In another thread somebody had mentioned something about Citrix Xenserver utilizing shared iSCSI storage with multiple hardware nodes. I think this is a very intriguing concept, but is there anything open source or less expensive that you have used to accomplish similar resource virtualization?

Whether citrix or not, describe your setup!

Which Virtualization For Desktop
This is a little bit Offtopic here but maybe it's okay to ask my question.

For my GUI software development i need a virtual server solution. It must run WinXP, WinVista, LinuxI386, LinuxAMD64, FreeBSDI386, FreeBSDAMD64 and Solaris.

I'm currently running VMWare with all this systems. But their KVM tools are very instable - especially when waking up from hibernate etc. They eat the key/mouse focus and the only way to get any reaction is often a hard shutdown.

How good are the other Virtualization Kits? I heared that FreeBSD does not work on VirtualBox? I'm especially interested in Xen but i'm not sure if this is good for Desktop use. Seems that it is promoted almost exclusively as a server solution.

Apache X Virtualization
We usually find some constrains using Apache/cpanel (1.3.41). Basically, we serve simple php codes and few images.

We usually setup our server to use lighttpd for static content and apache for dynamic content. Ok, due to some complex requirements on mod_rewrite we use that setup.

But frequently we see our apache reaches it limit and slow down with 0 idle servers. Specially as we have about 270 requests/per second on apache. Our load is low, barely passes 1,2 of load for small periods, our memory ok, our I/O is fine.

But we almost always reaches the 0 idle servers. Until now, our best config was:

Timeout between 60-120
KeepAlive Off
MaxKeepAliveRequests 1000
KeepAliveTimeout 15
MinSpareServers 50
MaxSpareServers 200
StartServers 50
MaxClients 256
MaxRequestsPerChild 80

As we clearly see that our server is under usage, I was wondering if it's a limitation on Apache or if I put virtualization on my server and run two apache webservers as cluster I would get better results.

So what do you think about guys? It's a matter of optimization (what could I do better for this httpd.conf setup?) ? Or cluster with virtualization would deliver what I'm looking for.

To Do Virtualization Inside VPS
I have this nice vps, but its on linux, and I always wanted to run windows apps on the vps, because of the nice configuration. I already tried wine, but most of my windows apps don't work, cuz they require .net framework to run.

I tried to instal vmware server and virtualbox, but both of them complain about a kernel problem, they are unable to locate my kernel source, so they can't run.

I am linux newbie, and i am running on a centos 5 operating system.

Some people say its impossible to run virtualization 'inside' virtualization, but i already read some people that say its possible.

Microsoft Licensing For Virtualization
Microsoft said this about Microsoft Licensing for Virtualization

Run any number of software instances in physical and virtual operating system environments on a server.

Now,I have some questions:

1)Is this method of licensing just for hyper-v or we can use it on vmware ESXi or Xen?

2)How we can use Microsoft Volume Licensing on Vmware ESXi and Xen?

3)What is the best solution for windows virtualization?(vmware esxi or hyper-v or xen)

4)what is difference between xen and xenserver?

5)which control panels we can use for hyper-v,vmware ESXi and xenserver?

Virtual Iron Virtualization
Basically I need to virtualize a single new dell server. One virtual server needs to run windows 2003 server standard and Microsoft SQL 2005. The other virtual server will run CentOS Linux with a perl and PostgreSQL application.

The dell server is going to have two quad core xeon processors (8 cores total), 8gigs of ram, and two 15,000rpm SAS drives.

I came across Virutal Iron which is free for the single server instance and seems like it will do the job well. Has anybody used it? What is performance like? Seems to run a Java backend so wondering about the performance there.

Any other recommendations? I looked at VMware but the cost is so high, and probably more then I need, since I only need to virtualize a single server.

Virtualization WIN 2008

This machine will be used to run Mysql (32bits or 64bits) and MDaemon (32bits only).

