Besides contacting them directly and getting an overinflated price on 1GB of BW and 1u space, is there anyone i can contact who can set me up with better pricing in the Ashburn location? I'm in Baltimore. Washington and Ashburn is about 30 or 40min from away. Something to take into consideration.

We are seeing good reviews about cologuys' dedicated servers but we are concerned that they host piracy sites such as << snipped >> (super illegal site) and << snipped >> (service to download rapidshare links without waiting). I'm assuming this is against their TOS but what we're more concerned with is should Cologuys ever get busted for hosting warez would our servers be affected in any way?

Not sure if this is the right place for it but I am looking for a colo provider for a single server. My group is thinking about building a dual xeon clovertown server that we will be using to hosting multiple gaming servers. We currently have a server at The Planet but would like to get away from that since their high performance servers cost $300+ /month.
With that being said I will need somewhere to get the box coloed and having trouble finding providers that don't charge an arm and a leg for hosting.
I have admins in Las Vegas NV, Huston TX, and Memphis TN so anyone of those places I can get good latency too would be ideal.
The best deal so far I have found was colo4dallas that would cost us $100/month for colo and give us 200gig of bw but I would really like the server to be located in one of the cities I listed above incase something broke and we needed to send someone in.

I'm kinda confused about warez linking allowed VPS hosters.. Most of them they say "Warez Linking is allowed" "AS LONG AS IT'S LEGAL" Is there a legal warez? I though that warez is illegal in the first place!
I'm planing to buy a VPS Plan from fsckvps.com, but I'm afraid they might terminate my account, so want to make sure if I will work fine with them, I've contacted them as pre-sale question, they said that warez linking is allowed as long as nothing is hosted on their server.
Okay, Now what's legal warez? My site content actually is New worldwide music albums, info, Movies, Cracked/nulled softwares..
Download links are included, but hosted on sharing site such as 4shared.com etc..
Will this be fine? Or I might experience account termination?
I'm just inches away from purchasing their 512MB RAM Plan, this is my final question.

For the last few weeks I have been looking around at various colo and dedi offers here and there because I was thinking of saving some money by colocating a server and I noticed that everyone who offers both colo and dedi have things fixed so that the colo is much more expensive than renting a dedi from the same people in the exact same datacenters!
You would think that since a brand new server costs between $500 and $2500 to build or buy that amortizing of the cost of the hardware would make the dedis more expensive but in fact the opposite is true 90% of the time and only rarely does a host offer a colo plan that even matches their dedi plans. There are exceptions, like FDC for example but most of the time when you sit down and look at the price per mbps and the price per amp the colocation for a standard 8GB/quadcore/500GB server doing 2 TB of bandwidth is more just in monthly rental than if you rented a dedi(that the company owns).
So, in other words if I am renting a dedi with 8GB RAM, Quadcore CPU, 500GB hard drive with 5000 GB bandwidth quota on a 100mbps uplink for $125 to $150 a month and I wanted to save money by swapping it out with my own dedi of the same specs I would right away lose the cost of the dedi and then each month lose even more just in the colo fees along.
So what exactly is going on here? Are hosts overselling their dedis and making losses on a few but profits on most? And then on top of that artificially bloating their colo prices to encourage people to rent dedis instead? Or...do they just bloat colo prices out of fear and expectation that anyone who colos will be blasting their servers to the max and sucking up the mostest amps while using all the bandwidth that they buy?

I noticed in the apache error logs that Yahoo and Google (mostly Yahoo) have been crawling one of my clients' sites for warez, cracks and serials, but these files don't exist (and hence they're ending up with 404 errors in the error logs).
The IPs that are doing this are legit (as far as I can tell)... 74.6.20.32, 74.6.74.50, 66.249.65.178
It's systematically hitting the server once every second or two, looking for files such as "free.serial.no.of.flash.professional.8.jsp", "trainer.SimCity.4.million.jsp", "Paragon.Partition.Manager.v.7.crack.jsp"
and this has been happening for at least a day now.
Now here's the thing. The site has gone through a redesign about 4 months ago, and the previous site was running an old version of PHP Nuke that was filled with spam (from tracebacks), and a photo gallery manager which was probably not installed securely. The new site utilizes Joomla, and all the previous elements are gone (in fact the site was migrated to my servers after the redesign, so my servers never hosted their old PHP Nuke or photo gallery).
These mysterious crawls from Yahoo and Google all seem to hit the photo gallery URLs, such as http://www.domain.com/albums/album01...v3.1.patch.jsp
The other weird part is, all the links end with .jsp. The site's previous server did not have JSP support, and neither does mine.
Also before we moved the site over to my server, I archived their entire website on their old server, and none of these files exist there.
Doing a search on Google on their site (site:www.domain.com) doesn't show any of these files. Searching Google for links that point to the site also don't show anything out of the ordinary.
This has me baffled... Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

