PremiumReseller has outstanding uptime, service, and support. I have been with them for several months, and have had no issues. They respond to my support inquiries in an extremely timely manner, and they also have 24/7 live online support which comes in handy.

If you have any questions about my experience, please let me know and I will do my best to answer them. Their pricing is perfect, it is not too low as to compromise service, and not so high I wouldn't consider them.

Hawk Host - Month Review

Oct 9, 2009

I have used Hawkhost in the past for a forum (pre-Litespeed change over) I was running and was very pleased. My boss needed a host for her site and HH was one of the first that came to mind. After a quick browse here, it seemed like a no brainer.

I'm happy to say that Hawkhost is still a great host for me and in some aspects, even better than before.

The thing that has really impressed me is the server and network speed. Both of the sites I have with them are purely static content and are noticeably faster than any other host I have used. Proof, to me anyway, that Litespeed really does make a difference. Uptime has been great as well - I'm sitting at 100% since August 26th.

Support is helpful, I have only needed them once for help with a weird directory issue.

I submitted the ticket as medium priority at 10:30 am, first response was at 11:14 and the issue was resolved at 12:08. Not as fast as some other hosts but still adequate by my standards. I wish they would have told me what the issue was, I have never run in to the problem before in 9 years of paid web hosting, but whatever. It got fixed and I guess that is all that matters.

I am signed up with HH for a year (for something like 22 dollars) so I will continue to update this thread as time goes by.

For verification purposes, the domains hosted with them are here and here.

Hawk Host Signup Review

Sep 20, 2008

we finally did the switch to Hawk Host last night. The account setup went well and I talked to Tony personally about an issue I was having getting the log in for cpanel.

Got the site uploaded and everything fine. I did have an issue with some random php errors but submitted it to support and it was fixed before the end of the night.

Overall very impressed so far and the site seems to have a quicker load time that it ever has. Also can't beat getting 45% off thanks to the code in the hosting deals forum. I have a mailing list up and running and am looking at other scripts that might be useful at the moment.

My Positive Experience With Hawk Host

Jul 27, 2008

I used Web Hosting Talk to help me choose a shared web server and the choice I made was Hawk Host.

I just want to say I have had nothing but positive experiences with Hawk Host in the two months I have had it. No down times, no slow downs. Nothing.

Today (a Sunday afternoon) I had a problem with a Moodle course I am running on Hawk Host. This turns out to be a problem not with anything at Hawk Host, but with Moodle itself. I didn't know that at the time, though, so I turned in a trouble ticket at Hawk Host.

Within an hour -- remember, it's a *Sunday afternoon*, Tony had not only gotten back to me via e-mail, he had implemented a solution that is going to solve the biggest aspects of the problem until I can get things resolved with Moodle itself.

I had to come back here to share my experience. I don't post a lot of forum messages at any of the forums I visit, but I read a lot. This time, however, I simply had to write about this. I do not think it is possible to provide better customer service than I have received at Hawk Host.

OMG! AllureHost Is AWESOME

Jul 16, 2008

I searched and searched for months to find another web host. I don't remember how I found AllureHost, but I'm so glad I did. I was eager to leave my former web host simply because their customer service was horrible. Man ALLUREHOST HAS UNBELIEVABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. John and Salvador are AWESOME! I'm new at this web thing so my last "point and click" web host was easy for me, but their service was ridiculous. With AllureHost, when I submit a question that I think is stupid, I get immediate response without being talked down to or made to feel like an idiot. The response time with AllureHost is AMAZING. I've already been spreading the word that when it comes to a web host that actually sincerely has concern about their customers no matter how big or small, AllureHost is the one.

UBHosting Awesome VPS Provider!

Aug 7, 2008

I've had a server up and on-line with them for over 7 days.

The network is rock solid, no lost packets, consistent speed.

I can't believe the value and deal I got with them.

I haven't used the server for anything yet but it is perfect and hard to beat.

I've easily been able to get 11 MB/sec from a lot of places in the US even though the datacenter is in Ontario.

I couldn't be happier and I'm glad I haven't gone with a large company that doesn't care about their customers (which is how mosts hosts are or become these days).

Volumedrive: Awesome Company

May 16, 2008

i'd post an update review on volumedrive. I'm a long standing client with them, varying between 3-5 servers with them at any given time.