I have 2 options to choose and I'm not pretty sure which is better.

a) Win 2008 32bits Enterprize using PAE for ram support and running Mdaemon 32 and Mysql 32.

b) Win 2008 64bits standard having virtualized a win 2008 64 bits for Mysql 64 and a win 2008 32 bits for MDaemon 32.

Virtualization Solution? VMware, Virtuozzo, Xen..?
I'm running a dedicated server and the main site on the server relies on Windows OS. The site is not fully utilizing the potential of the dedicated server, so I'd like to put some of my other sites on the same server and eliminate the other (shared) hosting I've been using.

Here's the catch... For the other sites, I'd like to run WHM/Cpanel which requires Linux.

If I understand correctly, this leaves me with having to decide on a virtualization solution, which I know nothing about. Some options I have been given are VMware, Virtuozzo, and Xen.

Would you suggest one of these or a different solution entirely?

Virtualization --48Gb @ 1333Mhz Or 72GB @ 800Mhz
So when buying nehalem servers, if you populate 6 rdimms, you can run at 1333Mhz, if you populate 18 rdimms, 800 Mhz (12 rdimms, 1066mhz)

So what do you do for virtualization? the reality is most of the time 48gb is going to be enough for virtualization (that would run 12 4GB servers or 32 2GB servers) and i think at 64gb or more, CPU starts to become a limting factor, but the price of 48GB @ 1333 is slightly more than 72GB @ 800. So what are you guys doing out there? do you go for the performance or do you go with the overkill of memory (that might sometimes come in handy but you probably wont use it all -- more likely just give your VMs more memory for the fun it)? The problem is the 1333 Mhz vs 800 Mhz performance.

Our current environment is a bunch of 16GB servers (50xx chip) and the limitation on us virtualizating more per host is the memory. So I know 48GB is going to be very much welcomed and I think we could use more.. 64gb would be ideal, but we will be happy with 48@1333, but 72GB sounds interesting too, there might be some scenarios where we could use that 72GB although i think performance will shift from memory limitation now to CPU

Do you think if we buy 800Mhz 72gb we will ever look back and think "wish we bought the 48gb 1333 rdimms and not these 800mhz ones"?

Does vmware have some protection tools for this kind o attacks or does this kind of virutalization only work in a an lan that is protected from Internet?

Will 2 dedicated nic solve this?

I Have Lots Of Bandwidth, But My Host Is Slow - Should I Pay For Virtualization
I use a host that gives me way more bandwidth and space than I need, but it is still super slow. It's Dreamhost who is known for charging very low fees and promising the world. Although my sites do load and I get unlimited everything pretty much, I can't stand the slow loads.

They have offered me virtualization of my server so I can create my own virtual server with 150Mhz and 150MB of dedicated CPU/memory for $15 more a month... do you think that will speed me up a lot or should I just suck it up and pay for a better host that doesn't pimp themselves out so badly?

Virtualization - Enterprise Installs? VMWare, Xen, Virtual Iron?
A company i am working with is looking to install a VMWare setup comprising of something like this :

6x Dual Proc Quad Core Nodes with 16GB RAM
2x Clustered iSCSN SAN Nodes

I am intending on purchasing the full suite including DRS/HA/VMotion.

Now this is all well and good but the software pricing is absolutely horrendous! So my question to you chaps is :

Is anyone using the latest Virtual Iron or Xen Enterprise in a high end environment?

Obviously VMWare is the market leader, the big boys are using it and its something you can bank on. (literally! HSBC use it ALOT!)

Is it even worth looking at VI/Xen for something like this? The cost would be like a quarter of the total cost of a VMWare license.

Backup Of Sites - Which Application Level
I have my personal and business websites through Cpanel - which has a backup facility in it. I also have a WebHost Manager, which has a backup option in there. Then.. I can log into HyperVM, and there is another backup option there. This is all running on a VPS.