http://1and1.com
I've had a couple dedicated servers with 1and1 for a while now(about 6mos). I have to say that my overall experience was pretty good. At the time the prices where pretty good, and are very comparable to most hosts. I received the speeds promised, the server was setup very quickly.
The only negative I had with the server was the kernel. I attempted to install vmware on they system however they did not have the headers needed by GCC to compile vmware. It was an annoyance, but I just opted to update the kernel since there where a few releases since their custom built kernel was made. Once I was running the new kernel the vmware process went smoothly, and everything worked perfectly.
As for 1and1's support team, I have to say their standard support I would not rate a 10/10, however their dedicated server support team, and one particular rep I've come to know in their sales / abuse department (more on the abuse dpt. later) are very knowledgeable. And always addressed any issues or questions promptly. Which honestly no issues besides vmware stand out in my mind, which was just a minor inconvenience, which you would find on most hosts. Since its an un-managed root server your responsible for keeping the system up to date, and run the latest kernels anyway right?
Ok, so I mentioned I came to know a rep out of the abuse department of sales. Now this isn't particularly related to my dedicated servers but I did have one of their hosting packages. Well I never kept tabs on the site and the scripts had a couple vulnerabilities, php5 wasn't enforced.
Anyway to make a long story short, the site was hacked and fake bank sites and other scripts where loaded onto the server. Which is where The abuse department came into play. Now I know (getting off topic, but it may be the same with a dedicated server) hosting companies don't want to run sites like these, and I thought that the way these companies usualy handle these types of situations are to send a take-down notice to their client, as its possible they may not even know its there. But 1and1 opted to completely disable all access to the server, http, ftp, ssh, everything. So at first I didn't know what happend. I call up tech support that night(prob around midnight -- 24/7 tech support is always great), they let me know the account was dissabled do to an abused related complaint. They told me I would have to wait until morning when their sales department opens(as abuse is located in sales).
So I call up the number they gave me the next morning. And meet Bob (I'm calling him bob because his name escapes me at the moment). He was very pleasant and understanding that I needed my site up as soon as possible. He looked at my account he saw I had been with them for about a year and a half, and said he didn't think I had posted any of the content anyway(he disabled it himself imagine that haha). He emailed me links to all the files in question, informed me that php5 was not forced and recomed I fix it. Since that was the only reason we had this isue in the first place. He was also able to tell me what files the hacker used to exploit and gain access to the server, as well as searched the the user directory for any backdoor scripts. Which he did find some and sent me the locations in the email.
So, finally we got of the phone he re-enabled the server. I went through the email went through everything, I just opted to delete everything as i felt the whole system was compromised anyway, and re-upload the site. I forced php5 for all php scripts and never heard anything about it again... and the site still runs today!
Their normal tech support isn't all the great, at least not when it comes to apache. I inquired about mod_rewrite not working and the first rep i spoke to didn't know what i was talking about, I explained in more detail, she put me on hold for about 10-20mins and researched it. Said she found details about my issue and shot me an email. I checked the email, it contained how to moddify headers using MS ASP which has nothing to even do with my "LINUX" shared hosting plan.
I called in a second time frustrated, remember I usually talk to guys from their dedicated server support. When I spoke with the second rep. The first thing I asked Him was if he was familiar with "Apache Mod_Rewrite" (exact words) are you familiar with this, and if not can you please give me to someone that is. He assured me he knew what I was talking about, I explained the situation, and what the other rep sent me was completely off topic. He apologized and assured me he knows exactly what I'm talking about.
He sent me an email with another link to their FAQ yet again. However this time is was on creating 403 redirects in apache. Well I do admit at least they got closer this time right? I laughed and walked out of the room. Took a shower and relaxed. Finally, I decided I'd take one last look at .htaccess configs before trying another call. I played around with different setting and... eureka! I found the solution; for some reason mod rewrite on 1and1's shared hosting servers doesn't support sub-directories; that is you need to access the files in your root directory to successfully process a rewrite.
So whats the moral of the story? Call Dedicated Server Support! lol
So anyway since this is a dedicated server review. So for my Dedicated server experience I would rate it a "9 out of 10".
For my overall experience with 1and1, I would rate it an "8 out of 10". Not the best I ever had, but I would do business with them. There are other minor issues I've had with their shared hosting, but I don't feel like getting into them.
Anyway hope that helps sombody, I kno it was a long post... so for the people that read it all congrats, because I lost concentration over about 80% of that post lol
Little humor there.. anyway thanks for read'n the post... just my little contribution to WHT.

