Firewall For 5 Server Colo?
Oct 26, 2009
I'm looking to colo 5 servers, 3 app servers, 1 db, 1 backup/sparedb. I am looking for something to provide a bit of protection in, and it seems like the ASA5505 is a good firewall, but I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations?
I probably won't need ridiculous features, I wish it had gigE ports (I need to get a separate gigE switch for now, just for internal transfers+backups).
Is there anything else that might be a little cheaper, or do I need to upgrade to the 5510? Myself and one other person are the only people who would be VPNing to the internal server cluster, so we don't need massive connection rights.
I do not think I will be pushing 100mbits of data transfer, so I'm not worried about the throughput of the server.

Anyone know what firewall do I need for my colo? I want to protect external IP. Here is my setup
3 servers, all have two nic cards, one of the cards will be the external IP and the other one will be LAN IP. So my question is what hardware firewall do I need to protect the External IP?
I was thinking of a cisco pix 515e. Which only route external IP to the LAN IP. I need something where I don't have to route, It just protect the external IP.

I've been using dedicated hosting in places like the planet and rackspace for a long time now, but we're about to purchase a rack in a local data facility. This is my first time setting up a rack environment, so I have a bunch of questions.
They'll be giving me an ethernet drop into the cabinet. I have to take it from there. I'm thinking I needed a router/firewall. Am I right? Can those be a single device? Should they be? Which models would you recommend? (We're still a small operation, we don't usually push more than 1Mbps bandwidth).

I am in the process of gathering the peices to move from a dedicated box to my own hardware in a local colo and am undecided how best to choose the edge device.
The colo has a 30Mb pipe with about 10Mb of it being constantly used during biz hours. Another 10Mb is being allocated in the next couple of months. I want to be able to burst to the full 30Mb when needed.
I am getting 12 IP's allocated but will increase to 24 soon if all goes well (fingers crossed!).
I will have for starters just a single Proliant running dnp on 2008 with IIS, FTP, Mail, ns1 and a 2003 VM running my secondary ns.
What I am unsure of is the edge device and looking for others that have used either a 2800 series router or a ASA5500 series firewall in a similiar fashion. I know what the raw throughput of each device is, but raw benchmarks are not realworld numbers by any means.
I am looking at the 2801 with IOS Firewall turned on and hopefully even some inspects for FTP and HTTP traffic. The other option and one that I am less familiar with is to use the ASA5505 instead which will do my basic routing but supposedly provide more thourough inspects and advanced rules.
Does anyone have experiance with either of these in a hosting environment and have input on the realistic throughput one can expect from either device?
There is a signifigant cost difference with the ASA5505 being much cheaper but I am more familiar with IOS. Would anyone recommend a 1841 router instead?

Please give me the difference. Colo in carrier hotel, we can choose our preferred network provider, but should we do that if we cannot have our own tech in datacenter? How about the supporting service from carrier hotel? Just general question, cause I dont address exactly which facility.
And the second would be more expensive? Saying the same number of rack, amount of bandwidth... Who is providing IP addresses then?

I'm currently on a shared hosting plan and my site has gotten to the point where the server cant handle it anymore, so I have to move up. I was debating a managed dedicated server and while looking at the prices for an entry level box of $200+/mo. I began to wonder whether it might be better to buy a server and colo in some shared rackspace.
Has anyone gone this route? Is it worth it, do you save more, or does it cost even more?
I'm looking at some decent deals on ebay for HP DL380's 2Ghz+ 1GB Ram which I think should be pretty solid for a web server. If the site continues to expand I'd eventually pick up another box and use that for a dedicated DB server.
Colo prices arent as low as I thought, i see ad's saying starting from $50 bucks, but then once you start pricing it out, it quickly goes up to $150-200$ for a decent package. WHich makes it comprable to dedicated hosting minus your ownership of the physical server.
I guess my main question is, is it advantageous to own the box or is renting it better? Lease or buy? That is the question.

Do you recommend a software firewall when behind a hardware firewall?
All of our servers are behind Cisco ASA 5505 firewalls which we rent from Liquidweb. All are being managed correctly and setup to there optimal levels. With hardware firewalls firmly in place, do you still recommend a software firewall such as APF or IPTables (we're talking linux); in our opinion we see it as an extra administration overhead. If this is however untrue, we will change out thinking.