So - should i be running backups on all 3 levels? Which should I be running backups on, and which is the recommended course of action? The sites are not all that active.. a one week data loss would not be catastrophic - though, if any new clients in that period of time they'd have to re-sign up. I'm currently running backups 3 times a week via WebHost Manager... but suddenly had a fear that maybe I need to run the Cpanel and HyperVM backups too?

Blocking IP Addresses At Server Level
I've been carrying some weird hours lately, so I'm able to see activity on my sites that I normally don't see.

Certain IPs are trying to diddle their things into my server and need the boot. It's not consistent (ie not happening every 5, 10 mins)... it's periodically throughout the months. I'll see an IP I blocked 2 months ago just randomly show up at 4:30am and try accessing the same files it was probing during it's last visit. Assuming this is just some sort of bot, can I block it permanently?

I know APF has a collection system that purges an IP list to keep it from bloating, and I had PSM do some hardening so I'm not entirely sure about the workings of APF firewall. So far my IP blocks are blank (which is a good sign!), but I'd like to add some nuisances to it, to keep their crap from appearing in my error logs anymore as "Denied by Server Configuration"

My question is: Can I block people at server level permanently? I do not want their IP being taken out with the purge list that comes by every so often.

Route From Level 3 To Qwest On The West Coast
I am looking at getting some Qwest bandwidth at 200 Paul, San Francisco. Not being too familar with Qwest's network and as part of evaluating that decision I did some testing to see how the routes/latency looked from various points on the Internet and from our other data centers. For pretty much all the testing I did from the major tier 1/2 networks, Qwest has great peering in places you would expect resulting is decent routes and low latency.

The strange thing is that the one exception is routes from Level 3. As an example, traffic from various Northern California points on Level 3's network to a test IP on Qwest's network in Sunnyvale all go via Denver to connect to Qwest and then back to the Bay Area. For LA originating traffic, it goves via Dallas. Same thing for Seattle that is going via Denver.

Hard to imagine these two tier 1 providers don't peer at any location on the west coast at all? Is this typical between these two or is there some temporary outage right now? Or is there some peering spat going on between them?

Seems pretty silly for traffic to go 3,000 miles between points that are only 10 miles apart!

Here is an example of the route to a test IP sunnyvale.speedtest.qwest.net (205.171.214.185):

1 vlan89.csw3.SanJose1.Level3.net (4.68.18.190) 0 msec

Anyone have experiences with using Qwest bandwidth in Northern California they care to share?

Different Level/tiers/class Of Hosting Company
My startup company has tasked me to look for a hosting company to get dedicated servers for their production (Web, DB) and operation (email, AD, etc) servers, 9 servers in total. I'm new to this whole industry and finding this forum really help me point myself in the right direction given so much junk and "partial" review sites out there.

I was able to get great reviews and recommendations off this forum but since I'm new, one area I'm not clear on is the different levels/tiers/class of hosting companies. For example, from what I am reading, Gigenet & Rackspace seem to be on a high end scale while CoreNetworks is on the low end but still excellent. Where would others like LiquidWeb, SteadFast, Softlayer fit in?

Can someone help me break it down into classes like cars such as budget/mid size/luxury or is it even possible? I'm just trying to get a sense of how to compare these companies as I'm getting quotes from them. These are some of the companies I'm looking at:
LiquidWeb
Gigenet
Softlayer
SteadFast
ThePlanet
Colocrosing
Iweb
DedicatedNow
CoreNetworks
Cartika
Servint
SingleHot

They all seem to have good reviews. I know some are truly managed and some just leave everything to you. I'm probably looking for something in between that has decent bandwidth and speeds. Our site won't be a public site so no large traffic requirements but we are spread out from NY to LA. We probably don't need the fastest speeds but somthing reliable. We are also in the health care industry so HIPAA maybe important but I'm still trying to determine that.

CPanel + Exim + User Level Filtering
whether our webhost has their configuration messed up, or if this is not genuinely possible with cpanel + exim + shared hosting.

