i got my server. I'm still shopping for hard disks but the server is pretty much there.
i'm in Houston, Texas. i'll like to know if anyone can give me tips on what to look for in colo. what question should i ask or be aware of.
my budget is $100 per month. i don't use much bandwidth and it doesn't have to be premium bandwidth with basic service.
Which are the best colo provider in Texas. I checked cologuys, colo4dallas and zogmo.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFrom reading these boards for a couple years now, I always had the impression that colo was cheapest in Texas or thereabouts, and was priciest in places like NYC. (Of course, I'm referring to relatively comparable service.)
Now I finally have a need for a single server colo (1U). The most-mentioned places in Texas on these boards are cologuys, colo4dallas, etc. Most of them have reasonable rates listed right on their website, around $100-170 for the bandwidth that I need, about 1.5Mbps.
But I've also been requesting quotes from various providers in NYC, who are also popular on these boards. And while there are some in the $200-250 range, which is what I was expecting, there are some that are mentioned highly on these boards (toqen, thenynoc, razorblue, etc.) that are quoting $60-100/month for the same amount of bandwidth.
I.e., not only comparable but in fact *lower* than the Texas colos.
What am I missing here? It's very possible that I'm comparing apples to oranges, cuz I really don't know any of these businesses. Just forming an opinion based on what gets recommended here on a consistent basis.
Does anyone know if there are providers left in Dallas that provide single server colocation solutions? If so, who are they and what can I expect in terms of pricing?
I am used to reselling shared and dedicated servers, but I've leased them for long, I could have paid for them by now. Some of my clients have their own systems too. They tend to request Dallas.
anyone know of any colos in Beaumont? The company we were dealing with just went AWOL and we need another vendor pronto.

I have a Linux(RHEL5) dedicated server.Tomcat version 5.x is running integrated with Apache and now i want to install tomcat 6.x integrate with apache without effecting older tomcat version. it will run as it is.
How can i do this and if yes then how can i set tomcat home path for both versions.

is there any sort of ssl certificate that will 'secure' any domain, hosted on a single server?
For example, I have the following domains and subdomains:
google.com
test.google.com
mywebsite.com
hello.example.com
All will be hosted on the same server (same IP) and I want all to be secured, through a SIGNED certificate, not a self signed. I assumed that wildcard ssl would be fine for this, but I just took a look and it's only for subdomains: example.example.com hello.example.com.
Is there any way of having every subdomain and domain secured, using ssl, through one certificate? I don't want to have to buy individual certificates for every domain, that'd be... expensive.
Based on todays equipement I know a person can spend Thousands on a good server, I'm looking to build my own and just want some advice on which way to go.
I'm thinking of just building the server pc in one case and the hard drive setup will be in a seperate case with the following:

Can anyone give advice on what would be a good setup if you were running 1 single server for local businesses. I don't want to hear just pay for a provider as I've heard that one before now I'm looking to know what hardware setup you would run I like to play and learn. These websites would not get many hits, maybe a few hundread to a few thousand a month per site. My goal is to minimize the number of accounts I will have to open up with a web service provider.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a user who says he cannot get to any site on my server from either home or work. He has been a user for many years, and has never had any problems. He has also checked with his IT at work and they confirmed the site is not available. He is computer savvy, so I trust he is telling the truth.
His work and home are only 10 miles apart.
Do you guys have any ideas what could be happening? Is there a DNS entry wrong somewhere? He can't access the site even when putting in the IP address.
There is one other user reporting something similar but other than that no other complaints. The site works fine for everyone else.

I have diesel generator controller card (IB Lite made by Comap) and the built-in webserver supports only a single user/session connected.
I want to set apache in front and serve multiple connection while apache is keeping a single session with the IB Lite card in background no matter how sessions it have.
I tried ProxyPass but it doesn't seems to be a solution.
Is this possible?

I am developing an application on a load balanced network.
It is configured as follows:
Webserver1, Webserver 2 (Fedora 5 - Linux, Apache, Zend Opt, PHP)
and a DataBase Server (MySQL)
When the webserver attempt to use the Database server the connections and page output are REALLY slow!
The database server is within the webservers local intranet - so I thought it would be a lot faster.

For those of you in Texas, do you have to pay sales tax on bandwidth if you buy it directly from a bandwidth provider (e.g. Cogent, AboveNet, Global Crossing, etc.)?
From my understanding, the sales tax rate is 8.25% on bandwidth bought directly from a bandwidth provider in all the big cities in Texas?
Used ThePlanet for ages and well not to impressed with them in the past 6 months. Not reading tickets fully is a big issue or not following instructions. Response times to tickets absolutely unacceptable with some being 3-4 hours others ranging in the days and most requiring calls to get responses. It really seems like they're more focused on their dedicated server market.
So any suggestions on quality providers for people in need of a few cabs and 45mbit or so and want actual decent response times and knowledgeable staff who read tickets fully?
Some applications are of the ping sensitive nature while others are just your normal web, mail, misc services. So things like cisco guards available and friendly with regards to fixing bad routes would be nice.
I've heard people suggest Colo4Dallas but are there any other suggestions?
I am currently with The Planet with the following configuration - Dual Xeon 2.4 - SCSI, 1 GB RAM, 73 GB 10K RPM SCSI/SAS HDD. But it lag spikes when I run a Counter Strike server on it, I don't know if it's there network or something wrong with the hardware.
I had a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz from Calhost and it never lagged, and keep in mind this is a Dual Xeon. I have been trying to figure out the problem, but no luck yet. My question is - what other companies in Texas sell dedicated servers?
Does anyone know what could be causing the lag spikes? Or had a similar incident with The Planet. I don't know if it's there network.

We are in need of mainly incoming bandwidth only, and would like to do some trading if possible. A hosting provider would be an ideal match as they should have excess incoming bandwidth to spare.

Can anyone comment on how their experience has been with the Qwest network in the Texas region? It seems by looking at their network map that they have many directly links to other cities coming out of Houston which is a surprise to me as everything seems to come from Dallas on other networks.

IRC has allowed and it needs to be a datacenter in Texas. The datacenter can't be ThePlanet. DDoS protection is a huge plus.
Please give me the difference. Colo in carrier hotel, we can choose our preferred network provider, but should we do that if we cannot have our own tech in datacenter? How about the supporting service from carrier hotel? Just general question, cause I dont address exactly which facility.
And the second would be more expensive? Saying the same number of rack, amount of bandwidth... Who is providing IP addresses then?