Support. On the whole josh and jeff are the friendliest nicest people I know. They are willing to help out with any minor server issues, resolve rebuilds matters rapidly, and know where to point you to in the event of problems.

Network. Probably on the weaker side of their services. using burst.net i've had at least a couple of network complications every month i've been with them. some have been no-notice router updates / upgrades, some have been hijacked IP addresses from other servers in the network (should be resolved in new data center). But on the whole, good network performance, responsive and fast. And you can't complain with 10+mbit unmetered...

Current issues. Here's where the "don't jump on the boat" bit comes in. VD has been incredibly busy as of late shifting to the new datacenter. as a result their customer service and *actual* performance is suffering seriously. What I mean by this is that while they are super friendly, promise to get things done, give very confident and positive estimates as to when they can get a server up or fix some issue, they just don't get anything done.

In the last month I've faced some serious issues regarding this. The most in-your-face one has been an additional harddrive I had requested to be put in 15 days ago today and paid for it. They said they had them in stock. A few days later, still no drive - got an immediate response to my query that they had used up the drives in new builds and they had specifically ordered me one which would arrive on monday, so i'd have it monday evening.

monday evening came and went, tuesday came and went. responses each time are "We will add this for you tonight, I will make sure of it." (actual quote from e-mail sent yesterday, needless to say I don't have the drive yet) or along that tune. About 20 mins prior to this email I sent them an update request, I'll keep you up to date of this saga

Sadly, this has been the case practically everyday for over 2 weeks now.

That's just one example. A celeron which they had in stock which they said would take 2 days to set up took 6 days. A high power xeon that I made a contract with them to have it set up by Monday (this past one, 5 days ago) was happily taken on by them saying it would not be an issue. I said I'd pay on delivery as it was a time sensitive server and if I didn't have it by the promised delivery date (which they said they could definitely meet) I wouldn't be purchasing it. By tuesday I had no word, and obviously didn't end up getting the server and had to go with another company.

Bottom line. Guys please don't misunderstand - volumedrive is an AMAZING company and I've been with them long enough to still trust these fellows, even after being jerked around a bit this past month. The only reason I haven't jumped ship is cause I know these guys will get back on the horse. I'm just hoping it's sometime soon before their business starts suffering - I've been in the web hosting market long enough to know which direction companies take when they start falling through with promises and have demand outgrow what they can supply, and refuse to deal with customer service expansion.

So yeah, basically, keep an eye on these boards. I'm sure when VD is back on the horse it'll be known, but until then I'd be a little weary and realize these guys are under immense pressure and probably won't be able to fulfil your requests in a timely fashion regardless of how many promises they make or emails they send about it being set up by "tonight."

TMS (Tailor Made Servers) Simply Awesome

Jul 9, 2008

I moved to them last week, because LT's price increase which I was not happy about. I contacted Jose and ordered a server.

Apart from the fact I got some free upgrades (CPU and HDD), the server was setup in about 1 hour! So far, their network is great and the signup process was really easy (no need to go through 2 pages of forms when signing up, unlike LT).

I also like the fact that we are provided a reboot port, and rDNS control (which LT didn't have).

I asked for custom partition aswell and the server was delivered the way I asked.

Overall, I love these guys and I think I'll be a long term customer with them.

My Review Of 3 Awesome Vps Providers (Myraid, Netwisp, Provps) - 3 Month

Nov 19, 2007

I will be reviewing the following 3 vps providers:

1.) Myraid Network [url]
2.) Netwisp [url]
3.) ProVPS [url]

I am using these VPS, as a distributed DNS network. Netwisp's and Myraid Networks vps are also used to filter exim dictionary attacks off server.

1.) Myraid Network - 10/10
Myraid network is an awesome company to deal with. The vps was setup extremely fast and, I had no issues from the get go. To this date, I have not received any downtime. The staff is very friendly and willing to help with any issue. I just wish I had an issue to send to them Everything has been flawless. This is a virtuozzo VPS. I fully recommend this host.

2.) Netwisp - 10/10
This is another great host. Hal definately knows what hes doing with virtuozzo, everything has been running flawless. I have received no downtime, other then a scheduled maintenance that I was fully notified about in advance. This is the second time having a vps with this company, and I am glad to say both times have been excellent. I fully recommend this host.