I was thinking about building a TF2 server 24 slot and colocating it at colopronto. I have a P4 HT 3.2 2 gigs of ram 2x160 SATA drives. I won't be hosting any other games on the server, just one instance of TF2. I have a couple of questions.
Which is better, Windows or Linux to use? Are my hardware specs good enough? how much bandwidth do you think I'll use a month on a 24 slot server as opposed to a 32 slot? Thanks for any input.

How do you modify a server's firewall? We have a dedicated server with WHM installed and it appears we can't get into mail.domain.com because of a firewall setting (our host disabled the firewall and it worked fine, then of course put it back up).

I'm looking for a Colo provider for a 2u server in the Chicago area. I'll be running a game server that will host at least two 24 player servers, so I'm thinking I need a 10Mb unmetered connection.
Ideally, I'd like to get it at $100/mo, but I understand that may be unlikely.

i'm in Houston, Texas. i'll like to know if anyone can give me tips on what to look for in colo. what question should i ask or be aware of.
my budget is $100 per month. i don't use much bandwidth and it doesn't have to be premium bandwidth with basic service.

From reading these boards for a couple years now, I always had the impression that colo was cheapest in Texas or thereabouts, and was priciest in places like NYC. (Of course, I'm referring to relatively comparable service.)
Now I finally have a need for a single server colo (1U). The most-mentioned places in Texas on these boards are cologuys, colo4dallas, etc. Most of them have reasonable rates listed right on their website, around $100-170 for the bandwidth that I need, about 1.5Mbps.
But I've also been requesting quotes from various providers in NYC, who are also popular on these boards. And while there are some in the $200-250 range, which is what I was expecting, there are some that are mentioned highly on these boards (toqen, thenynoc, razorblue, etc.) that are quoting $60-100/month for the same amount of bandwidth.
I.e., not only comparable but in fact *lower* than the Texas colos.
What am I missing here? It's very possible that I'm comparing apples to oranges, cuz I really don't know any of these businesses. Just forming an opinion based on what gets recommended here on a consistent basis.

Does anyone know if there are providers left in Dallas that provide single server colocation solutions? If so, who are they and what can I expect in terms of pricing?
I am used to reselling shared and dedicated servers, but I've leased them for long, I could have paid for them by now. Some of my clients have their own systems too. They tend to request Dallas.

I have been reviewing online price quotes for colo hosting and dedicated server hosting. To me, common sense would be that it would be less expensive to get a cheapo used server off of ebay and have it colocated. But what I am seeing is many instances where it would would actually be less expensive per month to rent a dedicated server (which might even be a better server) - including in some cases from the very same companies that offer the colo services. Is what I am seeing typical - and, if so, why is this the case? Is there an assumption that a colo customer will use more bandwidth than a typical dedicated server customer? Is the cost of servicing a colo customer significantly greater than that of a dedicated server customer?

We have a Dell 1950 server with WinServer 2003 which is at the moment unprotected and exposing our entire network to the internet. At the moment we don't have a hardware firewall and want to install a software firewall in the meantime for ACL. We could use the default firewall that comes with the server but apparently that's easy to exploit. I tried one called Kerio, however this particular firewall can't be configured from RDP because it needs to be active in order to input the IPs for it to allow. Any suggestions on a software based firewall solution that's easy to install and manage remotely?

I run my own Game Server Provider, and I am looking to expand to new a new centralized area.
I am thinking about Texas colocation. Does anyone know any good colo facilities in Texas, with affordable rates.
Server Size is a Full Size Tower
Bandwidth: 1mbps sustained, Peak 5 mbps (during peak hours: 8pm-10pm). I would imagine this server would use around 700 GB of traffic per month.

I've found a dedicated server at a great price and plan to stick with it, my first ( already have 2 vps accounts ). I don't have the money for a hardware firewall. However, I do have a chance to renew a Kerio WinRoute Firewall license from way back.
Does anyone think this would be better than the default windows 2003 firewall?

we had 2 Xen serverers in colohouse, each with 30 IPs yet.
Now we are going to purchase third server and started to think about renting small rack and putting own firewall infront of the servers.
Actual bandwidth is 5Mbits for both servers together.
We are thinking about to have something like this:
Colohouse-->Firewall<-->switch<--->Xen server(s)
With scenario we would like to add:
1) traffic monitoring per IP
2) traffic shapping per IP
3) firewalling whole segment of our public IPs
FW will get single IP and range of public IPs routed to that IP
4) be able to put one public IP for VPS on to any Xen server
What firewall and switch you will recommend for this scenario?