I have a 1u server that I'm looking to colo. I looked around the forums but I can't seem to find exactly what I need.
I'd prefer if the hosting company was large, owned its own datacenter (as opposed to leasing), offered proactive (automated) monitoring services, remote reboot, and a superb network with little or no downtime.
I like liquidweb but it looks like they only have 500gb / month up and down or a dedicated line capped at 10mbps line. I need something in between, around 1000GB / month up and down with 100mbps port. Support doesn't really matter, nor does price.

Please give me the difference. Colo in carrier hotel, we can choose our preferred network provider, but should we do that if we cannot have our own tech in datacenter? How about the supporting service from carrier hotel? Just general question, cause I dont address exactly which facility.
And the second would be more expensive? Saying the same number of rack, amount of bandwidth... Who is providing IP addresses then?

MonkeyWrench Hosting review - Three year review
I've been hosting my personal sites with MonkeyWrench Hosting for around three years now (coming up in January I believe), and I figured I'd share my experiences with them!
I've gone through a few hosts in my time, and some of them have been pretty rough. After using paid hosts, a niche free host started up that I stayed with for around a year before they eventually closed down.
I switched to MonkeyWrench Hosting at that point as a place to host my sites and store my files, and I have to say that I've been impressed throughout the time I've been with them.
Uptime/speed:
Fantastic! The sites have been perfectly reliable and speedy whenever I've gone to access them, and I haven't had any complaints from users. I did come across MySQL going down on one of the servers (I have two accounts for different purposes that are on seperate servers) in the past, but it was resolved quickly before I even needed to get help.
Support:
I've used the support a few times, but not for anything critical since there's not been the need. However, everything that I have asked was answered promptly in a professional manner.
Pricing:
Again, no complaints here. The pricing is pretty cheap, especially for the quality of service receieved. They aren't the cheapest on the Internet by any means, but you generally get what you pay for. I'm aware of what my realistic space/bandwidth needs are anyway, and I'd rather pick a host that clearly advertises what you'll receive over an 'unlimited' host.
All in all, MWH have been a fantastic choice and I couldn't have hoped for anything better.
So, thumbs up to Jonathan, and keep up the good work!
I'll report my domains for the moderators to check them out. =)

I'm trying to find at least three web hosting companies to choose from to host a Joomla websites on a shared server. Would consider dedicated if the deal was right. I have a friend of mine who wants to create a church website, and is looking for the best deal. I use Netfirms which I have never had an issue with, but I didn't want to be bias, and would like give him other options to choose from.
Is there a good WebHosting Review site, I could check out, or maybe someone could recommend their top three. I reading threw the forums here and I noticed there are not that many complaints with Hostgator. Again, I just want to see if there was anything out there better.

I am looking for small colocation space in Equinix NY2.
(There is another topic here [url]where the original poster was looking for dedi/colo in Equinix NY4; I joined that topic with the same request. But after doing my homework, I've adjusted the requirements: firstly, I need colo only, not a dedicated server; and secondly, NY2 is almost as good for my purposes as NY4. And apparently there are more providers offering colo there.)
If you know someone who has (or might have) colo space in Equinix NY2, please, could you recommend them here?