Our email server is hosted with the web host, and what we want to do is to not allow certain users to be able to receive (And send) outgoing email to non-local domains e.g. they should only be able send and receive within our hosted domain, @mydomain.com .

Now, we've tried doing this using cpanel's user level filters and have setup the following:

Rules:
If Field To does not contain @mydomain.com OR
If Field From does not contain @mydomain.com

Action:

Fail with message.

We've tested these filters using combinations and they seem to be working as far as we can see on cpanel (it has the filter testing feature)

Now this works for people sending emails into our domain e.g. someone from hotmail tries sending emails to a user, and it bounces back.

But people from inside the domain can send emails to other domains even when they give valid results on the cpanel filter tester.

Low Level Format 512/520
I can't find any software.

Trying to get my Maxtor/Seagate hard drive to low level format to either 512 or 520 so it could work in my EMC2/ax150 SAN unit. If you know any software that would do this please guide me into that direction.

How To Ban A ENTIRE Top-level Domain
how to ban an entire top-level domain? For example ban everyone from Russia by coming from the .ru domain? Or everyone from Lithuania by somehow banning everyone coming from .It ip address.

I've had some people from those places try to hack my site and am fed up with it. So I want to ban those two entire countries for the time being using cPanel X's "IP Deny Manager".

By the way I am not a technical person. Just your every day person running a site.

Google's Entry-level Search Appliance
Google's mini search appliance:
[url]

hardware wise, it's just an out-dated supermicro's mini 1U setup (P8SCT in SC512L chassis, prescott 3G, 2G DDR2, 1x WD 250G) which can be easily upgraded to newer, greener configuration such as PDSMI+ or PDSBL-LN2 board with Conroe/Kentsfield CPU, 4G~8G RAM, even raptor 10k drive.

what do you guys think the market out there for this type of appliance? will updated hardware boots the performance by much?

Skill Level Required For Root Server Management
I am hosting about 12 TYPO3 websites in a shared hosting environment, but I need to think about upgrading to a faster (dedicated) server as some of the sites have a higher traffic volume.

I am not a pro and use Linux only as a user. How dificult is it to manage a root server? Is all done via an easy Control Panel or do I need expert knowledge to install software etc?

Or shoud I look for a managed server where all is done for me?

Parking An External 3rd Level Domain In CPanel
How to add an external third level domain to cPanel?

For example, my main domain at cPanel is one.com, so I can easily add subdomains like second.one.com, third.one.com etc.

But what I need is to point first.two.com to my hosting.

I'm a customer, not the server administrator.

A two.com owner has already configured my server's IP in the two.com zone file for that subdomain.

But how to configure that external 3rd level domain in my cPanel?

Mid-level (1GB RAM) VPS With Strong Support
My university runs a website to help students find rentals in the general area. We recently ran into some billing issues with our current VPS host, and we're trying to move to a new VPS.

I have some experience finding cheap VPSs (I use Slicehost for a 256MB RAM VPS), but this one has different requirements. Our current VPS provides us with 1GB of RAM, and we don't want to go below this. Also, the VPS we use gives great tech support to my boss (who only knows the very basics about technology). We'd also strongly prefer a VPS that comes with Cpanel.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other VPSs that meet these requirements?

IIS FTP Brute Force Attack How To Prevent At Network Level
I am getting a few hundred IIS 6.0 FTP login attempts a second on my windows 2003 x64 server.

We have a Sonicwall TZ180, a full IPS and Firewall in front of the server but I cannot determine a way to block these attacks. I simply have port 25 open to all ip addresses, as I do not know a range of valid ips.

Is there any way to prevent these attacks at the firewall/hardware level? I suspect not, because the firewall doesn’t know if a login attempt is valid or not.

I have enabled IPS on the firewall but doesn’t appear to be stopping these attacks. Is there any way to automatically ban ips that hit port 25 X number of times in a second?
