HA Building High Availability Systems?

View 0 Replieswe are currently planning to implement SAN to our enviroment - VPS hosting.
Al VPS should be placed on the SAN - iSCSI connected to be able live motion etc.
Currently we are fighting with idea of Failover/High avalability.
There has been rumors that dual controller SAN from HP/DELL are much more problematic than single controller versions.
We are also thinking about running some opensource like OpenFiler/FreeNAS/OpenSolaris or NexentaStore on supermicro boxes with SATA or single RAID controller.
But in that case - how make the iSCSI target highly available? Mirroring of the data/space is pretty easy with DRBD or ZFS but when one SAN box goes down, there should be no interruption in iSCSI targe service - no IP change etc..
I am having a new mission to achieve and I really need some pro-Windows system to help me with their advices.
I have a server which requires high availability of data and service. Basically the server run a server/client service and all clients makes their operation over this server. The server is a simple Windows 2003 Web Edition server.
My goal is to have one server running (let’s say Tom with IP 192.168.0.1) and one running as stand-by (let’s say Jerry with IP 192.168.0.2) ready to take over if the first server crashes (this would remind pro-Linux some kind of DRBD and Heartbeat server).
So, the the first server run without problem, all transactions are going to be written in the directory “D:/Transactions”. This directory must be saved in real-time to the second server which stands in case of failure...
The first server also run a Windows service, which has to be stopped on the stand-by server and started ONLY if the first server is not working anymore.
I would like also the two servers (Tom and Jerry) to share a virtual IP address on the one which is having the service running, let’s say this IP would be 192.168.0.3.
When the first server goes offline hung or whatever, the second server take over, start the service and does the job of the first - when the first come back online, I re-sync the data from the second to the first and then, I switch it back (or all this fully automated if possible).
NOTE: the service that I need to run is special and is not one of the normal basic Microsoft service, it’s an in-house written service.
My question are :
- What software(s) do I need to do this ?
- Is there anything that I should be aware of ?
- Is there some provider (on both east and west) cost which can provide me help for the hardware part of this project ?
This is clearly the next logical step in hosting. Consider what RAID1 did for hard drive availability. Worried about your disk failing? No problem - throw in a duplicate. From a user/admin perspective the mirrored disks appear as one, highly reliable disk. Every modern OS supports this, even cheap motherboards support it, with a minimal amount of configuration.
The perfect high availability cluster should be completely transparent. Think about it... What if clustered hardware allowed you to manage a single instance of your chosen server OS with no worries about hardware/network/power failure?
The closest you can get to this finding a host that will give you a dual power supply server connected to different power feeds, dual network cards connected to different switches, and hot-swappable mirrored hard drives. This solution still doesn't give you any protection from CPU, memory, or motherboard failure.
I want a solution that is as simple to configure and manage as simple RAID1 mirroring.
I'm trying to determine what type of hosting setup (and hardware) I'd need for a web-site that expects 50,000 page views daily with peaks around 500,000.
the idea is to have it stable and serving content (almost all of which will be static).
Are there any hosting organizations or hardware configs that people would recommend?
We are trying to develop a design for a cluster of web servers at a single data center which will ensure that the cluster, as a whole, has very, very high availability.
Each of the servers is basically identical. They all serve web pages, and each can act relatively independently of the other.
Our initial thought was to put the servers behind a redundant, hardware-based, load balancing solution. The load balancers would be able to detect if any single webserver went down, and would redirect traffic to the other servers in that case.
An alternative -- less expensive -- solution that has been suggested to us is to use EtherChannel. We're concerned, however, that it might not be as robust an approach as the load balancer solution.
how we can best assure the high availability of our cluster?
Cost is an important consideration for us.
In addition, we'd prefer a solution that allowed for session maintenance. That is, once a user starts interacting with a particular server in our cluster, it would be nice if they could continue interacting with that particular physical server.
As an aside, I'll mention that we intend to implement this approach at two different data centers in different geographic regions, and use round robin DNS to further ensure high availability of the overall set of servers.
I already have a VPS with Knownhost but since i'm hosting a critical application i really need High Availability.
Could anyone recommend a company that can provide me this?
I rent a VPS with them + pay additional tax and they conf a VPS Cluster.
The application is PHP + Mysql based. Everything is stored on MySQL and the PHP is only changed when there is a upgrade. Also, PHP is compiled with Ioncube ( doesn't know if this matters ).
We have created an ASP.NET (so solution needs to be windows) web service which other website will access to draw data.
I have been testing GoGrid, whilst the concept is great the uptime is not quite there at the moment, but its only Beta so this is to be expected.
I ideally want a load balanced system, but one that can detect failure and stop directing traffic to the failed server.
Can anyone recommend a company with an option for load balancing with failure detection?
Is anyone aware of the current availability of colocation space at Equinix in Ashburn, VA? We are currently trying to obtain some space with them but getting my dedicated sales contact to respond is like pulling teeth! Are they so full (and thus full of themselves) that we will have to operate on THEIR terms (if at all)? At this point we are soliciting quotes from other datacenters of known lesser quality just so we can get this deployment live...

