Supermicro X8SIL RAM Compatability / Availability

Nov 3, 2009

Has anyone been able to find any compatible RAM in 2G DIMMs for the SuperMicro X8SIL motherboard running either Corei7 or X34** LGA1156 processors? And what about reasonably priced 4G modules? I just want to make sure to purchase the right RAM before moving to a setup with this board / processor. Unless the RAM for this is crazy priced, I really don't want to go the Core2 Quad route when for about the same I can go with the newer LGA1156 stuff. But I have seen where people are having issues with RAM compatability and availability.

Supermicro X8SIL-F Compatible RAM

Oct 8, 2009

We are testing this motherboard out for future use and are having trouble getting RAM that doesn't cause it to throw a RAM error. It does a no RAM beep, has no video, etc.

Supermicro has no compatible sticks listed for 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz DIMM ECC Registered, and we are currently using Crucial CT51272BB1339

Anyone using this board with 2GB DDR3-1333 ECC and 4GB DDR3-1333 ECC?

SAN - Fail Over / High Availability

Sep 24, 2009

we are currently planning to implement SAN to our enviroment - VPS hosting.

Al VPS should be placed on the SAN - iSCSI connected to be able live motion etc.

Currently we are fighting with idea of Failover/High avalability.
There has been rumors that dual controller SAN from HP/DELL are much more problematic than single controller versions.

We are also thinking about running some opensource like OpenFiler/FreeNAS/OpenSolaris or NexentaStore on supermicro boxes with SATA or single RAID controller.

But in that case - how make the iSCSI target highly available? Mirroring of the data/space is pretty easy with DRBD or ZFS but when one SAN box goes down, there should be no interruption in iSCSI targe service - no IP change etc..

Equinix Ashburn Availability

Jan 11, 2007

Is anyone aware of the current availability of colocation space at Equinix in Ashburn, VA? We are currently trying to obtain some space with them but getting my dedicated sales contact to respond is like pulling teeth! Are they so full (and thus full of themselves) that we will have to operate on THEIR terms (if at all)? At this point we are soliciting quotes from other datacenters of known lesser quality just so we can get this deployment live...

High Availability Project

Mar 21, 2008

I am having a new mission to achieve and I really need some pro-Windows system to help me with their advices.

I have a server which requires high availability of data and service. Basically the server run a server/client service and all clients makes their operation over this server. The server is a simple Windows 2003 Web Edition server.

My goal is to have one server running (let’s say Tom with IP 192.168.0.1) and one running as stand-by (let’s say Jerry with IP 192.168.0.2) ready to take over if the first server crashes (this would remind pro-Linux some kind of DRBD and Heartbeat server).

So, the the first server run without problem, all transactions are going to be written in the directory “D:/Transactions”. This directory must be saved in real-time to the second server which stands in case of failure...

The first server also run a Windows service, which has to be stopped on the stand-by server and started ONLY if the first server is not working anymore.

I would like also the two servers (Tom and Jerry) to share a virtual IP address on the one which is having the service running, let’s say this IP would be 192.168.0.3.

When the first server goes offline hung or whatever, the second server take over, start the service and does the job of the first - when the first come back online, I re-sync the data from the second to the first and then, I switch it back (or all this fully automated if possible).

NOTE: the service that I need to run is special and is not one of the normal basic Microsoft service, it’s an in-house written service.

My question are :

- What software(s) do I need to do this ?

- Is there anything that I should be aware of ?

- Is there some provider (on both east and west) cost which can provide me help for the hardware part of this project ?

High Availability Cluster

Jun 17, 2008

This is clearly the next logical step in hosting. Consider what RAID1 did for hard drive availability. Worried about your disk failing? No problem - throw in a duplicate. From a user/admin perspective the mirrored disks appear as one, highly reliable disk. Every modern OS supports this, even cheap motherboards support it, with a minimal amount of configuration.

The perfect high availability cluster should be completely transparent. Think about it... What if clustered hardware allowed you to manage a single instance of your chosen server OS with no worries about hardware/network/power failure?

The closest you can get to this finding a host that will give you a dual power supply server connected to different power feeds, dual network cards connected to different switches, and hot-swappable mirrored hard drives. This solution still doesn't give you any protection from CPU, memory, or motherboard failure.

I want a solution that is as simple to configure and manage as simple RAID1 mirroring.

