Fast Firefox And Bandwidth With Websites

Jun 30, 2008

I understand that in firefox you can

with this setting

about:config
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

make it so that the browser make so many requests

How does it effect bandwidth of websites and how one can prevent people from coming to your site with so many requests?

Will 512MB RAM And 200GB Bandwidth Host 5 Low-key Websites

Sep 21, 2007

I'm seriously considering the LVPS-2 plan at SWVPS: 10GB space, 200GB bandwidth, 512MB RAM (burstable to 768MB). I have four sites hosted with MediaTemple but I want to give VPS another shot since it provides full root access. MediaTemple is hosting me fine, but I keep running into roadblocks with things that involve custom compiling. I'd really like some more flexibility.

So how easy would it be to add 4 domains to one VPS plan and have them all in their own subdirectory? Also, two of these domains would have one e-mail address, so I'd need a mail server along with a FTP server. I know these two to be slight resource hogs from my previous VPS experiences, as they both caused me to go over my limit (which was, I think, 256MB).

I sent SWVPS an email but all I got was a suggestion to get a dedicated server. These days it's hard to tell a genuine recommendation from someone trying to milk another $40/mo out of you. I really don't think I need a dedicated server for these sites, as I've hosted much more than that on shared servers (granted, that's a completely different area). I also can't afford dedicated hosting. This $20 price point for LVPS-2 is convenient, because it's the same price at MT, which I'm barely skimming by on.

Site #1 is a personal blog with one email account, powered by PHP and MySQL.

Site #2 is a company website and blog, powered by RoR, but not much database load. It would, however, run Subversion and browse it with Warehouse, a RoR SVN browser. This would probably be the main offender as everything SVN would be managed and run from here.

Site #3 is a software website in RoR, all downloads would be from Site #2's SVN server. It has forums, a bug tracker, a plugin/theme browser, and a development blog, and everything else is just (R)HTML.

Site #4 is another personal site, with one email account.

Fast Webhost, Little Disk Space, With Php, Mysql, Phpmyadmin, And Alot Of Bandwidth

Apr 1, 2008

The most important requirement is that the webhost must be fast. It must have alot of bandwidth.

The disc space is not so important. 200 MB would be enough.

It must have PHP, MySQL and phpmyadmin installed.

Must be accesable through FTP.

There are offcourse more requirements. But the main thing is that i want it to be fast.

My pages will be only informative and exists of just mainly text and an image every now and then.

Do you know any fast webhosts that is good to handle websites with large amounts of visitors?

I'm looking for something around 6 dollars per month.

I dont know much about webhosting at all, so i'd appreciate any help i can get

Also i see websites where you can register a domain. But the prices vary, isn't a domain just a domain? What makes this price difference?

IE/Firefox Keeps Prompting For Un/pw

Jan 18, 2007

I'm on IIS6.

The site is open to all via anonymous setting. Everything works.

I turned off anonymous access in a subfolder. Try to view it and I get prompted for login like I should. But no matter what I enter I can't get in. I know I am entering the correct un/pw, but I just keep getting prompted again and again as if it was wrong. If I hit cancel I see either a 401.1 or 401.5 message.

Here's the rub, it used to work. But then I moved the source files to a another machine and changed the site root to the UNC. Did the whole same IUSR in both machines for it to work. Everything went smooth. But now the protected directory keeps asking for login, I can't get acces to it. I have only Integrated Windows Authentication checked.

Firefox And An Intermediate Cert

May 22, 2007

I had to reinstall a Verisign cert last week. After cleaning out a mess of old certs, keys and csr's I finally got the thing to install properly.

However, I get a "Website Certified by an Unknown Authority Error in Firefox".

Everything including the intermediate crt is installed correctly as far as I can tell and I get no error in any version of IE.

Here from the httpd.comf file:

Code:
<IfDefine SSL>
<VirtualHost IPADDRESS:443>
DocumentRoot /home/myuser/public_html
ServerName www.mysite.com
UserDir public_html

User myuser
Group mygroup
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/myuser/public_html/cgi-bin/

SSLEnable
SSLCertificateFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/www.mysite.com.crt
SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/share/ssl/private/www.mysite.com.key
SSLCACertificateFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/www.mysite.com.cabundle
SSLLogFile /usr/local/apache/domlogs/www.mysite.com-ssl_data_log
CustomLog /usr/local/apache/domlogs/www.mysite.com-ssl_log combined
SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown
</VirtualHost>
</IfDefine>

The key matches the cert, and the cabundle is directly from Verisign.

Has anyone had a similar problem with getting a Verisign or other intermediate cert to work properly? I've reissued the thing twice and so far nothing has changed. It's like the intermediate cert isn't being sent even though it is installed.

When viewing the cert in firefox the Certificate Hierarchy only shows my domain. In internet explorer is shows Verisign Class 3 Public Primary CA -> Verisign Class 3 Secure Server CA -> My domain.