View 10 Replies View RelatedHas anyone been able to find any compatible RAM in 2G DIMMs for the SuperMicro X8SIL motherboard running either Corei7 or X34** LGA1156 processors? And what about reasonably priced 4G modules? I just want to make sure to purchase the right RAM before moving to a setup with this board / processor. Unless the RAM for this is crazy priced, I really don't want to go the Core2 Quad route when for about the same I can go with the newer LGA1156 stuff. But I have seen where people are having issues with RAM compatability and availability.
View 5 Replies View Relatedany recommendations for a website availability monitoring service? That is, I'd like a service that checks my site regularly, say every 5 minutes, and then calls my cellphone /txts-me if it ever goes down.
Googling around turns up a sizable number of places that do this. But, I'd like to make I'm going with somebody who's reasonably good.
I'd like to know your opinions about various VPS management systems.
What is the best VPS management system?
1. Virtuozzo
2. VDSmanager
3. HyperVM
4. SolusVM

We are currently building out our new server room and are currently unsure which UPS system to purchase.
Does any one have any experience with either the APC Symmetra LX or Liebert Nfinity systems? We require ~8kva. Both units appear to be very similar in specs and both allow expandability.
We have an older CardKey system in place here and are looking to do some updates. Anyone know of distributors of Pegasus software to manage the systems? Dealing with Johnson directly has been a huge pain and they are never around when you need them. I am in the Dallas area just looking for contacts on managing the systems.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi know maybe it is wrong for this topic to be here, but i am going to focus on my question in technically .
my question is " how backorder systems work? " .
i dont want description of them, i know they check the domain over and over and register it as soon as be available.
what i mean is what system they do to check the availability of domain better ? public whois database's are caching and not return the realtime result.
so what they do ? do they contact directly to internic whois servers ? or they use "whois" linux command?
anybody know what they do to get realtime domain check?
I got a spam email from this provider. I never sign up with their mailing list and didn't know this provider at all.
Anyone else got this?
I sharing File system using NFS between 2 mailservers running postfix on CentOS 5.2.The mail servers shares the base mail directory of virtual users e.g. /home/vmail.
It appears to run fine since last couple of months, just requires feedback if anybody already tried sharing mail directories between 2 or more mail servers.
Or is there any alternate solution for sharing data between servers?
I tried installing CentOS 64bit using windows image and vnc that comes with HyperVM and it says (your cpu does not support long mode. use a 32 bit distribution), and if I try to install Windows Server 2008 I get blue screen with a stop and error.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had enough of email problems that constantly happen on a server. For about three weeks now I have been dealing with email issues that I am going out of my mind. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a email scheme that will work. Here is what I would like to do. Disable Exim COMPLETELY. Either setup a server for email only or find a email solution. Email will be pointed ONLY by way of DNS.Once I get email fixed on this box it works for a day and next thing you know it's all messed up again. Somehow etc/localdomains and etc/remotedomains either vanish or get over written plus a bunch of other things including permissions. All I know is this is getting ridiculous.I don't want any sort of email system on this box. I want all my email to go though DNS only to another server. We already have on service that we use for Exchange, so all the MX Records point to that server, but email still has to interact with this server first, which I don't want it to.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fair ammount of load on the server, and I want to cache as much as possible to reduce disk IO. The harddrive is a major bottleneck for performance. The server serve a lot of files larger than 10MB, so I want to cache as much of the files below 10mb as possible.
First off I want to cache around 200k thumbnail files, where around 1000 new gets added every day.
Secondly it would be preferred to cache dynamic files in a way that the file timestamp is checked at a regular interval, and then read again if timestamp has changed.
Is there any free solutions on windows with apache for this?
Does CentOS support following File Systems?XFS, IBM JFS, NTFS

View 5 Replies View Relatedto ask about this offer (millenniumdata dot com/BUSINESS/Business-Default.asp?include=Business-Dedicated-Servers.asp) I found. They have live chat support so i talked with someone and what he did say me is: servers come with Fedora and whole LAMP environment installed, you can SSH to the server, and install VNC, you have full ADMIN rights to install anything you wish, servers are not managed (he said that they are Managed in the sense that they are monitoring PING POWER and PIPE), they can Re-image to default for free, no setup fee, month to month payment.
I didn't use any dedicated server, I only used shared hosting. What I planed is to move my OpenX (former names OpenAds and phpAdsNew) installation to this server for now to see who is that working. I think that server is capable to run it, since it is currently run on shared hosting.
Thought this was pretty interesting...

Do guys think this will be a popular item? Will it canibalize small (maybe even larger) colocation/data center sales?
I've been running a niche hosting business (one man show) for about 6 months now and so far I've learnt the basics of the hosting business. In fact I'm quite successful too, with good profits right from the first month. I know a bit of server admin and manage my own servers.
However, now I plan to start general shared hosting business and have decided to own my hardware and colocate it at a DC. (I'm not located in the US; the DC owner is my friend and would receive the hardware and set it up for me.)
The box would cater to general shared webhosting needs with cPanel (I don't like it but the market does )
Here's what I'm planning to go for...please put in your valuable inputs.
$300 for 1x SUPERMICRO MBD-X7DCL-I ATX Mainboard
$380 for 2x Kingston 4GB(2x2GB) KVR667D2D4F5K2/4G RAM
$475 for 2x Intel Xeon E5405 Harpertown Quad Core 2Ghz.
$240 for 2x WD Caviar RE2 WD5001ABYS 500GB SATA2 HDD
$250 for 1x Supermicro CSE-811T-420B 1U Chassis
100Mbps port, CentOS 5.latest 64bit, cPanel.
So, to sum up... 8x2Ghz CPU, 8GB RAM, 500GB SATA RAID system to start with.
I'm open to all suggestions and would appreciate valuable advice etc. from experienced people. I'd like to ensure full hardware/software compatibility and maximum stability.
How would I go about building an ostemplate?
I want to build one running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and ISPConfig on openvz
Could I pretty much start with the Ubuntu 8.04 minimal install and then run the ispconfig installation [url]
and then make an ostemplate out of that?
The part that concerns me is will the hostname autopopulate based on what is setup during the build of the vm?
What about the SSL info it asks me for during the install, should I just enter something generic for that or?
Has anyone else done this?