High Availability Website

Jan 16, 2008

I'm trying to determine what type of hosting setup (and hardware) I'd need for a web-site that expects 50,000 page views daily with peaks around 500,000.

the idea is to have it stable and serving content (almost all of which will be static).

Are there any hosting organizations or hardware configs that people would recommend?

Best Approach For High Availability

Jan 5, 2007

We are trying to develop a design for a cluster of web servers at a single data center which will ensure that the cluster, as a whole, has very, very high availability.

Each of the servers is basically identical. They all serve web pages, and each can act relatively independently of the other.

Our initial thought was to put the servers behind a redundant, hardware-based, load balancing solution. The load balancers would be able to detect if any single webserver went down, and would redirect traffic to the other servers in that case.

An alternative -- less expensive -- solution that has been suggested to us is to use EtherChannel. We're concerned, however, that it might not be as robust an approach as the load balancer solution.

how we can best assure the high availability of our cluster?

Cost is an important consideration for us.

In addition, we'd prefer a solution that allowed for session maintenance. That is, once a user starts interacting with a particular server in our cluster, it would be nice if they could continue interacting with that particular physical server.

As an aside, I'll mention that we intend to implement this approach at two different data centers in different geographic regions, and use round robin DNS to further ensure high availability of the overall set of servers.

High Availability VPS Cluster

I already have a VPS with Knownhost but since i'm hosting a critical application i really need High Availability.

Could anyone recommend a company that can provide me this?

I rent a VPS with them + pay additional tax and they conf a VPS Cluster.

The application is PHP + Mysql based. Everything is stored on MySQL and the PHP is only changed when there is a upgrade. Also, PHP is compiled with Ioncube ( doesn't know if this matters ).

Website Availability Monitoring Service

Jan 6, 2009

any recommendations for a website availability monitoring service? That is, I'd like a service that checks my site regularly, say every 5 minutes, and then calls my cellphone /txts-me if it ever goes down.

Googling around turns up a sizable number of places that do this. But, I'd like to make I'm going with somebody who's reasonably good.

Recommend A High Availability System

Jun 28, 2008

We have created an ASP.NET (so solution needs to be windows) web service which other website will access to draw data.

I have been testing GoGrid, whilst the concept is great the uptime is not quite there at the moment, but its only Beta so this is to be expected.

I ideally want a load balanced system, but one that can detect failure and stop directing traffic to the failed server.

Can anyone recommend a company with an option for load balancing with failure detection?

HP ProLiant Vs SuperMicro

Apr 13, 2008

I have many years of experience with Intel (SR1325, SR2200, SR2300, etc) and HP ProLiant DL servers, and have come to love HP. Their ILO2 remote management/power/KVM/VirtualMedia feature is hands-down the best I've used, and for me it's been 100% rock-solid reliable (unlike the horror stories heard about Dell DRAC cards flaking out and locking up when you need them most).

Now there's something shiny catching my eye-- the Supermicro 1U Twin systems.

http://www.supermicro.com/products/nfo/1UTwin.cfm?pg=1

Given my long positive history with HP, I'm reluctant to consider another brand, but it is hard to ignore double-density servers with colo prices (rackspace costs, not just power costs) spiraling upward.

I would love to hear from folks who have used both HP and Supermicro boxes in production. Specifically, about reliablity of the Supermicro platform in general AND about the reliability of their IPMI management modules even under Murphy's Law situations. The last thing I need is not to be able to remote-console or power cycle an unresponsive server because the IPMI card is flaky.

Supermicro // Dell // HP

Jul 22, 2009

I know this topic has been brought up before and I wanted to revisit this again. We are a growing hosting company looking to expand our Dedicated server offerings. So far, we have been renting servers and reselling but now we have begun colocating our equipment and are looking for hardware vendors.

Would you recommend us to...

...build our own servers using the Supermicro platform?
...purchase pre-built servers from Dell?
...purchase pre-build servers from HP?

Pricing is of major concern along with speed to provision new orders. Although we don't have a dedicated resource for putting together servers, this is something we can look into should the volume of orders increase. Scalability and Flexibility is a MUST

Thanks for chiming in...

Dell, HP Or SuperMicro

May 30, 2009

The technical level in our org is quite low.