Weird Firefox Camtasia Server Issue

Jan 23, 2007

When I try to play one of my own camtasia videos in Firefox they just don't work! If I open them in an other browser they play just fine.

If I open the same video on a other server, it starts!

I see the playbar, the buttons, it says it's waiting for the server but they just don't start playing! How weird is that!

IIS 5 - Cant Access Page From IE7 But Can Access From Firefox

Feb 20, 2008

I found a great little app called ID Shutdown Manager which bascially lets you do stuff like wake on LAN, Shutdown, Log Off etc.

The App also has a cgi script which you can call from a web server so you get a web interface to the program.

This is exactly my reason for getting the app as I just wanted to host a web page where I could login from the internet and wake on lan my media PC.

Ok so...

The app gives you all the iis or apache setup instructions and tells you to place the cgi script which is actually a .exe into the scripts folder and then enable basic authentication for it.

Done.

So if I navigate to <SERVER>/scripts/sdmancgi.exe its supposed to give me a user / pass prompt and then when login successful I see the app and can wake on lan etc.

ok I have got this to work

on the actual machine where server is running I can access it in IE7 by localhost etc.. and it works

However when I try to access from another PC in my lan by typing <SERVER>/scripts/sdmancgi.exe I get a nice little message saying the content cannot be displayed you may require to insall a program or something to display it.

If I try to access the page from firefox on same remote PC, it works!

I can also access page from outside my LAN, it works on my N95 browser.

Also I have had friends try it from firefox from the Internet and they say it works as well.

Forgot to mention I am running on port 8081 as I already have other servers running on 8080 and 80 (one is my router and the other server installed itself from setup.exe and I dont know what server its using)

I have also tried latest apache server as well as some other free one. Both have the same effect. Ok in firefox, not in IE.

One would think its a problem with the cgi file not compatible with IE7 however, I even tried to go to default page setup in IIS <SERVER>:8081 and I get the same message. So at this point the server hasnt even tried to access CGI or prompt for Basic Authentication.

I tried googling and not much luck. I read something about CSS and when I view source of failed web page from IE7 it mentions something about CSS so dont know if this is it?

Is There A Fast Web Host Out There

Dec 14, 2008

Is there a webhost fast enough for providing large files (2.5GB +, going up to 10GB + larger) on my website to users worldwide?

At the moment my website is hosted in the UK and it seems to deliver download speeds of around 650kbps if only one person is downloading at a time. I have tried other web hosts, and their download speeds are never advertised, but have turned out to be even less in practise (e.g. 150kbps)

As I'm hosting large files (e.g. 1GB - 2.5GB - 8.5GB or more) on my website, I need something with unlimited speed. i.e. so that the download speed is limited only by the end user's connection.

Is there anything like this out there? I realise the files are very large in size, but I'd rather keep the process electronic than mail out hundreds of DVDs all the time.

I'm planning to host about 10 websites, most of them will be developed on Dotnetnuke (latest version). The most important issue is the speed of the web sites. The pages need to be opened fast. The target audience is located in Istanbul/Turkey, therefore I think the EU-based companies will be better for my requirements.

PHP 5.2.4 Fast CGI Not Working

Sep 10, 2007

I run lighttpd as my webserver, and 5.2.1 worked perfectly. I upgraded to 5.2.4 but when I checked my version, it said "cli". I ran the exact same configure command that I did with 5.2.1, but for some reason it says "cli". I then just ran this config:

'./configure' '--enable-fastcgi' '--enable-discard-path' '--enable-force-cgi-redirect'

And got this error:

Fast Hosting Worldwide?

Dec 27, 2008

I need to provide an 8gb file download (split into 1gb parts) that will be downloaded by 80+ people worldwide, simultaneously. I'm talking for example, they will be each downloading at 1.2megabytes per second each (this is the average speed of their home connections), simultaneously.
What are the specs or things I should be looking out for in a website hosting provider?
One service I'm looking at is advertised as 0.5Mbps in bandwidth and 100Mbps in transit, for £40 a month. The service I'm looking at is sensical.net's colo business service (http://www.sensical.net/). What does this mean and is it fast enough? What is the difference between these two figures - 0.5Mbps bandwidth and 100Mbps transit?

Just a few questions to those that do use surpass or have used them. How fast are their servers for PHP like Wordpress and Invision Power Board and are are your sites stable (always fast, or are they slow at times and then fast) with them.

Server Slows Down Fast

Jun 6, 2009

The server I have running has LAMP and some other related services running. It's on a 100Mbit shared port. Whenever the server has been running for 30-90mins, the pings start to become very high (+2000ms). Problem exists with ftp, ssh, http etc, and restarting named, httpd, mysqld doesn't affect anything. The only thing that gets the pings back down and the speeds up again is to reboot the system, which takes about a minute. The MRTG graphs show that there isn't any significant traffic which cause the pings go down, in fact, the traffic goes close to 0 when the pings start sky rocketing. CPU load is < 0.1 and memory usage low as well.