3.) ProVPS - 10/10
This is a xen host this time. Very well ran company. They have their own XEN panel that is absolutely the best one on the market. You definately get more control over your vps specifics then other hosts in my opinion... Did I mention to you... its flawless? No downtime here either. The vps is also very speedy considering its their cheap plan. I fully recommend this host.

There you have it folks... Take it from a seasoned hosting veteran...Stop dealing with poorly ran companies, choose one of these to be your next host. Your headaches will go away.

How To Keep Email On Current Host And Forward Http Traffic To New Host

They do not want to configure an MX entry on DTH to autoforward email back to their current provider because they don't want their email to pass through DTH.

In order to do this, do I keep the nameserver entries on the current provider the same, and configure an http redirect to point to DTH? Or is there something else I should configure on the current provider?

Blue Host And Host Monster Is Operated By The Same People

Then I moved to Host Monster and received the same kind of service/support. I later then figured out that Blue Host and Host Monster is runned by the same people. For example, I opened up a tech support ticket with Host Monster and then they replied signing their signature with Blue Host. So I got the same service: terrible tech support and servers kept going down. Now I'm looking for a new web hosting. I a few people here gave Host Gator some good reviews. I hope Host Gator is not run be the same people that runs Blue Host and Host Monster.

First Paid Host - Which Host To Chose

Dec 12, 2007

I have just made a personal website using photoshop, html, css and php. My site contains an index page, a gallery page with 8 photos, a contact page with a form and an extra page with some quotes. I am planning to use a paid host for the first time. Based on feedbacks from some of my sitepoint friends, I decided to go in for shared hosting. I thought of using Hostdogs.com as they have the option of a monthly billing cycle. I thought that I have the option of changing my host after a month if I am not happy with them. I have also read a lot about Hostgator.com. A lot of sitepoint members seem hooked to it.

1. Can anyone give an opinion as to which host I should go in for? Hostdogs also give a free domain. Is there any reason I should go in for Hostgator instead of Hostdogs?

2. One more question, I have heard that once I have a site running, I can earn money through the advertisements placed on it? How do I place advertisements on my site?

3. One last and very important question is whether it is right to go in for shared hosting at this point of time. I just read this

Quote:

When you look for a suitable host, be sure to check out the amount of bandwidth that will be available to your site. Even a site that doesn't require a great deal of data transfer per month could run slowly if you're hosted on a shared server; particularly if you are on the same server as a more popular or bandwidth-intensive site.
The more sites hosted on a server, the more likely they are to compete with each other for available resources, including bandwidth. This is why you may notice a reduction in server response times during busy periods, or during a sudden peak in traffic at a busier site on a server that you share.

This made me wonder whether I should go in for shared hosting. But then mine is a personal home page which may not have so much of traffic.

4. What does the paragraph below mean? How does one handle ones registration manually?

Self-Management (no cost)
Select this option if you prefer to handle your registration manually.Your web host can establish service with any Top-Level Domain (TLD), international or domestic.

Windows Host Or Specialsit ASP Host

Dec 31, 2007

I will be setting up a site which uses ASP.NET 1.1. I know versions 3.0/3.5 are available, but they are not yet V2.0 compliant. Anyway thst is not the issue - just context.

Would like your advice as to whether it would be better to host this site with a company who looks as though they are specialising in ASP; such as DiscountASP, or Softsyhosting, or go with a general Windows hoster such as Steadfast, Fluidhosting, or 3Essentials?

I know nothing about ASP, so I don't know whether it is not at all neccessary to have a host specifically knowledgable about it, as I am unlikely to ever have problems with it, OR; I will most certainly have to address ASP issues sometime, so it would be essential to have support who really knows ASP.

What Do You Look For In A Web Host

Feb 10, 2009

I just want to ask the community of WHT a series of questions about shared and reseller hosting and what you would like out of a shared/reseller host.

What do you look for in a web host (in terms of shared and reseller hosting).

Do you prefer cheap "unlimited" and "unmetered" plans?

Would you like support through live chat, phone, or helpdesk?

What kind of price range would you consider reasonable for a shared hosting plan? a reseller plan?

Would a community forum with support staff and other clients be a plus to you?

Does the site's design and the software it utilizes be a concern to you?

In your opinion, what would make you choose a specific web hosting company over any other?