We would like some advice on the difference between

1. Supermicro PDSML-LN2
[url]

2. DELL PowerEdge R200
[url]

3. HP Proliant DL120

Some web hosts here in Singapore are leasing them at comparable rates.

Our research shows that the Dell and HP are comparable and the SuperMicro appears to be in a different (lower) class.

How can the servers be leased at comparable rates if they are from different classes?

Tyan Vs Supermicro

Anybody have any thoughts to share about which is the better manufacturer?

Dell Vs. Supermicro

Apr 26, 2007

configuration on Supermicro hardware and dell hardware, the pricing is pretty much the same 100+/- so thats not an issue.

But I am having a hard time to decide if I should go with supermicro or dell.

But here are the points which I have in mind.

- As far as dell goes, there is a central place for support, for example, if I have any issues, I know who to call exactly and get the issue solved, no resellers involved. If I go with supermicro and buy the hardware from a 3rd party, I dont know who to go to for support say a Motherboard fails or if I have any other questions, should I ask Supermicro themselves or the reseller?

- Has a DRAC card which I've heard is much more powerful than IPMI and I've heard Supermicro has no hardware for remote management as powerful as DRAC, I dont know how true that is.

- If I need any parts I know where I have to go to order them and what exactly to order since they have specific parts for specific server models, I dont know about supermicro.

I know, most of my points are benefiting Dell. But I've heard from the research that Supermicro hardware use less power and have less hard drive failures than Dell Servers, I dont know how true that is.

SuperMicro Network Drops

Sep 1, 2008

I have 4 SuperMicro servers, all of them have a problem with network dropping out 3-5 times a day, moreso during high use periods, and moreso on the servers with higher usage.

The graphs of network speed I have show the speed dropping to 0. All of the servers have this problem. 1 of the servers is a 6015 with 2x Xeon CPU, 16GB ram, RAID10 4x500GB. (don't have the exact model handy). The other 3 are 6015B-T+ with 1x Xeon CPU, 4GB ram, 2x sata drives.

These servers host game servers. The bandwidth usage on these boxes ranges from 1-5 Mb/s. CPU usage is anywhere from 10-30% during the dropouts.

Supermicro 1U PCI Riser Card

Apr 22, 2008

Currently I am building a new server based on this chassis:

I just want to make sure that that RAID card will work with that motherboard, and also I want to verify that the Supermicro CSE-RR1U-X riser card is the correct model for this motherboard and RAID card.

I've got a couple of basic servers built in the supermicro mini 1U (CSE-512L-260B) chassis, but I've never had to deal with riser cards before, so I wanted to make sure everything is compatible and is going to fit correctly before I purchase them.

Supermicro Power Supplies

Jan 17, 2008

Supermicro power supplies today and found something odd.

There are several 2U chassis that are listed as having 700W redundant power supplies. I thought this meant that there are 2 power supply modules, each rated to 700W.

However, if you look at the power supply matrix here:

[url]

Under 2U, the options for redundant power supplies are 500+500W or 400+400W or 350+350W. Does this mean that each individual power supply is only rated to half of the total power. For example, 700W redundant power supply = 2x350W individual power supplies?

Supermicro 16GB Of 32GB Of RAM

My primary goal is to have IPMI and 16GB of 32GB of RAM in a system. I'm wanting lower-cost systems. I don't need a ton of CPU or anything special on disk (2 SATA is all I really need).

My previous generation of systems was PDSMI+ with 8GB RAM and they have been working great... but time to see if I can put together some budget 16GB of 32GB servers.

Anyone have some combos of motherboard + RAM to recommend?

Setting Up Supermicro IPMI.

Feb 17, 2007

I am having alot of difficulty trying to setup supermicro IPMI.

I am using motherboard PDSMI+.

Ok, so this is what I did:

1. I flash the IPMI card with the cd-rom that is included. I set the correct IP and MAC address.

2. I then install OpenIPMI-tools

I was able to successfully issue the command locally:
ipmitool sensor

but, when I try to connect remotely I always get a connection failed. I tried everything I know, which is nothing and got no progress.

I set the ipaddres and gateway by using this commands:
ipmitool -I open lan set 1 ipaddr [IPADDR]
ipmitool -I open lan set 1 defgw ipaddr [GW IPADDR]
ipmitool -I open lan set 1 netmask [NETMASK]
ipmitool -I open lan set 1 access on
